One Shadow Nine Fists

     One Shadow (Spoilers)

Saiga Furinji, Senzui

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saiga_f_7526.jpg
The leader of Yami and the One Shadow Nine Fists. Originally thought to be Saiga Furinji, the Elder's son and Miu's father, he is later revealed to be Senzui, an old friend of Saiga and his wife Shizuha who after much conflict strayed towards a dark path for the sake of peace.

     Isshinsai "Kensei" Ogata, (Flow)

Voiced by : Akio Ōtsuka (JP)

  • Affably Evil: He's pretty polite one moment, then savagely killing someone the next.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: Let's be honest, his philosophy would be far more in place maybe two or three centuries back, where killing enemies was more accepted.
  • Deceptive Disciple: To the Ryouzanpaku masters. The Elder recognized his sinister intentions right away, but Kensei and Akisame trained him for a while before his true nature because apparent.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He has no problem killing anyone who fights him, no matter their age... As long as they made the choice and refuses to kill anyone who didn't or couldn't make it. Having unwittingly broken this creed is the one thing he regrets.
  • Evil Mentor: Seems to be almost a hobby to him as he does it more than the other Yami members. He even has his eye on Kenichi.
  • Hero's Evil Predecessor: To Kenichi as the Ryouzanpaku disciple.
  • In the Hood: Wears a hood.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite having conducted dangerous "experiments" on his disciples, despite having killed Tanaka's wife, master, and Tanaka himself, despite having played a major role in nearly kicking off a world war... at the end of the manga, he has not received a single defeat and is still alive and well.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His appearance during the Titan Arc reveals that he Killed Tanaka's wife shortly after killing his master, and that she was pregnant with Tanaka's child. At the end of the Arc Tanaka is killed, in front of Kenichi and marking the first onscreen murder of an unambiguous good guy by a member of Yami.
  • Mad Scientist: Sort of. He is quite open to "experimenting" on his disciples and even his peers, especially with the Dou-Sei combination technique, which destroys the mind and body of the user.
  • My Greatest Failure: Killing Tanaka's unborn child: while he has no qualm about killing his opponents, no matter age or gender, that's only as long as they're brave enough to choose to risk their lives against him, something a child still in the womb of the woman fighting him could have not done.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Strangely averted. Despite being a killer, he's called the Sage Fist.
  • Nice Guy: Originally portrayed as one. And still, while he's certainly evil, Takeda still notes that there's an aura around him he can't bring himself to hate.
  • Pet the Dog: He genuinely acknowledges Kenichi's thanks to him.
    You've grown well, boy!
    • When Tanimoto was about to be murdered by his employees as a child he proceeded to save the kid and give him some advice on how to save himself next time. And he was just passing by and stumbled on the scene.
    • While he shows no remorse killing martial artists, he carves statues, like Akisame, to cope with the fact he unknowingly killed Tanaka's unborn child.
    • He ultimately stops Rimi's body from self-destructing at the last moment and lets her and Ryuuto leave YOMI in peace.
  • Razor-Sharp Hand: He is capable of piercing hands with his fingers.
  • Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: Attempts to pull this on Tanaka. It didn't work, as Ogata overpowered and killed him.
  • The Unfettered: Believes the truest purpose of martial arts is to destroy one's opponent, and that using martial arts to protect others is weak and dirtying its original intent.
  • Villain Has a Point: While his speech after Rimi passes out is more to show how much he only cares about his experiments in martial arts, he is completely right in that many martial artists often died in trying to perfect their art. He saves Rimi anyway.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Actually subverted; he is more than willing to kill, but only those who are willing to kill him. He is more than willing to use people in experiments that would result in harm or death, but only if they are willing and even warns of the dangers.
  • Why Can't I Hate You?: A feeling many of his opponents have voiced. His love for martial arts is 100% genuine.
  • Would Hit a Girl/Would Harm a Child: Another of those things that should make him a monster, but doesn't, because it shows that he considers everyone and anyone who steps up to fight him as a Worthy Opponent, regardless of age or gender. He even handicaps himself to fight at his opponent's level.
    • However, when he discovered he'd killed a pregnant woman, he was not happy; the woman may have made the choice to risk her life fighting him, but the baby hadn't.
  • Younger Than They Look: He looks and acts very mature, giving the impression of a physically fit middle-aged man, but he's only 28. For comparison, that makes him younger than Apachai. He and Gaidar are tied for youngest male grandmasters in the series, before Kenichi in the epilogue.

     Alexander Gaidar, (Ice)

Alexander Gaidar, Ice

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gaidar_alex_9182.jpg

  • Black Eyes of Evil: He has black eyes and is a villain.
  • Does Not Like Guns: Which is ironic considering he is a colonel in the Russian military.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Somewhat feminine-looking, but he is still noticeably male.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Akisame, right down to artistic talent.
  • Eviler than Thou: He's willing to kill civilians, and not just other martial artists. And he proved it by killing a whole room of Russian politicians.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He flies into rages pretty easily, so he tries to keep his anger in check by making statues.
  • Kick the Dog: Ordering Kenichi's class killed, which borders on Moral Event Horizon, but thankfully the soldiers sent to do so are defeated.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: He is perfectly willingly to withdraw from a fight if he needs to.
  • Mother Russia Makes You Strong
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Slim as Akisame, but we don't see whether or not he has the same kind of developed muscles as him, and he is still incredibly strong.
  • Personof Mass Destruction: Destroyed an entire battalion on his own because he was in a rage. They don't call him the Fist of Destruction for nothing.
  • Pet the Dog: Seems to truly care for Boris. Literally the only time he has ever been shown without a focused lack of expression or face of fury, is when talking to Boris.

     Silkwat Junazard (King)

Silkwat Junazard, Yudis, King

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jenazad_5853.jpg

  • Badass Boast:
Silkwat: So what? If you are a King, then I am a GOD.
  • Blood Knight: So much so that he'll do whatever it takes to keep Tidat Kingdom a war-torn hellhole just so he can make good use of his martial arts ability.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: In a sense. His master once warned him that nobody would ever defeat him by sheer skill or power, but might defeat him with a greater dedication to martial arts.
  • Combat Pragmatist: His fighting style is incredibly versatile and goes for vital hits.
    • It's the only way a death match against one of the Nine should be done.
  • The Ditz: Seriously, you find birds with a greater attention span than Silkwat. Also, he seems to have an embittered feud with kitchen utensils and plates.
  • Didn't Think This Through: To the point of becoming his defining characterization. In kidnapping Miu for his attempt to obtain a disciple, he gets Sakaki, Hongo, and Hayato pissed. And Saiga.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Was bewildered that Miu tried to heal his mortal wound even in a state of mind-controlled bloodlust.
  • Evil Mentor: To Radin Tidat Jihan and the brainwashed Miu, who he trained in silat and is the direct cause of her now being able to use Dou ki.
  • Evil Vegetarian: He is frequently shown chomping on fruit, and according to the databook, he only eats fruit. He eats the whole thing, stem, peels and seeds included. In one scene he is even shown biting a pineapple together with the skin.
  • Fair-Weather Mentor: Actually averted. While harsh and brutal and with low attention deficit, it shows that he was in fact a very "competent" mentor, very thorough in his teaching and no different that the Ryozanpaku kind, if a little more evil. But don't you dare to disappoint him or soil the Pencak Silat for your petty reasons or he will end you.
  • Fallen Hero: Helped out his country to break through the UN soldiers, but soon finds that Victory Is Boring... and it gets worse from there.
  • Informed Ability: As a master of all styles of Silat, it's directly stated that he has also mastered the armed styles. In reality, almost all Silat styles traditionally place equal emphasis on weapons and unarmed combat, with some even favoring weapons over bare hands. Despite this, we never see him fighting with weapons, likely because his own body is more powerful than any blade could be.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His arc is the most serious so far.
  • Mad Scientist: In the realm of martial arts. He has collected an encyclopedic understanding of silat and developed his own "supreme" style from the results. His means of doing so is "experimenting" on his own disciples.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: His debut has him setting off an avalanche by screaming at a mountainside.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Never shown without his stylized monster mask. That is, outside his village.
  • Mind Manipulation: Managed to do this to Miu.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His last name means "corpse" in Malay or Indonesian.
    • His epithet, "Demon Fist God," is not the nickname of a man you want to get too close to, either. Almost literally so as of Chapter 463 – Akira Hongo reveals that Junazard took a third option in martial arts and went down the path of "Gedou" (literally "the outside path", a heretical doctrine).
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • He managed a silent one out of Hongo by posing.
    • Just by destroying his mask we find out EXACTLY why he was able to give Hayato Furinji a difficult fight.
    • Chapter 475 sees him on the receiving end of several of these when Hongo systematically defeats him.
  • Older Than He Looks: Despite his advanced age, which is somewhere around Furinji's, he has the handsome face of a young "playboy" beneath his mask. His hands and feet, and presumably the rest of his body, are rough and shriveled, however, which he attributes to the nature of his personal longevity techniques.
  • Spirit Advisor: He was called the Guru and apparently he served as an spiritual guide as much as a mentor to Radin... until he crossed the line. In chapter 454, it revealed that he would have probably killed him regardless.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: Junazad actually killed his master in battle. And he praised him, calling him a perfect warrior.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: It's pointed out that it's suicidal to do this in a real fight... unless you are a Master, which then becomes basic etiquette in a Death Match. Hongō is just being rude.
  • Victory Is Boring: The reason he perpetuated civil war in his own nation.
  • Worthy Opponent: Before going mad and becoming evil, he was this to Furinji, being one of the few warriors to ever give the old master a hard fight. In modern times he's still a match for Furinji in strength and skill, but far from worthy.

     Diego Carlo, (Steel)

Diego Carlo, Steel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diego_carlo_1552_6223.jpg

  • Affably Evil: Not like Agaard, but he is one of the most friendly members of Yami.
  • Awesome Ego: He makes sure to give the best possible quality and then some to any form of entertainment he sets up... And names said quality level after himself.
  • Catchphrase: "This is Diego quality!"
  • Dramatic Unmask: Subverted in the most common way, with a mask under the mask.
  • Serious Business: Entertaining whoever watches him fight or anything he set up. He says he'd die for it... And he means it.
  • Wager Slave: As mentioned in his picture quote, he believes that the loser should always obey the winner, thus voluntary going to Big Lock.

     Akira Hongo, (Sky)

Akira Hongo, Sky

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akira_hongo_9869.jpg

  • Berserk Button: Sakaki is the only one who had managed to piss him off by wanting to impose his desires on others. As far as Hongo is concerned, "selfishness" is the greatest crime in the world.
    • He really doesn't like anyone speaking badly about Kanou, as Chapter 471 shows.
  • Boring, but Practical: Since his opponent is so strong and his martial art so complex, he decided to use the most basic Karate katas against him.
  • Cross Counter: How he and Sakaki got their respective scars. It's also done in their last fight, Sakaki using Morote Empi Tobi Hizageri with Hongo counter elbow, knocking both of them out cold. Not that this has slowed their fight .
  • Cycle of Revenge: Tells Radin Tidat Jihan that if he wants to avenge the death of Junazard, he can come challenge Hongo when he's ready.
  • Determinator: As a flashback in Chapter 474 reveals, he was this even as a young man. On one occasion, he got shot with a semi-automatic weapon while protecting a hostage, was hurt badly enough to warrant being put into surgery, and yet he left the hospital and went to win a karate tournament he'd previously been signed up for—all while still being badly injured, bandaged and bleeding from his wounds.
  • Duel to the Death: His fight with Sakaki, regardless of what Sakaki might believe.
  • Enemy Mine: Due to the trope immediately below.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He won't lay a hand on non-combatants. Also, in Chapter 429, he refuses to fight Apachai and Shigure, the former because he's injured from his earlier fight with Agaard, and the latter because she's a woman (despite them attacking him first) which was only an excuse since they were already severely damaged and he was in front of his disciple's resting place.
    • He was absolutely pissed when Silkwat tricked him into attacking Kenichi while he was unconscious. If he hadn't pulled himself out of the attack at the last second, it would have killed the boy. To follow that up, Silkwat kidnapped Miu when she tried to avenge Kenichi by attacking Hongo. Sakaki, Hongo, and the Elder, are going after the man with a vengeance.
    • While he follows the path of Satsujinken, he would never follow the path of Gedou.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Averted. Right up to the present day, the memory of Suzuki Hayime haunts him and Sakaki, motivating them to fight to the bitter end.
  • Genre Savvy: Upon being defeated by Hongo, Junazard asks to see the face of the man who bested him up close...but Hongo doesn't comply because he realizes it would give the other man ample opportunity to deliver a killing blow to him even in his crippled state. Subverted when it comes out that Junazard implanted a hidden murderous suggestion in Miu's mind for just such an event...then double-subverted when Miu tries to heal Junazard's wound instead of attacking Hongo.
    • In an earlier scene, Hongo chooses to walk through the jungle to his destination (Junazard's castle, in a strike attack alongside Ryozanpaku) instead of taking a helicopter because he knows the chopper's engine and rotor-blade noise will betray his movements.
  • Good Powers, Bad People: He is a consummate Sei fighter who uses palm strikes (typically non-killing techniques) to skewer his enemies as if his hands are lances.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Several of his techniques rely on him using stabbing arm-thrusts to deal damage this way. It's also how he defeats Junazard.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: The entry to YAMI was to kill the other participants, since there could be only one. Played straight with Sakaki, who refused to kill no matter what and was sickened by the challenge but subverted with Suzuki, who wanted to die in exactly that way. Sakaki was not amused.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As revealed in a flashback about Shou Kanou at the end of the D of D tournament arc.
  • Noble Demon: He's one of YAMI's most noble members and has a code of honor.
  • Pet the Dog: Kenichi earns a small degree of his respect in Chapter 429 for defending Shou Kanou's earlier sacrifice to save Miu in the D of D tournament.
    • He will murder anybody who stands in his way without hesitation, but after the death of his disciple, whom he truly loved, he refuses to let any disciple die on his watch.
    • In Chapter 463, he advises Sakaki to go support Kenichi because, to quote him: "I don't want any more disciples to lose their lives.".
  • Pointy Ears: He is the only other character to sport this particular inhuman feature along with Niijima and the archer of the armed division, who has parallel twin pupils.
  • Power of the God Hand: Akira Hongo of YAMI's One Shadow Nine Fists is known as God Fist.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Technically is not this. It only looks like this because they attack so unbelievably fast as to exchange dozens of techniques in a matter of second.
  • Razor-Sharp Hand: He is capable of piercing chests with his hands.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: This seems to be the attitude Sakaki and Akira have towards one another.
  • Tranquil Fury: When taunted about his disciple's death, he doesn't go berserk, he just gets FASTER and starts going for the kill strikes more often.
  • Villainous Rescue: Saves Miu and Kenichi from the leader of Yami's chivalrious order and teams up with Sakaki and Hayato against Silkwat. He does it again in Chapter 570, this time saving Nijima from Saiga.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: He and the other Nine Fists either loathe or just don't care about each other. When trying to fight the Ryozanpakou masters at the same time with the exception of Shigure, they were more ready to kill each other than the enemy.
  • Would Not Hit a Girl: Averted. While during the brief skirmish with Shigure (one-sided on her part) in Chapter 429, this was his reason, but he didn't hesitate to crush the leader of the chivalrous team for nearly killing both Miu and Kenichi.

     Mikumo Kushinada, (Water)

Mikumo Kushinada, Water

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mikumo_k_3007.jpg

  • Clothing Damage: She gets very little of this compared to the other girls in the series. However, at the final arc her top got ruined so much till it barely covers her.
  • Dating Catwoman: It's implied that she and the Elder were once involved. However, the Elder claims her recollection of their last meeting is misleading, since they only fought together once before parting for decades.
    • In one of small panels during the last volumes, she meets up with the Elder at a cafe because of a bet they made years ago and she dresses up in a suit for their 'date'. Despite their very opposite ideologies, they are capable of being cordial to each other.
  • Defeat by Modesty: She was stripped naked by Ma Kensei after the Eternal Setting Sun plan failed. However, she manages to escape before Ma could bound her.
  • Evil Mentor: To Chikage Kushinada. To the point that she had her brainwashed to end her conflicted state of mind with wanting to please her master and being with the Shinpaku Alliance.
  • Flash Step: She is fast, even by Ryouzanpaku's standards. She can create semi-solid speed-clones and use them in combat against both Shigure and Sakaki while picking up Chikage from a different rooftop.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Some dialogue from Senzui implies that Mikumo was the one who ultimately started pushing him towards the Eternal Sunset plan.
  • Hellish Pupils: Of the horizontal variety.
  • Ki Manipulation: Probably the most direct and blatant example in the series. In chapter 578, she creates a giant double composed from her ki that is visible from miles away and uses it to attack.
  • Lady of War: Uses a very elegant and efficient Aikijutsu-like style of fighting.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Chapter 484 hints that she may have been the one who pushed Junazard to kidnap and brainwash Miu. She is also the driving force behind the 'Eternal Sunset'.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her robe is open, exposing her cleavage and part of her stomach. It's possible that it's because her breasts are so big that they prevent her robe from closing.
  • Odd Friendship: Somehow, she's close enough to Kii Kagerou they are on friendly terms and she shows absolute tolerance for his antics.
  • Older Than She Looks: Seems to be about as old as Hayato, but according to Silkwat, Kushinada Style slows the aging process to the point that she's physically 20.
  • Psychotic Smirk: She usually has an emotionless or frowned face, but when she (rarily) uses this trope, she looks very scary.
  • Shameful Strip: She was stripped naked at the end of the Eternal Setting Sun arc, as even though she manages to escape, Ma was able to strip her naked as a last insult.
  • Shipper on Deck: Amusingly seems to ship herself and the Elder. In one fourth-wall straining scene, she makes a suggestive comment only for the Elder to dismiss it in such a way to suggest that she was deliberately misleading the readers.
Mikumo: "...Even though we once felt the hot fires blazing between us."
Hayato: "Stop saying misleading things. The things that were burning were forts and tanks!"
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's tall enough to make Sakaki look short and Chikage look like a baby and shapely enough to make Shigure look underdeveloped. Sakaki is about two meters tall and Shigure has melons the size of actual melons.
  • Vapor Wear: It’s clear that she isn’t wearing any bra, and from the sides of her hakama it’s clear she’s not wearing anything under there either.
  • Water Is Womanly: The "Water" of the One Shadow Nine Fists and the only woman in the group, she is a composed jujutsu master who uses a very elegant fighting style.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Apparently Kushinada Style involves 0% strength and 100% skill.

     Agaard Jum Sai, (Flame)

Agaard Jum Sai, Flame

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/agaard_8656.jpg

  • Affably Evil: Literally hasn't stopped smiling since his introduction, enjoys spreading random encouragements and praise around anyone nearby, and seems like a generally nice guy except for the whole 'Yami' thing.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: His disciple Kokin has implied Agaard is far scarier than he seems. He probably isn't called the Demon Emperor of Underground Muay Thai for nothing.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Used to be this to be this to Apachai. Still is, in a way.
  • Evil Red Head: Not evil, but on the side of the antagonists.
  • Friend to All Children: Taught children the martial arts back in Thailand, and was quite popular with them. Apachai might even have picked it up from him.
  • Friendly Enemy: Despite being Apachai's lifelong rival and Evil Counterpart, he seems to have nothing but respect and admiration for Apachai and his skill, and even expressed genuine remorse at the thought of killing him. Confessing this has been pretty much the only time Agaard has stopped smiling.
  • Hellish Pupils: Upon close inspection seem to be the kanji for fire. Huh...
  • Magnetic Anti Villain: People are drawn to him. Even rival Yami members feel an instinctive force that compels them to obey him because of his huge charismatic aura. And he does it unintentionally.
  • Perpetual Smiler: To rival Laughing Fist Diego.
  • Pet the Dog: When he saw Kenichi win against Koukin, he congratulated Kenichi on the win and told Koukin there was no shame in his losing to such a skilled opponent. Gets another next chapter when he assists Kenichi with directions when the Weapons Master he faced tries to kill him.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Caused one in a Flash Back, he deliberately lost the title to a challenger only for the said challenger to die in the middle of the ring after his victory.
  • Razor-Sharp Hand: Punches Apachai through the chest.
  • You Are Already Dead: Pulled this in his youth in a rigged underground fight where Agaard needed to lose or else Apachai would be taken away to the opponent's gym. Agaard "lost," and his opponent dropped dead about twenty seconds later.

     Sehrul Rahman, (Void)

Sehrul Rahman, Void

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rahman_6878.jpg

  • Beard of Evil: Turns out to be a weakness. Sakaki grabs him by the beard during their fight in the helicopter and begins bouncing him off of the roof, floor and walls.
  • Berserk Button: Using someone as a human shield or a blackmail tool, even if said person is an enemy prisoner; for him, that dishonors the way of the Satsujinken. Mikumo got on the wrong end of a palm-attack from him for threatening to kill Shigure in an attempt to make the Ryuzanpakou fighters surrender.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's a pretty gentle guy when not fighting. He had no desire to pit his disciple against Kenichi, stopped Chikage from harming herself as punishment for failing her mission, and even wanted to take Rachel under his protection to keep her safe from Jenezad.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He has no problem with killing his opponents or even the horrors that Yami's plan would unleash upon the world. But threatening to kill a prisoner in order to stop one's opponents is taking things too far.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: His screams can induce crippling fear.
  • Pressure Point: Uses this to highly lethal effect.
  • Touch of Death: Through the use of pressure points.

     Sougetsu Ma (Moon)

Sougetsu Ma, Moon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ma_sougetsu_9649.jpg

  • The Alcoholic: Always carrying a gourd of someone alcoholic drink, though he is never seen drunk.
    • Hermit even said his tuition fee was cases of expensive drinks.
  • The Aloner: He left China because he felt there was never any place for him there.
  • Cain and Abel: Kensei's older brother. But when one of his allies demands he seal the deal by finishing off Kensei personally, he attacks his "ally" instead and fights alongside his brother.
  • Evil Mentor: Hermit claims Sougetsu is a hard master who enjoyed bullying him during training. However, the two have been shown to get along fairly well on panel.
  • Namesto Run Away From Really Fast: He's known as the Fierce Fist God.
  • No One Could Survive That!: Believed to have died in a fire, though some people do question it, and sure enough he turns out to be alive.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He and Kensei share being two of China's best fighters, but that's about it. Kensei is short and toned, Sougetsu is huge and muscular. Kensei is charismatic and fun, Sougetsu is a loner and scary. Kensei uses martial arts to protect, Sougetsu uses them to destroy.

  • There Was a Door: Headbutts his way through a wall to get past a locked door.
