Destroyers (DD)

     The Asashio-class
  • Adorably Precocious Child: They are some of the youngest looking Destroyers — to the point that the fans refer to their choice of clothing as an elementary school uniform — yet some of them don't act like kids.
  • Guns Akimbo: They carry their 12.7 Twin Guns and Quad Torpedo Tubes in a Hand Cannon-like manner.
  • Modesty Shorts: The earliest shipgirls of this class didn't wear any shorts under their skirts, the newer ones all do.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: Downplayed. All ships of the said class in their base form wear the same white, long-sleeve shirt, and pale green skirt with suspenders; but only Yamagumo, Asagumo, and Minegumo wear large, colored ribbons (being drawn by Fujikawa, compared to the rest of their sister ships being drawn by Konishi).

"Destroyer class, Asashio. I'm always ready for a battle."

Asashio (Morning Tide) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Asashio. She is a serious and dutiful girl.
  • A-Cup Angst: In Shimakaze, Girl of the Whirlwind, she reacted poorly after Shimakaze wondered why Asashio was so slow even with her smaller fuel tanks.
  • Class Representative: Not exactly, but in GotW, Shimakaze often mocks her, saying that she acts like one. Fans would follow suit eventually.
  • Comically Serious: Always serious regardless of the situation. She even claims that she's studying on how to play on the beach in her Summer line.
  • Foil: To Shimakaze in Shimakaze, Girl of the Whirlwind.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: If she gets sunk, she'll makes a remark about the enemy who sank her that has an air of this, referring to how her historical counterpart was sunk while trying to rescue survivors from other ships.
Asashio: To attack me when I'm on a rescue operation...... How cheap.
  • Oblivious to Love: She is so serious that she mistakes the Admiral's apparent love confession for a strategy meeting in her wedding line.
Asashio: Admiral, what is it, calling me out to such a place. Just the two of us… ah, this is... a strategy meeting, yes?
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: In her Kai Ni D form, which makes her look like a young lady attending a private school.
  • Serious Business: She's not only serious about battles, but about everything. She gets mocked for this in Shimakaze, Girl of the Whirlwind.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her Kai Ni makes her the second best attacker amongst destroyers in night battle (on par with Ayanami, only behind Yuudachi). She has a reversible remodel in the form of a Kai Ni Dnote  which reduces her offensive abilities but improves her durability, her AA and gives her the second best max ASW in the game (only behind Isuzu).

"Destroyer class, Ooshio~! A small body with large torpedoes! Leave it to me."

Ooshio (Spring Tide) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Ooshio. A cheerful, high-spirited girl.
  • Ascended Extra: She becomes one of the Starter Equipments in Kancolle Kai.
  • Genki Girl: Acts as one for her ship class. She's always full of energy no matter if it's raining or sunny.
  • Girlish Pigtails: A pair of short ones.
  • Hot-Blooded: Always speaks in a cheerful tone.
    Ooshio: Yeaah, bo~~m!
  • Petite Pride: She mentions this in her introductory line.
    • Memetic Mutation: Which of course in fandom is jokingly referred to as a sexually suggestive phrase.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: If she gets damaged.
    Ooshio: I'm! Still! Okay!
  • Took a Level in Badass: Becomes much more powerful on second remodel. Before June 30, 2016 patch that buffed Ayanami's firepower by 2 points, her night battle power was equal to Ayanami's, having slightly less Firepower but slightly better Torpedo. Compared to Ayanami she also has stronger Anti-Air, ASW and LOS, but with slightly less HP and armour and worse Luck.
  • Unexpected Character: A variant - Being such a relative unknown in the community, a lot of fans were surprised that she would get a second remodel so quickly. The date of its release, April 1st 2016, did not help.

Michishio (3rd)

"Michishio here. Why did I get assigned to such a fleet?"

Michishio (High Tide) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Michishio. She is a cranky, sulky girl.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She acts like this whenever she isn't complaining about something.
  • The Cynic: Not on Kikuzuki's level, but still, not exactly a ray of sunshine.
  • Survivor Guilt: Heavily implied. Despite being a grump, she gets really nervous and lonely when going to a dock. Which is based on her Real Life counterpart; when the destroyer Michishio was under repair for about a year, her fellow sisters in Destroyer Division 8 - Asashio, Ooshio, and Arashio - were all sunk.
  • Tsundere: She is quite cold towards the Admiral, but according to Arashio, she admires him/her.
Arashio: Everybody admires the Admiral, you know? That Michishio-chan, she really does, no? Ufufufufu.

"Oh, I haven't introduced myself yet, have I? My name is Arashio."

Arashio (Stormy Tide) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Arashio. She is often giggling and trying to act feminine.
  • Girly Bruiser: She tries very hard to be feminine, but she still takes part in the fighting alongside everyone else.
  • Modesty Shorts: Fairly long ones.
  • The Ojou: Acts like one; presumably she is built/born also in Kobe.
  • Perpetual Smiler: She is often seen giggling, like Atago.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Trades the shorts mentioned below for pantyhose in her Kai Ni art.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: If she gets sunk:
Arashio: Oh my... you've sunk me... you'll regret this...
  • Took a Level in Badass: With her second remodel released in the January 25th 2017 update, she becomes very similar to Ooshio (including having the same night battle power and needing a blueprint) except she trades ASW for AA and a gun for a searchlight. Thankfully, she's also a more recognizable character due to her personality.
  • Vanity Is Feminine: She acts feminine and takes care of her appearance a lot. Also, she dislikes bombers because they damaged her smokestack.
Arashio (damaged): Geez... my appearance is ruined...

Yamagumo (5th)

Artist: Fujikawa

Voiced by: Yui Horie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yamagumo_8.png

"Good morning~~. Asashio Destroyer number six, Yamagumo. Please treat me well!"

Yamagumo (Mountain Cloud) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Yamagumo. She is slow and does things at her own pace, but she is very attached to her sister Asagumo.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Even Asagumo admits that Yamagumo is a bit... off.
  • Big Sister Worship: To Asagumo, who is actually the younger of the two.
  • Dissonant Serenity: She talks in a slow and sluggish tone of voice all the time. Even if she is sinking.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears long black bike shorts that are barely visible at the hemline of her skirt.
  • Repressed Memories: She feels uncomfortable when something reminds her how her real life counterpart and her fleet were sunk, such as feeling bad after midnight, or when meeting Fusou and Yamashiro.
Yamagumo: Is that...Fusou and Yamashiro? Uuh, for some reason, my stomach is starting to hurt...uuh, guess I'll go home...
  • Tender Tears: Sheds them after seeing Asagumo with "an unknown guy" in her hourly lines. Turns out she mistook Z-1 for a boy.
  • Those Two Guys: With Asagumo.

"Asashio-class destroyer, Asagumo, reporting in! So you're the Commander... huh. Hmm. Well, it's fine. I'll do it!"

Asagumo (Morning Cloud) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Asagumo.
  • Big Little Sister: To the older and ditzy Yamagumo.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Very long ones.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Her panties are never seen even in her damaged sprite, but her bra is sky blue and has a cute lion head on it.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears black bike shorts. Hers are rather short though, and only visible when her clothes are torn from combat damage.
  • Those Two Guys: With Yamagumo.
  • Rare Random Drop: Even moreso than Hatsukaze and Ooyodo, as she is only available as a rare drop at Map 1-6, and the node only drops her only under a specific enemy formationnote  and has a chance of not dropping any ships at all even with an S-rank victory.
  • Together in Death: If she gets sunk.
Asagumo: ...Fufu, Yamagumo... We're together again. It's not like I'm... like I'm lonely, you know...
  • Tsundere: Implied to be one for the Admiral, as she always backs off after saying something.
  • Unknown Rival: Self-declared rival of the Kagerou-class.
  • When She Smiles: On her remodel. Most of the art differences between standard and remodeled Asagumo are subtle enough that they could easily be overlooked if not viewing them side by side. What you'll notice immediately is her remodel's cute smile.

Natsugumo (7th)

"Yes? ...Ah, yes. I'm the Asashio-class destroyer, Natsugumo... Admiral, umm, I'm pleased to meet you."

Natsugumo (Summer Cloud) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Natsugumo. She's introduced as a drop in the E-2 and E-3 Maps of the Summer 2022 Event.

  • Born Lucky: Zigzags. While she starts at single digits in both forms, she maxes out to a medium 43 at base and 53 at Kai. She was able to damage USS Perch, while she also participated in the Midway invasion. Near misses from US dive bombers ruptured her hull, sinking in 1942.
  • Middle Child Syndrome: Feels that she's unremarkable compared to her sisters. She also feels somewhat left out from their social circles.
"Minegumo has Murasame. It leaves me feeling kinda lonely..."
"Yeah, Asagumo and Yamagumo are close. I'm a bit jealous of their relationship. Just a bit."
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears black mini bike shorts, only visible when her clothes are torn.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's very shy and soft-spoken.

Minegumo (8th)

Artist: Fujikawa

Voiced by: Yume Miyamoto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kc_minegumo.png

"Good morning, Admiral. I'm Asashio-class destroyer, Minegumo, reporting for duty."

Minegumo (Summit Cloud) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Minegumo. She's introduced in the Winter 2019 Event as the E-1 Reward.
  • Born Unlucky: Starts off with a dismal 6 at base, 9 at Kai, presumably because of the time she collided with Kuroshio and Natsushio, along with sinking in 1943.
  • Braids of Action/Girlish Pigtails: Not as actiony, but still present.
  • Hidden Buxom: Downplayed. She has the greatest "displacement" amongst her sisters, though it is not exactly apparent on her damaged art.
  • Nonstandard Character Design: She wears the standard Asashio-class uniform but is the only one who wears a ribbon with a checkered pattern. The ribbon has Murasame's colors, hinting their close partnership and Minegumo's Undying Loyalty towards her.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears black mini bike shorts, only visible when her clothes are torn.

Arare (9th)

"I'm Arare.... I won't say 'ncha-'... Look after me..."

Arare (Hail) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Arare.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She seems to act unconsciously most of the time.
    Arare: "I'm...attacking?"
  • Dramatic Ellipsis: She uses a lot of ellipsis when talking, like Hatsuyuki.
  • Ignored Confession: Thanks to being a stoic Terse Talker, she apparently does this in her marriage line.
Arare: "Ah… Commander, what is it? I want to get back to work.. Yeah…"
  • I'm Cold... So Cold...: If she gets sunk.
Arare: Ah... water is getting in... it's cold...
  • The Quiet One: She is a girl of few words.
  • The Stoic: Never emotes much and speaks in an even tone.
  • Terse Talker: She has some of the shortest lines in the game.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her second remodel implemented in the April 6th 2018 update sees her gain stats similar to Ooshio and Michishio except that she traded some of her surface attack power for one of the best ASW stats amongst destroyers in the game (behind Asashio K2D and Jervis at a max of 81, 113 after marriage).
  • Verbal Tic: "n'cha". An obvious Shout-Out to Doctor Slump.

Kasumi (10th)

Artist: Konishi

Click here to see her remodeled form

"Kasumi, ready to go. Keep up with me!"

Kasumi (Mist) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Kasumi. She acts irritated and bored most of the time, but has a lot of pride in her abilities.
  • Big Little Sister: Despite being the last ship, Kasumi is notably worldly and battle-hardened. Compared to Asashio, who is dutiful but naive, Kasumi is hard-willed and hot-headed while also nurturing in a tough love sort of way. Kiyoshimo is usually her target of concern.
  • Boisterous Bruiser
  • Born Lucky: At 37 base Luck, both of her Kai Nis have even more than Ushio, who outlived her.
  • Cool, but Inefficient: She can perform Anti-Air Cut-Ins in her Kai Ni B form, once given the necessary equipment for enabling the same. However, not only does she has the highest level requirement for her remodelnote  among all the shipgirls capable of an air-defense role, but her AACI is executed at the highest priority while offering weaker air defense compared to Maya note  or Akizuki-class destroyers note , effectively relegating her air-defense role as a last resort when the Admiral had no other air defense providers available.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her Kai Ni B has a single long stocking on the left. This, again, is a reference to Operation Ten-Go where she's one of the destroyers who escorted Yamato, who also wears her stocking the same way.
  • Jerkass: Rivals Akebono in calling the Admiral derisve nicknames. She does mellow down a bit with her Kai Ni, though.
  • Precision F-Strike: Drops this gem when viewing the player score:
Kasumi: It's a letter. Don't make me repeat myself, you piece of shit.
  • Super Mode: Kasumi has an alternative "Kai Ni B"note  form which turns her into an Anti-Air Destroyer, allowing her to do Anti-Air Cut-ins like Maya and Akizuki without an AA director, in exchange for weaker firepower and torpedo stat. Also, she can carry Large Radars that normally can't be used by destroyers.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Treats the Admiral like a servant and the enemy as weaklings.
  • This Cannot Be!: If she gets sunk.
    Kasumi: To think that I'm sinking... I won't... I won't accept this...!
  • Took a Level in Badass: She becomes the 1st Destroyer to receive an upgrade with an alternate form (into a Anti-Air Destroyer) that allows her to equip larger radar. She can also equip a Fleet Command Facility as well as a Daihatsu Transport. That said, she also has the highest remodeling requirement amongst all destroyers for all her perks.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She has started to become less abrasive since Fall 2015, but her second remodel makes her very courteous and polite compared to her previously was toward the Admiral.
  • Tsundere: Towards the Admiral. Especially in her marriage line.
Kasumi: "Oh, for the Commander to be in such a place, he must have such copious free time, huh... eh... present? For me? Erm.. Ah.. you idiot.."
  • Worthy Opponent: She acknowledges the enemy if she is badly damaged.
Kasumi: "I guess we have some half-decent opponents. I give you my praise."

     The Kagerou-class

  • Modesty Shorts: Worn by the first three Kagerous (Kagerou, Shiranui, and Kuroshio).
  • Nonuniform Uniform: The class has the largest variation of character designs for a single ship type. There are two general uniform designs which most of the Kagerou-class adhere to in varying degrees and a couple of genuine oddballs. The first basic uniform design (examplified by Konishi) uses a blazer top and the second basic uniform design (examplified by Parsley and Shizuma Yoshinori) uses a Sailor Fuku top.
  • Rare Random Drop: While the first three ships are almost Com Mons like the other Destroyers note , the rest of the Kagerou-class cannot be crafted save for Yukikaze, and are only obtainable from boss battles of mid- or end-game stages. Yukikaze herself (with a rainbow rarity compared to the others' silver) counts, albeit as a drop from a few more boss nodes (5-4 is the best option, so she is common among very experienced players), as well as being a rare result from crafting (you have to use the resources for a light cruiser instead of destroyer to even have a chance).

"Great to meet you! I'm Kagerou. Treat me well!"

Kagerou (Heat Haze) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Kagerou.

She is the main character of the Light Novel series Kagerou, Setting Sail!, where as a newly-transferred Fleet Girl to the front lines of the Yokosuka Naval District, she aims to prove that she's not merely a "bumpkin from Kure".
  • Artistic License – Ships: She was part of the IJN's Circle 3 program, not Circle 4 as stated in her library intro.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: In fanworks, to contrast with the serious Shiranui.
  • Cool Big Sis: Her seasonal lines reveal she likes to dote on Shiranui. Similarly, in her sisters' hourly lines, it's shown that she's constantly looking for her younger sisters.
  • Genki Girl: She's cheerful, vigorous, and optimistic.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Has two short ones that are tied with yellow ribbons.
  • This Cannot Be!: If she gets sunk.
Kagerou: I'm sinking? Really? No way...
  • Those Two Guys: With Shiranui or Kuroshio mainly in fanworks.

"I'm Shiranui. I look forward to your guidance and encouragement."

Shiranui (Phosphorescent Light) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Shiranui. She is a stoic girl who loves battles.
  • Bad Liar: As seen in her idle line:
Shiranui: Shiranui is absolutely not bored. No, please don't mind me. Do as you like...
  • Blood Knight: Loves battles a bit too much.
  • Character Catchphrase: When she feels particularly annoyed or that the Admiral is displeased, she'll growl "Did Shiranui make a mistake?" or some variation thereof.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: In fanworks, to contrast with the cheerful Kagerou.
  • Dying Curse: If she gets sunk. Some speculate that this could be either said to the one who shot at her, or to her Admiral.
Shiranui: If this is death, everyone is coming with me... That includes you.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Subverted; despite her pink hair, she's rather cold and reserved.
  • The Stoic: Talks without much intonation, and in fanworks she tends to have a flat expression that can rival even that of Kaga.
  • Third-Person Person: Unlike many others, it's used to give her a more detached feeling.
  • Those Two Guys: With Kagerou or Kuroshio as seen in fanworks and later on with Hayashimo.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Her deep voice makes her sound like a grown woman, rather than the 12-year-old girl she looks like.

"Fourth ship of the Kagerou-class destroyers, I'm Oyashio. Commander, please give my regards on leading Desdiv 15. Please take care of me!"

Oyashio (Parental Tide) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Oyashio. She's dutiful and has a need to report everything to the Admiral. She's introduced as the E6 drop for the Spring 2016 Event.
  • Big Sister Worship: To Kuroshio, who's actually the more laidback of the two.
  • Comically Serious: Not to Asashio's extent, but she's always serious, dutiful and often has the need to report even the most trivial things.
Commander, I have a report. The sunset is beautiful! beautiful... I would like to take a picture of it. I'm so sorry! On duty...
  • Punny Name: Due to her name she often gets portrayed as the mother of Ushio ("Tide").
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: If she gets sunk.
Oyashio: I... Going to sink again... Kuroshio... Kagerou nee-san... I'm... so...r...ry...
  • Third-Person Person: When speaking to the Admiral, she refers to herself in third person; but with everyone else she speaks normally.
  • Those Two Guys: With Kuroshio.
  • Verbal Tic: Her need to report everything.

"Sir! I'm the 5th ship of the Kagerou-class destroyers, Hayashio. I'm from Uraga. Admiral, nice to meet you. Hey, Admiral, are you listening?"

Hayashio (Swift Tide) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hayashio, introduced as the E3 map reward in the Spring 2022 Event.
  • Born Unlucky: Somewhat zigzagged. She starts at a dismal 9 at base and a low 12 at Kai, but maxes out to 48 at base and 63 at Kai. While her historical self had participated in several invasions along much of the Southeast Asian islands, she would later be bombed by an American bomber during a transport run in November 1942. Her forward turret's port side would catch fire, and her crew had to abandon ship when one of her magazines exploded, before being scuttled by Shiratsuyu, finally stricken from the naval register in December 1942.
  • Shown Their Work: Her intro line mentions that she's from Uraga, referencing both her birthplace the city Uraga, and the Uraga Docking Company that built her.

Hatsukaze (7th)

Artist: Konishi

Voiced by: Sarah Emi Bridcutt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kc_hatsukaze.png

"I'm Hatsukaze, nice to meet you. Admiral, how many did you have before me, I wonder?"

Hatsukaze (First Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hatsukaze. A girl who acts hostile towards the Admiral and also idolizes Myoukou.
  • Achilles' Heel: Her bow, because it had been sheared off by Myoukou when the latter accidentally ran into her while trying to retreat from the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay.
  • Big Sister Worship: Not to anyone of her ship class, but to Myoukou, who is a Heavy Cruiser.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: She asks the Admiral how many of 'Me' he/she has had before. She may be aware of the fact that you can obtain multiple ships of the same kind...
    • Irony: She is a Rare Random Drop of the boss node of 3-4, have 3% chance to drop if and only if you get a complete win in boss. The map is simply one of the most difficult normal maps, note It is unlikely for an admiral to ever have multiple Hatsukazes.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: She acts hostile towards her Admiral because she hopes he/she will become stronger from it.
Hatsukaze: Admiral... I just wanted you to become stronger... That's why I said bad things to you... I'm... sorry...
  • Tsundere: Towards the Admiral, as shown in her sinking line (above) and marriage line.
Hatsukaze: Why're you calling me over here? I've got maintenance and resupply - I'm quite busy... eh? Such a large bouquet... for me? No way, I'm happy... haaa.. just what are you saying, stupid Admiral! Geez, I'll take it already!
  • With Friends Like These...: In the 4koma she has a problem with Yukikaze (her roommate) screaming "Yukikaze will not sink!" repeatedly in her sleep.

"The eighth ship of Kagerou-class destroyer, I'm Yukikaze. I'll be in your care!"

Yukikaze (Snowy Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Yukikaze. A Genki Girl who likes boasting about her high good luck (50, 60 when upgraded in the game) and her title as the "Unsinkable ship". She is often compared to some sort of rodent or a beaver due to her prominent upper teeth and often carries a pair of binoculars around.
  • Big Eater: As seen in Episode 6 of Let's Meet at Sea, Yukikaze is not above eating Hamakaze's snacks at the first opportunity. That said, this would also bite her in the ass when she had an upset stomach from eating too much mikan.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: During a battle, she will say something along the lines of "I won't sink!" regardless of how much damage she's sustained. Unless she does sink.
    "Yukikaze will not sink!"
    • Lampshaded in the 4-koma where her roommate Hatsukaze gets bothered a lot by her shouting the phrase... in her sleep. Over and over.
  • Born Lucky: Has the highest luck stat (and joint highest evasion stat, tied with Shimakaze...until Warspite came along) in the game, reflecting how she avoided getting sunk in some of the most brutal naval battles of the Pacific War.
  • Childish Older Sibling: Isokaze sees her as this in Let's Meet at Sea.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Tokitsukaze, according to the latter's hourly lines.
  • Doom Magnet: To the extent that it's been said that her high luck is due to absorbing the luck of other ships and even entire countries.Explanation
  • Genki Girl: Easily the most cheerful and excitable of her class.
  • Glass Cannon: As frail as any other Destroyer, but due to her high Luck, she's perfect for Night Battles with a Cut-In (an Equipment-Setup consisting of Torpedo and Main Gun combinations), a special attack with chance of activation that relies on Luck. Cut-Ins are famous for wrecking even the asses of flagship battleships in the enemy formations to kingdom come (read: They Oneshot them). The downside of this and where the Glass part comes in, is the aforementioned vulnerability of Destroyers, especially in Day Battles. If Yukikaze gets hit by the very same BB you want her to oneshot in the night battle, her health will go into red and she will be unable to fight at night or proceed to the next battle.
  • Irony:
Yukikaze (when attacking): I will protect the fleet! (Guess what happened to the ships she escorted.)
  • Nonuniform Uniform: Her uniform is the Kagerou's second variety, except she uses an oversized shirt as a dress and forgoes the skirt altogether. Ironically among her division mates, all of them save Hatsukaze wear some variation of Yukikaze's style, making Hatsukaze the Custom Uniform wearer in their little grouping.
  • Not So Invincible After All: If she gets sunk.
Yukikaze: The unsinkable ship... does not exist in this world...
  • Odd Friendship: With Johnston, a ship she fought at the Battle Off Samar, based off the real life Yukikaze's captain saluting Johnston as she sank, and crew tossing cans of food to sailors in the water.
  • Red Baron: In fanworks she is often referred to as either Reaper/Shinigami in reference to her history.
    • She is also known as Yukikaze of Kure, after her home port and The Unsinkable Ship or The Miracle Ship for participating through most of Japan's most ferocious battles and surviving till the end of the war.
  • Sole Survivor: Of not only the Kagerou-class, but of all the IJN vessels that survived the war implemented upon the game's release prior to Souya's introduction in 2021. Explanation
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her binoculars, with which she saw the demise of her fellow fleets.
  • Verbal Tic: She always refers to the admiral as "しれぇ" ("Shiree", Commander). Memetic Mutation makes this her cry.

"There's a nice wind coming...The next generation destroyer prototype, it is now mine, Amatsukaze's, turn."

Amatsukaze (Heavenly Wind) is the personification of the Japanese Destroyer Amatsukaze. She makes frequent references to wind and enjoys taking walks along the beach, for the sea breeze.
  • Custom Uniform: Her top is essentially a brown version of Yukikaze's top. She also mixes in design elements from Shimakaze (Rensouhou-kun among other things) as well as some new design elements of her own (the strap contraption that seems to hold both her hat and her stockings in place).
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: She wears a white glove only on her right hand.
  • Fragile Speedster: Both Downplayed and Enforced at the same time. Downplayed because she is actually one of the most durable destroyers, Enforced because her remodeled form comes with the best turbine in the game, increasing her already above-average Evasion stat beyond Shimakaze and Yukikaze. Beyond that, a maxed and married Amatsukaze's evasion (118) is third behind Kamikaze/Uranami (119) and Shimakaze (123).
  • Girlish Pigtails: Very long ones, alongside her not-tied hair.
  • Historical In-Joke:
    • Due to her being the technical predecessor of Shimakaze, her overall design is based primarily on Shimakaze, complete with a wonky turret called Rensouhou-kun.note
    • Her relatively high durability for a ship-girl with a single remodel as well as being the destroyer with the highest armor in the game actually stems from an incident where her bow was destroyed by a submarine attack. Miraculously, she didn't sink but she was presumed to be sunk until she was found 6 days later by a patrol boat and eventually towed to Singapore, where she got a temporary bow rigged on. This temporary bow is the other reason why she has higher evasion.note , after this when she was finally taken out of action for good from an air raid she was able to be beached instead of sunk then was later scuttled by her crew after recovery of her proved to be out of the question and then her partially sunken hulk was then expended as a target ship for bombing practice by the Japanese, So Amatsukaze saw and survived quite a bit of abuse in her last years.
  • I'm Cold... So Cold...: If she gets sunk.
Amatsukaze: I finally sank into the sea...it's so cold...and dark...
  • Necessary Drawback: As a trade-off for her good stats and durability, she consumes more fuel, like Shimakaze does.
  • Rare Random Drop: Unlike Hatsukaze, she is one of the Spring 2014 Event awards, so its later rarity get overshadowed. However for any player joined after 2014 spring, she is an utter luxury: a rare drop in the already resource-consuming Summer 2014 Event. Consuming each resources over 30000 to get an Amatsukaze is not uncommon.note
  • Tsundere: Implied by her somewhat grumpy-looking base art and her smile in her remodeled art. At any rate, it's downplayed like with Murakumo.
  • When She Smiles: Her remodel has her making a small smile. Along with that, her chimney-like headband bubbles out little heart-shaped smoke bubbles, a sign that she is warming up to the admiral.

"Tenth ship of the Kagerou-class destroyers, Tokitsukaze... has arrived!"

Tokitsukaze (Timely Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Tokitsukaze.
  • Animal Motif: Her ear-like flaps of hair have lead to many comparisons to a puppy.
  • Big Sister Worship: Towards Yukikaze, Hatsukaze and Amatsukaze, and it's reflected in her clothing. Justified, since the four of them were members of the 16th Destroyer Division.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Invokes this when the Admiral proposes to her in her wedding line.
Tokitsukaze: "Commander, what's the matter? Are you looking for Hatsukaze? Wrong? Amatsukaze? That's wrong too? Then who? Huh? Ah, me? Why? Err, err... Thanks"
  • Nonuniform Uniform: She wears Yukikaze's uniform with the shirt tied on one side as well as wearing a variant of Amatsukaze's hat.
  • Verbal Tic: Always refers to the player as "しれぇ", just like Yukikaze.
  • We Will Meet Again: If she gets sunk.
Tokitsukaze: "Yukikaze, Hatsukaze, Amatsukaze... I'll see, you... soon..."

"It's me, Urakaze, nice to meet 'ya!"

Urakaze (Seaside Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Urakaze. She is a cheerful girl that constantly reminds the Admiral not to make reckless decisions.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Isokaze mentioned in Let's Meet at Sea that Urakaze took a direct hit from an Abyssal submarine attack while escorting Kongou and retired from Ship Girl duty the next day.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her hair and eyes are the same blue color.
  • Genki Girl: Easily the most spirited out of her division mates.
  • Guns Akimbo: Again, same as Hamakaze.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: Her sinking line:
Urakaze: Don't worry 'bout me, it's better to do a speedy withdrawal... from here... yeah...
  • Nonuniform Uniform: She wears the second uniform variant with rolled sleeves and elbow gloves. Not counting her hat.
  • The Reliable One: What she wants to be for the Admiral and the fleet.
Urakaze: "There's no need to worry. Because I'm here this fleet is safe!"
  • Took a Level in Badass: Since April 2018, she gained an alternative first remodel termed D Kai, which improves her overall stats but most significantly her ASW stats, allowing her to specialize in ASW.

"12th Kagerou-class destroyer, Isokaze. Don't worry, I will protect you."

Isokaze (Seashore Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Isokaze.
  • Anti-Air: Her remodelled form gives her AA weaponry, an upgraded Air Radar, and a good AA stat, which reflects her real life refitting.
  • Declaration of Protection: Wants to protect the Admiral and her comrades.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: She wears stockings of different lengths. This is implied to be from emulating Yamato, who wears stockings in exactly the same way.
  • Guns Akimbo: She also carries the same weapons like her fellow sisters of 17th Destroyer Division, except when she reaches her kai, the 12.7cm will be replaced by a Dual Purpose Late Model 12.7cm Cannon. With B Kai, she carries a Long 10cm.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Invokes this when the Admiral proposes to her in her wedding line.
Isokaze: "What is it Commander? Having a heart to heart with me. Is it about the organisation of the 19th Destroyer Division from the 2nd Torpedo Squadron? What, it's not. Then is it something about Hamakaze? It's nothing to do with her... I see. Hmm... That ring is... for me... Wh-what... Eh... Uh, ummm..."
  • Lethal Chef: Isokaze is the only one in the 17th Destroyer Division that has no experience in cooking and she's horribly aware of it. She tries to improve by asking cooking tips to her sisters or trying with easy foods such as grilled fish, but it never works.
    • The admiral suffered from a stomach ache after eating her cooking for breakfast. By night, the admiral fled from the office before she could even finish saying 'dinner'.
    • Her Fall 2015 CG has her trying to grill some Pacific saury. Her damaged art has her apparently succeeding...with parts of her clothes burnt and the grill suffering several cracks. Hatakaze's line shows Isokaze trying to grill fish and she doesn't have the heart to tell the girl that she's actually burning it.
    • She seems to be aware of how bad she is, as in her hourly lines she asks her sisters to help her with improving her cooking skills (and still failing anyway). In her married line, she offers the Admiral food before deciding to go to Mamiya instead.
    • In her White Day line, she apparently gave canned food to the Admiral on Valentine's Day, since she's bad at making chocolates too.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: She initially wears a long-sleeved version of the second uniform variant. Once remodeled, her uniform is modified with a few design elements from Yamato (such as a rope instead of a scarf).
  • Those Two Guys: With Hamakaze, by historical references that they are often together in operations and when they got both sunk at Operation Ten-Go.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Since March 2018, she gained a new alternative first remodel termed B Kai which improves her overall stats but significantly increases her Anti-Air stats.

"Destroyer, Hamakaze. Henceforth I shall be attached to your fleet."

Hamakaze (Beach Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hamakaze. A serious and dutiful girl who's very shy around the Admiral.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Surprisingly not in her wedding line, but in the third-anniversary line.
Hamakaze: Admiral. Congratulations to the third anniversary. For this year too, I would like to stay by yo-... Ah, no. Nothing.
  • Determinator: She states several times that this time she'll protect the ships she failed to protect when escorting them in the past. Also, her line when heavily damaged.
This pain... is nothing compared what Kongou and Shinano had went through...!
  • Guns Akimbo: Carries a 12.7cm Twin Cannon in her right hand and a 25mm Twin AA gun in her left. With her B Kai, a Long 10cm twin gun replaces her 12.7cm gun. Her fellow members of the 17th Destroyer Division follows this style as well.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her hair covers her left eye. Appropriately, she's a (somewhat) shy type.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: She wears the short-sleeved version of the second uniform design. This design is essentially a mix between Yukikaze's top and the other Kagerou-class' skirt.
  • Orgasmically Delicious: When she's eating stall food in her Fall 2015 lines.
  • Shrinking Violet: Towards the Admiral. It seems to be only towards him/her, since with other fellow ships she acts normally.
  • Those Two Guys: With Isokaze.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Like Isokaze, she gained a new alternative first remodel termed B Kai on March 2018. It improves her overall stats but significantly increases her Anti-Air stats.

"Admiral, I'm Tanikaze! I'll be in your care from now on."

Tanikaze (Valley Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Tanikaze.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Invokes this when the Admiral proposes to her in her wedding line.
Tanikaze: What a strange Admiral you are to be interested in me, Tanikaze! Then, tell me how you get to love me from the beginning. Hehe, never mind, the night is long, you know.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: She wears the short-sleeved version of the second uniform design, like Hamakaze.
  • Odd Name Out: Amongst the 17th Destroyer Division, Tanikaze is the one who doesn't fit the "Seashore" Theme Naming.
  • Third-Person Person: In half of her lines.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Speaks in a weird Edokko accent despite being built in Osaka. This contrasts with Ryuujou, who speaks in Kansai-ben, but was built in Yokohama, just nearby Tokyo.

"Yo, I'm the 16th Kagerou-class Destroyer, Arashi! Commander, take care of me, 'kay! It's great 'ta meet 'ya!"

Arashi (Storm) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Arashi.

  • Fiery Redhead: She's very boisterous, and has red hair.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: When the Admiral proposes to her in her wedding line:
Arashi: "What's up, Commander? You called for me? You sure you didn't mistake me for Hagi? Ah... are you really ok choosing me? R... really? What's with the formality...it's embarrassing. Eh... to put this on my finger? Ah... Ahaha... It seems a bit a bit inappropriate... but thank you for treating me so warmly!"
  • Sarashi: Revealed when she get damaged. You can't spell "Sarashi" without "Arashi", after all.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her historical counterpart was trailed by American dive bombers on her way back to Akagi and Kaga, resulting in their devastating loss at Midway. Neither her, nor Akagi and Kaga, were aware of this, as it doesn't get mentioned in any of their lines, and little if any of the fanart brings it up either.
  • Those Two Guys: With Hagikaze.
  • We Will Meet Again: If she gets sunk.
Arashi: "I'm... I'm sinking...? Hagi... until next time... Shigure... after this... I'll leave it to you..."
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Arashi is scared of the night, since her Real Life counterpart was sunk in a night battle at Vella Gulf together with Hagikaze and Kawakaze.

"Hagikaze, 17th Ship of the Kagerou-class destroyers, reporting! Commander, please give me your orders!"

Hagikaze (Clover Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hagikaze. A quiet and softspoken girl who's always complaining about her fear of the night.
  • Cloud Cuckoolanders Minder: To Arashi.
Hagikaze: "Commander, did you see Arashi? Huh, you haven’t? Come on, what in the world is she up to? I will give her a good talk about this next time."
  • Face Your Fears: Owing to the circumstances of her sinking, Hagikaze has a fear of the night and darkness. However, she will still summon the courage to go into night battles.
Hagikaze: "The night... The night is still haunting. When I enter the bath, it just comes back to me. "
  • Granola Girl: She always cooks dishes with only vegetables for the Admiral in her hourly lines. Also, in her Valentine line, she makes low fat chocolate and complains that the Admiral's White Day cookies are too sweet.
  • Historical In-Joke: Aside from the tidbits about her sinking, her left sidetail is a reference for her being one of Kaga's escort ships in Battle of Midway and later rescuing her survivors.
  • Hidden Buxom: She's revealed to have a sizable bosom when she's damaged, though not as much as Hamakaze.
  • In-Series Nickname: Arashi shortens her name to Hagi.
  • Little Big Sister: She's more mature and reserved compared to Arashi and she serves as her Cloud Cuckoolanders Minder.
  • Those Two Guys: With Arashi.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Hagikaze is scared of the night, since her Real Life counterpart was sunk in a night battle at Vella Gulf together with Arashi and Kawakaze. However, she makes a bigger fuss about it.

"Hello~! Kagero-class destroyer, Maikaze! I'm not good in gloomy atmospheres!"

Maikaze (Typhoon; lit Dancing Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Maikaze. A cheerful girl who loves dancing.
  • Character Catchphrase: She often says "Alright, ~one ~two!", as if she were about to dance.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: According to Nowaki.
  • Dance Battler: Not exactly, but almost all of Maikaze's lines reference dancing in one way or another.
  • Genki Girl: To contrast with the serious Nowaki.
  • Hidden Depths: In her marriage line.
Maikaze: This is something I can only say to you, Admiral... truthfully, I can't help being scared... so I distract myself by dancing...But, with the Admiral by my side, everything is alright... can I stay close to you some more...?
  • In-Series Nickname: Arashi calls her "Mai".
  • Hot-Blooded: She's very passionate about fighting and dancing.
  • Let's Dance: Says it all the time.
Maikaze: Admiral~ come and dance with me~!
  • Meaningful Name: Maikaze means dancing wind. She references dancing all the time.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: At first she seems like a carefree and ditzy girl who likes dancing a lot, but her marriage line shows that she likes to dance because it makes her less scared of battles.
  • Those Two Guys: With Nowaki.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: In the 4koma, she's afraid of the Iowa class, as she was sunk by Iowa's sister ship New Jersey.

"Akigumo, reporting for duty~ Look after me Admiral~"

Akigumo (Autumn Cloud) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Akigumo. An airhead who likes drawing.
  • Blood Knight: She's notably bloodthirsty in battle. Sometimes during battle, she'll say that she wants to pick a fight with some battleship girls.
  • Doujinshi: Many of her lines hint at her being a doujin artist. Her more recent winter CGs outright shows what she's working for the winter Comiket. It typically involves Kazagumo.
  • Nonstandard Character Design: Drawn by the Yuugumo-class' artist and even wears their uniform, making her sticking out like a sore thumb even in the non-uniformed other Kagerous. This is a reference to the IJN mistaking her for a Yuugumo-class destroyer.
    Akigumo: Uniform? Yuugumo-style, Kagerou-style... Ah, whatever~!
    • With her second remodel, her outfit is basically a Kagerou-class gray version of the remodeled Yuugumo-class uniform, acknowledging both her real class and her relation with the Yuugumo-class.
  • Smug Smiler: Her default expression is a smug grin with raised arms, something that fan artists make a lot of fun of.
  • Those Two Guys: With Makigumo, bordering on Vitriolic Best Buds.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Has a long one.

"I'm Destroyer Shimakaze. I won't lose to anyone in speed. Swiftly like the island breeze."

Shimakaze (Island Wind) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Shimakaze. She often boasts about being the fastest ship and has a cocky attitude. Shimakaze is often accompanied by Rensouhou-chan ("Twin Gun Turret-chan"), familiar-like turrets which originated from Shimakaze's three twin 12.7 cm/50 naval gun turrets.

Shimakaze is the titular character of the manga, Shimakaze, Girl of the Whirlwind, though it would be more accurate to say that she shares the lead role with Asashio, who she regularly butts heads with due to the latter's straight-laced nature.

She also appears in the anime, but instead of being the problem child that she's been shown as in her own manga, she's portrayed instead as a hyperactive and excitable if absent-minded girl. Despite this, she's shown to be one of the most skilled Destroyers on the base, easily outfighting a squad of enemy destroyers while Fubuki had enough trouble with a single one.
  • Accidental Misnaming: In the anime, she got rather annoyed with Kongou for calling her "Zekamashi".
Shimakaze: (to Kongou) My name is not "Zekamashi"!
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In Shimakaze, Girl of the Whirlwind, she's rude, impatient, and insulting to everyone around her, Asashio in particular.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed in the anime compared to the Shimakaze manga. Though she isn't an angel per se, she's more cheerful and excitable, and doesn't antagonize other shipgirls.
  • Attack Drone: Basically how her Rensohou-Chan turrets behave in the Anime, as exemplified in her sortie with Fubuki and the Kongou Sisters, although they don't go far away from her unlike the usual examples of the trope.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Loves boasting about how fast she is, but if she sinks she'll admit that speed isn't enough.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: In the anime. Shimakaze acts like she's on a permanent sugar high when awake, and has a habit of sleeping in unusual places, but later it's shown that she can outfight much larger and far more numerous Abyssal destroyers on her own.
  • Character Catchphrase: "So slow!"
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Her characterization in the anime. She runs off right before an important sortie, and is playing with one of the Rensohou-Chan turrets like it was a toy plane while being briefed for said sortie.
  • Foil: To Asashio in Shimakaze, Girl of the Whirlwind, where Shimakaze makes fun of Asahio's seriousness
  • Fragile Speedster: Even more so than the other destroyers; true to her real-life basis, Shimakaze has the joint highest evasion stat in the game (tied with Yukikaze, whose evasion stat is for a different reason). Modernized and equipped with a Steam Turbine, she becomes one of the hardest to hit in the game. Also it helps that, at least in terms of shipgirl design, that her turrets aren't attached to her unlike most other shipgirls, allowing for lighter weight and higher mobility. Yet since she is a destroyer (albeit one with one of the highest armor and hit point levels), a single hit (PvP wise) can knock her out.
    • The speedster aspect is emphasized much more in Kancolle Arcade, since she would outrun the rest of the fleet when sailing at flank speed. When she claims that nobody could catch up to her, she is not kidding.
  • Iconic Outfit: A sleeveless sailor top, elbow gloves, a hair ribbon tied like rabbit ears, a microskirt and a very visible thong? That's Shimakaze, alright.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: She is the only Destroyer without any sister ships. In the official 4-koma, she openly writes about it, while in Shimakaze, Girl of the Whirlwind, she acts mean because she feels lonely and seems happy after befriending her foil Asashio.
    • Meta-speaking, Shimakaze was the only ship of her kind available. Cue Amatsukaze (who's the closest thing she has to a predecessor) and you have fanart of an extremely happy Shimakaze.
  • Ms. Fanservice: As Iconic Outfit points out, her outfit is designed to toss in as much fanservice as possible.
  • Necessary Drawback: Due to her speed and her armaments (her historical counterpart was equipped with an extremely powerful steam engine and more torpedo tubes than other destroyers), she also consumes more fuel and ammo than any other IJN destroyer.
  • Power Equals Rarity: She is one of the only two destroyers that starts with a rainbow rarity (the other is Yukikaze) prior to the introduction of event-exclusive ships such as Amatsukaze and the Akizuki-class destroyers, and she is one of the best destroyer stat-wise in a single remodel until more second-remodels for other destroyers come along.
  • Stripperiffic: Her sailor outfit shows off her body and the top of the thong, while her skirt is absolutely tiny that shows off a bunch of her thighs and the bottom of her thong. Her outfit was designed entirely to toss in as much fanservice as physically possible.
  • Wolverine Publicity: When viewing the front page of the DMM website, she's the first ship you'll see. Over time, fans have taken to referring to her as "newbie bait" (she attracts new fans to the game, but they soon find other characters to be their favourites instead of her).

     The Yuugumo-class
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: They are prone to this in their hourly notifications. Both Yuugumo and Naganami drop this in their Kai-2 forms.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: Averted! Coming after the several different uniforms on the Kagerou-class, the Yuugumo-class are instead known for being one of the destroyer class with the least divergences in uniforms. Even with their second remodels, they don't diverge much. The only reason Yuugumo started wearing a different uniform from Naganami and Makigumo is that it's supposed to be their summer uniform, confirmed when Naganami wore it during a summer seasonal event.
  • Rare Random Drop: Previously Summer 2013 event drops, they can now be found in boss nodes, but are still somewhat hard to get. Except for Hayashimo and Kiyoshimo...

"1st ship of the Yuugumo-class, Yuugumo, has arrived. Admiral, I'll be happy to spoil you, you know."

Yuugumo (Evening Cloud) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Yuugumo. She is very doting towards the Admiral and acts as the Team Mom to the rest of her ship class sisters, who look up to her.
  • All Take and No Give: Inverted here, as she really likes spoiling her sisters and the Admiral both.
Yuugumo: Ah, Admiral~, your hat is askance again. You're the commander of such a big fleet, please do look the part. Just how much do I have to look after you... eh? It's fine to keep on doing it? Well, that's . just . lovely
  • Braids of Action: A rather long one.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: She frequently does this.
Yuugumo: Admiral, shall we check the rankings? Let us put in a fun comment!
  • Cool Big Sis: To all her sisters, but specially to Makigumo.
  • Hidden Buxom: Her normal art hides it well, but her size really shows after being medium damaged. Downplayed as it's just around Oboro's size.
  • Holiday Mode: Like Fubuki, she gains a happi coat and hachimaki for Autumn 2016.
  • Mercy Kill: In Makigumo's drowning lines. A reference to how Yuugumo had to scuttle the heavily damaged Makigumo in Savo Island.
  • Not What It Looks Like: In her hourly notifications, she tries to explain to a jealous Makigumo that she is only planning battle strategy with the Admiral and not whatever Makigumo is thinking.
  • Team Mom: Not to Houshou's extent, but she acts very doting towards her sisters and the Admiral.
  • Third-Person Person: In half of her lines.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Obtained her second remodel in July 2018, with stats similar and to the same level to Naganami before her, with a slight focus to ASW.

"Yuugumo-class destroyer, I am Makigumo. Following big sis Yuugumo's example, I'll do my best!"

Makigumo (Cirrus Cloud) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Makigumo. She's a bratty girl who likes to be doted on by Yuugumo and complains when she dosn't get her attention.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Pretty much the cutest out of her class, and her glasses adds to it.
  • Blind Without 'Em: As shown in her hourly notification lines, where she accidentally drops her glasses when she's about to go to the bath.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Towards Yuugumo and Akigumo in fandom, whereas she tries to be more responsible-looking for the Admiral.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Like her sisters.
Makigumo: "Commander-sama, KanColle isn't going anywhere, so let's just sleep~..."
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: For Yuugumo. She even complains when her big sister acts doting towards the Admiral. Her hourly and seasonal lines imply she likes to be doted by Yuugumo and dislikes when she doesn't have her attention.
    • However, her hourly notification lines indicate she doesn't really dislike the Admiral and even tells him/her that If It's You, It's Okay.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Combined with Hair Antennae and odango hair.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Implied in her marriage line that even though she admires Yuugumo, she's fine with the Admiral as well.
Makigumo: "Commander-sama, thank you very much for letting me take my time today. Makigumo too, has to graduate from big sis Yuugumo some time. Is that okay?"
  • Last Request: If she gets sunk.
Makigumo: Big Sis Yuugumo. I can't move anymore, please leave me. My final selfish request...the one to scuttle me, should be you...
  • Little Big Sister: Despite being one of the oldest of the Yuugumo class, she's also the most childish and immature of them. For example, in Hayashimo's hourly lines, she scolds her after Makigumo ate all the caramel and got sick for her trouble.
  • Sweet Tooth: In Hayashimo's hourly lines, she gets a stomach ache from eating too much caramel.
  • Third-Person Person: To emphasize her childish personality.
  • Those Two Guys: With Akigumo, bordering on Vitriolic Best Buds.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Manage to be this despite the Destroyers personified as kids or the fact that she's not the smallest of the Yuugumo-class.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Obtained her second remodel in November 2018, with stats similar and to the same level to Naganami and Yuugumo.

  • Alternate Character Reading: Her name is more commonly read as "Fuu-un", which she lampshades.
  • Foreshadowing: Her second remodel showed up in Akigumo's Crunch Time 2018 CG, being displayed on Akigumo's tablet in increasingly complete versions.
  • I Can Still Fight!: In her sinking line.
Kazagumo: I'm still going forward. I, can still move... still... move...
  • Nonuniform Uniform: She replaces the bow with a necktie!
  • Shown Their Work/Tragic Keepsake: Her hair ribbon's color pattern matches that of Hiryuu's red-white-yellow, referencing the historic Kazagumo's witnessing of Hiryuu's final moment during the Battle of Midway while saving Hiryuu's survivors.

"I'm THE Naganami, Ship No. 4 of the Yuugumo-class destroyers. And off we go. Yeah!"

Naganami (Long Wave) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Naganami. She is a Hot-Blooded Genki Girl who loves battles and a vivid fan of Rear-Admiral Raizou Tanaka.
  • Born Lucky: Not quite born lucky, but her Kai 2 form pushes her luck to a whopping base 30, which can be explained by Rear Admiral Raizō Tanaka's actions during the Battle of Tassafaronga when, while aboard flagship Naganami, he fiercely opposed IJN's command and broke tactical protocol, Batman gambitting his way to victory, sinking one US cruiser and crippling the rest of the opposing fleet.note
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Like her sisters.
Naganami: "Once you've seen the rankings, why don't you change the comments too?"
  • Cool Big Sis: To Takanami and Kishinami.
  • Cute Little Fang: Not so noticeable in her base form. Moreso in her Kai Ni.
  • Hidden Buxom: Just like Ushio, when she's taken damage.
  • Hot-Blooded: Naganami is this to the core. She also gets along with ships who are energetic as well, like Shimakaze and Yukikaze.
Naganami:"All ships, follow me! We're charging in!"
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": She is a Fangirl of Rear-Admiral Raizou Tanaka.
  • Necessary Drawback: Her Kai 2 form requires not only a Blueprint, but also an Action Report, an item which can only effectively be obtained, as of the end of 2017, through a single quest.note
  • Technicolor Eyes: Her official art depicts her as having purple colored eyes... with a distinctive pale yellow tint.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As the last second remodel to be introduced in 2017 and the very first second remodel to be applied to a Yuugumo-class after the class' introduction three years ago, this remodel boosts her firepower to a maximum of 69 and provides her with an Ace Custom Twin Gun Mount Model D Kai 2 which can allow her firepower to further skyrocket to 81 if two of them are equipped. To further add to this, she's also the first destroyer to be able to equip both medium bulges and Fleet Command Facility simultaneously.

Takanami (Tall Wave) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Takanami. She's a shy girl who's inexperienced and naive.
  • Born Unlucky: The original ship was sunk only three months after completion.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Her sinking line implies this.note
Takanami: "Seems I'm getting concentrated fire again... Maybe lighting the enemy ship... was also helpful... Commander..."
  • Shrinking Violet: She's very shy and meek.
  • Verbal Tic: "-kamo" and "-kamodesu". Translates as "maybe" or "perhaps" but, if you are into wordplay, can also be used to mean "duck" (an homophone).

Suzunami (Breaking Waves) is the personification of the Japanese destoryer Suzunami, introduced as the E-4 drop in the Spring 2021 Event.

  • Supreme Chef: Mentions in her hourlies on serving various dishes to the admiral, although most are vegetable based.

"Good job. The 11th of the Yuugumo-class destroyers, Fujinami. Pleased to meet you, Commander."

Fujinami (literally Wisteria Waves) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Fujinami, introduced as the E-2 drop in the Winter 2017 Event. She's a laidback girl who takes battle preparations seriously.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Hamanami calls her "Fu-chan".
  • Character Catchphrase: "For sure!"
  • Cool Big Sis: To Hamanami and Hayanami.
  • Holiday Mode: A yukata for Summer 2017.
  • Kinda Busy Here: A lot of her lines lampshade this, she seems to be constantly busy. However, her Fall 2017 Event lines suggest another trope instead.
Fujinami: What, Admiral? You called? I am for some reason extremely busy seriously preparing a lot of things, you know?
Fujinami: Oh, please! This time, I am really busy! For sure!
Fujinami: That's right! It's sortie prep! Preparation for Operation Sho-go! Wha? Clothes? I said, I'm in middle of preparing! For sure!
  • Shown Their Work: Her Late Autumn 2017 seasonal outfit having her wear Choukai's glasses, a purse matching Choukai's Kai 2 skirt (white with red ties), holding a glasses case that matches Choukai's Kai 2 shirt in her damaged art, and her having a teal-white pouch in her Final Battle 2018 skin is a reference to the historical Fujinami picking up Choukai's survivors and then scuttling Choukai in the Battle off Samar during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In the anime Someday to the Sea, this is referenced by Choukai giving her glasses to Fujinami.

" Big sis, Admiral, thank you! 12th ship of the Yuugumo-class, Hayanami, has arrived! "

Hayanami (Early Waves) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hayanami, introduced as an E-2 drop in the Winter 2019 Event.
  • Born Unlucky: Starting off with a 9 at base, 10 at Kai. This could be attributed to her service lasting not even a year, from her commissioning date of July 31, 1943 to her sinking by a torpedo from USS Harder on June 7, 1944.
  • Big Sister Worship: She admires Fujinami a lot, to the point of trying to emulate her mannerisms and hairstyle.
  • Foreshadowing: Showed up in the 2019 Kancolle calendar with Fujinami and Hamanami.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Even though she adores her big sister Fujinami, she doesn't dislike the Admiral and is very affectionate towards him/her.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: She wears thighhighs instead of a pantyhose like her sisters.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Hayanami has the same ponytail as Fujinami. However, she's more feminine than her laidback sister, she's just trying to emulate Fujinami.

Hamanami (Beach Wave) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hamanami, introduced as a drop in the E-5 Map of the Winter 2018 Event. She's a very timid and gloomy girl who constantly stutters.
  • Braids of Action: A rather short one that's only done at the bottom portion of her hair.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her bangs highlight her Shrinking Violet aspect to the point where you can barely see her right eye, her left eye visible in her damage art.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Invokes this when the Admiral proposes to her in her wedding line.
Hamanami: "W-what is it, Commander? If you don't need anything I'll... Huh... U-ummm, can you repeat that? No way, no way!"
  • Idiot Hair: One that droops down compared to her sisters that are more upright.
  • Porky Pig Pronunciation: She always stutters, sometimes even omitting an entire word or phrase.
  • Shrinking Violet: Stutters quite a lot, due to her historical self being part of the rear guard, so she didn't see much action, even during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Hamanami: "What? It's not, that I need any of that... I'm doing everything normally... I-I'm alright..."
  • Speech Impediment: Her Shrinking Violet package comes with a really nasty stutter.

Okinami (High Seas Wave) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Okinami. She is a humble girl who apologizes a lot and complains about being called bland.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Fujinami calls her "Oki-chin".
  • Apologizes a Lot: Most of her lines really, even her MVP line.
Okinami: "Wha... Ehhhh?! Me? Okinami is number one...? Umm...umm...I, I'm so sorry!"
  • Blind Without 'Em: Apparently she can't see well without her glasses and during battle she's constantly worried about losing them.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Kishinami.
  • Humble Hero: She's very humble and modest, constantly belittling herself and apologizing for troubling the Admiral and her fellow ships.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Is genuinely surprised when the Admiral proposes to her in her wedding line.
Okinami': "Commander, Did you call for Okinami? Did I do something wrong...I...Huh? That's for me?! Wha... I don't... but... I can't... believe it... Ehhhh?!"

"Yo! I'm Asashimo, 16th destroyer of the Yuugumo-class. Please remember. Don't forget about me... OK?"

Asashimo (Morning Frost) is the Japanese personification of the Japanese destroyer Asashimo. A Hot-Blooded girl who prides of being a reliable ship.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Kishinami calls her "Asa-chan".
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: As many other Operation Ten-Go participants, she wears a single left thighhigh over her pantyhose after remodel. With her second remodel, her thighhighs are of different colors instead, the left one still being black-to-dark gray.
  • Hot-Blooded: Like Kiyoshimo.
  • Idiot Hair: A prominent one.
  • Martial Arts Headband: Gains a white one after remodelling.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: As already mentioned, she wears a single left thighhigh of her pantyhose upon remodel.
  • The Reliable One: She's always eager to fight and helping others.
Asashimo: "Ah, you can leave it to me. I'm fine with escorts or even nighttime raids!"
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Befits her Hot Blodded attitude compared to most of her sister.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She obtained her second remodel with the 25 October 2019 update, which comes with a build similar to the rest of the remodeled Yuugumo-class.
  • We Will Meet Again: If she gets sunk.
Asashimo: "Heh, You've come to be dependent on me... Well, fine by me... Kiyoshimo, everyone... we'll meet... again"

"I've... come again, to these seas. Yuugumo-class destroyer, Hayashimo... reporting for duty."

Hayashimo (Early Frost) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hayashimo. She speaks in a calm and monotone voice and constantly giggles in a creepy way.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: After the Admiral marries her.
Hayashimo: "Commander. I think you're working a bit too much too. Umm... Sometimes, together, we should... Uugh... I-it's nothing..."
  • Creepy Child: In fanworks, probably due to her creepy giggle and eye-covering bangs.
  • Dissonant Serenity: She speaks in a calm and monotone voice. Even when she is happy, angry or sinking.
  • Giggling Villain: Averted by a long shot, as she is decidedly not a villain but she has a tendency to quietly giggle in a way that would befit one.
Hayashimo: "You're giving someone like me your blessing? Commander, you're a good person. Fufu...Ufufu."
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Nachi's bad habit has rubbed off onto her, as she drinks though the night in both her hourly lines (Nachi shows up with a bottle of whiskey at 2200) and the Anchorage Counter Bar. She doesn't drink in the 4-koma, however, even though she's a skilled bartender.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Downplayed towards Nachi, as a floatplane from the historical Nachi found the grounded and sunk Hayashimo off of Semirara Island, and delivered Captain Shiraishi's request to rescue his crew to Manila.

"I'm the 18th ship of the Yuugumo-class destroyers, Akishimo. "Harshness" is what best describes the state of the war when I was active. Remember me too. Don't forget me alright?"

Akishimo (Autumn Frost) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Akishimo. She's introduced as a drop in the E-5 Map of the Autumn 2019 Event.
  • Alternate Character Reading: She mentions "harshness" in her library intro, referencing the first two kanji of the idiom for "hasrhness", 秋霜烈日 (shuusouretsujitsu), that she shares with her name.
  • Expository Pronoun: She uses "uchi" when describing herself, given that she had been built at the Fujinagata Shipyards located in Osaka.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Fittingly, she wears a maple leaf and a ginkgo leaf (or decorations styled after maple and ginkgo leaves) on both sides of her temples.
  • The Nicknamer: She nicknames her sisters (and Akebono, whom she shares her fate) with doubled names. Thus, Asa-Asa (Asashimo), Haya-Haya (Hayashimo), Kiyo-Kiyo (Kiyoshimo) and Bono-Bono (Akebono) along with Naga-Naga (Naganami).

"Hello! Last of the Yuugumo-class, it's Kiyoshimo! I'm a bit late, but I'll be in your care!"

Kiyoshimo (Clear Frost) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Kiyoshimo. She loves battleships and wants to become one herself.

     The Akizuki-class
  • Ace Custom: They comes with custom 10cm turrets, specifically designed for shooting down planes.
  • Anti-Air: They are the only destroyer-class designed for anti-air, and as such they're better at it than any other Destroyer class. They got the highest AA stat, and comes with several useful pieces of AA equipment, most notably an AA fire director (in both standard and remodel form). This despite being so specialized that they doesn't really need it.
  • Martial Arts Headband: Each wears one with their DesDiv printed on it.
  • Necessary Drawback: Their AA are significantly higher than the Yamato-class when both are maxed and over 40 points stronger than the second best AA destroyer. They also start with three slots instead of two, with above average firepower and excellent base ASW and durability. For all the perks as stated above though, not only does their AACI have the lowest prioritynote , they consume as much fuel and ammunition as Shimakazenote . Furthermore, their torpedo stat is very low for a destroyer as it was historically sacrificed for air defense specializationnote . Because of that, they are among the weakest destroyers during night battles in the game.
  • Perpetual Poverty: The hourly lines of the first three Akizuki sisters - Akizuki, Teruzuki, Hatsuzuki - so far point to an impoverished upbringing — in the 4koma for example, Akizuki herself is amazed at how the naval base has actual beef meals available, and not just ones from cans. This has some historical basis, as most of the Akizuki-class were deployed close to the end of the war, where resources were scarce and rationing was in full effect. As a result, it's not uncommon to see fanart of the other ships or base personnel treating the Akizuki sisters to rich meals, just out of sheer pity.
  • Robot Buddy: They have their own take of Shimakaze's Rensouhou-chan, the Chou-10cm-hou-chan (Long 10 cm cannon-chan) that they carry on their rigging.
  • Stellar Name: All of the completed ships of the class are named after aspects of the moon and in one case, a Japanese traditional month name. Lampshaded in their introduction in the 4koma, comparing them to the Mutsuki-class.
    • Ironically, they also have the lowest effective night battle firepower in the game. The only destroyers that are even weaker at night battles are the Mutsuki-classnote , which shares their nomenclature of being named after aspects of the moon.

Akizuki (1st)

Artist: Shizuma Yoshinori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akizuki-kc_6615.png

"Akizuki-class anti-air destroyer, first ship, Akizuki. I'm reporting in here. Please leave it to me!"

Akizuki (Autumn Moon) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Akizuki. She is specialized in Anti-Air combat to great effect. Her ship parts include a pair of turrets styled after Shimakaze's Rensouhou-chan, named Chou-10cm-Hou-chan ("Long 10cm Gun-chan"), that are mounted directly to her waist armor instead of moving around freely. She also has four spare barrels strapped to her thigh, reflecting the fact that the real-life 10cm guns' extremely high velocity resulted in short barrel life.
  • Historical In-Joke: A lot of artwork of her pokes fun at how she and Yuubari resemble each other. At the very least, they have nearly identical hairdos. This refers how the class were mistook as mass-produced Yuubari-class by the US Navy. The Akizuki-class were closer in displacement to Yuubari (Akizuki at 3700t and Yuubari at 4100t, full load) than the next heaviest destroyer (Shimakaze at 3300t, full load) as well as the similar design of their funnels.
  • Love Confession: To the Admiral, in one of her hourly lines.
Akizuki: 0200. The moon tonight... the moon sure is beautiful, commander. Eh, commander?note
  • Shout-Out: Many of her lines are references to the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. For example, her Night Attack line references Bright Noah's "That barrage was weak! What the hell are you doing?!?" line, while one of her day battle attack lines has her paraphrase Dozel Zabi's ""As long as I am here, I shall not let you!" line, which was uttered during the Battle of Solomon

"I am Teruzuki, the second ship of Akizuki-class anti-air destroyer! As with Akizuki-neesan, it is a great honor to be in your care!"

Teruzuki (Pale Moon) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Teruzuki. Like Akizuki, she is an anti-air specialist. She has mostly the same uniform and ship parts as her older sister, except that she has drums strapped to her thighs with ammo belts running from them to her Chou-10cm-Hou-chan, her gun director is attached to her ascot instead of a hair ornament and her skirt is black instead of white. One of the Chou-10cm-Hou-chan also has a bullet clenched in its mouth like a cigar.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Implies in her secretary lines that after asking the Admiral if he wants to touch her Anti-Aircraft Fire Director. Take a good look at her art to find where it is located on her person...
"Admiral, are you interested in Anti-Aircraft Fire Director? Would you want to touch Teruzuki's?
Ah, that's not where the Anti-Aircraft Fire Director is. Wait, Chou-10cm-Hou-chan, don't get mad..."
  • Boobs-and-Butt Pose: Her standard pose is turned away while reaching back towards the player with her left arm.
  • Born Unlucky: Her real-life counterpart lasted for less than six months before being sunk. By lowly PT boats, at that. Teruzuki's single-digit luck stat reflects this.
  • Bragging Rights Reward: Unlike Akizuki and Hatsuzuki, which were featured as reward from the second map of Fall 2014 Event and Winter 2016 Event respectively, she is featured as an event reward from the final stage in the Summer 2015 Event, similar to Isokaze a year before her. The operation itself is so difficultnote  that the developers advised the admirals not to stress themselves over clearing the operation itself and extended the event itself for five more days due to the low clear rate when the extension was announced. Though she is much more useful than the recent auxiliary ships such as Akitsushima and Hayasui, some admirals still deem her usefulness were too little to justify the disproportionate difficulty of the operation itself, especially for those who already have Maya Kai Ni or/and Akizuki.
    • Finally becomes available for the first time since her introduction in the Spring 2016 Event. She's not available in subsequent events until 2017, and even then, she is a Rare Random Drop.
  • Cigar Chomper: As mentioned in the description, one of her Chou-10cm-Hou-chan is literally biting a bullet like it's a cigar.

"Akizuki-class anti-air destroyer, I'm Suzutsuki. Everyone... in order to protect everyone no matter what, I... I will do my best. Please take care of me!"

Suzutsuki (Clear Moon) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Suzutsuki, notable for being one of the escorts in Operation Ten-Go. She has a white ascot and very long white glovesnote , and has a gray jacket on top of her standard-issue outfit. Her Chou-10cm-Hou-chan were noted to have a bolt-like eyes. She also has white skirt like Akizuki, but lacks the asymmetric stocking of other Ten-Go participants. Instead she has white pantyhose. Her gun director is clipped to a small side ponytail on the left side of her hair. After remodeling, she replaces the standard Akizuki-class black headband with a white one, furthering her status as an opposite-color version of her younger sister Hatsuzuki.

She was first revealed in the 4th Kancolle Naval Review and became available in the Fall 2017 Event as the reward for the E-4 map.
  • Born Lucky: She had participated in Operation Ten-Go and survived through the operation despite suffering serious damage, and was noted to have reached Sasebo by sailing in reverse after her bow was torn off by aerial torpedoes. Along with a previous instance on convoy escort where submarine torpedoes blew off both her bow and stern, yet her middle section remained afloat for Hatsuzuki to tow back to port. This results in her getting a base luck of 27 (around triple that of her sisters), going up to 37 when remodeled into her Kai form.
  • Call to Agriculture: During the war, she was turned into a reserve ship after sustaining damage from Operation Ten-go due to the lack of resources needed to repair her. During this time, her crew took to farming and fishing to provide food supply. This is referenced in-game by her tending to her vegetable garden in her idle lines. note
  • Foreshadowing: She was mentioned by Akizuki in her 2100 hourly lines before making her debut nearly three years after.
  • In-Series Nickname: Fuyutsuki calls her by the diminutive "Suzu."
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: White pantyhose under a white skirt.

"I'm the fourth ship of the Akizuki-class destroyers, Hatsuzuki. Are you the Admiral? Very well, I'll march on."

Hatsuzuki (New Moon) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Hatsuzuki. Her variation of the Akizuki-class uniform has a black ascot rather than a yellow one, and she wears black pantyhose under her black skirt as well as very long black gloves. Or possibly a black bodysuit, as is the popular interpretation in fanart, though if so it gets thoroughly destroyed in her damaged art. She has an overall rather gloomy appearance, and the eyes of her Chou-10cm-Hou-chan match this. She also has 25mm Triple AA guns mounted below the Chou-10cm-Hou-chan on her split hull ship parts.

She was introduced in the Winter 2016 Event as the E-2 reward.

  • Born Unlucky: Despite outliving Teruzuki for well over a year and a half, her luck remains in the single digits after being remodeled.
  • Historical In-Joke: Her damaged art and above-average firepower note  reflected her actions in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where she stubbornly protected the survivors of Zuikaku and Zuihou. The boat in her art is a possible reference to the 25 survivors.
  • Humble Hero: Despite her gloomy appearance she considers her own accomplishments as one for the fleet, not her own.
Hatsuzuki: "My accomplishments!? I see… But no, that's the accomplishment of the fleet. I don't need my name on it."
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Black pantyhose under a black skirt.
  • When She Smiles: In her damaged art.

Fuyutsuki (Winter Moon) is the personification of the Japanese destroyer Fuyutsuki, introduced as the reward for clearing the E-5 Map of the Winter 2022 Event.
  • Born Lucky: Starts off quite high at 38 before maxing out to 88 at base and 98 at Kai. Other than surviving post-war before her scrapping, she had survived a torpedo to her bow from USS Trepang, and was one of the surviving members of Operation Ten-Go despite being severely damaged.
  • Coat Cape: Much like her sister Suzutsuki, but she wears hers much more loosely, letting it hang by her elbows.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Not her, but the Chou-10cm-hou-chan she carries have their rangefinder eyes shut compared to their counterparts on the other Akizuki sisters. One of their eyes then open in her damaged CG.
  • Foreshadowing: Suzutsuki makes mention of her in her Sinking line (see below), and on her hourlies.
Suzutsuki: So this is... what they mean... by sinking... Right... nee-san, Fuyu...
  • Historical In-Joke: Of the Blink-and-You-Miss-It variety. Her rigging is the only one among her sisters with the ship's internal frame visible. This may stem from one incident where she survived a torpedo hit on her bow from the submarine USS Trepang.
  • In-Series Nickname: Suzutsuki calls her by the diminutive "Fuyu," whereas in the anime Let's Meet at Sea she uses "Ofuyu-san."
  • Shown Their Work: Fuyutsuki mentions on having kept Suzutsuki waiting in several lines, referencing to how both of them became breakwaters off of Kitakyushuu after the war.

     The Matsu-class
Realizing that attrition of the destroyer forces during the late stages of the war, the Matsu-class was the IJN's attempt on creating mass-produced destroyers to serve as convoy escorts as well front-line duties. They're also known as the Type-D Destroyers, referenced by their introduction lines.

  • Floral Theme Naming: They're all named after plants and trees instead of weather phenomenon the other destroyers have used. The Matsu-class are effectively a continuation of the "smaller and cheaper destroyer" idea of the late 1st-class/early 2nd-class IJN destroyers who all used the similar theme naming that came about late war. Matsu's "mixed forest" lines are a reference to this.

"Kept you waiting, huh! I'm the first of the Type D Matsu-class destroyers, Matsu! Don't worry, I can be out in a flash. Just you watch, I'll protect it all! Leave it to me!"

Matsu (Pine tree) is the personificiation of the Japanese destoryer Matsu, introduced in the Rainy-Summer 2020 Event as the E-4 map reward.
  • Born Unlucky: Zigzagged oddly enough. She only sortied once, to escort Convoy 4804. The convoy itself was a success but on its return it was unfortunate enough to be spotted by aircraft from Task Force 58, which proceeded to decimate much of the convoy. The one remaining merchant ship and escorts (including CD-4) attempted to flee into the night while Matsu engaged in a delaying action. While she was succesful in achieving this with her weak armamant, she had no chance of victory, and after a brief chase was sunk by the destroyers USS Cogswell, Ingersoll, and Knapp.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has a pair of green eyes and hair.
  • Foreshadowing: The fairies associated with the 12.7cm Single High-angle Gun Mount Kai 2 and the 12.7cm Twin High-angle Gun Mount Kai 2 introduced in the 29th May 2020 update have the same color of green hair Matsu does.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Wears a pair of dark-grey pantyhose to complement her white skirt.

  • Anachronism Stew: The design of her denim shorts - namely Daisy Dukes - wouldn't appear until about the 1980s.
  • Born Lucky: Maxes out to 88 at base and 108 at Kai. She had survived the Battle of Ormoc Bay in 1944 with moderate damage while escorting convoy TA-7, and that her torpedo was the one to sink USS Cooper during the battle. She had also survived post-war to perform repatriation duties and was later turned over to Great Britain before her scrapping in 1947.
