    Makai Temple Group

Tobirama Senju

Youngest heir of the Senju Clan. Became a Kamikakushi as a result of sleeping on a Boroboroton and it eating him (don't worry, it made sure to spit him out).

  • Adorably Precocious Child: An example that is taken seriously by his elders.
  • Albinos Are Freaks: Tobirama is very isolated since his appearance upsets most of his family. It's even worse with strangers, with at least one priest splashing him with blessed water for an exorcism.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: He is a genius with white hair and red eyes. Most of his cousins are afraid of him due to his appearance
  • Animal Motif: Is frequently compared to a kitten. His cousin Touka also compares him to a rabbit.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: He shows this when analyzing the burning Diplomats House.
  • Badass Bookworm:...It's Tobirama. He loves the library the Temple has and is very capable in combat.
  • Brutal Honesty: He's pretty prone to this.
  • Child Soldiers: He is a trained shinobi and has been for years, despite his young age. The emotional effects are seen most clearly when Uten reveals his adoption, with Tobirama not understanding why he was wanted if there was no threat.
“Why would you even want me! The Tree was sealed in the moon. You don’t need kamikakushi anymore.”
  • Claimed by the Supernatural: Tobirama has a dragon tattoo on his right leg, indicating his being claimed by a daiyoukai.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Has had this effect on some people.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Is very prone to this.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Hates eating turtle.
  • Doom Magnet: Standard for Kamikakushi. Youkai are attracted to them and will harrass them unless another Youkai has a claim or a daiyoukai has adopted them.
  • Eyes Always Averted: Word of God states Tobirama is usually on the receiving end of this with most of his clan. This because partly because of the intimidation factor and partly because of their feud with the Uchiha, meaning red eyes means threat and can trigger flashbacks.
  • Friendly Enemy: Sometimes seems to have this relationship with Izuna. While they're willing to fight and probably willing to kill each other, Izuna still steps in when Tobirama is quarreling with the Hyuuga and Tobirama gives Izuna a birthday gift.
  • I Am What I Am: The society he lives in has a negative view of people with red eyes and white hair. However, he doesn't display any shame of how he looks, regardless of the treatment he gets.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Tobirama has a dragon tatto on his leg. And it is indicated that the red facial markings his adult canon self has are this as well.
  • Mystical White Hair: Is a white haired Kamikakushi undergoing Sage Training
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Unfortunately, Tobirama lives in an era when red eyes and white hair is viewed negatively. Word of God has stated that it is part of the reason several of his cousins are scared of him. It also means when he goes to temples, he usually gets splashed with holy water.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has experienced this a few times. Such as when he found out his bed was alive, when he came face-to-face with an omukade and when he found out it wasn't a nekomata he had been sensing when with Natsuru.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Is the Blue to Izuna's Red. Even though they don't get along and fully expect one to kill the other someday.
  • Stoic Woobie: He usually gets negative reception when he encounters civilians due to his appearance. His appearance makes his clan wary of him and most can't even make eye contact, meaning he is a bit of a outcast with the Senju. Both his father and brother have "my way or the highway" mindsets and he tends to get caught in the middle. Butsuma, while not abusive, is emotionally distant. Two little brothers dead. He has been conditioned to have a constant need to be useful and struggles to understand someone wanting him when they don't need him. Yet he very rarely if ever complains.
  • Tranquil Fury: After Lord Inoue tries to have him killed after completing a job, Tobirama doesn't shout at him once. But he does make his displeasure known.

Otsuno

A Sage who resides in a Temple within Makai. He trains Tobirama in the Sage Arts, so Tobirama will be able to defend himself from Youkai.

  • Badass Preacher: If you need proof he's this, check out his story of how his temple wound up in Makai. It involves him punching a volcano. There's also the fact he's spent four centuries living in Maki, which is full of demons, who eat human chakra.
  • Brutal Honesty: Shows this sometimes. Such as when he is describing how Botan eats people
  • Living Legend: Word of God confirms he is in the legends of the Sages. He even has a shelf in his library for books about him - that he laughs over.
  • The Mentor: Has this role towards Tobirama.
  • Methuselah Syndrome: is centuries old and still leading an active life.
  • Older Than They Look / Really 700 Years Old: Is about five hundred years old.
  • Parental Substitute: Is this to Tobirama.
  • Warrior Monk: A priest who can kick ass.

Botan

The Boroboroton responsible for Tobirama becoming a Kamikakushi.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: He is a Boroboroton, a type of tsukumogami formed from a futon.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Botan is not human and does not think the way humans do. When Butsuma says something that upsets Tobirama, he thinks eating him is a good idea.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Does not approve of Tobirama sleeping other beds. He ripped up Tobirama's so he would have to either sleep on Botan or the floor. Botan is more comfortable.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: Botan is still a baby Youkai, but Otsuno states he is very strong and able to keep several Youkai away from Tobirama by being present.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Before encountering Tobirama, he ate guests at the inn he resided in. He also suggests eating Butsuma.
  • Meaningful Name: Named because he likes peonies.
  • Telepathy: Communicates by projecting images.

Churippu

A ichiren-bozu that Tobirama finds in a patch of tulips.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: She is an ichiren-bozu, a type of tsukumogami formed from a string of prayer beads.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: She is not human and does not think the way humans do. When Butsuma says something that upsets Tobirama, she wants to torment him into a state of maniac paranoia, not seeing anything a problem with compromising the mental state of a shinobi in a position of power.
  • Killer Rabbit: Is very formidable, despite looking harmless.
  • Meaningful Name: Named because she was found in tulips.
  • Telepathy: Communicates by projecting images.

Izuna

A kudagitsune that takes up residence in the temple after a guest was caught trying to smuggle him in. Was referred to as Izuna as it was easier to say than kudagitsune and accepted it as it's name.

    Senju Clan

Butsuma Senju

Head of the Senju Clan and father of Hashirama and Tobirama.

  • Family Man: Toyed with. His first priority is the well-being of his clan which is his family. Everything else takes second place. Including being a father.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Played with. He does not disapprove of Hashirama's dreams of peace but he does view it a foolish.
  • Like Father, Like Son: The discussion at the end of chapter 12 implies that while several fanfics portray Hashirama as viewing Tobirama as very much like their father, Butsuma has more in common with his eldest, he’s just more cynical and realistic.
  • My Way or the Highway: Word of God says he is prone to this attitude, but it isn't usually an issue since he is the Clan Head.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Outlived his two youngest sons.
  • Parental Neglect: While he is not an abusive parent, there are indications of this. So far, his interactions with Tobirama has consisted of either him assigning Tobirama a task or Tobirama seeking him out. Word of God confirmed that he is an emotionally distant parent.
his father hadn’t much attention to spare for his children, and even less use for wasted time.
  • Parents as People: He is portrayed better here than in other works. However, it is clear he is not the best parent and being a father isn't his most important priority.
  • Strawman Has a Point: When Tobirama questions why the feud with the Uchiha started, he states it doesn't matter since knowing what erase the tragedies that have happened between the Clans since then. He also points out that a single person alone cannot change the world.

Hashirama Senju

The Eldest Heir to the Senju Clan and Tobirama's older brother

  • Big Brother Instinct: His relationship with Tobirama is strained since the River Incident. Still, Hashirama immediately panics when the possibility of something bad happening to his brother is raised.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Hashirama is well aware that crops produced with the mokuton has no nutritional value but happily gives it to the samurai as their tithe.
  • Like Father, Like Son: It is implied that Hashirama takes after his father and Word of God states the reason they clash so much is because these similarities means they rub each other the wrong way when their differences collide. In fact, Word of God says "Hashirama is kind of like Butsuma’s cheery, kinder, bishounen clone".
  • My Way or the Highway: Word of God states he gets this from his father which is part of the reason they clash so much.

Akahiko Senju

A Samurai who married into the Senju Clan and Grandfather of Touka.

  • Cool Old Guy: Tobirama sees him as this.
  • The Mentor: Was Tobirama's first kenjutsu teacher.
  • Samurai: Apparently one who was well known give that Izuna recognizes his style.

Osafumi Uchiha

A Uchiha ghost Tobirama meets while at Lord Inoue's estate. He had been killed by Inoue's men after completing a mission for him and saved Tobirama from having the same fate.

  • Friendly Ghost: He may be a ghost but he's pretty friendly.
  • Momma's Boy: Implied to be this, since he lives in the Mu-onna enclave because it's where his mother lives.
  • Older Than They Look: He looks about fourteen, the age he was when he was killed. He is actually about twenty years old, given that he's been dead for six years.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: He's a ghost due to no receiving a proper burial.
  • Teleportation Rescue: He saves Tobirama by pulling him into a well then transporting him to the Makai realm. Would have been more effective if he had been aware he wasn't limited to liminal spaces.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: The reason he helps Tobirama.
    "I don’t pick on children.”

Kikuyu Uchiha

A mu-onna and Osafumi's mother.

  • Broken Bird: She is puzzled by Osafumi reassuring he would always return to her, she spaces out at times, she certainly appears to be one, especially since her becoming an mu-onna depends on her losing a child to war or famine, meaning she outlived at least one of her children.
  • Mama Bear: She has no problem blocking the door and snarling at another mu-onna when she thinks the other is after Osafumi.

Uten

A priest Tobirama encounters when he was searching for a home for Churripu. However, the next day revealed that the shrine he was in had burnt down years ago, showing that he was not a human. It has been revealed he is actually a Dragon God, specifically Kuraokami, the God of Otsuno's temple.

  • What the Hell, Hero?: One of their Elders suborning his priest's oath and adopting a kamikakushi without asking first was very humiliating for the Dragon Clan.

Natsuru

A Crane Woman who Tobirama meets.

  • Blue-and-Orange Morality:While she may have been born human, she has long since stopped being one. The first thing she asks Tobirama is if he wants to keep his hair and later she shoves him into a meeting with a youkai that eats people.
  • Doom Magnet:Word of God states that she was the last Kamikakushi before Tobirama. Otsuno recalls that she was harassed every day whenever she left her shelter before being claimed. This is what tips him to the fact another powerful Youkai has taken interest in Tobirama.

The daughters of Lord Inoue and a pair of Futakuchi-onna. They think Tobirama is adorable.

  • Cuteness Proximity: Their reaction to Tobirama.
  • The Glomp: Likes to do this to Tobi
  • The Ingenue: Their father's household seems to view them as this, one Guard disliking them having anything to do with a shinobi.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Implied to be this since the gardeners hide food for them to eat.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: The clothes they are wearing when Tobirama meets them at the temple are very fancy, with Tobirama noting that "somewhere, a Daimyo’s wife is choking on her jealousy"
  • Pink Means Feminine: Dressed in all pink when Tobirama meets them.
  • Prehensile Hair: They are Futakuchi-onna. Their hair is capable of moving on it's own.

These are the Daimyo's personal spies. Unlike the Shinobi Clans, they focus on utilizing stealth and secrecy.

  • Faceless Goons: Intentionally invoked. The masses can only identify an Oniwaban when they are wearing their mask and uniform.
  • Femme Fatalons: The one we see in Sasaki's office wears clawed gloves.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Averted. Unlike the Shinobi Clans, they focus on utilizing stealth and secrecy.

However, when the Onibawan have children of their own, these eventually develops into Bloodline, which is not allowed in the Daimyo's court. So the new bloodline is released from service. However, unlike most examples of these trope, they aren't killed. Word of God stated in this world, the Nara began from an Oniwaban bloodline and their vassalage was gifted to the Akimichi by the Daimyo of the time as a show of trust and a reward to the Nara for their dedicated service several generations before the story starts.
