Jedi

    Hoth

Lord Hoth (Rohlan)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lord_hoth_egttf.jpg

Species: Human

Homeworld: Kaal

Appears in: Darth Bane

  • And I Must Scream: For well over a thousand years, he, and every Sith and Jedi spirit with him, was kept in constant agony.
  • The Determinator: The man will not stop until he's eradicated the Sith from the face of the galaxy, with or without the council's permission.
  • Headbutting Heroes: He and Farfalla might have wanted to defeat the Sith, but they constantly clashed with each other.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He chose to lead a small contingent of Jedi into the caves of Ruusan, knowing full well that Lord Kaan would have something waiting for them.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His name was actually Rohlan, but everyone knew him as Lord Hoth due to achieving a major victory on the ice planet.
  • Lords Who Actually Do Something: That's right, he's a Jedi Lord to you, peasant. During the Republic Dark Age, influential Jedi Masters were actually allowed permanent residence in ornate castles on planets that were otherwise defenceless to Sith invasions, and could even form dynasties. Case in point, Hoth comes from a long line of esteemed Jedi Lords who rule over the Yushan sector.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Recruited Force-sensitive children into the Army of Light to keep them out of the hands of the Brotherhood of Darkness.

    Valenthyne Farfalla

Lord Valenthyne Farfalla

Species: Bothan (1/2)

Appears in: Darth Bane | Jedi vs. Sith

  • Agent Peacock: Perhaps the most flamboyant, fashion-conscious Jedi ever. The traditional Jedi values of modesty and antimaterialism clearly got lost on him somewhere along the line.
  • Bling of War: In contrast to the minimalist dress code of most Clone Wars Jedi, and even most Jedi of his own era, Valenthyne wears diamond-encrusted golden armour into battle and generally looks immaculate at all times. He even has a gold lightsaber!
  • Blue Blood: Inherited his "Jedi Lord" title from his nobleman father.
  • Character Death: He and a party of Jedi are killed at the end of Rule of Two, having fought Bane.
  • The Charmer: Compared to Hoth's gruffness, Farfalla is much attuned to the fine art of diplomacy.
  • Fauns and Satyrs: Being a rare Bothan hybrid, he has the look of one.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Although the human part can only be assumed, he is definitely half-Bothan. From the waist up, he looks completely human, with his bestial Bothan genes only manifesting in his furry legs and tail.
  • I Gave My Word: Vowed to Hoth to eradicate the Sith, which he uses as justification to go to Tython hunting after Zannah.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Rushing off to Typhon without telling the Council as a whole may not have been the smartest idea of all.
  • Lords Who Actually Do Something: Like Hoth, Farfalla is a Jedi Lord as well as a Jedi Master, meaning that he owns land on at least one world.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's significantly more level-headed and approachable than Lord Hoth.
  • You Are in Command Now: Became the leader of the remnants of the Army of Light and what was left of the Jedi after the death of Lord Hoth.

    Kiel Charny

Kiel Charny

Species: Human

Appears in: Darth Bane | Jedi vs. Sith

Kiel Charny was a Human male, who served as a Jedi General for the Galactic Republic during the New Sith Wars. He was murdered by the Jedi initiate Darovit, who subsequently defected to the Brotherhood of Darkness.

  • Ideal Hero: Kiel is a respected and accomplished warrior who lacks the irritability of Lord Hoth or the extravagance of Farfalla. He is kind and patient with Spoiled Brat recruit Tomcat while believing that he does have real potential. He also personally tries to help both wounded subordinates and enemies in the aftermath of a battle.

    Johun Othone
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/johun_othone.jpg

  • Ascended Extra: From a mention in a sourcebook for the Dark Forces games to a main character in Rule of Two.
  • The Hero Dies: He's the closest thing Rule of Two has to a hero, and he dies at the climax in the Duel on Tython.
  • Older and Wiser: Starts off as a padawan, but after the time skip in Rule of Two he's become a full-fledged knight.
  • Praetorian Guard: Spends the time skip in Rule of Two serving as Chancellor Valorum's bodyguard.

New Sith Empire

    Sith

Darth Ruin (Phanius)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darthruin_egf.jpg

Species: Umbaran

  • Bad Boss: Ruin was not above murdering underlings on mad whims, which eventually prompted them to turn on him.
  • Bald of Evil: Being Umbaran, he had no hair on his head.
  • Fallen Hero: He started off as a Jedi, and not a particularly nice one. His fall wasn't particularly far. Amazingly, the Jedi never caught on to the fact.
  • It's All About Me: To the fullest extent, he was solipsistic (meaning he didn't really think other beings actually existed).
  • Lean and Mean: As an Umbaran, he was taller and thinner than a human, and... well, Sith.
  • Retcon: George Lucas intended him to be the first Sith, but due to retcons and suchlike this didn't work with the EU timeline, with several Sith predating him by thousands of years. So he's merely the first of the New Sith, the order that eventually led to Bane himself. So he's only the first Sith from a certain point of view.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His reign might have been short, but it's thanks to him starting the New Sith Wars that would eventually lead to the creation of the Rule of Two and the eventual fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire.

The Dark Underlord

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darkunderlordcropped.jpg
  • Duel to the Death: Fought and lost one against Jedi Master Murrtaggh.
  • Enemy Mine: He was enough of a threat that a Jedi Master was willing to ally with the Mandalorians to deal with him.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Who or what was he? Nobody knows. In-universe speculation abounded that he might've been Xendor, one of the first fallen Jedi. But he might not've been.
  • Villainous Legacy: Even after his death, his followers the Black Knights reformed several centuries later until they were dealt with by a newly promoted Padawan Yoda.

Darth Rivan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darthriv.jpg
  • The Corrupter: Rivan was so evil, his fortress managed to make a Padawan fall to the Dark Side in minutes of stepping foot in it, centuries after his death.
  • One-Steve Limit: Just narrowly squeaks by it. Yes, he did base his name on Revan, but one little mistake.

Belia Darzu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beliadarzu.jpg

Species: Shi'ido

  • Emperor Scientist: Has a massive castle on Tython, which is filled with her leftover experiments, even several hundred years after her death. Also, she was a powerful Dark Side wielder.
  • The Ghost: She's mentioned, and her holocron helps Bane figure out holocrons in Rule of Two, but she never puts in an actual appearance in the novel.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: She was a shapeshifting Shi'ido but her default form was a human woman.
  • Succession Crisis: Her death meant the Sith were left without a Dark Lord, leading to several more centuries of infighting between the Sith.

Brotherhood of Darkness

    Members

Lord Skere Kaan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lord_kaan_egf.jpg

Species: Human

Homeworld: Coruscant

  • And I Must Scream: As with everyone else caught in the Thought Bomb, what little of Kaan's mind is stuck in unimaginable torment for a thousand years.
  • Beard of Evil: Has a goatee and is evil like any Sith.
  • Fallen Hero: Yet another Jedi turned bad.
  • Irony: Despite his mastery of mind tricks, Kaan himself was weak willed and preached Rule by the Strong to hide his own weakness.
  • Jedi Mind Trick: Unsurprisingly for a fallen Jedi, Kaan was very good at using mind tricks to keep his subordinates under his control. Only Bane and Kopecz were strong-willed enough to resist it.
  • Klingon Promotion: Seized control of the battered remnants of the New Sith, under the guise of eliminating them. By the time the Jedi caught on, it was a little too late.
  • Sanity Slippage: He was driven mad by the Dark Side due to his desperation at his inability to beat the Jedi. This meant he was easily manipulated by Bane to use the Thought Bomb.
  • Smug Snake: The guy was really confident in his abilities. Just another reason Bane hated him.
  • Taking You with Me: At Darth Bane's suggestion, he and the remaining members of the Brotherhood combined their powers to create a Thought Bomb, which killed both the New Sith and a hundred Jedi, including Lord Hoth, leaving what was left of their consciousness trapped in torment for a thousand years.
  • A Villain Named Khan: Kaan but close enough.

Githany

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/githany_egf.jpg

Species: Human

  • Dark Action Girl: Due to being a member of the Sith.
  • Fallen Hero: She was a Jedi before becoming a Sith.
  • In-Series Nickname: Githa.
  • Pet the Dog: Murderous Sith or not, Githany tries takes her new apprentice Davorit with her while fleeing from the Thought Bomb that will kill every nearby Force-user. She does ultimately leave him behind, but only after waiting for longer than is safe, and only after he has repeatedly ignored her warning that they have no time to waste.

Kopecz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kopeczhs.jpg

Species: Twi'lek

Homeworld: Ryloth

  • Commander Contrarian: Kopecz was often the first voice of dissent against Kaan, stirring the other Sith against him on issues such as the prolonged battle for control of Ruusan. However, Kaan was always able to sway Kopecz into siding with him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Nothing good came from him recruiting Bane.

Kaox Krul

Darovit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darovit_ruusan.jpg
Appears in: Darth Bane, Jedi vs. Sith

  • Go Mad from the Revelation: He stumbled on the aftermath of the Thought Bomb, which drove him temporarily mad.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He remained convinced Zannah, who talked openly about how she was a Sith and had killed people and was planning on staying a Sith, could be talked around to redemption. In any other Star Wars story, he might've succeeded.
  • Robbing the Dead: After the Jedi scout that found them sacrifices himself to let Darovit and his sister reach the Army of Light, Darovit makes sure to go back and take his lightsaber. To make things worse, the scout is still alive, but Darovit ignores his comment about robbing the dead not being very jedi-like.
  • The Scapegoat: Zannah uses her Sith powers to fry his brain, before the Jedi show up looking for a Sith lord. When they found a crazy guy with one hand near a dismembered corpse, they cut him down and assumed that was that for the Sith, allowing Zannah and Bane to go on their merry way.
  • Spoiled Brat: Though he grew up in poverty, he ended up like this anyway. He had fully bought into the image of the glorious Army of Light fighting evil on the battlefield of justice. Seeing the realities of war broke that illusion, but he stubbornly cling to it by acting as if menial tasks like pulling the dining cart were beneath the dignity of a Jedi.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: His belief in Zannah's capacity for redemption lets the Sith Rule of Two continue on.
