Hestia Familia

The main familia that the story focuses on. The Hestia Familia is the familia started by the goddess of the hearth, Hestia, and her first child, Bell. Although they start off on the bottom rung of Orario's adventurers, Bell's meteoric rise soon propels them into the spotlight, garnering fame, allies, and enemies along the way.

  • Action Girl: Mikoto comes off as this, being the only female member who actually fights instead of being support. the rest were simply Support Party Members. By Volume 19, Ryuu finally joins the familia, marking the first time an adventurer had a level higher than a Captain.
  • Badass Crew: As if Bell single-handedly defeated the Minotaur wasn't great enough, how about a handful of them single-handedly defeated 3 of the biggest Familias (the Apollo, Ishtar, and Freya Familias) in the story.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Both Hestia and Lili are vying for Bell's feelings. Fortunately, Mikoto and Haruhime didn't join in the fun.
  • Five-Man Band: The Hestia Familia members form this quite neatly. We have Bell as The Leader as the official familia captain who the others respect, Lili as The Lancer who is both a foil to Bell and is the most likely of taking charge in his absence, Welf as The Smart Guy being a skilled blacksmith who crafts their equipment, Mikoto as The Big Gal who is a shinobi who contributes the most raw power aside from Bell, and Haruhime as The Heart who is the least combat capable but makes up for it by being compassionate and caring. note
  • Guest-Star Party Member:
    • Ryu often teams up with Hestia familia, whether by happenstance or on purpose. She was a great help in the battle against the Black Goliath, managed to take out a significant portion of the Apollo familia, and she and Bell fought side by side against the Juggernaut. She finally joins the familia as an official member in Volume 19.
    • Ouka and Chigusa, Mikoto’s friends from the Takemikazuchi familia, also team up with them frequently, as do Daphne and Cassandra of the Miach familia and Aisha of the Hermes familia.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: So far we had a dorky kid who can do anything except talking to women, a Goddess who is a drunk and had a problem recruiting adventurers, a supporter who carries a lot of physical and emotional weight, a Cool Big Bro who is a Blacksmith that is in love with a Goddess despite her deformities, a Swordswoman with an obsession towards baths, a Hooker with a Heart of Gold who can't get any customers, and a Ninja Maid with a Dark and Troubled Past. What a crew.
  • True Companions: In spite of their differences, they still care about each other.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Inverted example. As of right now, Bell and Welf are the only boys of the Hestia Familia, with the other members being all girls.

    Bell Cranel

Bell Cranel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bell_zenshin.png
Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (JP), Bryson Baugus (English) Foreign VAs

The main protagonist of the series.

Starting off as a rookie adventurer, Bell's life is put at risk after coming across a high-level Minotaur. However, he is saved by the seasoned adventurer Ais Wallenstein and ends up developing a crush on her. After the event, Bell ends up acquiring a rare skill, Liaris Freese, that allows for him to accelerate his growth so long as it corresponds with his strong feelings towards achieving something... such as catching up to Ais.

  • Above the Influence: Despite what his grandfather told him to do, he doesn't seem to like taking advantage of women. Unfortunately, Hermes tricks him into doing it by claiming he wanted to talk to Bell privately, only to lead him to a spot where they could see the women's bath before inadvertently making Bell fall into the bath as well. Luckily for him, a number of them (especially Hestia) didn't mind. As for the others, especially Lefiya... not so much.
  • Accidental Pervert:
    • Bell has an odd habit of accidentally getting into some compromising situations, such as rolling straight into Ais' butt, though it's probably a given due to how many women are around him. Usually due to Hermes' schemes.
    • This saves him in Volume 7, where his accidental wandering into Haruhime's room and being mistaken for a client allows him to hide from his pursuers.
  • Albinos Are Freaks: Inverted. Bell's snow-white hair and red eyes remind others of the cute, but dangerous almiraj (a rabbit with a horn on its head) monsters that inhabit the middle floors of the dungeon — this adds to his "pure" and "rabbit-like" appearance that others find endearing and cute, while Hestia, who is head over heels for him, considers them part of his "cool looks". Potentially subverted if one follows the Astraea Record event of Memoria Freese, when Bell's maternal aunt Alfia indicates Bell's white hair and red eyes were inherited through his mother and father respectively. This may imply his appearance may not be due to the albinism as we know it.
  • All-Loving Hero: If he's able, he will come to the aid of anyone under monster threat, even those who have betrayed, harmed, or attempted to kill him and those he cares about. In fact, he is so all-loving that he is willing to alienate the entirety of Orario and jeopardize his reputation to save the sentient monster Wiene.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Downplayed. He may not be willing to cross certain lines such as deliberately peeking on naked women, but he certainly doesn't mind being subjected to Marshmallow Hell from a goddess like Demeter.
  • Almighty Janitor: Downplayed. He takes on Asterius, a Black Rhinos Xenos rated as a Level 7 threat, on his own even while he's a Level 3 (though he had the stats of a Level 4 and Asterius was at death's door thanks to Ais). He loses, but the fact that he's even alive at all is amazing (but this is partially due to Asterius' sense of honor and desire for an even greater rematch once they're both stronger).
  • Amazon Chaser: He chases after the Sword Princess Ais to one day be on the same level as her.
  • Animal Motifs: Bell often gets compared to a White Bunny—makes sense due to his albinism and his speed.based style of combat. Unfortunately for Bell, it makes it easy for him to be the butt of certain rabbit-related jokes, such as in the novels, when Lily disguised herself as a wolf-person, at least one onlooker said the "wolf" could eat the "rabbit" as emergency provisions.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Does this often, usually when he ends up accidentally doing something perverted to women.
  • Badass Adorable: Frequently called cute because of his rabbit-like appearance.
  • Bad Liar: Bell Cranel Cannot Keep a Secret, but this is less because he blabs his mouth and more because he's a terrible liar.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Bell joins Hestia Familia because no one else would take him in, while she approached him and offered him the opportunity.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A genuine Nice Guy for the most part, but will get angry if someone he cares about gets hurt.
  • BFS: He occasionally wields one, especially when his knives aren't enough for some reason, most prominently example being his fight with the Minoutaur of the 9th floor.
    • In an event of Memoria Freese the Hestia Knife gets a Greatsword variant crafted to help him fight against the current threat. It gets destroyed by the end.
  • Black Swords Are Better: The Hestia Knife is a special black knife that only works for him. As Bell grows in power, so will it until they both reach the pinnacle of Orario. Naturally, it's all black.
  • Book Dumb: He admits that he doesn't read many books, other than hero stories.
  • Born Lucky: He's an extremely fortunate person, having been saved by Ais just as she was coming back up from an expedition and obtaining a ridiculously powerful and unheard of growth skill. This is further exemplified by the "Luck" skill he obtained after killing the Minotaur and reaching Level 2, which increases the chance of good things happening to him that might even help his friends. For instance, while visiting a casino for the first time, he manages to turn a mere three chips into 10,800 chips (a difference of 3,600 times) by repeatedly betting on a single number on roulette. note  At first, Bell tries to pass this off as Beginner's Luck, but the results are increasingly obvious to him as he continues winning. And that's just from the effects of the fresh Luck skill at I rank. By the time he reaches Level 4, Luck's rank had increased to F, a whole three ranks higher. Also note that Luck is classified as a Development Ability, which are notoriously hard to level up, to the point even most veterans with decades-long careers only reach rank E.
Bell: Haha... I was just lucky. [gets the roulette on the mark for the second time] Ahaha it's just luck. [gets another one perfectly] I was lucky again... [on the mark again] Luc... ky?! [on the mark one more time, giving him a mountain of chips as he stares on speechless]
    Onlookers: How lucky is he?!
  • Born Unlucky: Bell has developed a habit of running into and fighting monsters that have greatly surpassed the limits of their own species abilities. From a Red Minotaur personality trained by Orario’s strongest Adventurer to a Juggernaut that ate different monsters of the 37th Floor in an attempt to kill him specifically after he severely weakened it in their second battle.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Inverted. Bell is willing to act perverted only toward Ais, it led to a Good Angel, Bad Angel moment in the third volume. Lampshade by Hestia after the events of volume 5.
  • Casting Gag: Bell is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka who is typecast as Stock Light Novel Heroes and Harem Genre protagonists. Most notably Kirito from Sword Art Online.
  • The Champion: Starting from Volume 1, he has sworn himself to Ais. Can't actually act on that, though. Even if he were strong enough, he would be Bodyguarding a Badass.
  • Changing Yourself for Love: Bell starts out as a Harem Seeker in search of the Rescue Romance his grandpa always told him about. After he's rescued from certain death by the devastatingly beautiful and incredibly powerful adventurer Ais Wallenstein, Bell is instantly smitten with her and vows to become strong enough to stand beside her one day. His desire to catch up to her is so strong that he gets a unique Meta Power Up that rapidly increases the rate at which his stats grow and lets him break the usual stat caps so long as his feelings for her persist. Because of this, he completely drops his Harem Seeker ways and dreams of becoming a hero to earn her affection.
  • Charged Attack: Bell gets the skill Argonaut after reaching Level 2, allowing him to charge up his next physical or magical attack with a potentially enormous amount of extra power. However, he must stand still while using it, and it iniatially takes a full three minutes (later it increases to four when he hits Level 4, and to five when he becomes Level 5) to reach its maximum power, an eternity on the battlefield. Even after he becomes able to charge it while moving, he still will lose the charge if he is hit. But even a partially charged attack can gravely injure an opponent one level above him, while a fully-charged Argonaut attack is that can fell even a Floor Boss several levels above his own in a single hit.
  • Chick Magnet:
    • He has girls falling for him all around him thanks to his striking Bishōnen looks, his sweet, mousy personality, and his reckless acts of heroism. To date, Hestia, Lili, Haruhime, Aisha, and Eina have demonstrated clear romantic interest in him, while Ais and Tione want to get to know him better.
    • It works to his detriment when he gets lost in the Pleasure District while tailing Mikoto and Chigusa, as he's considered so handsome that the girls of the Ishtar Familia all want a piece of him, nearly tearing him limb from limb in a Lover Tug of War and forcing him to flee for his life.
    • In Volume 16, he's coerced by Hedin Selland of the Freya Familia into undergoing brutal Training from Hell in order to make him a better date for Syr. This involves forcing him to change his posture, mannerisms, and speech patterns while being forced to rescue low-level female adventurers from pass parades until he can make them swoon every time. Failure to do so would result in a beating that would leave Bell vomiting and twitching on the floor.
    • Even the Xenos find themselves interested in him, with Wiene being clearly in love with him while Rei demonstrates serious interest. The gods even considered changing his alias to "All Okay" as they mistakenly believed that Bell has a monster fetish.
  • The Chosen One:
    • He comes under the attention of Freya who becomes obsessed with making him stronger and nurturing him to his full potential.
    • Similarly, Hermes has decided to try and make Bell "the last hero" destined to defeat the One-Eyed Black Dragon that demolished the Zeus and Hera Familia.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He goes out of his way to help Lili, even after she betrays him and leaves him for dead. In general, if he can help someone, he will, even if it comes at a cost to himself. Hestia lampshades this, complaining that gods of hearth and home (i.e. herself) are less generous than he is. His desire to help others is so profound that he puts his reputation, livelihood, and life on the line to protect Wiene and the Xenos with full knowledge that it would make him an enemy of adventurers everywhere.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: He doesn't realize that there are girls falling for him left and right in his single-minded pursuit of Ais.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture:
    • He's the victim of this in Memoria Freese's Date A Live crossover, he's subjected to the receiving end of one by a fake Kaguya Yamai, which results in his bones being broken and his flesh getting ripped in front of his friends, fortunately Shido came to the rescue.
    • In volume 17, in an attempt to make him hers, Freya kidnaps him and has the executives of her familia subject Bell to extremely harsh training. He ends up being constantly pushed to the brink of death and then brought back just to be beaten again everyday, all in an attempt to psychologically break him.
  • Commonality Connection: Bell is attached to Lili because he saw how lonely she was, much like him before Hestia invited him to join her familia.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: His only family was his grandfather who then died half a month before the start of the series.
  • Covert Pervert: While he's a nice guy, his goal at first was to get a harem. While he's grown out of this, he still reacts positively to marshmallow hells. In the manga, he also wants to play with Liliruca's tail, fully aware of her Fantastic Arousal concerning her ears.
  • The Cutie: Most older characters comment on his harmless huggableness the first time they see him, especially the goddesses that interrupt his "date" with Hestia.
  • Defensive Feint Trap: In the War Game, Bell takes advantage of when Hyacinthos is, in order to lure The Bully into launching a reckless attack. It works like a charm.
  • Determinator: Wants to become a high-level adventurer as soon as possible in order to catch up to Ais. In episode 11, despite his massive injuries, he singlehandedly carries an unconscious Lili and Welf to the 18th floor of the dungeon, barely getting past a boss that was in the process of respawning while also being physically exhausted.
  • Dismemberment Is Cheap: Subverted. Bell's arm gets cut off in Volume 13, but he manages to get it reattached thanks to Marie's Mermaid Blood. In Volume 14, his arm is gravely damaged as he constantly used throughout the volume to block attacks. While he covered it with a special item that was extremely resilient, the shockwaves still hurt him. By the epilogue, it was only salvable due to extensive treatments done by the best medical faction and paid for by Ouranos and Hermes. But Hestia notes that the costs of this treatment had eight zeroes in front of it and was considered a special, emergency case, as Naza, another adventurer who lost an arm, got a prosthetic instead. In fact, it is noted that if parts of his arm had been lost, the reconstruction wouldn't have been possible.
  • Divine Parentage: Downplayed. In episode 13, Hermes mentions that Bell is "Zeus's grandson" as he watches Bell defeat the Black Goliath, implying that Bell's grandfather was actually one of the most prominent deities in their world. In the light novels, however, it was noted that Zeus is only his adopted grandfather, and he is as much a human as everyone else. This does explain why he was raised to be a Harem Seeker though, since Zeus is infamous for sleeping with everybody.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Gets dragged into the pleasure quarters against his will, gets grabbed by Aisha and dragged into Ishtar's HQ, spends the whole night fleeing from them, and when he manages to escape and get home, he gets yelled at and punished by Hestia, who pointedly refuses to listen to anyone else speaking on his behalf and berates him so strongly he's too shaken to speak on his own behalf.
  • Dramatic Irony: Played for Laughs. Bell went into the Dungeon to make a harem only to fall for Ais and give up on it. Yet in doing so he gained a harem and is completely oblivious to it.
  • Dual Wielding: Bell eventually becomes a dual-wielder after obtaining a second weapon to coincide with the normal dagger he started off with.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: He has the habit of jumping in and endangering himself to protect girls who are total strangers to him.
  • Emotional Powers: Due to the Liaris Freese skill, his growth will accelerate depending on how strong his feelings are.
  • Empathic Weapon: The Hestia Knife grows in tandem with Bell's own growth—that is to say, it gets stronger as he does—and since his growth is fueled by his emotions and want to get better, it fits.
  • Endearingly Dorky: He's so innocent and kind that many people (mostly women) warm up to him almost immediately.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Apollo is very... interested in getting Bell to join his Familia in Volume 6.
  • Famed In-Story: Granted, anyone that levels up gains some small amount of renown, but Bell is especially famous for shattering the record on how fast a rookie became Level 2. His following numerous misadventures do nothing but turn him more and more into the talk of the town, and further spread his fame worldwide.
  • Farm Boy: He lived and worked in a farm when he was younger.
  • First Kiss: In Memoria Freese he has his first kiss stolen by Ilia. The Unwanted Harem acts about as you would expect.
  • Friendless Background: He had no friends growing up on his grandpa's farm and staved off the loneliness by reading about all of the heroic tales and stories his grandpa would write down and tell him.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: Bell is naive and fairly easy to manipulate, but he's far from dumb, spending evenings studying the monsters in the dungeon and always looking to Take a Third Option when caught in a Morton's Fork. He admits that he's not a genius like Ais or a tactician like Finn, but his plucky resourcefulness gets him out of more than one scrap.
  • Good Is Not Soft: We can't be sure if Bell has a strictly non-killing rule against humans/Xenos or not, (he hasn't killed anyone directly, even in critical moments), but if you press him enough he will fight you and your team and shoot all of you with a lot of Firebolts that can burn badly to end this quickly.
  • Harem Seeker: Bell was one due to his grandfather's influence. Averted in the main narrative, as he is madly in love with Ais and gave up looking for a harem.
  • Hero Protagonist: This is his story because the title is his goal. He wants to save girls in dungeons, and catch up to one girl in particular in power.
  • Heroic Lineage: Downplayed. In Memoria Freese, it's revealed that Bell's father and mother were members of the Zeus and Hera Familia, the two most powerful familia in the history of Orario. But his father was merely a supporter, while his mother was too sickly to leave her bed. As such, they were not truly heroes or adventurers, but their ties to Zeus and Hera continue to influence Bell's journey even if he remains unaware of their past.
  • Heroic Second Wind: In episode 8, after getting mauled by the Minotaur, he gets this at the realization of having to be saved by Ais again. He proceeded to return the favor to the Minotaur, with interest.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He has a pretty low viewpoint of himself. Ryu outright tells him to think more highly of himself, but just telling him to will not fix this problem. Given the fact that Bell almost always fights opponents much stronger and more skilled than he is, this sort of opinion perpetuates itself.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Subverted. Hestia notes that while he's gullible and naive, he generally has a very good read of people and their intentions. After Liliruca robs him blind and cheats him out of his hard-earned money, he continues to trust her after puzzling out her entire backstory, gambling on her becoming The Atoner. In the anime, after nothing more than a mere look at her and a very short conversation with the adventurers extorting her, i.e., they try to recruit him to do the same, he is able to puzzle out most (if not all) of her Freudian Excuse, and he decides to stand by her, no matter what. It works.
  • I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: His reaction whenever he strokes Lili's animal appendages.
  • Ideal Hero: Thanks to his personality and sheer determination to do what he thinks is right he often inspires those around to push even harder. The greatest example of this has to be Finn from Loki Familia who is someone who is always weighing his decisions on a scale choosing the one that will bring him closer to his goal until Bell inspired him.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: He knows his initial self looks weak and pathetic next to a powerful woman of high level like Ais. Bell wants to become a heroic figure and to be a man who is equal to Ais in power. He got the Skill Argonaut due to the former.
  • Immune to Mind Control:
    • Ishtar's attempts to charm him with her sex powers completely fail because Liaris Freese makes him immune to charms thanks to it being powered by his Single-Target Sexuality for Ais.
    • This is later revealed to work on all seduction-based mental attacks, as the singing of mermaids on the middle floors fails to affect him, much to his own surprise.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Yen Press insists his surname has two L's.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness:
    • Prior to defeating the Minotaur, Bell's soul was almost completely pure. Bell's memory of the Minotaur traumatized him and prevented him from truly fulfilling this trope, as Freya explains to Ottar. After defeating the Minotaur...
      It was shining.
      Bell's spirit shone through.
Bright enough to burn his image in Freya's eyes.
Despite being so radiant, the light from his soul was still clear.
      A pure wish.
    • Bell's pure and unending wish to catch up to Ais and stand by her side lets him No-Sell Ishtar's Charm Person ability, because Bell Cranel's Skill makes him too pure to be swayed by the glamour of even a goddess.
    • It's also the reason why Ais is so obsessed with him, as his pureness reminds her of her past self. She goes to great lengths to ensure that he stays pure.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Hestia asks Bell if he'd elope with a beautiful goddess if she came up to him one day and confessed to him. Although it's blatantly obvious to everyone else that she's referring to herself, Bell innocently refuses. He explains that such a thing would never happen to him and even if it did, he would never be worthy of being romantically involved with someone so above him in status.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Bete calls him "Tomato Kid" after an incident where a slain Minotaur's blood spilled all over him and he ran around town all red.
    • Tiona calls him "Little Argonaut" after the fight against the Minotaur, comparing Bell with the story's hero.
    • Since the sixth novel it seems everyone on Orario refers to him as "Rabbit". For example, he being chased is referred by townspeople as a "rabbit chase", while some chasers refer to him as such to his face.
  • Insecure Love Interest: As much as Bell loves and respects Ais, he also feels unworthy to stand by her side unless he gets much stronger. Interestingly enough, this also applies to Hestia, as well. Besides his lack of interest, Bell opposed the idea of getting into a relationship with a Goddess because of a combination of his devotion to her under the belief that gods are above everyone and the vast difference between their lifespans. Hestia herself doesn't seem to mind, claiming that even when Bell does die, she'll come looking for him, no matter how long it takes.
  • Intrinsic Vow: From the prologue onward, Bell is devoted only towards Ais. It's hard to imagine him ever giving up Ais for anyone else. For this reason, he is able to ignore a goddess of beauty's Charm Person ability, which no other mortal is known to be able to do.
  • Keet: Pretty easily excitable. Especially when he gets new weapons and magic.
  • Kid Hero: Only 14 years old, yet he's also one of the most well-known adventurers in Orario. His youth is also Played for Drama, as his lack of experience contributes to many of his worst traits, namely his cowardice, indecisiveness, and naivety, requiring guidance from Hestia, Lili, and Welf to avoid getting scammed and hurt.
  • Killer Rabbit: His albinism, good looks, and mousy personality earn him plenty of comments comparing him to rabbits, but he's also growing faster than any other adventurer in history, and soon becomes a formidable adventurer in his own right.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: He's got the personality of one, the noble and virtuous fairy tale sort of hero. He strives to become the toughest version of this. Incidentally, he favors light armor instead of the traditional plate.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Within the series, the stats of a person with a status can go from 0 to 999. However, most people reach B (700s) at the very best; practically nobody hits S rank (900s) and reaching it in just one stat is an extraordinary accomplishment. Besides that, everyone tends to have one or more stats dramatically lower than the rest. In contrast, thanks to his Skill Liaris Freese, Bell can not only raise all his stats to S rank, but even go beyond it. Something supposed to be impossible that even the Loki and Freya Familias can't do. In all his known final statuses his stats are all at SS (1000-1199), except for Agility that is always SSS rank (1200+). At Level 4, his final stats were all SSS rank, the highest being SSS 1501. Because of it, Bell has the prowess to stand against opponents one level above him, proving inferior to them mainly due to being less skilled, and has even defeated a few. The effect just increases with each passing level.
  • Likes Older Women: Not deliberately, but every girl that Bell (14 years old) has an emotionally significant attachment to women that are significantly older than him, from Eina (19 years old), Hestia (thousands of years old) to Ais (16 years old), the love of his life. His childish personality, however, causes the first to initially see him as a younger brother and the last one to think of him as a "rabbit pet".
  • Limit Break: Bell, very rarely, has been able to enter an empowered state called Limit Off. So far, only three times: In Volume 5 against the Black Goliath, in Sword Oratoria Volume 12 against Enyo's Nidhogg, and in Volume 18 against Ottar.
  • Lovable Coward: His aw-shucks modesty, indecisiveness, and lack of confidence in himself leads him to try and run away from most of his problems in his early days as an adventurer. In fact, he spends so much time running away that by the time he reaches Level 4, he gains the Escape development ability, improving his already impressive speed so long as he's running away from something. Despite this, he finds reasons to stand his ground when the chips are down, upon which he can become recklessly brave when fighting for the sake of someone else, turning him into a Cowardly Lion.
  • Love at First Sight: It took only one look for Bell to fall hopelessly in love with Ais.
  • Luck Stat: Eventually gains a "Luck" stat down the line, which will allow him to possibly pull off a justified Deus ex Machina or two. Hestia even alludes to this, pointing out that it probably is a sort of "divine protection".
  • Lucky Rabbit's Foot: He may not be an actual rabbit, or even a Hume Bunny, but people have called him a lucky rabbit on at least one occasion, such as when he was at a casino and had such a spectacular winning streak all onlookers were shocked. Syr even sought for his presence in a high-stakes gambling game to improve their odds of winning. As if to lampshade this, his new alias is "Rabbit's Foot" after reaching Level 4 from his duel with Asterios.
  • Luminescent Blush: Whenever Ais is in the picture, as well as when Hestia gets a little too flirtatious.
  • Magnetic Hero: A more subdued example. He is willing to risk his life to protect his comrades who are also often just as ostracized as he was. He has earned the enmity of many though.
  • Magic Knight: Bell is primarily a close-combat fighter given his specialty in handling knives, but between Firebolt and Argonaut, he packs serious magical firepower too.
  • Marshmallow Hell: He's subjected to having his head in between a girl's chest a few times, but hilariously he's reacted positively to them.
  • Meta Power-Up: His skill, "Liaris Freese" enables him to increase his stats at a quicker rate. It also lets him break the limit impossible to break for anyone else, with most of his stats hitting Rank SS and at least Agility reaching SSS when Rank S is usually considered the pinnacle of power.
  • Mistaken for Gay: At one point, by Ais herself. She believed that the "person he wanted to catch up to" was Bete, since they were both speed-type blade users (not realizing that she herself is a speed-type blade user). To her credit, she's not fond of that theory.
  • Mr. Imagination: Not in the modern "Chuunibyou" sense as he's in an fantasy universe, but he is too much into the heroes in Classical Mythology.
  • My Greatest Failure: Views having to get rescued by Ais from a Minotaur as this. As a result, he constantly tries to get stronger so that he'll never need to be rescued like that ever again, in addition to catching up to her in terms of skills and strength. The thought of having to be saved by her again from a Minotaur again was what triggered his Heroic Second Wind when previously he was just getting brutalized by the monster.
  • Nice Guy: One of the nicest guy the series has to offer.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: He never gets it when women try to pick him up or flirt with him.
  • Oblivious to Love: Utterly fails to pick up on Hestia's and Syr's affection for him, and they can't be blamed for being too subtle, given the outright Love Confessions they each gave him.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: His "Hestia Knife" is only useful if he's wielding it, due to Hestia's blessing being imprinted on the weapon. Liliruca is shocked to find out it was worth maybe 30 valis when she tried to pawn it off after stealing it from him, whereas a typical generic weapon would be worth hundreds or thousands of valis.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: As much as he loves Marshmallow Hells, and has quite an active "imagination", if a woman genuinely comes on to him, even his beloved Ais, he shrieks and tries to run away. This is sometimes Played for Laughs, like with the aforementioned Ais, and sometimes played for drama, as with the Ishtar familia.
  • Parrying Bullets: Bell gets strong and fast enough to a point that he can use his knife to cut through projectiles fired by monsters.
  • Phosphor-Essence: Overlaps with this trope since Argonaut is a highly personal skill, reflecting one quality of Bell's personality; Being pure right down to the soul.
  • Playing with Fire: He gains the "Firebolt" spell after reading a spell book.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Since seduction charms don't work on him, his only reaction to seeing Ishtar naked was asking her to put her clothes back on.
  • Power Glows: When he uses his Argonaut skill, the part of his body or weapon he is charging it in glows. In the anime, when he used it while empowered by the Limit Off state, his whole body turned white.
  • Power of Trust: He turns his party members from mere acquaintances into True Companions by giving them his trust when any rational person wouldn't. It has certainly worked with Liliruca and Welf Crozzo.
  • Pretty Boy:
    • Implied. Informed Attractiveness is an epidemic in this series; you can never really be sure how attractive anyone is until you hear them described. Bell's case was worse than most because as the viewpoint character we never really do. That said, in Sword Oratoria, when Lefiya first bumps into him, he's said to have "rubellite eyes" and "snow white hair". He's never outright stated to be attractive, but it seems that if he's not a bishonen already, he will be in a couple of years. Meanwhile, he's drawn as more generically moe.
    • Hestia adores his "cool looks" while Haruhime also calls him handsome. Aisha also calls him handsome and attractive and wants to take him back to her bedroom after he bumps into her in the Pleasure District, as does the rest of the Ishtar Familia.
    • Side materials and spin-offs like Memoria Freese put Bell in more fanciful outfits give him a neater hairstyle to draw out his full pretty boy looks.
  • Red Baron: After defeating a Minotaur and reaching Level 2, he is given the nickname "Record Holder" for reaching Level 2 faster than anyone else in history (the next fastest person, Ais, took a year). He also gets the less impressive alias "Little Rookie" by the gods, but given what was seen in the Light Novels, it could have been a hell of a lot worse. After reaching Level 4 his alias is changed to Rabbit Foot to acknowledge his speed and the rate at which he climbed levels. It also refers to his good luck.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Bell isn't villainous, but get him determined enough and he's most certainly dangerous.
  • Rescue Romance: He falls super hard for Ais when she saves him from a Minotaur that her party let escape. Later on, he doesn't appear to notice that he became the rescuer for Lili, and that she is in love with him.
  • Reverse Grip: Unusually for a Light Novel or Shōnen protagonist, he favors fighting with agility and knives held icepick-style. He wields a special dagger known as the Hestia Knife that conducts magic, and has had other knives made by Welf from Minotaur and later unicorn horn.
  • Rhyming Names: Bell Cranel. It certainly helps sell his "cute" character.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl:
    • In the anime, particularly in episode 7 when he tries to dodge Ais and lands his face in her rear. He absolutely screeches. It has to be heard to be believed.
    • It is outright stated in Volume 7 that he sounded like Hestia when he screamed.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: For several episodes, whenever he saw Ais, his reaction is to run away. It isn't until Eina brings Ais in and his escape gets barricaded does he finally get to talk to Ais.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: He's so in love with Ais that he doesn't notice the other female character's affections towards him. Actually becomes an important plot point when Bell is staring down Ishtar, a goddess of beauty. She's unable to charm him as a result of his single-minded quest to impress Ais.
  • Situational Sword: He later obtains the Ox Slayer skill, which greatly ramps up his stats whenever he's up against any "bull-type" monster. This primarily extends to minotaurs. The trigger for this skill's manifestation is his desire to defeat Asterius after losing to him.
  • Skewed Priorities: He becomes an adventurer in the hopes of one day rescuing a Damsel in Distress and beginning a Rescue Romance. There are some glaring problems with this plan and the first is that any girl he finds in the Dungeon will almost certainly be a Action Girl, and thus unlikely to need rescuing.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: Bell seems to be a cross between this and Stock Shōnen Hero. He starts off being deemed weak by everyone and rejected from most familia, which led him to a steep learning curve of training to increasing his power and actually has to be rescued a number of times throughout the story. However he is able to rapidly grow in strength compared to everyone else due to his unique skill "Liaris Freese", going from being overwhelmed by a Minotaur to being the one to defeat the borderline Hopeless Boss Fight. While he is introduced as a Harem Seeker who goes dungeon crawling to try and pick up girls, this gets dropped early on and he ends up being a Chick Magnet who acquires his own Unwanted Harem. Unlike most light novel protagonists, his physical appearance stands out due to being an albino and he doesn't belong to any modern society which is reflected in his fashion. In addition, while he isn't exactly an Idiot Hero he has been known to have a Horrible Judge of Character, being naive and overly trusting.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: As mentioned above, Bell takes aspects from both this and Stock Light-Novel Hero. His Shonen traits come from how he started off very weak and overshadowed by everyone, before working gradually towards becoming stronger. He's also quite cheerful and while not quite an Idiot Hero does tend to be blissfully ignorant. Also, his appearance heavily stands out with him being albino with Anime Hair.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: According to an Alternate Universe short story, Bell's aunt Alfia says he got all of his looks from his mother, from his hair, to his face, to his smile. The only thing he got from his father are his red eyes.
  • Super Gullible:
    • Bell is very easily lured in by gestures of kindness. Hestia worries about him as he got conned by Lili before her Heel–Face Turn, while Lili is concerned he has fallen for it again with Welf.
    • In Volume 4, Bell does a quest for Naza to obtain a rare potion ingredient that can be sold for 9,000 valis. He's delighted to find that the reward is 24 potions, a value of 12,000 valis that more than makes up the value. But a quick taste test from Lili confirms that these potions are watered down and their combined value is no more than 4,800 valis. Bell is disheartened that a child from Miach's Familia and a friend of his would rip him off like this.
  • Superpower Lottery:
    • His "Liaris Freese" skill, which even the author refers to as "game breaking". It lets him to level grind extremely quickly, allowing him to become a Level 2 Adventurer in a month. The average time it takes someone to rank up, if they even do so (more than half of all adventurers are still Level 1), is unknown, but Naaza, a friend of Bell, took six years to do so. The former record is one year! And that was previously held by Ais.
    • Taken even further down the line when he hits Level 3 within a month after reaching Level 2... and then hitting Level 4 in two months after that! For reference, most adventurers don't even get to Level 2, and many of the Level 3 and 4 adventurers in the story are in their twenties and thirties.
    • He finally hits Level 5 in half a year since he became an adventurer. This officially also makes him a first-class adventurer, of which there are less than forty in the entire city. He is part of Orario's "elite", a.k.a. one of the strongest of the strongest city in the world.
    • His second skill, Argonaut, is even more ridiculous, as a fully-charged shot can easily obliterate monsters several levels above him in overall prowess. When he was just Level 2, it completely destroyed the upper body of the Level 5 Black Goliath. When he was Level 4, it annihilated Enyo's "trump card", the Nidhogg.
  • Super-Speed: His highest stat is Agility because of his speed-based fighting style, and his fleet-footedness contributes to his reputation as being rabbit-like.
  • Tears of Fear: At the start, he was scared of Minotaurs due to nearly being killed by one at the outset of the story. He gets over it after killing the Minotaur sent after him by Ottar, later going on to kill Minotaurs by the bunch.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Actively grinding them:
    • He starts off with just a normal dagger, but has gained new skills, magic, weapons, and armor, ever since.
    • He goes from screaming in fear from a Minotaur to felling a Silverback, an eleventh floor monster, by himself. And in episode 8, he defeats an even tougher Minotaur himself, utilizing all the training, equipment, and skills he's acquired up to that point. Everyone present during that scene was entirely shocked by how fast he's grown.
    • In Volume 6, he was able to go from being completely shut-down by the Level 3 Hyacinthus, to fighting on par with Hyacinthus (even surpassing him in terms of speed), in the span of one week. Only from training with Tiona and Ais.
    • In Volume 7, he goes from being beat-down by Aisha alone, to giving a literal beatdown to Phryne, making her fall through a stone floor, and then immediately afterward facing Aisha one on one to beat her down with an Elemental Punch to the gut.
    • In Volume 11, he's able to hold his own against a level 7 threat despite being many levels below Asterius at the time. Though, it should be noted his opponent was extremely handicapped by the lost of one arm and other grave injuries in addition to exhaustion, and also deliberately left Bell alive for a rematch.
    • In Volume 12/the beginning of Season 4, Bell has appropriately ranked up to level 4. His power up is apparent to his team by the impressive Argonaut Firebolt he launches in the first episode, but it's underscored by his more mature and leader-like demeanor. He's no longer a rookie.
  • True Companions: When he makes friends, he makes them for life. Welf and Lili are fiercely loyal to him and all three would be willing to risk death for each other.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: It has yet to be shown anyone who has earned Bell's grudge, and people have done some truly horrific things to him, and his loved ones.
  • Twice Shy: He is attracted to Ais, but unable to tell her this because he feels unworthy of standing next to her. Ais feels pretty much the same way, but is too unsure of how to handle of her emotions to speak her mind.
  • Unskilled, but Strong:
    • A variation. Bell is more of the self-trained version of the trope, as since he was the only member of his familia there was nobody to teach him. It's only after training with Ais that he gains the skills needed to fight effectively. Even then, he still struggles against senior human opponents. Ais later gives him some tips, (namely on how to feint) but never an actual fighting style, letting him learn through their sparring sessions. Partially because of her own lack of skill as an instructor.
    • In Volume 8 this is Averted, too: Eina notes that he fought on par with adventurers of his level in spite of the fact that he had far less experience.
    • By Volume 10, however, he is back to it. Relatively though. As his major opponents are all first-class adventurers, the most skilled figthers of the city with years of experience, he is significantly inferior to his adversaries. He also loses to some second-class adventurers, namely Ryuu and Freya Familia's Level 4s, though the former is an outstanding prodigy and in the latter case they are members of the strongest faction, which also specializes in fights between people.
  • Unwanted Harem: Bell's sheer niceness has both Hestia and Lili falling for him (his cute looks also help). Even Eina, who is trained to not get attached to any particular adventurers, can't help but feel some level of attraction towards him, though it isn't clear if its romantic or not. There's even the goddesses who followed Hestia on her date who all take a liking to Bell and form a mob around him much to his confusion. Volume 7 starts off with an Amazoness of the Ishtar Familia taking a liking to him, dragging him off to the Familia home, and him getting mobbed by the many Amazoness in the Familia who all want to have their way with him. The girls at the Hostess of Fertility also admire his tush and lament that Syr had gotten engaged to "Bell" earlier that day. Unfortunately for all of them, the only girl Bell wants is Ais and unfortunately for Bell, Ais is pretty much the only girl who has yet to show clear romantic interest in him.
  • White Is Pure: His albinism symbolizes his Incorruptible Pure Pureness. The rest of the cast gets this, which is why he's so well-liked.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's understandably frightened by Minotaurs, given that he was almost killed by one. When Freya and Ottar realized this, the former had the latter find and train a Minotaur to unleash on Bell to force him to grow past his fear and become a better adventurer. Bell almost died, but he succeeded in defeating the Minotaur, and every Minotaur after that did not instill fear in Bell the way the first and second did.
  • Worthy Opponent: The Xenos Asterius considers Bell to be his greatest rival despite being far stronger than Bell because in his past life he was the Minotaur Bell faced on the 9th floor.
  • You Monster!: In the Memoria Freese campaign Winter Magic Miracle, he screams this towards Vitteaux after discovering the latter's true colors.
  • You Remind Me of X: When he regains consciousness and finds Ais Wallenstein giving him a Lap Pillow, he initially mistakes her for his mother.

The Goddess of the Hestia Familia.

Newly arriving on the lower world, Hestia, after multiple failures, finally starts her own familia after recruiting Bell. As a result, Hestia cares deeply for her only familia member, and strives to help Bell grow to become a powerful adventurer in any way she can.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: She gets on her hands and knees when asking Hephaestus to make a knife for Bell. Made more prominent by the fact that she does this at a party in full view of a lot of others.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Among the other gods and goddesses, Hestia was always looked down and treated as an outcast. Her arriving in the mortal realm has her aiming to prove herself better by leading her own familia.
  • Badass in Distress: Mord's familia kidnaps her in order to lure Bell into a duel. Justified in that she shouldn't even be there, and unleashing her divine powers is against the rules, so she more or less is just a regular Human when not using her divinity.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Though unequivocally kind by nature, pushing her too far with the insults will make her feel the need to retort. Just ask Loki.
Hestia: You came to laugh at me when everybody's going to be laughing at you? What's with your utterly sad... flat chest?! Ahahahahahaha~!
  • Big-Breast Pride: She's short, but she's confident her big breasts more than make up for it. She uses this against the flat-chested Loki.
  • Bookworm: She is an avid reader.
  • Breakout Character: Fan art, stories, and cosplay based on Hestia have exploded onto the internet, far more than any other character.
  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has a huge opening on the chest area that shows off a lot of cleavage.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: One of her most defining character traits. She hates it when any woman gets a little too friendly with Bell, especially Ais and Liliruca. When Bell ends up seeing the female members of the cast bathing (including her), she gets upset; not because he saw her naked, but because he saw other girls naked.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique:
    • Twenty-Four Hour Dogeza! Though it is a bit of a subversion as it doesn't really cause Hestia any harm aside from cramping and aching joints for a few days. She performed it to get Hephaestus to make Bell a new knife.
Hestia: [continuing to prostrate herself] It's an ultimate secret technique that grants forgiveness for any act and grants any and all requests... said Takemikazuchi.
    • In a more serious example she releases the seal on her power to save Bell later.
  • Determinator: Much like how Bell is determined to fight, grow stronger, and win Ais's affection, Hestia will stop at nothing to make sure Bell becomes a seasoned adventurer.
  • Divine Date: She is a goddess in love with the mortal Bell. Unfortunately for her, he doesn't feel the same way.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Episode 5 of the anime opens with her chugging down tankards of booze whilst bemoaning Bell's lack of reciprocation for her feelings, stopping only when she lets out a smoke-gushing belch before collapsing face-first onto the table and devolving into Inelegant Blubbering.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: When Hestia releases her divine power, her hair clips fall off and her hair falls down from its Girlish Pigtails.
  • Expressive Hair: Her pigtails can move with her emotion, becoming straight and rigid when she's surprised or angry.
  • A Fool and Her New Money Are Soon Parted: She's terrible with money. Even after seizing all of Apollo's assets she decides to blow it all on extravagant renovations to his mansion to accommodate the new members of her familia (who at this point is just four members strong, nowhere near enough to justify staying in a mansion). What's worse is that these assets could've instead been used to help pay off her already-overwhelming 200 million valis debt to Hephaestus, an amount that is implied will take her decades, if not centuries to work off on her own.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed. Almost all of the gods and goddesses have expressed dismay about her quirks, but are shown to be on friendly terms with her.
  • From Roommates to Romance: One-sided on her end. Hestia harbors obvious romantic affection for Bell and initially doesn't really mind that he's the only member of her Familia because she gets to live alone with him, which she takes advantage of to sneak into his bed often. To her dismay, Bell insists on treating her as a family member instead of a love interest.
  • Genki Girl: Energetic persona, especially towards Bell. She's almost certainly the most out going of any God's seen in the series.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in two twintails, and she is Immortally Immature.
  • The Glomp: She loves tackle hugging Bell if he's away for too long.
  • Handy Feet: She briefly uses her sandaled feet to point menacingly at Lili as if they were hands upon welcoming her into the Hestia Familia house.
  • Height Angst: She's considered short even among the gods, which annoys her. This in part led to her nickname "Loli-Big-Boobs".
  • Hidden Depths: In book 6, she shows some major talent for diplomatic maneuvering and negotiation. Furthermore she shows surprisingly good tactical foresight for combat, and although she isn't able to fight in the War Games, she comes up with several impressive strategies for her Familia to use.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Her feelings for Bell are made pretty clear, but while Bell does appreciate Hestia's company, he does not see Hestia as anything other than family.
These thoughts went through Hestia's mind as she lay happily in Bell's embrace.
This is true love. We are perfect for each other.
In this last moment, Hestia misunderstood in a very big way.
  • I Call It "Vera": The knife Hestia gives Bell to defeat the Silverback is named "Hestia Knife" by her.
  • Iconic Item: Her breast ribbon, which only serves to emphasize her bust.
  • Immortal Immaturity: She's an eons old immortal goddess, who behaves like a bratty child. The novels explains her behavior with this trope.
  • In-Series Nickname: Many give her a variant of "Loli-Big-Boobs".
  • Irony: In Classical Mythology, Hestia is the goddess of family. Her familia consisted of just one official member for a while before they actually managed to get new members, and yet is still comparatively small to most other familias. She was also a virgin goddess, yet one of her goals in-series is to be in a relationship with Bell. The latter part is acknowledged In-Universe and later Played for Drama in order to highlight the Deliberate Values Dissonance in how the gods see sex.
  • Jerkass to One: To Loki, with their relationship being close to a rivalry, though it should be made clear the latter tends to start the quarrels. After Loki insults Hestia one too many times, Hestia fires back by pressing her Berserk Button.
  • Lazy Bum: When she first arrived in Orario, she took advantage of her good-natured friend Hephaestus, and loitered in the latter's familia for three months doing nothing except eating croquettes and reading magazines all day. Hephaestus eventually had enough and kicked her out.
  • Leg Focus: She has quite a few scenes dedicated to highlighting her legs thanks to her status as The Tease as well as the series' primary Ms. Fanservice
  • Lonely Together: She and Bell came together as a familia because they were both rejects looking for companionship.
  • Loser Deity: Hestia is regarded as a joke among her fellow gods. For a long time, she was unable to recruit anyone into her familia and initially survived by freeloading off Hephaestus. She also had a reputation as one of the only virgin gods who was never able to find a man in heaven. Loki in particular has great fun bullying Hestia over her poverty and short stature. Even after Hestia lucks out and recruits her first member, Bell Cranel, they are forced to face poor living accommodations of an abandoned church with Hestia working several part-time jobs to help them get by. After their familia has a miraculous victory against Apollo in a Familia War Game, they inherit all of his wealth and attain incredible popularity... until it's revealed Hestia blew all their savings on additional expenses rather than paying off their debts.
  • Magical Barefooter: She's an immortal goddess who almost never wear shoes. In the light novel, she is barefoot everywhere unless dressed up for very formal occasions, while in the anime she dons a pair of geta sandals for the streets while still being barefoot indoors (though even in places not meant to do it). No reason is given, although considering Hestia is the Greek goddess of the home and shoes are not worn at home in many cultures, it somewhat makes sense for her to be barefoot.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Since she dislikes Ais, she always calls her "Wallenwhatsit".
  • Marshmallow Hell: Her glomps sometimes end up putting Bell through this.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Her dress is rather form-fitting and very revealing, making it clear Hestia has quite the curves, especially her large chest which are further emphasized by her breast ribbon. Though short-heighted, Hestia also still has quite the shapely legs. The manga and anime also place a lot of focus on her breasts, legs, and feet.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: After being indebted to Hephaestus after convincing her to make Bell a Legendary Weapon, Hestia takes up an assortment of part-time jobs to pay off her loan, including working at the Hephaestus familia store at the Babel, as well as a food stall attendant.
  • Nice Girl: Every other deity mocked Hephaestus for being ugly; Hestia didn't, which is part of the reason as to why they lived with each other for such a long time. While she can be quite the Clingy Jealous Girl, she is still fairly kind, sweet and compassionate, willing to help Bell get stronger for his own happiness, even at the expense of her own.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While she may have had no other choice than unsealing her powers to deal with the rude adventurers who kidnapped her and tried to murder Bell, Liliruca, and Welf, doing so awakened an irregular boss monster that very nearly killed everybody.
  • The Nicknamer: Persistently calls Ais "Wallen-nanigashi-kun" ("Wallenwhatsit-kun") and Lili "Supporter-kun".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Hestia is usually very upfront and unashamed in her flirtations towards Bell. However one instance has her being flustered, when Bell is so tired that he agrees to Hestia's teasing suggestion to sleep in the same bed. Hestia had expected Bell to become embarrassed, but he was so tired he didn't care.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: For all their enmity, Hestia will admit to Loki's love for her familia.
  • Out of Focus: As Bell gets stronger and the familia gains more members, leading to increased adventures in the dungeon (which gods are forbidden from entering), Hestia is gets increasingly less screentime and is relegated to more supporting roles as she awaits her children's return.
  • Parental Substitute: Although she's much more interested in having Bell fall in love with her, Hestia takes up this role to her orphaned child, constantly guiding him, supporting him, and showering him with affection after he lost his grandfather. Bell also admits he sees Hestia as his new family, loving her as if she was a mother figure.
  • Pretty Freeloader: Before she met Bell, she lived off Hephaestus. This is explained as Hestia being the god of hearths, while Hephaestus is the god of blacksmiths. Thus, a commonality.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She looks like a young teenage girl, but she's actually a Physical God who's millennia old.
  • The Rival: She and Loki truly don't get along. As an example, where Loki will berate Hestia for her small family and short height, Hestia will retort with Loki's flat chest. Their rivalry seemingly has their origins even since the two were in heaven. Freya quips that the two may be friends beneath it all, since they bicker with each other instead of just avoiding each other, which the two goddesses disagree with.
  • Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: She generally acts as if Bell is already her boyfriend and claims he's "cheating" on her when he's getting along with other women. While Bell does care a lot for Hestia, Ais is the only woman he wants for a girlfriend.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her mini dress leaves her back exposed.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She doesn't mind Bell seeing her naked at all in episode 12 after Hermes causes him to slip into the women's bathing area while making him peek on them together.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: While quite attractive already, she goes the extra mile to look nice for Bell on a date, washing up at a divine bath house and wearing her hair down.
  • Show Some Leg: She has no problems showing off her legs to tease anyone.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She makes very clear that she only wants Bell. She goes as far as swear that after he dies, she will look for him every time he reincarnates.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Loki and Lili. In the case of Lili its over winning Bell's affection, and when they aren't getting jealous over each other they do get along fairly well.
  • The Tease: She's not above flirting with Bell or showing off her assets to make him react. While she does it out of her own attraction to him, she sometimes does it to mess with him.
  • Tsundere: A Sweet type. She can quickly lapse into anger when she gets jealous, before abruptly reverting back to sweet when trying to woo Bell.
  • Unknown Rival: To Ais Wallenstein, due to being Bell's primary crush and leads Hestia to be extremely jealous. Though Ais for the most is indifferent towards Hestia and unaware of the goddess's hostility towards her.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her actions to unseal her powers to deal with her kidnappers resulted in the awakening of a powerful irregular floor boss.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: When she's not squabbling with Liliruca over Bell's affection, the two get along quite well and respect one another's experience and wisdom.
  • Work Off the Debt: The knife she begged Hephaestus to make for Bell turns out to have cost a staggering two hundred million valis. For some context, during the first season, Bell was looking at gear that cost just a few thousand valis, and considered that to be a bit too expensive for him. He suffers a Color Failure moment when he finds out, though Hestia tells them not to worry about it as she considered this her own personal debt, and not that of her familia. Considering the various and likely low paying jobs she was seen working, it likely would take centuries for Hestia to pay that amount off.

    Liliruca Arde

Liliruca Arde

Voiced by: Maaya Uchida (JP), Hilary Haag (EN) Foreign VAs

A Pallum supporter formerly of the Soma Familia. Initially she used a spell to disguise herself as a chienthrope, or dog-based beastman.

Liliruca, generally referred to as Lili, acts as a supporter for adventurers she teams up with by acting as the mule to pick up money and items dropped off the monsters that her teammates kill (though she can still fight on her own). She eventually forms a group with Bell after catching an interest in the Goddess dagger he has equipped, but later becomes a friend and his true Supporter after he saves her life. She unofficially becomes a member of the Hestia Familia as a result, but officially joined the Hestia Familia during the War Game arc.

  • A-Cup Angst: Despite having a modest bust herself, Lili still gets easily jealous of the other girls around her who are much larger in that department, especially when taking a bath with the other women in the Hestia Familia.
  • Animal Motifs: Dogs, due to her tendency to disguise herself as a chienthrope.
  • The Atoner: She attempts to do this with Bell after being rescued by him despite trying to screw him over and leaving him behind when a large group of dangerous monsters surround him.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: At first, she was only interested in supporting Bell so she could steal from him. However over time, she gets to see more and more of Bell's kind side and comes to rethink her opinion towards him.
    • After one run, they make quite a bit of money, and he happily gives her half of it without a second thought. He then explains that he couldn't have earned that much on his own, which starts to change her opinion of him.
    • When Lili requests for a day off and willing to accept a penalty, Bell brushes it aside and lets her off without any hassle at all, while adding that she could take a day off whenever she wanted.
    • What ultimately enables Lili to pull a Heel–Face Turn. In spite of betraying Bell, stealing from him, lying to him, and leaving him to die, Bell comes back and saves her. This completely changes her opinion on Bell and allows her to see not all adventurers are bad, and from then on in becomes truly loyal to Bell.
  • Bigot with a Crush: Lili initially hates all adventurers, including Bell, because she believed they would always mistreat supporters like her. She is unable to understand why Bell is so nice to her and brushes it off as him being too stupid to see she's deceiving him and using him. However, her view changes once Bell saves her life, just after she had betrayed him. From then on, she gains Undying Loyalty and romantic feelings for Bell.
  • Broken Bird: Her parents' death left her effectively as an indentured servant among a bunch of well-armed junkies. Not to mention any attempt at simply leaving Soma Familia to live a non-adventurer's life led directly to her familia mates following her and literally stomping out said attempt. When she works with Bell who is a morally strong and kind-hearted adventurer, Lili can't understand why he would be so fair and nice to her. It takes Bell saving her life and forgiving her for betraying him for her to start to really trust him.
  • Bully Magnet: She has been bullied and belittled by adventurers solely because they feel she's lower than they are. Her small size only helps to reinforce their perceived superiority to her, as she is unable to physically fight back against their abuses, and is unfortunately also reliant on them to survive.
  • Character Development: Goes from a thief who believed there was no one good left in the world, to Bell's most loyal ally after he saves her life.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She becomes this towards Bell after he rescues her from being left-for-dead by her Familia. Hestia in particularly is unhappy with Lili's attempts to make some moves on Bell.
  • Commonality Connection: Bell is attached to Lili because he saw how lonely she was, much like him before Hestia invited him to join her familia.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: When Bell, whom she just betrayed moments before and Left for Dead, of all people, comes to her rescue after she's been mugged by the adventurers of Soma Familia and left for dead herself, she angrily rants and raves at him for it while crying uncontrollably. Bell responds by giving her a much needed Cooldown Hug.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: Subverted when she stole Bell's knife and left him outnumbered and on his own, but not in the way you might expect. Moments after the act she was working hard to justify it to herself not to turn back and help Bell. She might just have turned back, but she gets mugged almost immediately by the wastrels in her familia.
  • Crush Blush: Usually whenever Bell strokes her (illusionary) animal appendages, she blushes at the sign of affection.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents died in the dungeon when she was young. Adventurers then ridiculed her constantly, giving her almost nothing for all of her work, and when she tried to find a new job, they would trash the place just to spite her.
  • Defector from Decadence: She defects from the Soma Familia after being Left for Dead.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She prefers Bell to call her Lili rather than Liliruca.
  • Dudley Do-Right Stops to Help: She meets Bell this way, when she bumps into him while running from an irate adventurer. His first instinct is to stop the guy's sword attack. When questioned, Bell says he saved Lililuka because she was a girl, not understanding why he was chasing her.
  • Easily Forgiven: Lili lied, swindled, and stole from Bell during their partnership and outright betrays him by setting a trap where he's surrounded by monsters while she runs away with his knife. Despite this, Bell holds no ill will against her and doesn't hesitate to rescue her when she's Left for Dead by the Soma Familia.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Welf tends to call Lili "Lilisuke", or "Lil' Lili" (translated into English as "Lil' Bit"). She hates this, but begrdugingly lets him call her that after a while.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: She's very confused to Bell's kind gestures and at one point outright questions why he cares for her. But, it's Bell's kindness for her which ultimately leads to her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Fantastic Arousal: She gets a little turned on when Bell plays with her dog ears in episode 7. Since the ears are fake, she must have been playing with him.
  • Freudian Excuse: She was constantly ridiculed by adventurers prior to Bell. As a result, she grew to mistrust them, and tried to screw them over as much as she thought she could get away with, such as splitting the money with Bell by 40/60, and sometimes 30/70, instead of 50/50.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Before meeting Bell, almost everyone she has been in a team with has expressed dismay about her quirks as a thieving trickster.
  • Heroic Willpower: She becomes the first person ever to fight off the effects of Soma's wine. This act so impresses Soma that not only does he let Lili leave his familia, he drastically changes the way he treats and interacts with his children.
  • Hobbits: Her race, the Prums, are essentially a bunch of less-hairy hobbits or gnomes.
  • Honorary True Companion: She for all intents and purposes is part of Hestia Familia after her Left for Dead arc, but can't officially join until she gains enough money to break Soma's contract. Once Soma does let her leave, she officially joins Hestia's Familia.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Due to her being much smaller than Bell. Note that Bell isn't that big himself.
  • Human Pack Mule: Her usual designated role for adventure groups is a Supporter. Her Alter Assist skill means she can carry an unlimited load.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Many call her "Lili" for short, which she actually insists on being called.
    • She is also called "Lil'Bit" by Welf, though this may just be translation issues.
    • Hestia prefers to call her "Miss. Supporter"
  • In the Hood: Her standard outfit has her wearing a hood, which also makes it easier to use her Cinderella ability to add or remove her animal ears.
  • The Lancer: She tends to be the second-in-command to Bell. She also serves as a stark contrast to his idealistic, free-spirited personality, with Lili being cautious, crafty, and cynical. This comes full circle in Season 4 when she is made the Commander due to her strategic skills.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Her continued thievery eventually catches up to her after people in her familia began to catch on to her act... which leads to her being Left for Dead. She only survives thanks to Bell saving her.
    • In Volume 6, one of the highest-ranking members of Soma Familia has noticed just how good Lili is at stealing. So he literally takes her prisoner with the objective of breaking her will until she agrees to go back to stealing... for his profit only. Luckily, the Familia member left as a guard thinks he's an asshole as well, and helps Lili to escape long enough for Hestia to negotiate with Soma about releasing Lili from Soma Familia.
  • Left for Dead: Members of the Soma Familia leave her to be killed by Dungeon monsters after stripping her of the items she gathered in the last dungeon crawl. Luckily, Bell arrives to save her.
  • Little Miss Con Artist: She joins adventure groups to steal equipment from her teammates, which she then sells off for money.
  • Long-Range Fighter: While as a Supporter she usually won't be in a position to attack, she uses a wrist-mounted crossbow to give some sniper support if the need rises.
  • Love Redeems: At first, Bell was a sap she was trying to con, but she eventually developed an interest in him.
  • Master of Disguise: Her "Cinderella" spell allows her to change her looks by several degrees; changing her hair, giving herself animal ears and tail, and can even make her look like a different sex. She tells Bell that by doing this people may not recognize her old self, and assume she died somewhere in the dungeon, which is a fairly common occurrence due to how dangerous they are. This is responsible for one of her greatest moments in book 6. Lili fine-tunes 'Cinderella' to such an extent that she manages to successfully impersonate a specific person for several days, and thus executes the equivalent of the entire Trojan Horse strategy - both as the Horse and the strike force inside it - by herself, pulling off one of the greatest spy games in Orario's history.
  • Mirror Character: Her past is not so different from Bell's, being lonely and constantly rejected for being worthless, until one kind soul took them in. This is in part why Bell refuses to give up on Lili, due to seeing himself in her and knowing what she had been through.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Like most Supporters, Lili has the skill "Artel Assist", which allows her to carry loads much larger than she would normally be able to due to offsetting most of the weight.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Compared to seasoned adventurers, Lili is a despicable weakling. Compared to anyone else, Lili is inhumanly agile and a champion weightlifter.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents died while attempting to make a living exploring the dungeons.
  • The Power of Love: Her love for Bell shines so brightly in her heart that it pierces the mental bliss-fog created by Soma's wine and enables her to remain coherent. This impresses Soma himself so much it causes a permanent change in him.
  • Rescue Romance: She completely falls for Bell after the Left for Dead rescue.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: She betrays Bell when he's surrounded by monsters so he can be Left for Dead, but then she herself gets mugged by the Soma Familia who in turn leave her for dead much like she had done for Bell. Unlike most examples of this trope, it doesn't stick and Bell, the very person she had betrayed, comes to her rescue and saves her. From that point on her friendship with Bell goes from pretend to genuine.
  • Ship Tease: Like Ais, Hestia, and other possible romantic partners, she gets her fair share of touching moments with Bell.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Smitten with Bell and will refuse the advances of any other man, including Captain Fynn.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Lili thought all adventurers were selfish and would treat supporters like her as garbage to be exploited. Then she meets Bell, who is a good person treating her as his equal and a valuable party member. After he saves her life and forgives her for lying to him and stealing from him, Lili falls in love with him.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Hestia, due to both girls being romantically interested in Bell.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Like Bell, Yen Press tends to double the L, so she's spelt Lililuka aka Lili in their translation.
  • The Strategist: She takes on this role after becoming an official part of Bell's party, after the "left for dead" arc. For instance, it is her clever thinking that leads the party to take shelter on floor 18's safe zone when the party is stranded from a Dungeon trap.
  • Third-Person Person: She never uses "I" and refers to herself as Lili.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Due to Prums being a race of childlike people, Lili is the smallest and youngest-looking member of the Hestia Familia.
  • Tragic Bigot: Due to the years of abuse at the hands of the adventurers from the Soma Familia, she came to despise all adventurers.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Bell after he saves her despite what she did to him prior. To the point that she is able to shake off the effects of Soma's good stuff.
  • Utility Party Member: She primarily acts as Human Pack Mule, but also additional damage dealing with her bow. So she is looked down by other adventurers for her non-combat roles.
  • Vague Age: Her exact age isn't stated, but she's apparently old enough to be considered a romantic rival for Bell's affection by Hestia. The Memoria Freese mobile game gives her age as 15.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Hestia, going from being a Sitcom Archnemesis to friends when they're not fighting over Bell.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Her "Cinder Ella" ability allows her to put on disguises. For example, between episodes 4-6 she appeared in front of Bell as a chientrope (dog-person). She can make herself look older, younger, taller, and even male.

    Welf Crozzo

Welf Crozzo

Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (JP), David Wald (EN) Foreign VAs

A young blacksmith, descended from a family famous for crafting powerful magic swords, but were one day cursed by the Gods to never make them again due to abusing the sword's power on others. As it turns out, Welf does not have such a curse placed on him, and is sought out by numerous people to create the Crozzo magic sword for them. Welf however, wants none of it, and only wants to create items of his own strength.

Initially part of the Hephaestus Familia, he befriends Bell and joins his party after discovering Bell had been purchasing his armor, while offering to be his personal smith. During the War Game in the 6th novel, he leaves Hephaestus's familia and formally joins Hestia's.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: He's not very popular with the Guild, due to his refusing to use his family's gift (see Superpower Lottery below); a gift that many of them would kill to gain, given that it would give any other blacksmith near-instant wealth and fame.
  • Anti-Magic: His magic, Will-o'-Wisp, is a fire-element spell that can disrupt spells used by his opponents.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: Welf isn't a dedicated combatant, but he's no slouch in a fight and wears a blue scarf that he ties up as a bandana while working at the forge.
  • Best Friend: As the only other guy in the Hestia Familia, Welf quickly becomes this to Bell. Their close friendship and working relationship means that Bell can open up to Welf in ways that he'd be far too embarrassed to around the girls, such as when he gushes praise on the others while they're resting in a bathhouse.
  • Beyond the Impossible: In Volume 14, he manages to create a magic sword that is both unbreakable and will grow alongside him. The only other weapon that can do this is Hestia Knife, which is crafted by Hephaistos herself, the goddess of the forge.
  • BFS: Fights with a huge greatsword that's as long as he is tall.
  • The Blacksmith: His profession.
  • Determinator: Welf wants to prove that he can make a name for himself as a blacksmith without having to rely on his family's special magic swords.
  • Divine Date: Has a crush on Hephaistos.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": He rejects the use of his surname.
  • Fiery Redhead: While he's easy-going in a conversation, Welf is fiercely passionate about his blacksmithing, which is reflected in his hair color.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Although his work is always at least above-average in quality, Welf doesn't get a lot of sales because of the embarrassing names he tends to give the equipment he makes, such as Bell's Pyonkichi armor.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Although he hails from the Roman Empire-inspired nation of Rakia, Welf tends to give his work Japanese names, such as "Pyonkichi" and "Ushiwakamaru".
  • Honor Before Reason: It's pointed out repeatedly that Welf could instantly become rich and famous if he'd just make use of his Magic Sword-making talent. But Welf is so averse to the volatile and unreliable nature of Magic Swords that he stubbornly refuses to make them under any circumstances, which his senior, Tsubaki, calls him out on as insulting to blacksmiths who make use of every last bit of their talents in their craft.
  • Modest Royalty: He was once a noble in Rakia due to descending from the Crozzo line of blacksmiths. But his preference in clothing and easy-going personality don't make this evident, especially since he cast away his family some time ago.
  • Nice Guy: Easy-going, trustworthy, and all around a great friend to have.
  • The Nicknamer: He gives Lili the name "Lili-suke" or "Lil' Lili" because of her diminutive height, which Lili doesn't appreciate.
  • Playing with Fire: His magic can disrupt the activation of other spells, causing them to blow up in their faces with an explosion of fire. In addition, his signature magic swords tends to use fire.
  • Red Is Heroic: Heroic and with red hair.
  • The Smart Guy: The closest the familia gets to one, being The Blacksmith who utilizes his Superpowerful Genetics to forge powerful Magic Swords and in general looks after the Familia's gear. Also being the oldest he's the most knowledgeable adventurer and his expertise can often come in handy.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: His power to create magic swords is due to his bloodline.
  • Superpower Lottery: His bloodline is gifted with the Skill allowing them to forge magic swords that are far superior to what any other blacksmith can make. In book 6 it takes him only a week to forge a pair of swords that can keep 30-odd fighters fully occupied, and break down a huge section of a castle wall!
  • To Be a Master: Welf's end goal is to become a blacksmith able to forge a weapon surpassing the gods with nothing but pure skill without relying on his bloodline.

    Mikoto Yamato

Mikoto Yamato

Voiced by: Chinatsu Akasaki (JP), Margaret Lewis (EN) Foreign VAs

An orphan who was adopted by Takemikazuchi from a young age and trained in the art of combat. After feeling guilty over endangering Hestia Familia, Mikoto feels indebted and ends up leaving Takemikazuchi to join up with Hestia Familia.

  • Action Girl: She is a level 2 adventurer like Bell is when introduced. She is also seen attacking some monsters pursuing their group later on.
  • Bathing Beauty: She enjoys hot baths. In fact, since Takemikazuchi only allowed Familia members to take showers, her first action upon joining the Hestia Familia was to take advantage of the fact that their new home had a working bath tub. The OVA exaggerates this: she goes cuckoo upon finding the hot spring and immediately tries to enforce the practice of a number of bathing rituals.
  • The Big Gal: Her main contribution to the familia is raw power, having mastery of the blade and a very skilled combatant who is the only one who can rival Bell.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Mikoto’s membership in the Hestia Familia is intended to be temporary and she fully intends to transfer back into the Takamikazuchi Familia in one year after her transfer.
  • Gravity Master: Her Futsunomitama (War God's Strike) magic increases gravity to crush an area.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: One of the skills she learns from Takemikazuchi involves sheathing her sword before swiftly and suddenly drawing it to slice something apart with Absurd Cutting Power. Mikoto names this technique "Zekka", or "Eternal Flower".
  • It's All My Fault: Doesn't take the decision to run past Bell's group and lure the monsters chasing her party onto his instead. As a result, she volunteers for a mission to go rescue him. Eventually joins Hestia Familia for the War Games against Apollo, though fully intending to return to Takemikazuchi after the requisite minimum year is up.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: She prefers katanas as her weapons.
  • Minidress of Power: She fights in a very short kimono.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In book seven she ends up causing Hestia Familia a major hit to their reputation by accidently revealing the Goddess' huge debt to Hephaestus, ruining their chances of drawing more recruits. To make matters worse, her, and Chigusa's later attempt to find Haruhime ends up nearly getting Bell raped by Ishtar's Amazons.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Tries to stick to this, and unfortunately lures a large group of monsters onto Bell's group by accident as a result.
  • Red Baron: Absolute Shadow.
  • Samurai Ponytail: She's a samurai-like warrior and her hair is tied in a ponytail to fit the image.
  • Sarashi: Being a swordswoman of the Far East, Mikoto wraps bandages around her chest as underwear.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Ouka and Chigusa. Ouka never seems to pick up the clue though. She later becomes one for Bell and Haruhime, going out of her way to continuously praise Haruhime's support skills (which isn't unjustified) in order to make Bell more interested in her.
  • Walking Armory: While she doesn't carry the weapons herself, but she often switches to spear, bow, katana or shield as the situation demands.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Stats wise she is among bottom of level 2 adventures, but she has years of martial arts and weapon training that no other one in Hestia familia could match up with.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Her role during the War Game against the Apollo Familia is to pin down as much of the familia as she could with Futsunomitama while Bell goes to confront Hyacinthos personally.

    Sanjouno Haruhime

Sanjouno Haruhime

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruhime.png
Voiced by: Haruka Chisuga (JP), Allison Sumrall (EN) Foreign VAs

A female Renart, or fox-person, from the Eastern Lands (and childhood friend of Takemikazuchi Familia) who is forced to work with the Ishtar Familia as a supporter and prostitute in order to survive.

  • Birds of a Feather: She shares a lot of common interests with Bell, which combined with him rescuing her, led to her falling for him.
  • Bookworm: She has loved reading books, especially fairy tales, since childhood.
  • Childhood Friends: She was good friends with Mikoto, Ouka, and Chigusa since their childhood in the Far East.
  • Commonality Connection: Like Bell, she enjoys fairy tales, and is a bit of a daydreamer. Thus, Bell and Haruhime end up having a rather nice conversation.
  • Cool Big Sis: Ends up becoming one to Wiene, looking after and playing with the Vouivre girl.
  • Damsel in Distress: Volume 7 is all about trying to get her out of the Ishtar Familia.
  • Defiled Forever: The poor girl was disowned by her family and ended up sold as a sexual slave, and for years she hoped someone would come and save her. When she meets Bell, at first she refuses his offer to rescue her because, from her perspective, not being "pure" anymore makes her unworthy of being saved by a hero. It takes a hilarious turn when we learn that she's still a virgin, due to always fainting before even being touched by her sexual customers.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crossed it shortly after being sold into slavery and winding up in Ishtar familia as a Sex Slave. This pissed Aisha off so much that she shattered Ishtar's first Killing Stone, and paid dearly for it.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After all the suffering Phryne and Ishtar Familia put her through for years, during the fight between Phryne and Bell, the former demands her to use Uchide no Kozuchi to power her up... and Haruhime uses it instead on Bell, giving him the power up he needs to pummel Phryne.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: For nearly all of the Ishtar Familia arc, Haruhime goes on and on about how her body is "tainted" because she's a forced prostitute and she doesn't deserve to be saved by a hero like Bell because she's "filthy". At the end of the arc, Aisha reveals that Haruhime never sold her body to any customer because she always passed out when a man simply took a bit of clothes off. Haruhime is just so innocent that she didn't understand she never lost her virginity in the first place.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: As the young lady of a noble family, Haruhime always speaks in a very formal manner, down to using "watakushi" instead of plain "watashi".
  • Fox Folk: Renarts is a fox-based breed of Beast Man and is the universe's equivalent to the kitsune.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Golden-haired blonde and a sweet woman who rescues Bell from Attempted Rape, repeatedly.
  • The Heart: The girliest member who has no combat ability herself and acts solely as support. She also takes up the role of maid around the familia as well as being one of Bell's love interests.
  • Hime Cut: Haruhime has straight full bangs, collarbone-length sidelocks, and hip-length straight hair. She was born into a noble family in the Far East, dresses in a kimono, and has many Yamato Nadeshiko traits.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: She was disowned by her clan and ended up being sold as a prostitute. Despite this, she's extremely sweet and gentle, always radiating an aura of innocence. In fact, she's actually a terrible prostitute... so much so that she has never had one customer and is still a virgin.
  • Impoverished Patrician: She was originally a sheltered princess before being disowned at the age of eleven due to being accused of eating an important offering of Purified Rice Cakes meant for the deity Amaterasu while sleep walking. She was forced to become a prostitute in order to survive.
  • The Ingenue: Despite being a prostitute, she radiates an aura of innocence. She's actually so innocent that she doesn't understand she's still a virgin because she always passed out before any of her customers could even touch her.
  • Interclass Friendship: She was raised as the daughter of a high-ranking family of the Far East, but she still liked to play with Mikoto and other poor children.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: She wears a beautiful red kimono because of her upbringing as a high-ranking lady in the Far East.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Despite being a member of the Fox Folk, the only non-humanoid parts of her body are her ears and tail.
  • Loophole Abuse: Shortly after being freed from the Ishtar Familia by Bell, Hestia catches them holding hands when he was trying to help her. She immediately enacts a rule that people of opposite genders couldn't hold hands. Haruhime then puts her tail closer to Bell's hand, though Hestia immediately closes that loophole by also stating that no tails are allowed either.
  • Meido: After she joins Hestia familia, Haruhime does the household chores in the mansion as a live-in maid since she doesn't like fighting.
  • Miko: Not in the real sense, but as a renart from the Far East, Haruhime has magic abilities similar to a miko's. When she joins the party and adventuring, she uses Far Eastern spells to support the party's adventurers by boosting their levels and make them more powerful.
  • Morality Pet: Aisha playing the role of a kind Cool Big Sis to Haruhime is one of her most evident redeeming qualities. Aisha's fondness of Haruhime is so strong that she once shattered a Killing Stone to save Haruhime from being sacrificed.
  • Nice Girl: She's possibly the nicest girl in the series. Back when she was a noblewoman, Haruhime asked her father to share her food with the gods and poor children living at the shrine near their mansion. She also became friends with the poor children, Mikoto among them, and liked to play with them at the field.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: When trying to take Bell's clothes off, merely seeing his collarbone is enough for her to faint. Aisha reveals that the reason Haruhime is still a virgin is that every time she had a customer, she'd pass out in fear/anxiety before the guy actually did anything. Haruhime herself seems unaware that she is still a virgin; it's not clear whether Aisha or Bell have told her yet.
  • Power High: The feeling of being instantly leveled up by Uchide no Kozuchi is intoxicating to those under its effects. Even Bell says he feels like an almighty god while temporarily boosted to Level 4.
  • Rescue Romance: Bell saves her from her life as a slave of the Ishtar Familia and lets her join Hestia Familia, so Haruhime naturally falls for him.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: She didn't go out much when she still lived as a noble lady, resulting in her naive personality.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Despite her kind, well-mannered and timid nature, she displays a surprising amount of bravery and strength whenever those she cares for are threatened. First shown when she shows Bell the underground passage so he can escape safely, and later when she uses her magic to give him a power boost so he can fight evenly against Phryne.
  • Slave Collar: When she's trapped in the Ishtar Familia, she wears a collar that is a magic item that lets Ishtar know where she is. After Ishtar is defeated, Bell can easily destroy the collar.
  • Status Buff: Her Uchide no Kozuchi spell gives a temporary power-up to the receiver. In an universe where Anti-Grinding is in earnest, this is as close as a Story-Breaker Power as one can be, to the point that Ishtar wonders why it could have been legal in the first place.
  • Support Party Member: She's Level One, so she serves this role by default in the Hestia Familia. That said, you could hardly ask for a better one, since she has the ability to Level Up adventurers using her Uchide no Kozuchi spell. As a note, even a single level is a huge power boost, to the point that beating someone just one level higher is incredibly difficult. Thus, she takes the very concept of a Status Buff up a notch, making her an immensely valuable ally. After all, the fact that she has such a powerful ability is why Hestia Familia could not just buy her off in the first place!
  • Targeted Human Sacrifice: Since she is a renart, her magic can be used to make a magic item with her power, called a Killing Stone. The Ishtar Familia was planning to sacrifice Haruhime's soul to the Killing Stone so that her power could be used to level up their members to take on the Freya Familia. The ritual failed twice due to the Killing Stone being destroyed, first by Aisha and then by Bell, before Haruhime's soul could be absorbed by it.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: A bit of a sad take on it. Haruhime always loved the stories of the hero saving the Damsel in Distress, but after being sold as a prostitute to the Ishtar Familia, she sees herself as a filthy being as prostitutes were always devious figures in the tales she loved and that's why she insists Bell shouldn't bother saving her. That is, despite her never having actually sold her body.
  • Unexpected Virgin: Unbelievable as it is, Haruhime is still a virgin despite being a sex worker for quite a while. As it turns out, she would always get so nervous when she got a customer, she'd end up fainting and foaming from the mouth before the men could do anything to her.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: A gentle, demure, and well-mannered young woman from the Far East who wears a kimono and is very devoted to the Hestia Familia once she joins them.
