Go To

The main heroes of Blossoming Trail initially consisting of a girl, a talking dog and a living book and later gaining two more members, who all are excited for the adventures that lay ahead of them and later tasks themselves to stop the Apex. They later obtain two more members in an engineer and a half-turtle girl.

In Voyage of Wisteria, the girl and talking dog have returned home and add a boy with a bandaged hand and a music note. At the end of Act 2, they become rebranded as "Travelers of Wisteria".

Warnings: Unmarked Spoilers for Blossoming Trail

    General
  • Advice Backfire: The original group gave solid advice to Chloe, but not only did they do so in a way meant for a mature adult and not an impressionable ten-year-old girl, but did so in a way that made her issues worsen rather than get better.
  • Badass Crew:
    • The initial group consisted of: a girl with proficient use of a donut holer like she's up at bat and a creative mind, a swift and nimble corgi king, a living book who can transform himself into whatever he wishes and a senior engineer.
    • In Voyage of Wisteria, in addition to Lexi and Amelia, we have a plucky human clone of Amelia's deceased husband, an emotionally adrift boy with two Water- and Fire-powered Pokémon, and a tiny, mostly mute music note.
  • The Band Minus the Face: Voyage of Wisteria sees the Red Lotus become this after Chloe leaves the Train, with Amelia taking over as its leader.
  • Berserk Button: In general, they are very close with one another, and hurting one of them will swiftly lead to the others retaliating in kind. But on an individual level:
    • Chloe personally has a dislike for curry and Pokémon, due to the years of emotional baggage attached with those things, being called a princess and anything that has to do with Goh, Ash or her father. Also do not hurt her brother in any way else she will bludgeon you to death with a paint bucket.
    • Atticus is attached to his little crown and taking it is just asking for the King of Corginia to chase you down. He also does not like it when figures of authority do nothing to address glaring problems in their car or how apathetic the Apex are to his friends.
    • Lexi, due to spending the past few years of his life consciously buried alive thanks to Grace and Simon, absolutely detests most passengers (or "free-riders", as he calls them) as a result. Especially the two who did it to him. Also don't you dare try to hurt his father or the books in his home.
      • In Voyage of Wisteria, another thing that can set him off is anyone slandering Chloe's name, intentionally or innocently; this is a major reason why he holds a grudge against Goh, who did slander her name in the past.
    • Amelia's major ones include insulting the Unfinished Car — as it was a car she built to recreate her life with Alrich — and anyone hurting Chloe and Hazel, who she sees as her daughters.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: The initial trio are friendly individuals, but push them into a corner and just watch the carnage that can ensue.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: The original trio has Lexi the big, Chloe the thin, and Atticus the short (justified since he is a dog).
  • Broken Pedestal: The interview with Vox and Dahlia end up revealing how they essentially enabled Chloe's toxic traits, giving their reputation quite a hit.
  • The Chosen One: Olmec explains to the original Trio that One-One has chosen them to put an end to the Apex.
  • The Corrupter: As Voyage of Wisteria would eventually reveal, their "advice" to Chloe actually caused her issues to worsen to the point that she spiraled deeper into her anger and spite because of it, which lead to her making several questionable decisions that would lead to the Unown Incident back in Vermillion City.
  • Commonality Connection: For the initial Trio/Quarto.
    • They all love stories. Atticus likes to share the stories of his kingdom and reads classic novels, Chloe is an avid reader and writer of horror literature, and Lexi loves listening to and recording the tales of those he encounters on the train. It's this connection that has Chloe start thinking how she can get into Pokémon; by researching stories and legends involving them.
    • They are all eager to explore the train, albeit for different reasons: Atticus wants to experience the thrill of one more adventure, Chloe desires to reinvent herself though the journey, and Lexi wishes to record and catalog whatever happens on the way and hopefully get revenge on the two "free-riders" that injured him. Downplayed with Amelia who originally used the Train to recreate her life with Alrick and currently explores the Train for traces of corrupted code.
    • All of them are unable to forgive someone's actions from the past: Chloe can't forgive her father or friend for abandoning her, Atticus is unwilling to let Amelia go for all the trouble she caused on the train (he later lets go of it), and Lexi actively wants revenge on Grace and Simon. They later learn to move on from these actions.
    • And last, they don't like injustices of any kind. Chloe is angry at how unfair it is that she's been bullied, Atticus talked Emperor Neapolitan over how the penguin did nothing to stop Nico's bullying problems, Lexi feels like free-riders get it easy for all the chaos they create and Amelia herself shows little esteem for the Apex.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • The four want to take down the Apex, but they don't want the kids to die and then have their souls repurposed as denizens.
Atticus: You [Olmec] want a bunch of children to be killed off to become ghosts and roam around hurting other people?!
Olmec: Do you wish for the Apex to continue as they are?
Lexi: We all don't want that. Scare them? Yes. Murder them? No.
    • Both Atticus and Lexi disapprove of Chloe saying that she will run away again unless everyone apologizes to her, giving her disappointed looks when Parker reminds her of it.
    • None of them give The Cat any ounce of pity for how she abandoned Simon to a Ghom, had every chance to back for him, allowed himself to kill and injure Nulls and never told him that the numbers were supposed to go down.
  • Famed In-Story: In Blossoming Trail Act 2, the original trio are becoming more well-known for how they are rallying troops to stop the Apex. By the finale of Blossoming Trail, the Canals of Fondue Car is preparing statues of the heroes in their honor. Voyage of Wisteria reveals that this fanfare is a commonplace celebration, and One-One even created a car in honor of Chloe.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The fight in The Midnight Car establishes the dynamic:
    • Fighter: Chloe as the Token Human who fights with a steel pipe (or rather, donut holer) she calls Cheshire.
    • Mage: Lexi as a Paper Master who himself is made of the stuff, being able to shapeshift into any form in addition to controlling paper in general to do whatever he wants.
    • Thief: Atticus as the swift and nimble corgi who isn't afraid to bite and snarl at opponents and uses his small size to trip others up.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Downplayed; while Atticus and Chloe were already close before meeting Lexi (and Lexi warmed up to her after being touched by her kindness), they truly don't become true friends until The Midnight Car when they fight off The Erl-King and his band of hunters. Amelia truly doesn't become part of the group until after she helps fight off CarnEvil alongside the original trio.
  • Flower Motifs: The lotus flower, which represents growth and rebirth.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Chloe/Hazel - Sanguine
    • Atticus/Warbler - Phlegmatic
    • Lexi - Choleric
    • Amelia/Goh - Melancholic
  • Freudian Trio: The original trio.
    • Id: Lexi - has a drive to get revenge on the "Free-riders" who damaged him.
    • Ego: Atticus - the eldest and most experienced member of the trio.
    • Superego: Chloe - the Token Human who is quite inquisitive of the train's nature.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: As of the Cyan Desert Car, the Red Lotus Quarto consists of two females (Chloe and Amelia) and two males (Atticus and Lexi). By the end of The Fog Car, it stays the same with Hazel taking Chloe's place which continues in Voyage of Wisteria even after Atticus's departure and Goh being found by the Quarto.
  • Good Wears White: Both Chloe and Lexi initially wear white and are both good-aligned characters.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Zigzagged. Chloe usually smashes ahead with Cheshire but later gains a cloak that lets her breathe fire. Lexi can fold his papers into whatever he wishes so he can either fire them into daggers or slice things in half with sharp blades. Atticus must fight head on — since he is a dog. As for Amelia, she mostly fought off with a gun while in CarnEvil and The Fog Car.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Some of them are worse than others, and some even get some benefit of the doubt, but they still take Chloe's words for granted and believe that what she says is at the very least mostly true. The worst of them, however, is Lexi, who uses Chloe's words about what Goh did to her as justification for his treatment of him in the early Voyage of Wisteria parts.
  • Interspecies Friendship: The original trio's friendship is between a girl, a talking dog and a living book.
  • It's Personal: In Blossoming Trail, all of them have a bone to pick with the Apex. Lexi wants revenge on Grace and Simon for tearing him apart and burying him alive, Atticus needs to find answers to what happened to King Aloysius (because Grace and Simon raided his car), Chloe wants to confront them because they hurt her friends and to stop them from hurting even more denizens and Amelia is disgusted at how her attempts to recreate her life has created a cult, worship her as a God and how they raided the Unfinished Car and have Hazel (her "daughter") in their clutches.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: A platonic example for both Atticus and Lexi towards Chloe.
    • Atticus: He tells Chloe that while he wishes that he could leave the Train to read a copy of her stories and see more of the Pokémon that she talks about, he notes that it's not possible due to his role as King of Corginia. His only request is that Chloe must promise herself to grow, change, remember what the Train taught her and to face the future with a smile on her face.
    • Lexi: He sees Chloe as a being who represents both light and dark (or an angel and witch, as he puts it) and wants nothing more than to see her happy. However in Voyage of Wisteria, while he is glad to see her fine, he's not happy to see her Childhood Friend Goh on the train...
  • Karma Houdini: The rest of the Red Trio/Quartro, such as Lexi, Atticus, and Amelia contributed to Goh's increasing misery by enabling Chloe's worst flaws and toxic behaviors, and encouraging her to burn bridges with Goh despite reading her extremely cruel and abusive text messages. All this led to Goh becoming isolated and vulnerable, and after the Unknown Incident, he attempted suicide. Regardless if they were genuinely unaware of the truth or not, they were just as guilty for hurting Goh as Chloe is, yet they were never punished for it... until Voyage of Wisteria, where Lexi is finally called out by Goh for treating him like dirt over something that happened long ago, and being obsessed with his "precious" Chloe to the point of demonizing anyone he believes wronged his friend.
  • Legendary in the Sequel: In Voyage of Wisteria, the group has become celebrities for how they helped defeat the Apex with people posting tributes, fan-art, costumes and other things as a thanks.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • While only one of the members of the Red Lotus Trio actually wears anything red (Atticus's crown), and none of them boast any flower iconography, lotus flowers represent self-growth and rebirth, which is the purpose of Chloe's journey. In-story, Chloe chose the name because it's a reminder of how the group came together, as Atticus gave her the title of "Chloe of the Vermilion" at first meeting, and because looking at lotus flowers in the park is one of the few positive memories she associates with said hometown.
    • Take the first letter of each member of the original Quarto will give "Cala" which could be based on the Calla Lilies, symbols of regeneration, rebirth and triumph.
  • Meaningful Rename: After Amelia joins the group, the trio names themselves the Red Lotus Quatro, which stays that way when Chloe leaves and Hazel takes her place and continues when Atticus departs and Goh arrives. At the end of Voyage of Wisteria Act 2, Goh decides to change the name of their group to "Travelers of Wisteria".
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between:
    • For the initial group: Atticus is the Nice for being a kind and caring corgi king, Lexi is the Mean for his hatred of passengers and not mincing words about them, and Chloe and Amelia arethe In-between since the former is a sweet girl who nevertheless struggles with issues of resentment while Amelia is a Defrosting Ice Queen who can be quite blunt when the situation calls for it.
    • In the current group, Hazel and Warbler are the Nice (the former being a curious but caring Cheerful Child, and the latter being a much kinder reincarnation of Grace Monroe); Lexi remains the Mean for his initial grudge against Goh and anyone who would slander Chloe's name; and Amelia and Goh are the more neutral In-betweens (Amelia continuing to be the Team Mom of the group, and Goh for slowly re-developing his self-esteem and becoming more compassionate, but still having moments of self-doubt).
  • Non-Indicative Name: While Red Lotus Trio/Quarto fits them symbolically, it doesn't literally, since not only is Atticus the only one who wears anything red — until Chloe and Lexi obtain red items for themselves — but none of them have flowers on them, let alone an actual Red Lotus.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: Ironically enough, after Chloe's family had run afoul of this trope in numerous ways, her newest friends fell into the trap themselves in the exact opposite way. Whenever Chloe vented to them about her problems at home, Lexi, Atticus and Amelia treated her complaints with dead seriousness and advised her as they would a fully matured adult. After all, most of the issues she exposed to them stemmed from being sidelined as a "supporting character" in her own life, and absolutely no one treating her as her own person- surely, as her friends, they had to step up where her world had failed her, right? Unfortunately, when viewed from an objective perspective, Chloe actually was exaggerating the severity of her situation. She was conflating a legitimate bullying issue at school with some typical childhood communication issues at home and a friend with wildly different interests and No Social Skills, to make it seem like there was a full-blown conspiracy to keep her as miserable as possible. By treating Chloe with absolute trust and faith in her maturity, the Red Lotus Quarto inadvertently worsened the issue by reinforcing that Chloe was right to run away from home, that she would be fully within her rights to sever all her relationships, and encouraging her to make demands of her friends and family to ensure their sincerity.
  • No Sympathy: Throughout the Fog Car, no one shares a tear for Grace, even after she's realized how much she screwed up. Justified in this case, considering all the atrocities that she and the Apex committed on the Train and onto them.
    • When they learn about what happened to her in Voyage of Wisteria, however, this sentiment becomes zig-zagged among the group members.
  • Positive Friend Influence: They help each other grow and change their negative thinking.
    • Chloe: Her kindness and patience with Lexi helps temper his desire for blood and she's quick to understand why Atticus kept his concerns about the Apex attacking The Unfished Car secret. She even forgives Amelia and tells her that she's on the route of redemption, which is probably a big factor as to why Amelia decides to join the Red Lotus Trio.
    • Atticus: He holds a lot of wisdom that helps Chloe be able to see things differently and take the first steps to become a different person. For Lexi, he becomes a secondary father figure.
    • Lexi: Boosts Chloe's self-confidence to help her move on from the past and pain of Goh pushing her away and to let her embrace her hobbies as a part of her instead of something to be ashamed of but will also put his foot down when Chloe is acting out of control. He also consoles Atticus over the doubts he has over his friend (King Aloysius) gone missing.
    • Amelia: Acts as a voice of reason and cheers Chloe up for how she's bloomed so quickly is quick to make jokes with Atticus and can sympathize with Lexi on his troubles, she also gets to bury the hatchet with Atticus.
  • Power Trio: The founding members are a group of three who are off to see what the train has in store for them.
  • The Quest: The end of the Crayon Car has the trio decide what their destiny is going to be — find the Apex and either get vengeance for hurting him (Lexi), answers for what happened to one of their friends (Atticus) or at least stop them from doing more damage (Chloe). Olmec later tell them that One-One has specifically tasked them to end the Apex. Arc 2 has Amelia on her own mission: get Hazel to safety before Grace and Simon learn the truth about her. In the sequel story, their main mission is to find Goh and get him to safety before toppling Ogami and his Evil Plan.
  • Post-Support Regret: After Vox and Dahlia reveal Chloe's mean streak before entering the Train, the team's left utterly horrified at the fact that their attempts to support Chloe ultimately came off as them enabling her bad habits, causing her to take much longer to finish her journey than intended.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits:
    • The initial trio consists of a girl from a world of superpowered monsters who has a fascination with demons and wields a steel pipe she insists on calling a "donut holer" as a weapon, a talking dog who is the latest in a long line of canine royalty, and a book with a humanoid form based off a "Specter" who likes gryphons and can fold his body into whatever he feels like. The later members include a 60-year-old engineer and "former" Conductor and a Cheerful Child who is part-turtle and the daughter of said engineer.
    • In Voyage of Wisteria, later members include said girl's former friend from the Pokémon world, his two Water- and Fire- type Pokémon companions, and a music note that is the reincarnation of the Apex founder.
  • Red Is Heroic: They're the Red Lotus Trio, the good guys. By the time they enter the Cyan Desert Car, they start wearing the color to signify their allegiance: Atticus's crown, Chloe's hair and cloak, Lexi's scarf and later yukata, and Amelia settles with a red origami flower.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Lexi and Hazel are Red, Atticus, Amelia and Goh are Blue and Chloe herself is a mixture of both.
  • Save the Villain: Upon learning what the Cage of Flauros will do, the Quarto decide to save the Apex rather than trap them within to be slaughtered.
  • Tarot Motifs: As revealed by the author:
    • Chloe - Queen of Wands (Upright), representing courage, confidence and determination that she has obtained over the course of her adventure. The Wands is Fire Element, which befits her fire motif for the Arc. The author originally wanted Queen of Swords but the donut holer was more a blunt weapon than a slashing one. (Queen of Swords would go to Grace).
    • Atticus - The Emperor (Upright), self-explanatory as he is a wise male figure who gives advice.
    • Lexi - Ten of Swords (Inverted), being a victim of abuse who is slowly moving on from the torture to defend himself.
    • Amelia - Three of Cups, originally Inverted to express being a loner and independent, now upright to symbolizing obtaining allies. The Cups is represented via water, which contrasts Chloe's fire.
  • Theme Naming: Surprisingly, the names of the original trio have Greek origins: Chloe is based on the word for "blooming", Atticus is of someone from Athens, and Lexi is derived from Alexander, which means "defender of man".
  • Three Plus Two: The initial trio was Chloe, Atticus and Lexi and they later add Amelia, Hazel and Goh with Hazel and Goh replacing Chloe and Atticus when they depart.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: not intentionally, but Vox and Dahlia's interview re-contextualizes their support and encouragement of Chloe as them enabling her toxic behavior.
  • True Companions: The original group becomes this very quickly. They're very close and comfort one another in regard to their pasts and insecurities, and Chloe even states at one point that Lexi and Atticus are her rocks and would be devastated if anything happened to them. Chloe and later Atticus extends a hand to Amelia to join them, which she reciprocates.

Founding Members

    Chloe Cerise

"This is my story... And I wanna see how it goes..."

A girl from Vermilion City who is the daughter of Professor Cerise. However, unlike most children who wish to become Pokémon trainers, she wants nothing to do with Pokémon at all and is tired of everyone and everything reminding her of that or ignoring her in favor of these creatures. After a horrible day at school and at her father's lab, she runs away and ends up on the Infinity Train on an adventure to reinvent herself, stay away from home as far as possible, and topple the Apex.

See here for more tropes about her.

    Atticus
"Don't try to rush into it so quickly. The last passenger [Tulip] who came to this car was like you [Chloe], trying to rush into things, not sure what to do. But you can't rush things; sometimes you just need to try."

The King of Corginia, Uniter of the Pembrokes and Cardigans, Atticus is one of Chloe's partners on her journeys across the Infinity Train. Having already helped out "Tulip the Literate" in the past, he requests to join Chloe again for one more adventure and hopes to find out what has happened to a friend of his.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: He tells Amelia that his Car hosts plays of his adventure with Tulip. Amelia questions if they recreate the scene of how Amelia shot him and turned him into a Ghom and Atticus actually laughs at that.
  • Advice Backfire: Atticus tells Chloe to only forgive people if they deserve it. Chloe then states in her texts to her father and Goh to f off and culminates in the email of threatening to return to the Train if no one has changed in the slighest. Whoops.
  • Arranged Marriage: After the Apex is done, he gets at least nine marriage proposals.
  • Ascended Extra: Out of Book 1's protagonists, he had the least amount of importance to the plot with "The Ball Pit Car" being his only focus (and even then, he turned into a Ghom and was out for the final two episodes). He gains his own arc in the story as he tries to deal with the idea that King Aloysius and the Unfinished Car may have been destroyed by the Apex.
  • Back for the Finale: He leaves the group early on in Wisteria but returns for the Darkest Day arc, in giant size and leading a (literally) giant army of corgis.
  • Badass Adorable: He's an adorable corgi but he was willing to fight off against the Steward and Conductor if it meant saving his people and will also chase down a hunter who took off with his crown without mercy.
  • Battle Cry: "CORGINIA!!!!"
  • But Now I Must Go: In "Voyage of Wisteria", once he returns to Corginia, he ultimately decides that he has to stay in his car and return to his responsibilities.
  • Canine Companion: Was this to Tulip when she first entered the Train and is currently this for Chloe and Lexi.
  • Character Development: He initially had no good feelings for Amelia — albeit justified as the Steward under her control was attacking his car and she shot him in the face to spite Tulip — and banned her from ever entering his car. He later warms up to her, is the one who gives the invitation for Amelia to join the Red Lotus Trio and by the time he's back in Corginia, he's allowed Amelia to enter without worry and protects her when Oliver states otherwise.
  • Cool Crown: Wears one to signify his status as King of the Corginians. Stealing it is one of his Berserk Buttons. This is spoofed in when he wishes for a new makeover for himself, and Amelia gives him a large gaudy paper crown in response. In Voyage of Wisteria he doesn't like having to wear something over it but only has to, so he and the Quarto blend in with the numerous cosplayers filling the Canals of Fondue Car at that point.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The tail end of the Crayon Car and the Canals of Fondue Car bring up some struggles he has over whether or not Aloysius is alive. The return to Corginia in Voyage of Wisteria is focused on him completing trials to regain his throne.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When Chloe is slamming her head on a desk when she can't think of a story to write in Azada after three days, he dryly remarks that she's reacting as if the world was going to end.
  • Does Not Like Spam: In a case of irony, Corginia plants onions even though onions and anything of their like are poisonous to dogs — they're planted in memory of Tulip. In fact, Atticus has an entire list of things he can't stomach. When Chloe and Atticus fight through the Rickety Town level of CarnEvil he reveals that he hates peppermint and candy canes.
  • Easily Forgiven: After learning about how Atticus has had a theory that King Aloysius and his car was destroyed by the Apex, Chloe doesn't get angry at him for keeping it secret but does warn him that she'll write a story about a corgi king eaten by a hungry demon next time. Lexi also lets go of his anger as he understands that Atticus was only trying to protect Lexi himself from his own tragic past.
  • Experienced Protagonist: He's been through one adventure already, so he knows how the Train works and the significance of the number on Chloe's hand.
  • Famed In-Story: There's a statue of him and Tulip in Corginia commemorating his adventures to return the "true" Conductor to their throne.
  • Flower Motif: Red tulips; not only are they a reminder of his friend Tulip Olsen (who had red-orange hair) but they represent love which is the fondness Atticus has for his friends. When Chloe and Atticus bathe in the Crayon Car, Chloe draws an image of Atticus and a red tulip on the bathtub.
  • Genre Savvy: He is worried that Henry and Walter's Evil Plan may backfire as dark rituals always seem to backfire in some way. He's absolutely correct.
  • Heroic Dog: He's a noble corgi who helped stopped the Conductor and fought off the Steward. He also will help fight off The Wild Hunt after one hunter snatched his crown.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Aside from his friendships with Tulip and Chloe, he's this with King Aloysius, a tortoise, in the Unfinished Car.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Didn't know that Atticus got shot by The Conductor in Book 1? You do now.
  • The Magnificent: As noted, his full title is "Atticus, King of the Corginians, and Uniter of the Cardigans and the Pembrokes". He also gives titles like this to others, such as "Chloe of the Vermilion", "Lexi, Chronicler of the Infinity", and "Amelia the Artificer". He later earns the title "Atticus the Wise" after winning the Royal Corginian Trials.
  • Mister Exposition: Atticus summarizes his adventures with Tulip to Chloe when she enters the Corgi Car, covering every major plot point of that season and catching the reader up on what's happened since Book 1 ended.
  • My Instincts Are Showing: Like in the show, he still acts very much like a corgi who likes belly rubs and can't stand being picked up.
  • Nice Guy: Takes Chloe on a tour of Corginia, has his fellow corgis whip up a feast for her, a place to sleep and is willing to join her on an adventure throughout the train. He's also willing to lend an ear whenever Chloe needs advice. He later extends this to Goh when he finally arrives on the train.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Does not like being picked up, but makes an exception when Chloe carries him away from Lexi and Titus fighting.
    • The fact that he requests Emperor Neapolitan to lift his crown, which chapters prior shows that he dislikes that, is a hint that something is up. Indeed, he kept some of Lexi's papers inside which turn into birds ready to rip the Emperor penguin into shreds if he doesn't fess up why he let the bullying on Nicocontinued.
    • He is shown to be quite sullen and irritable during the Crayon Car and Canals of Fondue Car, mostly due to the concern on whether King Aloysius is still alive is on his mind.
    • Has no kind words to say at all to the Apex when he hears how they would rather steal his Pendant of Life to resurrect Sean but let Chloe — who just fell out of the sky from Simon and died — to rot all because she ruined their "fun".
    • In general, he rarely raises his voice. If he does, that's a cause for concern.
  • Parental Substitute: He acts more like a father figure than Professor Cerise is to Chloe, despite being a corgi. While he encourages her to start getting into Pokémon by having it to related to what she likes, Professor Cerise keeps going into denial and refuses to change his mind over his daughter's hobbies.
  • Put on a Bus: After going through the Royal Corginia trials in Voyage of Wisteria, he decides to return to his duties.
  • Quizzical Tilt: Does this during his dinner with Chloe to goad her to eating onions, much like he used this to Tulip in "The Unfinished Car" to let him talk to King Aloysius.
  • Rage Breaking Point:
    • Snaps at Chloe in The Canals of Fondue Car, when she keeps bringing up (grape) jelly. This is because a grape jelly puddle was one of the features of the Unfinished Car and he's concerned about Aloysius's fate. Thankfully he apologizes as Chloe honestly didn't know better.
    • Does this again after he learns how Grace and Simon were about to wheel MT (Tulip's mirror counterpart) back in Book 2.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He's a king and willing to join Chloe on her adventures on the train. This gets deconstructed later: when he returns to Corginia, Oliver points out that he left behind his responsibilities to go traveling and could've left the corgis leaderless and vulnerable to the likes of the Apex. Atticus admits that Oliver has a point and decides to stay in Corginia.
  • Secretly Selfish: Somewhat; he joined Chloe out of the desire to have another adventure, but also noted that he wanted to give her company. Lexi also accuses him of latching onto her as a form of self-protection against the Apex after learning that Atticus suspects that they destroyed The Unfinished Car. Oliver also brings this up when he returns to Corginia that he was risking all of Corginia from outside dangers for his own fun.
  • Shown Their Work:
    • Atticus plants onions in Corginia but doesn't eat them. Onions are hazardous to dogs' health. From this point on, Chloe cooks or orders food and omits onion (and later garlic). The Dim Sum feast in the Crayon Car has him state an entire list of what he can't eat.
    • When Lexi shows off how he designed the walls of their room in the Hotel Crayola with shades of purple, Atticus sees it as more of a blue-grey. Dogs can't see red or green.
  • Talking Animal: He's a corgi capable of human speech.
  • Team Dad: Being the oldest member of the trio — Chloe is ten years old, while Lexi is (at least emotionally) a teenager — and thus the one who keeps everyone together with his advice. Even with Amelia, who is at least 60, he still is the voice of reason out of all of the original Quarto.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Meatballs. His dinner with Chloe is a bowl of turkey meatballs and Chloe specifically makes meatball soup in Azada so he can join in.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After confessing why Atticus wished to join Chloe on her quest, Lexi accuses Atticus of selfishly withholding critical information regarding the Apex from Chloe and exploiting her ignorance. Atticus replies that he was more concerned that if Chloe had known about such problems from the start, it might have discouraged her from embarking on her journey. Thankfully both Chloe and Lexi are forgiving once they understand his intentions.

    Lexi

Lexi

"It's not fair! We're supposed to help free-riders when all they [Grace and Simon] did was pretend to go along with the trials and then throw us away after we wore away our novelty?"

A living book and the son of Titus from the Library of Flying Books Car who was trapped underground for years and only unearthed when Chloe entered his car. After Chloe frees him, he is tasked by his father to accompany her on her journey, in an attempt to know her better and to get revenge on the 'free-riders' who buried him alive.
In Voyage of Wisteria, with his original goal done, he is now tasked with helping Goh get back on his feet.

  • Achilles' Heel: As a paper person, he can't go near fire. This ends up Played for Drama when he tries to rescue Chloe from Simon (who has just turned into a dragon) but is unable to save her from falling to her death.
  • Action Survivor: Several years being trapped underground has left him way out of his depth with the number of new Cars that have been created since then. He still manages to pull his weight around.
  • Advice Backfire: Twice which he notes later on in Voyage of Wisteria.
    • His advice for Chloe to deal with Goh was to let him go, believing she shouldn't waste her effort feeling anything for somebody who doesn't notice her. Chloe takes this to mean she should ignore him entirely, deleting his messages even as they come in droves.
    • Later, upon realizing Chloe took the message wrong, he clarifies that she should bid him an actual farewell rather than straight up ignore him, as that would only exacerbate the issue. When Chloe eventually does call him, their equal inability to properly express their feelings causes her to burn her bridges with him and end things in a rather bitter tone, which has the side effect of starting Goh's Sanity Slippage.
  • Alien Blood: As a book, he bleeds ink instead of blood. Then he starts bleeding red ink when significantly angered.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: You wouldn't know about it at first glance because he prefers to cosplay as Spectre/Chloe's "Specter of the Black Forest", but he's actually a sentient book and just detaches his papers to assume a human form. Chloe usually keeps his book in her backpack for safe keeping until she returns home, and the book is kept within his paper body.
  • And I Must Scream: He was a sentient book that was crippled and buried underground for eight years due to Grace and Simon's machinations.
  • And Then What?: With Chloe off the Train and The Apex done for, Lexi has the hardest time out of the team trying to figure out what to do with his life, especially since he has no interest in returning to Azada and his complicated feelings for Chloe begin to surface.
  • Badass Bookworm: Probably the best example of this trope being taken to its logical conclusion, since not only is he a capable fighter, but he's literally a book that's well versed in literature.
  • Badass Creed: States this to the Erlking:
"We are the Red Lotus Trio. And we are off in search of our own prey...our destinies!"
  • Belated Love Epiphany: He only ends up learning he likes Chloe as more than a friend after she has already completed her Train trip and returned home.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Is smitten by Chloe for her kindness, easily forgiving him for what was an honest mistake, and how she unearthed him after so long. Deconstructed unfortunately, this eventually leads him to put her on a pedestal like many other characters, ignoring her flaws while demonizing anybody who tries to argue otherwise.
  • Birds of a Feather: He and Chloe get along very well, with their love of macabre stories and the fact that they have similar backgrounds.
  • The Blank: He has no facial features when he first obtains a humanoid form of his own. This changes when Chloe dresses him up a chapter later.
  • Break the Cutie: He was torn apart and electrocuted by Simon before being buried underground where he stayed for eight years.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The brooding boy to Chloe's gentle girl as aside from his eagerness to explore other cars, he's still hurt and angry from being tortured and separated from his father.
  • The Bully: He's way too eager to hurt Goh, the person he's supposed to protect under Chloe's request, for things that nobody really cares about anymore.
  • Buried Alive: Was buried in the ground for eight years by Grace and Simon. More specifically, when Titus wondered where his son went to, it turned out his son never even left Azada; he was just a few feet away.
  • Bullying the Disabled: Given what's eventually revealed about Goh possibly suffering from depression, this retroactively turns Lexi's horrible treatment of him into this.
  • Character Development: Voyage of Wisteria has his arc focused on fully letting go of his traumas from Grace and Simon and his biases that were filtered from Chloe's time on the train.
  • Character Shilling: Chloe made him out to be a very good person whenever she spoke about him, to the point she tells Goh he can trust Lexi as well as the rest of the quarto, and when Denizens talk about him, it's normally in awe about him. In practice, however, Lexi is a Jerkass to anybody he doesn't like, and even with those he's friendly with, he's only friendly with them and keeps his distance from everybody else. And the less we talk about the way he treats Goh early into Voyage of Wisteria, the better.
  • Child Hater: He utterly detests The Apex, which is composed mostly of children, and spares no expenses to the 10-year-old Goh when given the order to look after him on his train trip.
  • Claustrophobia: As a result of being Buried Alive, he obtained this. It's mentioned that the Red Lotus Trio once slept in a drawer of a giant dresser, but Lexi started to freak out when it closed shut.
  • Color Motif: White, which is associated with the color of paper. He also is known to wear a white suit and has ashen grey hair. He later changes to the red that is associated with the Red Lotus Trio.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Will throw papers in the face of the enemy as a tactic.
  • Composite Character:
    • In an Alice in Wonderland standpoint, he combines aspects of both the Gryphon (as it's his favorite mystical creature) and White Knight (for being one of the nicest characters to Alice).
    • In a VRAINS sense, his physical appearance is based off Specter, but he has the past of Yusaku Fujiki — tortured by an unseen group for years and now his main motivation is to take them down along with having feelings for a female associated with water (Aoi/Skye Zaisen).
  • Cooldown Hug: Gives one to Chloe as she goes through stage fright on having to read a story for the Sorbet Sharks — as it reminds her of how her classmates like to mock her for her tastes — before telling her that she's going to be amazing on stage.
  • Creator In-Joke: Author notes reveals that Lexi's first appearance is based on Specter because the author told a friend that Specter has more good qualities than Simon (loyalty being his biggest one).
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Chloe gives him blue eyes that sparkle — due to using a glitter gel pen — that makes him look quite uncanny. Not that Chloe minds, though. She thinks it just adds to his charm.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: A sentient book that uses his shapeshifting powers to cosplay as a Yu-Gi-Oh character doesn't sound like a big problem. A big weirdo, maybe, but not a problem. However, outside of Chloe, he's easily the most violent of the group and will quickly get physical if provoked.
  • Cuteness Proximity: He coos over a red jaguar cub in The Hidden Temple Car and cuddles it until the mother appears before him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was supposed to be a denizen partner to Simon, but Simon ripped him apart and electrocuted in order to increase his number. Then Grace and Simon buried him underground while he screamed for help, leaving him trapped there for eight years.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Can make fold his papers into razor-sharp blades to slice opponents in a tornado of paper.
  • Disappointed in You:
    • Since Chloe's busy trying to get her mind cleared up, Lexi's the one who lets Parker know that she's disappointed in how far he took things in order to get her back.
    • While it's not verbally stated, he's placed on the receiving end of this from his father in Voyage of Wisteria, as his crusade against the Apex and his remembrance of Chloe causes him to devolve into a furious prick who's willing to hurt anybody just to get his own catharsis, just like Parker.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • The way he treats Goh and how Chloe talks about him bring to mind an obssessive boyfriend; while he's perfectly fine with Chloe and those she's friendly with, he keeps his distance with everybody else, and when Goh enters the Train, Lexi does everything in his power to make him miserable and suffer for many things that people have long forgotten about.
    • A later chapter in Wisteria reveals his age to be 20 in "book years". While we have no idea how the hell this translates to human years, this means that in at least one interpretation, he's an adult who's crushing on a 10 year old girl.
  • Draconic Humanoid: His Blossoming Trail late Arc 2/3 attire makes him look like a dragon, or rather a kyorinrin as Chloe explains. In the first part of Voyage of Wisteria, he's in this form as a request from Chloe so that Goh doesn't freak out if he's dressed as Specter because it'll remind the boy of Zeno.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Chloe eventually shuffles his papers around in order for his form to resemble a Kyorinrin: basically, a mythical dragon youkai made of paper.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap:
    • Being a book who has written down second-hand accounts of cars that previous passengers encountered would essentially make him a guide for every challenge that comes their way. But since he's been stuck underground for eight years, and that there are so many cars to begin with, he probably wouldn't be of much use anyhow.
    • The end of Act 2 has him remember he can turn into a gryphon and just fly over many cars to get to the Fog Car. The only reason this didn't work is that there were Ghoms overhead.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: Lexi falls into this for Chloe because not only is she the first person he's seen in eight years after being stuck in the ground, but because he can tell how sincere and kind she can really be. This eventually gets deconstructed when he begins putting Chloe on a pedestal as a result, even after seeing her nasty side.
  • Easily Forgiven:
    • Chloe and Atticus hold no qualms for how he accidentally burns her, with Chole herself reasoning that she should've been the one to pay attention to where she put the tea kettle. When it comes to his father's punishment for him, it turns out that he must travel with Chloe, emphasizing how everyone knew it was an honest mistake.
    • Voyage of Wisteria doesn't forgive him so easily, though. While Goh and the rest of the group decide to let his jerkish attitude early into the story be bygones, they make it clear they won't easily brush off the damage he did as a result, and they keep him at arms' length as a result of it.
  • Endearingly Dorky: When he's not brooding over how he wants revenge on Grace and Simon, he's shown to be dorky and shy around Chloe and how he gets to know her. He's also known to be quite flustered when he finds out he has plenty of fangirls chasing after him which is why in the beginning of Voyage of Wisteria, he's currently in his kyorinrin form (that and Chloe had specific instructions that Lexi not be in the Black Forest form due to Goh on the Train and fear of the form bringing up bad memories.)
  • Establishing Character Moment: After being found by Chloe and fixed up by his Titus, it shows him bitterly lashing out at his father and insists on getting vengeance for all his pain, before being immediately hit with remorse after he accidentally injures Chloe in the midst of his wrath. The next chapter shows his more vulnerable dorky side.
  • Expy:
    • His initial human form is essentially what happens if you dragged Specter onto the Infinity Train (which, hilariously, Specter is on the train in Knight of the Orange Lily). Word of God states that she wants Billy Bob Thompson (who voiced Specter in VRAINS' dub) to be his voice actor.
    • Initial author notes state that he was also based off the wizard Malchior from the Teen Titans episode "Spellbound". One reader even imagined Lexi as Malchior wearing Specter's suit and having a similar hairstyle.
    • His origami abilities and his gentle personality comes from Olivia (the author was watching a lot of videos and listening to the OST of The Origami King when she was writing the first few chapters of Blossoming Trail)
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Lexi hates the Apex for their actions, but he considers the idea of denizens wanting to murder the Apex and repurpose their souls for their own use as going too far.
    • Lexi has an understandable hatred for Grace for betraying him and leaving him buried alive for years, trapped just a few feet away from his father. Even with Simon dead and Grace gone in the sequel, he can't let it go since neither of them (particularly Grace) didn't apologize for the trauma they gave him. He initially lets go of his hatred of Simon by his father's urging, but when he learns that Grace was murdered, he did not openly say it was a good thing, as some of her former victims or people who are just as horrible as her (Mad Ben and Kisaragi) got joy from the Apex leader's Karmic Death. Later, when Lexi learns that Hazel, Lucy, and Toby build a small memorial for Grace, at first angry, he was surprised when they said they were afraid he would destroy the memorial (since it's shown that he shattered Grace and Simon's photo in Azada). Reflecting on this, Lexi decides to offer a tribute to Grace and moves on from his hatred.
  • Fantastic Slur: He calls passengers, specifically those who charm denizens only to later hurt or kill them, "free-riders".
  • Female Gaze: A variant, the narration likes to mention how Chloe likes staring at him...but rather because of all of the stories that compose his pages and how kind and gentle he can be.
  • Flower Motif: The Author's notes reveal that his favorite flowers are sweet peas. Sweet peas represent happiness which is how he feels over finally accomplishing his dream of entering the Train and being with Chloe. Fittingly, sweet peas are also the birth flower for April and he's an Aries.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Goh more or less forgives him for how he lashed out at him early into Voyage of Wisteria, but neither he nor the rest of the Red Lotus are willing to forget how much damage he did, and could've done, as a result of it. Lexi, for his part, accepts it and works to better himself.
  • Freaky Is Cool: Aside from Chloe's kindness, he's intrigued by her because of her darker leanings, macabre tastes and untapped potential in writing. Whenever she doubts her likes, he will immediately advise her to make it as part of herself and to not care what others think.
  • Freudian Excuse: When Lexi left his home, the Library of Flying Books Car, on his first adventure, he was betrayed by his partners Grace and Simon, who he thought were his friends, and spend years buried alive. Chloe Cerise found him, rescued him, forgave him for accidentally getting her shoulder struck with hot water, was a shoulder for her to cry on, and struck a kinship with her.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Lexi is called out by his actions by Amelia and his father, Titus, in this regard. Amelia told him that he's not the only one that misses Chloe and has no right to lash out at anyone. Titus also disapproves of Lexi's treatment of Goh and encourages him to let go of his hatred of Grace and Simon now that they're gone. Unfortunately, Lexi ignores both Amelia and Titus' words, only letting go of his hatred of Simon while still hating Grace until Hazel and the Apex kids give him a Jerkass Realization over their Due to the Dead to Grace.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Becomes a thorough asshole in Voyage of Wisteria, as his untreated anger issues, continued crusade against the Apex and sadness at losing Chloe causes him to devolve into an abrasive Jerkass who nearly mauls someone from getting info on Chloe wrong.
  • Good Is Not Soft: He's usually doing his best to just be a guide and advisor to Chloe. If he gets into a mood that he has no choice but to defend himself, he can be dangerous.
  • Great Big Book of Everything: He himself is a book of the various cars made by the Infinity Train, having dedicated himself to jotting down second-hand accounts of passengers who entered Azada.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Does not like Zack's presence in the Canals of Fondue Car, especially when he calls Chloe "Bad Girl" and agrees to teach her combat skills. In Voyage of Wisteria, it's implied that he hates Goh because of the supposed "friendship" he and Chloe share and yet Goh didn't care to value Chloe as a person, whereas Lexi is utterly in love (or as close to it as you can get for a book) with her and treats her with respect... Or so he thinks. As his actions become analyzed, it becomes clear he's putting Chloe on a pedestal not unlike a certain younger brother of hers, and using her leaving him as an excuse to act like an asshole to Goh.
  • Guyliner: His human form has black ink around the eyes to invoke this. The narration says that Chloe just likes it when guys wear eyeliner.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo:
    • Has short ashen grey hair, is somewhat cold, and is incredibly bitter and vengeful towards "free-riders". In contrast, Chloe has long maroon hair, is working on getting out of her shyness, and can't bring herself to act on her resentment to the same degree.
    • He's a contrast to both Ash and Goh as both are dark-haired boys who are enthusiastic about their goals in life involving Pokémon, yet neither of them really understood or cared to actually understand Chloe's problems or interests. Lexi is somewhat cynical, yet he starts to care and understand Chloe's problems better than those two ever did. And while Goh is "supposedly" Chloe's friend even though he can't even wish her a Happy Birthday and would drop her present at her doorstep, let alone respond to her texts, Lexi truly sees Chloe as an equal, cares for her well-being, constantly gifts her with presents and is willing to dance with her to cheer her up.
    • His white hair makes him a mirror to Zack's ebony locks. Lexi is kind and caring with a vindictive streak against the Apex while Zack is an insane madman on the outside but has noble traits that shows that he's not just a mindless killer on the inside.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: His first piece of advice to Chloe is to move on from Goh because Goh showed no sense of pity or sympathy for her problems and she shouldn't be holding onto feeling anything for him (while, ironically, Goh is worried about her but more over the fact that if she comes back, then things will go back to normal). In the Intermission he clarifies that, while yes, she should move on from him, constantly deleting his messages is shown to be just as cruel as how Goh treated her, and she should state her farewells to him to be done with it.
  • Hellish Horse: Transforms into one during the flashback adventure in The Midnight Car. Bonus points, as he is crafted from a character Chloe calls the "son of Eligos". Eligos was a demon said to have ridden a skeletal horse into battle.
  • Hypocrite: He chides Parker for unleashing hell on Vermillion City and especially Goh while masking it as him doing it in Chloe's name. Cue Voyage of Wisteria, and he's pulling the exact same bullshit that he did.
  • Iconic Outfit: His "Specter of the Black Forest" form is his most popular form, something he has to see during the Canals of Fondue Car's celebrations in Voyage of Wisteria when numerous denizens start cosplaying as him. It also is very beneficial for him too as his kyorinrin form is so recent that no one is cosplaying as it. Played for Drama also; he can't be in that form due to the fears of Goh, on the Train, mistaking him for Zeno and seeing himself with multiple Chloe cosplayers just reminds him that she's gone forever.
  • Identical Stranger: In Voyage of Wisteria, Gladion mistook him for Specter — whom he encountered in his own train trip — when he sees a sketch of him and Chloe dancing. When Lexi enters the Hazbin Car, Easter chides him for dressing up as their partner (the real Specter)... all while Lexi is totally confused as to who they're talking about.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Twice in Voyage of Wisteria:
    • He's left speechless after Goh snaps at him and tells him that for all that Chloe said he was nice, he's been acting just like Parker since he joined the Quarto. Lexi looks stunned... Then calls One-One to reveal Goh's number, more interested in winning their argument than seeing reason, which in turn leads to another epiphany about exactly how re-igniting Goh's anger can help him lower his number.
    • His father's Disappointed in You speech regarding his continued crusade against the Apex only works partially, since while he moves on from Simon, he keeps holding a grudge against Grace.
  • Irrational Hatred: Despite knowing that vengeance doesn't make him feel better, he continues to hate the Apex (more specifically Grace and Simon) and desire to crush them despite the fact that by the time Voyage of Wisteria takes place, the Apex is essentially gone. He learns to let go thanks to his father and the revelation that Grace is dead although it flares up after learning that Warbler is Grace reincarnated.
  • Jerkass Realization: During his argument with Goh in The Deep Jungle Car, he comes to the realization that he's being mean to the friend that he promised Chloe he would protect and that even she has moved on from the mistakes she has, yet he hasn't.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Unless you're Chloe or one of her allies, Lexi will be cold and aloof with you at best, and an insensitive prick at worst, bit his heart is in the right place.
  • Lady and Knight: The White Knight to Chloe's White Lady, noble, chivalrous and respects her. Zigzagged though since while he initially dresses up in white, he also is shown to have a vindictive streak against Grace and Simon.
  • Light Is Good: Zigzagged. His book form is silver and his first human form gives him ashen gray hair and a white suit. But his inspiration is based off Specter, and Specter himself was bright as the sun yet horrible as a heatwave even when he became an Anti-Hero. Lexi himself is a book who truly wants to explore the train and grows close to Chloe, yet he also holds resentment and bitterness towards Grace and Simon (as they ripped him apart and buried him in the ground for eight years).
  • Light Liege, Dark Defender: The dark defender to Chloe's light liege who is known to be cynical and aggressive over wanting revenge on the people who harmed him and has more diverse ways of attacking due to him being paper. Ironically because he's paper, and from who he's modeled after, he has a white color motif instead of a black one.
  • The Load: Not when it comes to fighting, where he's easily the most valuable member of the team. In fact, the story constantly tries to find ways to stop him from just plowing through the obstacles in the trio's ways. Where he fits this trope is on the emotional support: not only do both times he gives Chloe advice in Blossoming Trail result in Advice Backfire (though granted, he's not entirely at fault), but the first half of Voyage of Wisteria has him Be as Unhelpful as Possible as a result of both his grief over Chloe no longer being around and his own untreated issues, which he takes out on Goh, the very person he's trying to help.
  • Macabre Moth Motif: His animal motif.
    • He transforms into a swarm of moths during a pillow fight in the Crayon Car showcasing his association with darkness like Chloe does. He also gifts Chloe a paper bracelet with a moth fluttering over it. Chloe uses this when she's about to lose her head from The Organ Man, commanding Lexi to cut her hair off.
    • In the Voyage of Wisteria Intermission, he tries to reconcile with Raboot and Drizzile by turning some papers into moths.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • His name is short for Lexicon, a type of book that explains a vocabulary.
    • Lexi can be short for the name Alexander, which translated into Greek is "Defender of man". He takes the form of a character Chloe calls the "son of White Knight Eligos", and he is quick to be there for Chloe when she needs it.
  • Must Make Amends:
    • After accidentally getting Chloe burned during a fight with his father, Lexi spends the next chapter apologizing in any way that he can: making food for her, getting to know her, preventing her from getting too close to a stove and even apologizing by having her beat him up if it would satisfy her. Thankfully Chloe understands that this was all an accident and she forgives him instantly.
    • He gets another case of this in Voyage of Wisteria after his callout to Goh and continued hatred of Simon and Grace cause him to start developing into the very same thing he hates. Unlike Chloe, however, while Goh and the rest of the team are willing to forgive him, they're not so willing to brush off his detrimental attitude early into the story.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Has a brief one during his fight with his father. When a tea kettle gets sent flying into the air, Chloe pushes him out of the way and has her left shoulder hit with boiling hot water. He looks in horror as Chloe is sent to a wash basin and doused with water to cool her skin and becomes determined to make things right.
    • He gets another moment like this when Goh snaps at him that for all of Chloe's talk that he was great, the fact he's been such an asshole leads him to believe he was only ever nice to her, while pointing out he promised her that he would help him get off the Train.
  • Mythical Motifs: Gryphons. They were his favorite mythical creature according to Titus and he has the ability to transform into one. He usually takes this form for Chloe and Atticus to ride on, sometimes takes naps as one, and can form wings and claws of one to make a statement.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: He was quite curious of Chloe's story of the "Specter of the Black Forest" to the point that he allowed Chloe to make up his human form exactly like her character and begs for even more stories from her. Although sometimes he's shown to be quite confused at the dark references Chloe brings up (like questioning if she was being sarcastic when she used "The Mariner's Revenge" lyrics to describe how he wants to torture Grace and Simon or wondering how she can calmly explain what happens if you decide to stab your cochlea.)
  • Noodle Incident: When he starts bleeding red ink in The Grand Cineplex Car, Connor immediately is begging Lexi to stop. Connor explains that something happened prior to Lexi being buried and he was so mad his ink started to turn red like blood.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Lexi falls in love with Chloe and their bond is shown to be near romantic which is commented by others and their bond even starts with a Dance of Romance. Chloe is often known looking at him fondly, because of the stories he carries and just being in awe at his powers. However neither of them get any closer than what could be considered Platonic Life-Partners due to Chloe being 10 and the nature of the Infinity Train. Voyage of Wisteria begins to play with this since Lexi does not have any warm feelings towards Chloe's Childhood Friend Goh and really misses her, especially since the Canals of Fondue is in celebration of her stopping the Apex and he has to see many cosplayers dressed as her and him in a more romantic light.
  • Not So Similar:
    • In Blossoming Trail, both he and Parker have notable anger issues and a close relationship with Chloe, with an added goal of helping her return. However, that's where the similarities end: Lexi accompanies Chloe across the Train to help her number go down, while Parker tries to convince everybody in Vermillion City to change for the better for Chloe's sake. Lexi, while volatile when his anger spills, still knows when to reign it in, while Parker doesn't stop whatsoever. Lexi is angry at Simon and Grace for what they did, but doesn't target the rest of the Apex, while Parker's anger evolves to the point he not only targets Chloe's classmates, but everybody in Vermillion City. Lexi knows that Vengeance Feels Empty long before he meets his goal of taking out the Apex, while Parker has to go through the Act 2 fiasco before the lesson finally hits home.
    • However, in Voyage of Wisteria, with Chloe off the train and being tasked to look out for Goh, Lexi starts acting more and more like Parker. He believes Chloe can do no wrong despite her flaws, he keeps grudges due to slights that others have forgotten about or moved on from, he refuses to think his behavior is wrong, and he takes out his anger on not just Goh, but other random people, all for what he believes is Chloe's sake. Luckily, Lexi is called out on his terrible behavior and told to stop before it became a major problem.
  • One Head Taller: Described as a head taller than Chloe herself when he utilizes a humanoid form.
  • Our Gryphons Are Different: His favorite mythical creature is a gryphon and he is capable of folding his body to become one. Unlike most gryphons who like gold, he loves stories.
  • Paper Master: Can fold his arms into different weapons like a blade or whip and is able to form his pages into bigger constructs. He can also separate his papers from his body and if separated, his papers will be naturally drawn to one another as long as his book is intact. In Voyage of Wisteria, he can shuffle his papers to make him resemble a door.
  • Paper People: While Chloe found him as a book, he's capable of turning into a construct similar to that of his father.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Throughout Voyage of Wisteria, his anger has been simmering due to how he can never see Chloe again, he has to keep an eye on her Childhood Friend, he keeps seeing cosplay couples of him and Chloe in the Canals of Fondue Car, Atticus returns to Corginia to continue his duties and then by the Grand Cineplex Car, he hears of the biopic based on Chloe's adventures and a denizen who's information his friend is wrong. He completely snaps by reverting to his "Specter of the Black Forest" form and bleeds red ink.
  • Real Men Can Cook: Or at least tries to. His attempt of making food for Chloe has his papers covered in pineapple pulp and butter. Justified in that he's not used to having a paper form in comparison to his father.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He's a paper man that again, is based on a Specter (who himself was associated with plants), but he's quite artistic and doesn't mind dancing the Lobster Quadrille with Chloe. His favorite book growing up was "Blue Angel" (but that's more of a Shout-Out to his origin). He also likes cute things like an adorable winged jaguar cub in The Hidden Temple Car.
  • Retcon: Later stories reveal that he's actually a prince and his father is King of Azada. This is due to Infinity Train: Boiling Point initially calling him a prince (from a comment Chloe made in its prequel of comparing Lexi to a spoiled prince).
  • Revenge: This is what he desires against the Apex, primarily Simon and Grace, at the start of Blossoming Trail.
  • Revenge Before Reason:
    • He's so consumed by rage over what Grace and Simon did to him that his desire for revenge against them clouds his better judgement at several points of the story.
    • This gets Played for Drama in Voyage of Wisteria, where this trope, coupled with his unresolved Chloe-related grief and mental issues, causes him to lash out at Goh over all his previous mistakes and the damage he did to Chloe. Thing is, not only is he basically a broken record, repeating stuff that Goh and everyone has heard ad nauseum, but he's explicitly breaking the promise he did to Chloe about helping Goh recover. It gets so bad that once the issue gets resolved, the team keeps him at arms' length in Goh or Apex-related matters and their trust on him, while not completely broken, is definitely damaged.
  • Rule of Symbolism: His first appearance as the "Specter of the Black Forest" represents how Chloe is indulging in her love of horror. By Arc 2, Chloe turns him into a kyorinrin, to show her experimenting in something new. Moreover, kyorinrin dislike those who would toss aside such knowledge, reflecting how Lexi wants revenge for being buried alive. By Voyage of Wisteria and the Hazbin Car, Lexi makes his own outfit based off a crane that's not bound to his bias towards Chloe and dedicating a new start to his life.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: While his powers allow him to take the form of whatever he desires, he mostly sets on Spectre from Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS (or as Chloe calls him, "Specter of the Black Forest") before he changes it into a red kimono wearing humanoid with dragon horns and tail in Arc 2 and continues to wear this in Voyage of Wisteria under Chloe's request until The Hazbin Car where he decides to make his new attire based on a crane to let go of his anger.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: The attire of his first human form has a brilliant vanilla ice-cream suit and black tie.
  • Single Tear: Sheds one when he learns that his "punishment" for harming Chloe is that he gets to travel with Chloe and Atticus across the train like he always wanted. When Chloe finally leaves the Train, he cries another one as this means they'll never see each other again.
  • Spanner in the Works: Convincing Chloe to at least email Parker during the Cyan Desert Car paid off since Parker innocently wanting to email Chloe is what has him reveal that UnChloe was purposefully blocking her text messages.
  • Story-Breaker Power: He's easily the most powerful member of the original Trio as if he wanted to, he could just cut people to death with sharp papers via Death of a Thousand Cuts or slice someone's neck open with a paper sword. The only things that stop him from going all out are Chloe's insistence of not wanting bloodshed and his own conscience.
    • In the Comm-Switch Car, Commi states that he's not allowed to go through the trials because of his abilities.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: Makes pineapple juice and a roast turkey sandwich for Chloe as an apology for getting her hurt. Slightly downplayed, as their friendship begins in earnest when he requests that Chloe create his human form.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When he tells Chloe that she's to give prizes for the Caucus Race in Azada, he tells her that she can give herself... before clarifying he meant her stories.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Two examples.
    • He believes that after everything Grace and Simon, and by extension the Apex, have done to him and the Train, that they don't deserve to be forgiven and that they deserve to be punished for what they did. It takes him most of Blossoming of Trail and the sequel to let go of that hatred.
    • There's also Goh, which is Played for Drama. Ever since he found out about Goh's Facedex post on Chloe, he hasn't quite forgotten about it, which drives his discomfort when Goh ends up on the Train and Chloe asks him and the Quarto to keep an eye out. The drama comes from the fact that at this point in the story, Goh is such a broken mess that Lexi comes across as downright cruel for wanting to beat him over the head with this fact.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In Blossoming Trail, while Lexi could become quite mean spirited, he was a Jerk with a Heart of Gold at worst and he could at least act civil around people. When Voyage of Wisteria rolls around, not only does he become insufferable when dealing with Chloe's absence, but he decides to take his anger out on Goh, who at this point is an Empty Shell of who he used to be who's been through so much trauma he could very well wheel himself just to escape it all. Thankfully he starts moving on from this mindset.
  • Understanding Boyfriend: Downplayed since he and Chloe aren't a couple, but he comforts her when she states that she's ostracized by her peers and from her childhood friend, even telling Chloe to move on from Goh since he never cared for her (when in reality, Goh is worried sick about her gone and is suffering a mental breakdown as a result). He also tells Chloe that she needs to let go of her obsession with horror and branch out into new things. Unfortunately, this gets Played for Drama in Voyage of Wisteria. Now that Goh is on the Train, Lexi can't help but feel jealous over how the supposed "Friend" paid little to no attention to Chloe whereas he has witnessed all of Chloe's kindness and compassion.
  • Unishment: His punishment is to travel with Chloe until she's ready to go home... meaning that he'll finally get his wish to leave the Flying Books Car to explore the train and he'll get to do it with a passenger that he's become smitten for.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When he learned of Goh's Facedex rant about Chloe, he turned into a dragon and rampaged across the Cabbage Car.
  • Vague Age: It's hard to tell how old he truly is, but given that his initial humanoid form is based off Specter (who is around 16-18), then he's presumably the equivalent of a teenager. Voyage of Wisteria has him remark he is 20 in "book years".
  • Vengeance Denied: He wanted to get revenge on the Apex, primarily Simon and Grace, for tearing him and leaving him Buried Alive for years. He doesn't get either by the end of the story: Simon drowns by the hand of the Toluca Lake demon, the Apex disbands as per canon, and Grace ends up fatally stabbed to death by Ogami.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty:
    • Discussed. He wants revenge on what Grace and Simon did to him, but knows that vengeance will not give him the catharsis he seeks. Unfortunately, he's still showing signs of not being able to let go, as he tells his father that all he wants is to get a single apology from the two assholes who hurt him, but he'll never get that chance since Simon drowned and Grace is now Warbler, Goh's denizen partner. Through Titus, Lexi learns to let go of his anger towards Simon, but still harbors feelings to hurt Grace until he sees Toby, Lucy and Hazel give a funeral for her.
    • A case could also be said for Goh. Ever since he heard about his message back in the Pokemon World, he's made it his mission to make him pay on her appears on the Train. However, while he does get his revenge this time unlike Grace and Simon, it ends up alienating him from his teammates, who are growing sick of his anger and focus on revenge, Goh, the very person he's supposed to be protecting, and almost turns his promise to Chloe to protect Goh into an Empty Promise.
  • The Villain Must Be Punished: He's the most adamant about The Apex being propely punished for all the pain they caused to the Infinity Train, and when Goh, whom he sees as a villain, enters the Train, he decides to make his life a living hell over how he allegedly treated Chloe.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Is capable of shaping the papers that make up his body into different things like a gryphon to a dragon.
  • Waxing Lyrical: When he gives his apology to Chloe at her Unbirthday Party, one of the things he states that he was "happy just to dance with you".
  • Western Zodiac: He's an Aries according to the author. He's known to be honest about his observations of Chloe and quite passionate about seeing her grow. He also is known to be temperamental and moody in regard to bullying and injustices. Aries are also compatible with Libras, representing his bond with Chloe (who herself is a Libra).
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Amelia chews him out in The Grand Cineplex Car for going on a tirade about everything that's been going on with Chloe, telling him that she gets that he misses her and he's angry about it, but that gives him no excuse to lash out at others.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Ashen grey actually, but his cruelty is only shown when the topic of Grace and Simon come up. Other than that, he's shown to be kind and courteous to Chloe and Atticus.
    • Come Voyage of Wisteria, however, and the trope begins being played straighter, as he Took a Level in Jerkass after Chloe left which lead him to, among other things, nearly maul a Denizen over a misconception about Chloe. He thankfully gets better by Act 2.
  • Youkai: After Lexi tells Chloe that she needs to take a break from horror, Chloe folds his papers and designs him into a kyorinrin who are collections of scrolls and papers who lash out at those who would not take care of such priceless knowledge.

    SPOILER CHARACTER: The Artificer

Amelia Hughes

A passenger on the train who turned out to have usurped One-One three decades ago in order to recreate her life with her deceased husband in some way, shape or form. After the passenger named Tulip Olsen stopped her, she now works under One-One on undoing the damage she placed through searching cars filled with corrupted code before ultimately joining the Red Lotus Trio.
  • Abusive Precursors: Acts as this for The Apex, who were indirectly created from her actions; not only does she never even bother to try to correct them on what they're supposed to do, preferring to either fool around with them by weaving tales of Chloe being a witch or joining the blaming party against them, but she goes as far as to use them as scapegoats in order to make herself seem more innocent by comparison.
  • Action Girl: She prefers firearms rather than a head-on approach, but she's still capable of kicking butt when she needs to.
  • Action Mom: An older variation (as she's in her sixties at this point) but she acts like a surrogate mother to Chloe and is technically the mother of Hazel. And she will kick your ass if anything happens to these girls. She'll even fight off Pyramid Head to save Chloe if need be.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: She was stuck in a funk when she saved Grace, which brought the Apex into existence as it convinced her to try and create it. She really hates that her visit to the Pumpkin Car brought this about.
  • Actually, I Am Him: Just like in canon, she eventually reveals herself to be the Conductor the Apex have worshipped to Simon and Grace. It just so happens that the circumstances in which she spills the beans make the situation even worse.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Amelia was more neutral in Book 3, not even caring about the damage she caused or the cult who worships her, barring how she chews out Simon for being a child. But in Blossoming Trail she's now conspiring to help stop the Apex from causing more damage, joining with the Red Lotus Trio, and to hopefully rescue Hazel before Grace and Simon realize who she truly is. Voyage of Wisteria has her become the leader of the Quarto following Chloe and Atticus's departure.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • Was Reformed, but Not Tamed when she returned for Book 3 and really didn't care for anyone else, how her actions created the Apex or Grace's encounter with her (as she considered it a But for Me, It Was Tuesday moment). Her texts with Chloe show that she's concerned about what the ten-year-old is getting into with Atticus and Lexi, having her feel remorse for how she turned Atticus into a Ghom, and thanks Chloe for stating how she's trying to atone for her mistakes. She even is willing to stand up for Chloe when she confronts the Apex and hugs Chloe when it's time for her to take her exit.
    • Also, she has a massive Oh, Crap! moment when she realizes Hazel is with Grace and Simon and rushes to contact Chloe to save her. And instead of dismissing Hazel as her own person and only taking the girl with her for scientific study like in canon, she sympathizes with her and apologizes for everything the turtle girl has had to go through.
  • Adaptational Skill:
    • In canon, she mentioned in "The Hey Ho Whoa" Car that she's not skilled at cooking anything; the story says she can cook some British foods, but don't expect her to make good pancakes and scrambled eggs.
    • Had No Social Skills in Book 3 — due to how she kept to herself for 30+ years — but she has such a silver tongue that convinces the Apex kids to believe everything she says.
    • Judging by The Dead Carnival Car and The Fog Car, Amelia is good with firearms.
  • Aloof Ally: She's initially not that interested in joining with the trio's antics, but they eventually win her over.
  • Animal Motif: The turtle, based on a handkerchief she had with turtles printed on it. The Unfinished Car is populated with turtle citizens and Hazel, an experimental clone of Alrick, has a turtle-form. She initially didn't want to move on from losing Alrick, like how a turtle tucks inside his shell, but now she's on the path to redeem herself which is quite slow given how she has a humongous number on her. Moreover, the concept of infinity was the idea of the Earth sitting back on a turtle which stood on the back of a slightly bigger turtle ad infinitum ("turtles all the way down"). She also has her shields like a turtle have shells to protect themselves.
  • Ascended Extra: Appeared at the halfway point of Book 3 of Infinity Train to give exposition of what she's been doing since the end of Book 1, helping to shed light on what the Train's purpose is to Grace and Simon before she left to continue her duty to remove corrupted code on the Train and could care less about this cult doing things in her "name". Here, she's more on helping to stop the Apex since she indirectly created it and has to stop Grace and Simon from learning who Hazel truly is and becomes the leader of the Quarto when Voyage of Wisteria starts.
  • At Least I Admit It: When Samantha blames Amelia for causing the birth of the Apex in Le Chat Chalet Car, Amelia doesn't deny that she should've been paying attention to it for the past decade or so... but adds that at least she is trying to make amends now while The Cat has done nothing to repair her relationship with Simon and refuses to admit that it's her fault that Simon is messed up.
    • This is eventually deconstructed in Voyage of Wisteria: for the honest admission and evidence she makes about how she is making amends for her role in creating the Apex, it's clear that she's subconsciously still using the Apex as a scapegoat to avoid taking complete responsibility for how far-reaching and inhumane her influence was. This mindset comes to a head when she, Hazel and Goh watch Grace's memory tape; when she doubles down on her view that Grace has more direct responsibility for exacerbating the Apex principles in the first place (which was ironically something Lexi often did), and the emotional aftermath of the Apex children — until Goh and Hazel point out that they have to deal with said emotional aftermath, too, and don't need to re-explore the Fog Car or any related of the related events that affected both the characters from the Apex, any associated Denizens, and the children from the Pokémon world.
  • The Atoner: She's trying to undo the damage she did by working with One-One to find bits of corrupted code she added to the cars. She also takes up the request to dismantle the Apex if it means dropping her number down more. Chloe appreciates her efforts and tells every passenger and denizen she can to leave Amelia be even if they don't forgive her. Atticus also begins to see her efforts are honest.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Amelia initially wants to help the Red Lotus Trio via triggering her pulse in a car Grace and Simon get into to send them far away. Text exchanges between her and Chloe has her open up more and Chloe reassuring her that Amelia is atoning for her sins is what convinces her to fully join them as the Red Lotus Quarto, forgoing meeting them at the Fog Car and meet them in Azada instead with implications that she did so because Chloe really needed some comfort after the Cyan Desert Car. She also is the first to go to Chloe's defense against Grace and Simon when they encounter one another in Silent Hill.
  • Beware the Honest Ones: Alongside being the former Conductor, she can be very blunt. So, when she spills the truth to the Apex, all of them react in horror at what they've done and how they have just abandoned their families for nothing.
  • Big "NO!":
    • Shouts this when she realizes that Hazel is a denizen created by her and she's traveling with Grace and Simon, not to mention that Hazel is the cause of the pulse activating on so many cars.
    • Shouts this when Chloe dies after hitting the ground via Simon.
  • Brainy Brunette: Has brown hair and is a capable engineer who works on fixing the Infinity Train of her influence.
  • Brutal Honesty:
    • Has a tendency to be blunt about things, admitting that she was going to be this when she told Grace and Simon the truth about the train and telling Chloe that hanging onto a six-year-old's promise to make curry was kinda pathetic in hindsight.
    • As they leave the Fog Car, she tells the Apex without any sugar-coating that they have completely forgot about their families for their fun and that they may well have been forgotten at this point. Not to mention that time on the Train equals time in the real world...
  • Character Development: Was initially aloof, but her time with the other members of the Quarto has her opening up to them, willing to give Chloe advice for her return trip home, and even go as far as to protect Hazel from Grace and Simon. This is even noted in the Fog Car by how her number is revealed to have been dropping to the point that it only reaches her chest, in comparison to it still on her neck like in the show and she barely gives a damn about it. In Voyage of Wisteria, she ends up being the Team Mom for Hazel, Lexi and Goh once Atticus leaves for Corginia.
  • The Chessmaster: She describes her manipulating the Apex to believe her words like it was a chess game.
  • Composite Character: Given the Silent Hill influences, Amelia can be considered a combination of Rosa de Silva (mother going into Silent Hill to rescue her daughter), Cybil Bennett (the rifle-wielder who aids protagonist) and Douglas Cartland (a Parental Substitute to the Heather Mason character, Chloe).
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Initially very cold and aloof, but the longer she spends with the trio, the more she thaws out.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Agrees that the Apex should be stopped but is relieved that The Fog Car isn't some endless car filled with fog that would keep people trapped inside forever, forcing them to starve. She also does not take the news of an Apex child who drowned in the lake very well.
    • For all that she did in trying to recreate her old life, she wouldn't go as far as remolding someone else's soul into being Alrick.
    • Once she realizes what the Cage of Flauros will result in, she immediately states that no one, not even the Apex deserve that fate. Even she is horrified at the Cold-Blooded Torture that Paul had to go through.
    • Amelia, understandably, greatly dislikes Grace for all the atrocities she committed in her name (the biggest ones being this close to indoctrinate Hazel, who is her daughter, along with her actions that led to Simon going to murder Chloe) and was not sympathetic to the cult-leader at all at the ending of Blossoming Trail. However, in Voyage of Wisteria, when Amelia learns that Grace was murdered, she's horrified at how Ogami relentlessly stabbed her to death all while Grace apologizes for all she did. She hastily messages One to spread the word about Ogami and to make sure that Grace's death is not celebrated as a good thing. She also is not pleased to have One-One not understanding the horrors of Grace dying outside her getting a chance to atone for her sins.
    • When she learns of Grace's backstory, she is shocked that the Train had the gall to take Horace (a terminally ill patient) into a dangeorus location and Mark Kessler (the boy who would become Ogami) murdering Horace and then cutting his own head off.
  • Eviler than Thou: The Train sees her as this given how her number practically dwarfs Grace's own. She really hates that this is right.
  • Ex-Big Bad: Was once the Conductor who lorded over the Train, she now travels the Train to undo her mistakes in the hopes of getting her number down to 0 before aiding the Red Lotus Trio and hoping to stop Ogami from murdering other passengers.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In Voyage of Wisteria, she cuts her braid off so that she can easily blend in with the denizens in the Canals of Fondue Car who won't bat an eyelash on someone just "cosplaying" as her, and represents how she's returning to the Amelia that got on the train 30 years ago.
  • Expy: A Mama Bear who wields a shotgun to a young girl with red hair and an association with witches? Amelia is basically the Infinity Train version of Rosa Ushiromiya.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: The water to Chloe's fire. Their Tarot cards are opposites: Chloe is associated with Queen of Wands (The Wands suit associated with Fire) while Amelia is associated with the Three of Cups (which is based on water). She's usually the calm and motherly figure to Chloe's spit-fire child.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: While Tulip felt sorry and forgave Amelia for the damage she did, Atticus notes that he will escort her out of Corginia if she ever set foot there (and Amelia herself agrees she deserves it when Chloe tells her of this). Atticus decides to bury the hatchet in the Cyan Desert Car since they both have a common enemy.
Atticus: One-One said that Amelia is working on making amends, hoping to remove any bits of coding in the cars she made to decrease her number down little by little. While Tulip forgave her, I don't hold that same sentiment. Amelia threatened the safety of my people and even transformed me into a Ghom so I could go and attack my friend. If I ever see Amelia again, I will request that she takes the walk of shame to the exit and never come back.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Atticus initially does not accept Amelia's past as a reason for all the destruction she caused and for how she turned him into a Ghom. Amelia herself admits that all she did for the sake of being with Alrick does not excuse all the people/denizens she hurt over the past 30+ years or the fact that a cult spawned because of her actions.
  • The Ghost: She's not seen in person throughout Blossoming Trail Act 1 and Atticus reveals she's working with One-One to undo the damage she did. She starts texting Chloe in the Canals of Fondue Car (the penultimate chapter of Ac 1) before making her first physical appearance during the Cyan Desert Car, in the middle of Act 2.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Yes, she's no longer the Conductor, and yes, she's part of the Red Lotus Quarto, but she also is known to be quite blunt about people's actions and excuses and won't sugar-coat how Chloe herself has also done wrong.
  • Gratuitous German: Shouts Gott is tot! (God is dead) at Deaddy before firing the killing blow.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo:
    • She's a brainy stoic brunette compared to the fiery red-haired Chloe.
    • Also is this to Hazel who has long blond hair and is sweet and cheerful. Makes sense, as Hazel was based off of her fianc&eacute Alrick, who also had blond hair.
  • Heel–Face Turn: For all intents and purposes, she's no longer the same Conductor who rampaged throughout the Train.
  • Hero of Another Story:
    • Whatever she did prior to her reign as the Conductor and after she stepped down. For example she mentioned entering something called Maccadam's Old Oil House.
    • She's encountered Gladion before and knows that he helped save the Tape Car. Then, in Voyage of Wisteria, she suddenly remembers that Gladion was part of a group called the White Gestalt...
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Apparently knows Ghostbusters (1984) as she recites the "Mass Hysteria" quote from said film describing what would happen if the Apex ripped One-One from the engine. The author notes revealed that it was one of Alrick's favorite films.
    • She apparently tried to recreate the Dragonballs during her reign as Conductor and has studied other worlds including Chloe's own. She also tried researching about the Distortion World and was annoyed upon learning that Giratina was not the God of the Underworld.
    • Is apparently not into what he terms "Shakespeare in the park" when fighting Eyeclops.
    • When Chloe fights The Curry Prince, it's revealed that Amelia teaches Chloe boxing on the side.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: She agrees to Henry and Walter's plan to trap the Apex in The Fog Car all while completely unaware what the duo have done to three other passengers to ensure this plan goes off without a hitch...or perhaps not even aware of what will happen to the Apex themselves...She later wises up to them and decides that not even the Apex deserves the Cage of Flauros.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Whatever Henry and Walter are, their appearances are so gruesome that not even she can stomach it. When we see these forms in The Fog Car, we can understand why.
  • Important Haircut: Downplayed, but she severs her braid to make herself look less like her old self in "Voyage of Wisteria."
  • In-Series Nickname: Chloe calls her "Miss Fortune" because her shields prevent her from being attacked.
  • Insistent Terminology: She still calls One-One just "One". Justified as revealed in Book 4 of Infinity Train that he was originally just "One" when she first entered the Train.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Ends up befriending 10-year-old Chloe through their text messages; it gets to the point that she assigns Chloe to help rescue Hazel before Grace and Simon realize who she really is. She's also willing to give Chloe the advice needed to help her move forward and to stop blaming others for their faults.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Just seeing her name is a big spoiler for Infinity Train itself as it's assumed the reader has watched Book 1 and know of her role in Book 3.
  • Lethal Chef: Zigzagged. The Cyan Desert Car reveals that she can cook British foods, but she plain sucks at pancakes and scrambled eggs.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The Dark Feminine to Chloe's light as she wears a grey suit (originally a black cloak) and her motivations were all about using the Train for her own uses to be with her fiancé in some way, shape of form. She continues to be this way with Hazel (despite Hazel wearing black and grey).
  • Loony Friends Improve Your Personality: Not that the trio are that loony, but Amelia was rather aloof and pessimistic before she joined them. After joining them, while still aloof, she's become kinder and more empathetic, even developing protective instincts towards Chloe and Hazel before extending that to Goh.
  • Mama Bear: Do not hurt Chloe or Hazel unless you want to face the barrel end of a shotgun. She later extends this towards Goh when he gets on the Train.
    • During the dinner in the Fog Car with Grace and Simon, she jumps to Chloe's defense, knowing full well that Simon would want to break her neck if he had the chance. She also agrees with Lexi that they must ensure that Chloe does not become Lady Destiny.
    • When Alain's nightmares start causing the apartment to freeze over, she immediately goes to save Hazel who is stuck in the Hotel alongside Tuba. In fact, upon seeing Hazel on the Infinet, she realizes who this girl is and races off before Simon and Grace learn the truth.
    • She'll fight off Pyramid Head if need be if it gives Chloe a chance to stop Delirium.
    • She attacks an Apex kid who says Chloe deserved to be killed (just after Chloe landed on the ground from Simon dropping her) and threatens to murder the entire Apex if they harm Hazel.
    • In Voyage of Wisteria, Amelia is fine talking to a "fake" Chloe until said fake insults Hazel by calling her a "disgusting little brat". That becomes Amelia's last straw and she's ready to bring out a recording of everything the fake has said. And when Mad Ben holds Hazel hostage, she's ready to fight him back.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She seems to have come to a realization that she has done very bad things and sadly tells Chloe that she probably will never leave the Train, her body dropped off at the roof of her old university and her soul repurposed into another denizen to help another grieving widow. This gets amplified in Voyage of Wisteria, as she's forced to confront the fact that using The Apex as scapegoats to avoid confronting her own issues has only caused an untold amount of damage to the Train itself that could've been avoided if she had actually done something about them earlier.
  • Never Mess with Granny: She's old enough to be a grandmother and she's armed with guns that will rip you to shreds if you hurt Chloe, Hazel or Goh.
  • Not So Similar: Both she and The Cat left an impression on one of the leaders of the Apex (Amelia to Grace, The Cat to Simon), and neither of them lifted a finger while the Apex ran around ransacking cars. However, while The Cat stood still even after finding out about the Apex's existence and what they were doing, not only does Amelia get off her butt as soon as she can, but she even manages to convince them to lower their numbers (somewhat) and admits that she messed up.
    • This trope becomes a bit more Played With come Voyage of Wisteria however; come the Memory Lane chapter, and while the two do seem Not So Similar on the surface, underneath her "At Least I Admit It" mentality, Amelia proves herself just as apathetic and cowardly as The Cat, using The Apex as scapegoats for her wrongdoings and then try to beat a dead horse by trying to call out Grace for what she did while ignoring how she's the reason she went wild in the first place. Goh and Hazel are quick to call her out on it, leaving her speechless.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Amelia is usually The Stoic and rarely emotes, so the minute she does, things are bad.
    • Upon seeing a picture of Hazel in The Debutante Ball Car and the number on her hand, Amelia screams a Big "NO!" when she realizes that Hazel is one of her experiments and rushes out of the Mall Car in a haste to stop Grace and Simon from finding out.
    • When Henry and Walter begin to reveal who they truly are, Amelia shouts "OH MY GOETHE!" in horror. The narration states that she hadn't uttered that phrase since she learned of Alrick's death.
    • The situation with the Cage of Flauros is enough for Amelia to look in fear when she realizes Hazel is in danger of being killed.
    • She utterly breaks when she sees Chloe dead and goes as far as to hit an Apex child and Grace with her shotgun in her anger.
  • Precision F-Strike: Twice after the deaths of Chloe and Tuba and for good reason. She tells the Apex to have some damn empathy for once after one said Chloe deserved to die. Then she tells them that they will "fucking die right here and now" if they hurt Hazel.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After having to see Chloe die by Destruction, she snaps and attacks the Apex child who stated that Chloe deserved it.
  • Reverse Psychology: Uses this on the Apex to convince the kids to leave the Mall Car and head off to find Chloe.
  • Screen Name: Goes by "Amelialne" in chats.
  • Sixth Ranger: In the beginning of the Cyan Desert Car, she is welcomed as the fourth member to the Red Lotus Trio, now dubbed "Red Lotus Quarto".
  • Shoot the Dog: If things go to hell in the Fog Car, she is willing to kill Hop to stop the ritual, as she bets on the idea his component is hardest to replace even if they capture her. Thankfully that never came to fruition.
  • Stealth Pun: Her screen name is Amelialne. "Lne" can be equated as "One" so it can be read as "Amelia-One" to relate how she serves under One-One and how she keeps calling him "One".
  • The Stoic: She rarely emotes and keeps a neutral face throughout most of the stuff she encounters. She gradually shows more emotion as she joins the Quarto.
  • Team Mom: After Chloe leaves the train in Blossoming Trail and Atticus goes back to Corginia early on in Voyage of Wisteria, she acts as the leader of the group, helping to comfort Hazel, makes sure Lexi doesn't go overboard with his anger issues, and gives Goh his space as he works through his own issues.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Chloe's Girly Girl as she wears a suit and is more focused on engineering with a focused mind.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Amelia's time as part of the Red Lotus Quarto has her lightening up a bit, as the chapter after the Cyan Desert arc has her join in on a spa treatment, a picnic and mowing down CarnEvil with a gun. She also doesn't hold as much angst or regret for what she did as she tells Chloe to be able to try new things instead of being "obsessed" over something.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Was initially cold and aloof in canon, but spending time with the Red Lotus Trio softens her as she becomes quick to protect Chloe and Hazel from the Apex and whatever Walter and Henry are scheming. By the end of Chloe's travels, she hugs the girl and thanks Chloe for everything she's done. In Voyage of Wisteria, she tells Chloe that she requested One-One to help make a car as a tribute to Chloe.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Simon starts insulting the Unfinished Car during a tense meal in the Fog Car, all she does is grab her voice modulator and speak into it to tell him to shut up.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Usurping One-One's position as the Conductor so she could fill the hole left with Alrick's death led to the following: the birth of the Apex, the destruction of multiple cars, the lives of numerous denizens and some passengers ruined (and in some cases many denizens' deaths) and in turn led to Lexi's hatred towards passengers along with festering anger from multiple denizens about the Apex's killing spree. She's well aware that her selfishness has done horrible things, and is working to fix things in any way she can.
  • Visual Development: When Amelia reveals her number to Grace and Simon in the Fog Car, it's all the way down to her chest in comparison to still being up to her neck in canon, revealing that she's been working hard to atone for her mistakes.
  • Walking Spoiler: She was one of this for Infinity Train and it's hard to describe anything else after the Cyan Desert arc.
  • Would Hurt a Child: After an Apex kid (Tiffany) says Chloe deserved to die — just moments after Chloe fell to her death — she hits the little brat across the head with her shotgun and threatens to kill the entire Apex if they decide to take a step towards Hazel. She also was willing to murder Hop if it meant stopping the Flauros.
  • You Are in Command Now: Ends up being the leader of what's left of the Red Lotus Quarto when Chloe returns to her world and Atticus goes back to his duties as king.

SPOILER CHARACTER: Child of the In-between

Hazel

A small girl currently traveling with Tuba, Grace, and Simon who has a broken number (337). Unbeknownst to her and to the others, she is actually a failed clone of Alrick Jimmens, Amelia's fiance, meaning she is actually a denizen of the train.

In Voyage of Wisteria, she travels alongside what remains of the Red Lotus Quarto and becomes the caretaker of Goh's denizen partner Warbler once she finds out who they really are.

  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Becomes the replacement Red Lotus Quarto member for Chloe near the end of Blossoming Trail.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: She not only has to see Tuba die like in canon, but Chloe too, with Hazel getting irrefutable evidence that the Apex isn't worth joining when they show themselves glad the latter's dead, dismissing Tuba as a "Null", along with the Apex about to murder her. However unlike canon Hazel who was utterly shattered after Grace's Moment of Weakness, she is back to her more cheerful self in Voyage of Wisteria.
  • Adaptational Badass: Hazel was never shown as a fighter and her only badass moment came at the penultimate episode of Book 3 when she stood up for herself. Blossoming Trail has her quick to use her new turtle state to free Sean's soul in the Fog Car and in Voyage of Wisteria she was the first person to make Ogami terrified and saved herself when Mad Ben tried to use her as a hostage even biting his hand off so he couldn't use his Omnitrix!
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: While their relationship is still a little rocky, she and Grace part ways on much better terms than in canon. And unlike in canon, where she left with Amelia because the former Conductor doesn't want her dead, with Amelia even stating that she's not a caretaker, Amelia in the story takes her in as her daughter rather than an experiment. In Voyage of Wisteria, Hazel is horrified to learn that her big sister figure was murdered by Ogami and is now reincarnated as Goh's denizen partner.
  • Ambiguously Human: She looks human, but something seems off about her. She's not a human, she's actually a denizen.
  • Ascended Extra: She was mostly there to serve as a litmus test for Grace and Simon's empathy in the canon show. Voyage of Wisteria has her exploring the train with her mother as part of the Red Lotus Quarto and later has her own subplot to protect Warbler upon learning the music note denizen is a reincarnated Grace.
  • Badass Adorable: She's not afraid to bite Ogami's finger off, making her the first character to make Ogami terrified. When Mad Ben holds her hostage, she bites his wrist to the point that it gets detached from his arm and smacks him with her pipe.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Breaks as the Fog Car rolls on when she learns of the truth as a denizen, has to see Tuba and Chloe die in front of her and the idealism of having friends at the Apex shatters upon learning that they hate denizens, like Tuba, and want them to die. She perks up later after having her funeral with Tuba and is in the safety of Amelia, Lexi and Atticus.
    • She breaks more upon hearing what Warbler sounds like with a voice and learning that Grace Monroe is dead with only she the one in the know about what's going on and has to protect the little music note from the retribution of a lot of denizens.
  • Cheerful Child: Excited, innocent and so happy to be exploring the Train.
  • Children Are Innocent: Is blissfully aware of who Grace and Simon are and the terrors that await her in The Fog Car. Of course, this might be subject to change...and it does...
  • Clones Are People, Too: She is actually a failed clone of Alrick and Amelia sees her as a person, not an experiment.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She's not afraid to use her turtle form to bite someone as a means to escape.
  • Cuteness Proximity: In Voyage of Wisteria, she squees at Sobble's cute appearance and hugs him, and she gets similarly excited to see all the puppies in Corginia.
  • Damsel out of Distress:
    • Amelia is understandably afraid for Hazel's safety since she is a denizen and contacts Chloe to get her away from Grace and Simon. Ultimately, the Apex disband before Amelia has a chance to save her.
    • In Voyage of Wisteria Mad Ben is barely able to use her as a hostage for a few seconds before she bites off his watch hand and whacks him with her pipe to escape his grasp.
  • Expy: For the Fog Car, she's essentially the Laura of the Apex being a cheerful orphan with blond hair having tension with a blond-haired male (Simon in this case albeit one-sided on his part) and breaks when she learns an Awful Truth (Laura: learning that James killed Mary, Hazel: learning that the Apex are horrible monsters after seeing Tuba and Chloe die). She then ends up leaving the Fog Car being adopted (albeit it's not clear if Laura was adopted by James in the "Leave" ending). The main difference is that Laura was a brat to James whereas Hazel saw Simon as her friend until his true colors came out.
  • Facial Markings: She has the Apex mark on her face, courtesy of Grace. Played for Drama for two reasons: one, Amelia is afraid that she's already been indoctrinated to murdering denizens and two, since the Cage of Flauros will specifically hunt down members of the Apex, then the components will hunt her down too! Thankfully Amelia wipes it off her face, symbolizing that Hazel is not like the Apex at all.
  • Genki Girl: She's a very hyperactive and cheerful girl to the point that she ends up tiring an entire group of corgi puppies dedicated to cuddling others and still has enough energy to chase after General Tori. In the Comm-Switch Car, she drives Drizzile up the wall.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A sweet and happy girl with a mane of blond hair.
  • Happily Adopted: Was adopted as a surrogate daughter by Tuba long before the story begins and then gets taken in by her "mother" Amelia.
  • Innocence Lost: Hooooo boy did it ever. Thankfully, she has more chances to enjoy her childhood during Voyage of Wisteria.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Her farewell with Grace plays out like in canon, the only difference this time is that Simon is dead, Grace makes amends and is able to say her farewells and Amelia is much nicer than the one who only wanted to see Hazel as an experiment.
  • It Was a Gift: Chloe gifts her the sword pendant before she returns home. Goh also gives her Chloe's old flower scrunchie.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: The story assumes readers know the twist of Book 3 in that she's really a denizen created by Amelia in an attempt to recreate Alrich.
  • Man Bites Man: She can use her turtle form to deliver a powerful bite, strong enough to sever one's finger off.
  • Meaningful Name: In Court of Cyclamen, Amelia reveals that Hazel would've been the name of Alrich and her child if they had a girl. The name comes from a William Butler Yeats poem "The Song of Aengus".
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • When Amelia realizes who Hazel is traveling with, she immediately panics because she knows that if Hazel's true form is revealed, she will most likely be wheeled and that it's Hazel presence that is causing the pulse to send cars flying into quarantine.
    • Has one of her own at the end of the Comm-Switch Car, upon learning that Warbler has Grace's voice which means that Grace was killed sometime after the end of the Fog Car.
  • Pipe Pain: Voyage of Wisteria reveals she picked up a copper pipe from The Little Baroness. She doesn't get to weaponize it until the Darkest Day arc against Mad Ben.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Hazel snaps at Todd when he "tries" to comfort her by stating that she can get other friends than that Null (Tuba).
Hazel: She wasn't a null! SHE WAS TUBA!
  • Red Baron: "Child of the In-Between", given to her by Chloe.
  • Say My Name: She screams Tuba's name in agony after the gorilla denizen takes her last breath.
  • Spanner in the Works: She helps free Sean's soul by removing the cage that trapped him in the body of the Phantom.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Tuba bequeaths to Hazel her satchel with a glowing rock when she dies. Hazel would later use the glowing rock as a substitute body for Tuba's funeral.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite being around six and a half, she is genuinely more emotionally mature than her companions at times. For example, she's the one who calls out Lexi still having problems letting go of his anger towards Grace after he learns that Warbler is Grace reincarnated; and she, along with Goh, later tell Amelia that she can't keep on blaming the Apex just to escape responsibility for her own problems and their consequences.
  • The World Is Just Awesome: She sees the Train as this and is excited to explore all of the wonderful cars.
