Main Characters
Rekka Namidare
- Accidental Pervert: He often unintentionally gets into compromising situations with the heroines.
- Big Damn Heroes: He often comes to the rescue in the nick of time.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: He is amazed that Iris got a bigger panel than him after both of them pulled a Big Damn Heroes.
- But Now I Must Go: Whenever he finishes one of the many stories he is involved with, he tries to get back to the previous unfinished stories.
- The Call Knows Where You Live: After turning 16, Rekka is actively pulled into heroless stories to be a substitute.
- Chick Magnet: All the stories he is pulled into have a heroine he is meant to save.
- Childhood Friends: He's been friends with Satsuki since they were six years old.
- The Chosen One/The Unchosen One: Rekka's family line is an endless series of people chosen to be unchosen ones. Anytime a "story" lacks a "chosen one" for any particular reason, the universe automatically designates him as the substitute, and the Story will intercept him in some way no matter how hard he tries to avoid it.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: Justified. Rekka's lineage causes him to constantly get involved in saving the heroines of heroless stories.
- Dangerous 16th Birthday: By virtue of being a Namidare, after turning 16 he will be pulled into heroless stories to be a substitute.
- Dare to Be Badass: He talls Harissa that she is a great mage and she is not worthless.
- Declaration of Protection: He declares he will protect the heroines that are in danger.
- Diving Save: He dive-saves Satsuki from Messiah's initial attack.
- Energy Weapon: Iris gives him a laser gun.
- Future Loser: Without R's intervention, Rekka will die in the war he caused while full of regret. His entire life and failure is recorded in textbooks.
- Harem-Powered: A combination of this and Story Breaker Teamup - due to being dragged into multiple stories from different genres, Rekka gets to use abilities and equipment in places where no one sees them coming. Can't pull out the Sword In The Stone? Just borrow the alien girl's teleportation device!
- Heroic Lineage: As a Namidare, he becomes a hero substitute.
- I Just Want to Be Normal: His wish, which will never come true due to his lineage. Or at least not until he becomes an "adult". He's informed that once he's an adult his position as designated Unchosen One will disappear, but his father is deliberately vague about just what it means to become an "adult".
- Marshmallow Hell: Iris smothers him with her chest when he gets back from Abraam.
- Nice Guy: He doesn't have to save the heroine in each story or get involved (unless the Earth's in danger, but that's a given), but he's not cold-blooded enough to abandon them to a "bad end."
- Oblivious to Love: He was unaware of Satsuki's love for him. Or any of the other heroines' feelings towards him, for that matter, when he does find out, he doesn't believe their feelings are genuine. Rather, Rekka's convinced they fell for him in the heat of their respective moments, and that actual, REALISTIC love takes time. This, to him, is why he can't pick anyone from his harem. Dude clearly doesn't know what kind of series he's in.
- Only the Chosen May Wield: Zig-Zagged. He removes the Hero's Sword from the pedestal by teleporting himself and the sword away from the pedestal.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
- He chastises the High Council for not asking Iris why she does not want the marry the King of Satamonia.
- He later specifically targets Iris' father for allowing his daughter to be given to the King.
- Sequence Breaking: Due to the being involved in multiple stories simultaneously, he has no time to spare and decides to fight the Demon King in Abraam right away, skipping the typical town to town adventuring.
- Unwanted Harem: The heroines he saves join him and try to win his affection, which he mostly deflects, as the only love he believes in is traditional love grown from time and realistic circumstances (i.e. THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF THE CRAP THEY'VE BEEN THROUGH). He just happens to bring this up within earshot of the entire harem, too.
- Xanatos Speed Chess: Due to being involved in many stories simultaneously, Rekka often finds it useful to combine them as they develop and even using one story's Big Bad to solve another story's problem.
R
- Ambiguous Gender: The name, uniform and ambiguous complexion makes it hard to determine R's gender. R is female and likes to be called R-chan.
- Artificial Human: R is an artifical existence called a kick-loom.
- Black Comedy Rape: R jokes that Rekka intends to rape her.
- Deadpan Snarker: R is always quick to sarcastically rag on Rekka's plans, mostly because of their lack of existence.
- Flight: R floats around Rekka the majority of the time.
- Improbable Age: R is about 2 years old, and is tasked with saving the Universe.
- Invisible to Normals: Normal people cannot see R.
- One-Letter Name: R.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Constantly delivers these to Rekka regarding his indeciseveness. It helps that R knows everything about Rekka.
- Set Right What Once Went Wrong: R's aim is to prevent a bad future caused by Rekka refusing to choose from amongst his love interests, thus leading to a war.
- Shipper on Deck: Pushes Rekka to choose one of the heroines and constantly lists each of their good points in hopes that one of them will catch his fancy. That said, R can't do anything (including help in stories) that would be favoring one heroine over the others.
- This Is Gonna Suck: R exclaims that making Rekka choose a heroine will be difficult after becoming aware of his Oblivious to Love tendencies.
- Younger Than They Look: R is about two years old, but was given the appearance of a ten-year-old. This was because she needs to be one of Rekka's heroines but not one he would actually develop a romantic relationship with.
Heroines
Satsuki Otomo

Accidental Innuendo: Her fidgety attitude and vague wording of forming "a compact" that will allow her to pass the Akashic Records to the next generation makes it seem like it is sex. It's just a kiss. - A-Cup Angst: She gets defensive when Iris mocks her chest size, claiming that she's average sized (indeed, seeing her in a swimsuit, she appears to be at least decently endowed).
- Akashic Records: She has access to information on any topic in the universe.
- Childhood Friend Romance: She is in love with Rekka, whom she's been friends (and celebrated the same birthday) with for 10 years.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: She's normally pretty mature, but the arrival of other girls who become interested in Rekka bring out a possessive side of her.
- I Just Want to Be Normal: Not to the same extent as Rekka, but while she tries to remember her duty as a magician, she would rather just have a normal relationship with Rekka, and loathes the idea of dragging him into her troubles.
- Interrupted Declaration of Love: She tries to confess to Rekka before being interrupted by Messiah.
- Love Letter: She writes to Rekka to have him meet her so she can confess to him.
- Tele Portation: She teleported from Earth to Iris' moving ship.
Iris Fineritas Cyphercall
- Alien Princess: She's the princess of another planet, looks completely human except for her tail, and possesses powers such as Super-Strength and super-agility, in addition to having access to super-advanced alien technology.
- Arranged Marriage: Political activities and coercion lead to her father engaging her to some ugly guy.
- Becoming the Mask: Intially in a Fake Relationship with Rekka, she falls for him for real.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: She is very clingy towards Rekka, and is the heroine with the highest chance of getting jealous if another girl has his attention. Especially if it's Satsuki.
- The Dutiful Son: She briefly entertains following through with the Arranged Marriage to save Earth and her own planet.
- Fake Relationship: She tries to get out of the Arranged Marriage by having Rekka act as her lover.
- Human Aliens: Tail aside, she looks like a human.
- It's All My Fault: She blames herself for not understanding her planet's politics and pulling Rekka into a deadly duel with the King of Satamonia.
- Lap Pillow: She holds Rekka on her lap after transporting him to her ship makes him unconscious.
- Ms. Fanservice: A lot of the early Fanservice is focused on her.
- Rebellious Princess: She refuses to be subjected to an Arranged Marriage and escapes.
- The Runaway: She runs away from her father to avoid an Arranged Marriage.
- Sacred First Kiss: She does not want to give her first kiss to the King of Satamonia, but to Rekka.
Harissa Hope
- Alliterative Name: Harissa Hope.
- Apologises a Lot: She apologizes whenver she percieves herself as an inconvenience.
- Entertainingly Wrong: She thinks Rekka's laser gun is light magic, the ultimate magic attack.
- Expressive Hair: The upper part of her bangs react to surprise.
- Good with Numbers: She is able to calculate the coordinates of the Demon King's Lair, allowing Rekka to use his warp watch to help him bypass the barrier surrounding the lair.
- Heroic Second Wind: She finally summons Rekka out of desperation when the Demon King's army attacks.
- Public Execution: She is almost executed for failing to summon a hero.
- Red String of Fate: She gives Rekka a red string to allow him to return to her world anytime.
- Summon Magic: She specializes in summoning creatures. She was expected to summon a hero by her kingdom.
Tsumiki Nozomuno
- Cordon Bleugh Chef: It's implied she can cook normal dishes fine (given she wins the competition once she has some Leviathan meat), but her drive to find a new radically different dish to win Food Champion with results in "dark matter," food so cursed that Rekka needs magic to eat it without fainting.
- Small Role, Big Impact: When she judges a cooking attempt as a failure, she dumps it down a small seemingly bottomless hole in her backyard. This hole leads into the dead world Leviathan is sealed in, where she eats the food to regain her energy. The rising strength of the sealed beast catches the attention of both Tetra and Bahamut, kicking off the main plot of Volume 2.
Tetra Metra Retra
The daughter of the chieftain of the mole people, introduced in Volume 2. Her people guard the seal of a monster of behalf of God, but have grown lazy and complacent with the divine resources they possess.
- Mole Men: Comes from a race of them living in an underground village, though they appear mostly human and their blood is poisonous to Bahamut.
Lea
The "Strongest Beast" holding a strong hatred for the "Monster Who Defied God," introduced in Volume 2. Her true identity is Leviathan.
- Bishōnen Line: Inverted. Her core takes on a human form when she's out of energy.
- Bizarre Taste in Food: Loves Tsumiki's "dark matter." Justified; when you've been sealed in a dead world with literally nothing to eat for millennia, you're not going to care about the taste. Plus all the stuff in it makes it packed with nutrients, making it literal Power-Up Food for her.
- Brought Down to Badass: After Bahamut is killed, she sheds the vast majority of her power to provide her meat for the mole people and Tsumiki. While this is stated to massively drop her overall power, that just makes her about on par with the other heroines, who are all badass in their own right.
- Flight: Can easily soar through the air in her monster form.
- Making a Splash: Fittingly, she packs potent water magic.
- Ms. Fanservice: Her human form receives a lot of Fanservice focus.
- Sealed Good in a Can: After Bahamut tricked her into swapping places with him.
- Walking Spoiler: Her identity is unknown (including to the reader) until R identifies her as a heroine... moments before Bahamut is about to kill her.
Hibiki Banjo
Rekka's relative, introduced in Volume 3. Her branch family has the "Banjo bloodline," which makes her the universe's substitute heroine.
- Action Girl: Having had years of foreknowledge about her duties when she turns sixteen, she prepared appropriately.
- Distaff Counterpart: To Rekka, in concept.
- Foil: Rekka is, bloodline aside, an ordinary high school student and only learned about his role as a Namidare literally the night before it kicked in. Hibiki learned about her bloodline's fate of being involved in stories from a young age, and spent her life up to that point training to be able to handle it.
- Ineffectual Loner: After her friend was hospitalized due to getting mixed up in a story she was in, she made a point of solving every story alone and doing so as bluntly as possible, with little to no consideration given to anyone involved in it. Her "happy ending" has her discard this, when Volume 3's stories are only resolved happily by Rekka working with all the heroines he helped to that point.
- Kissing Cousins: Played With. Her literal first conversation to Rekka is asking him to marry her. Turns out it was less for affection and more the idea of ending both the Namidare and Banjo bloodlines in one fell swoop.
Chelsea Margaret
A wandering treasure hunter, introduced in Volume 4. Her brother has developed a terminal condition, and so she seeks the Demon's Pot that can grant wishes to cure him.
- What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: The only spell she knows can shrink someone a meter in height and turn them back again. Rekka still manages to find a use for it.
Rosalind C. Bathory
A high school transfer student from overseas, introduced in Volume 4. She is actually an extremely powerful vampire that had been previously defeated by the Namidare bloodline a hundred years ago.
- Achilles' Heel: Silver, which damages her life force directly.
- Hypnotic Eyes: Her charm powers work through eye contact.
- Named After Somebody Famous: Shares her surname with Elizabeth Báthory, a noble commonly associated with blood.
- #1 Dime: An old photo she has of her smiling happily with a certain man, whose face is obscured by a cut from the knife that stabbed her a hundred years ago.
- Our Vampires Are Different: For one, the more powerful a vampire is, the less of the classical weaknesses (sunlight, running water, garlic, etc.) they have. Rosalind is so powerful, her only weakness is silver.
- Revenge: She says she wants revenge on the Namidares for her defeat a hundred years. Rekka eventually realizes, though, that if this was all she wanted, she could have just jumped him in an alley or something.
- Villain Protagonist: She's the main villain of Volume 4, and yet she is a heroine, meaning she has a happy ending Rekka needs to get to - preferably without becoming a vampire himself in the process.
Silver Slayer / Suzuran
A homunculus created by an alchemst two hundred years ago, introduced in Volume 4. Her sole purpose in life is the elimination of the vampire Rosalind C. Bathory.
- Become a Real Boy: How Rekka gets her a happy ending.
- Man of Kryptonite: Her entire body is made of shape-shifting alchemical silver, which is Rosalind's Achilles' Heel. She can even form weapons for others to use out of it.
- Robot Girl: In practice.
- Single-Task Robot: This single task being killing one specific vampire. Afterwards, she has little problem with just standing around until, like a tool left unused, she rusts away.
- Super-Persistent Predator: Is this to Rosalind. She can track her literally anywhere on the planet.
Rain Waterchild
Princess of the merfolk, introduced in Volume 5. Not fond of past decisions her mother made.
- The Unchosen One: According to R, she's not one of Rekka's heroines, at least in her timeline. That doesn't stop Rekka from trying to help her anyway.
Fam
A space pirate, introduced in Volume 5. Her beloved captain has been acting strange as of late.
- Griping About Gremlins: Her species is called gremlins, and their horns emit electronic frequencies that disturb machines around them. She needs to wear a special headband to block them, e
- Walking Techbane: Her natural ability as a gremlin.
Shirley Madagascarwel Blood
A research sciencist, introduced in Volume 5. She's working towards creating her ideal world.
- Bond Villain Stupidity: Wanting the Estashionian adults to suffer as they die, she has them kill themselves very slowly. As such, by the time her control signal is stopped, no one has actually died.
- The Man Behind the Man: Was the one that turned Squallow and the space pirates into cyborgs and had them work to fulfill her revenge.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Her last name is Blood.
- Villain Protagonist: Like Rosalind before her, she's a heroine but still the Big Bad of volume 5.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Turtles.
Midori Tokiwa
A second-year at Rekka's school, introduced in Volume 6. She's the president of the light literature club, and also its only member.
- Childhood Friends: With Momone.
- The Quiet One: Her voice is extremely quiet, to the point that she needs to be basically speaking directly into someone's ear (usually Rekka's) for anyone besides President Momone to hear her.
Momone Kibi
The student council president of Rekka's school, introduced in Volume 6. Her family runs a shrine, resulting in her getting involved in fighting evil spirits.
- Eyepatch of Power: It covers the eye that gives her spirit sight when she's not using it.
- Shrine Maiden: As per the course with being in a family that runs a shrine. She even dresses the part once.
Big Bads
Messiah Kyandistrapps
- And Now You Must Marry Me: He declares Satsuki to be his bride after appearing before her and Rekka.
- Glory Hound: He wants to achieve fame by unveiling the Akashic Records to the world.
- Moment Killer: He interrupts Satsuki's love confession to Rekka.
- Power Parasite: He is said to have killed the God of Magic and stolen his power.
- Summon Magic: He summons a giant snake to kill Rekka.
- World's Best Warrior: He is said to be the world's strongest magician.
The King of Satamonia
- Colony Drop: The challenge he issues against Rekka is to stop a giant meteorite he will send towards Earth.
- Gonk: He is a hideous monster.
- Lecherous Licking: He wants to lick Iris.
- Lust: He wants to marry Iris and is willing to destroy her planet if necessary.
The Demon King
- Achilles' Heel: Holy Magic.
- Adaptive Ability: Combined with Removed Achilles' Heel. He gains immunity to Holy Magic after being defeated with the Hero's Sword long ago.
- Anticlimax Boss: He is completely overpowerd by the laser gun Rekka got from Iris.
- Anti-Magic: He is immune to most magic.
- Gag Censor: His dead head is censored in the manga.
Bahamut
The "Monster Who Defied God," he originally passes himself off as a magical girl mascot-like character to get Rekka's trust.
- Achilles' Heel: The wound on his back.
- The Mole: He became acquainted with Rekka to find out how he defeated Messiah.
Side Characters
Jigen Namidare
- The Chosen One/The Unchosen One: As a Namidare, he also had to be a substitute hero.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: Implied. As a Namidare, he also had to be a substitute hero.
- Dangerous 16th Birthday: By virtue of being a Namidare, after turning 16 he was pulled into heroless stories to be a substitute.
- Heroic Lineage: As a Namidare, he was a hero substitute during early adulthood.
- Mr. Exposition: He explains the Namidare lineage to Rekka.
Satsuki's Father
Satsuki's father and a member of the people who guard the Akashic Records.
- The Faceless: His face was never shown, it was hidden by a cloak.
- Heroic Sacrifice: He is willing to die before handing Satsuki over to Messiah.
- No Man Should Have This Power: He says his family hid the Akashic Records because it is a dangerous and should not fall in the wrong hands.
The Chairman of Owaria
- Full-Name Ultimatum: He uses Iris' full name when ordering her to present herself before the High Council.
- The Needs of the Many: He has to offer Iris to the King of Satamonia because he has to secure the trade routes that provide for his people.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: As a noble, represents the people of Fineritas in the High Council of Owaria.
