    Gex the Gecko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c23f3fb4_5243_48cf_bf49_0e03ced37030.jpeg
Kept ya waiting, huh?
Voiced by: Dana Gould, Leslie Phillips (Enter the Gecko, PAL version), Danny John-Jules (Deep Cover Gecko, PAL version).
The titular snarky gecko.
  • Alliterative Name: Gex the Gecko.
  • Anti-Hero: Gex is exceedingly lazy and only really cares about himself. In the second game, government agents have to bribe Gex with cash (and a nice suit) to convince him to fight Rez, who is on the verge of taking over the world. By the time the third game starts though, he has become more heroic, electing to become a secret agent full time and during the course of the game risks his life to help his girlfriend and some of his relatives.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He is a slothful coach potato, but has amazing martial prowess and can consistently take on incredible threats.
  • Dub Name Change: The Japanese version of Enter The Gecko specifically (where it was known as Spin Tail) changed his name to Reno. Keep in mind, the first game was brought over to Japan with his original name intact, and Gex looks no different in Japan than he did in the Western markets, so this sudden change can come across as confusing to everyone involved.
  • Freudian Excuse: He's a TV-addicted couch potato because TV was the only way he could cope with his father's death. You'd only know this if you read the first game's manual, however.
  • Lovable Lizard: Downplayed. While Gex is a gecko and the protagonist of the series, he is a selfish Anti-Hero in the first two games. Not exactly the innocent type, although his jokes and references help make him a little more likable. He does become more heroic in the third game, though.
  • Nominal Hero: In the first and second game, in the former he is saving himself and in he latter he just trying to get paid. Averted in the third game where goes on the much more selfless goal of saving his girlfriend.
  • Pop-Cultured Badass: Loves sitting on his couch watching TV all day and has accumulated a knowledge of TV references and direct quotes from various movies and TV series.
  • Sad Clown: You wouldn't know it from the games themselves as it's only talked about in the first game's manual, but underneath all his pop-culture spewing and general laziness is someone who never got over the death of his father and has been using TV to escape reality.
  • Speaks In Shoutouts: Many of his quotes come from TV shows and movies.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Is a bit less selfish and more noble in Deep Cover Gecko.

    Gex’s Family
Gex’s often dysfunctional relatives.
  • Acrofatic: Cuz is much fatter than his sleek cousin Gex, but is just as nimble.
  • All in the Manual: Most of the information we have about them come from the instruction manuals and supplemental materials
  • Crusading Widower: Female version. Gex’s father died because of NASA’s negligence, Gex’s mother was understandably utterly furious. After receiving her share of Uncle Charlie’s inheritance, she bought NASA, fired everyone, and converted it into a series of pizza parlors with robotic chimp mascots.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Gex’s father was a loving dad and husband who was the Only Sane Man to his eclectic family. He worked for NASA, but some negligent mistakes on their part resulted in his untimely demise via an exploded rocket.
  • Living Distant Ancestor: Rex the dinosaur, Gex’s primordial ancestor whom he can free from a block of ice in the third game. Doing this lets you play as him.
  • Unexpected Inheritance: Gex’s Uncle Charlie was extremely rich and after his death he left his tremendous wealth to his family.
  • Uncle Pennybags: Uncle Charlie was a pretty good guy to leave his family his entire fortune.

    Rez
Voiced by: Bruce Robertson
The cruel ruler of the Media Dimension and the Big Bad of all three games, intending to ensure the world is subjected to nothing but bad TV shows and Z-grade movies.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: He's the ruler of the Media Dimension, and he has a very deep voice.
  • Big Bad: He is the main villain and final boss of each game.
  • Cyborg: Rez is part reptile, part machine.
  • Egopolis: Rezopolis, to be exact. A huge dystopian city with countless staticky television sets, tons of dangerous machinery, and various animatronic monsters running amok.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Has a very low and metallic voice.
  • For the Evulz: Wants to impose nothing but trashy TV onto the world for his own sick amusement.
  • Hope Crusher: Invoked. In Enter the Gecko, most of Rez's voice lines have him telling Gex that Gex will not survive his current situation, whether it's getting through a level or defeating a boss. This would probably be effective against a more serious protagonist, but Gex is plucky enough that his spirit can't be crushed no matter how hard Rez tries.
Rez: You will never survive Gilligex Isle.
Rez: No one can defeat the Tiki Brothers.
Rez: You'll never stop my creation.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Parodied. He tells Gex he is his father at the end of the second game, claiming he turned into a robotic monster after falling into a scrapheap during an attempt to get free cable. Gex is, understandably, not convinced.
  • Revenge: His motive in the third game, after being beaten by Gex twice he is determined to get back at the gecko.
  • Scary Teeth: Rez has very long and sharp metal teeth to complement his terrifying appearance and voice.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: The franchise is overall a goofy and satirical romp through various pop culture parodies. Its villain, however, is a megalomaniacal despot robot with a terrifying design and voice who isn't involved in much humor.

    Agent Xtra
Portrayed by: Marliece Andrada
A voluptuous secret agent who is the head of the “TV Terrorist Defense Unit”.
  • Ascended Extra: Was mentioned in passing in the second game, became a full fledged character in the third (even if it is just to be kidnapped).
  • Cleavage Window: Her spy suit gives a good view of her ample cleavage.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gets captured by Rez as a way to get back at Gex.
  • Faux Action Girl: Is stated as being one of the best spies in the world, though we don’t actually get to see her do anything.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Given she is played by a Playboy model it is to be expected.
  • Official Couple: With Gex. What she sees in him is anyone’s guess.
  • Stealth Pun: Is indeed an extra in her first appearance.

    Alfred the Tortoise
Voiced by: Marc Silk
Gex’s helpful butler.
  • Exposition Fairy: Supplies Gex with information on basic gameplay, movement, and other random tidbits.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Has supposedly been in service of Gex’s family since they got super rich before the first game, but he debuted in the third game.
  • Servile Snarker: Is mostly courteous to his master, but on occasion he will get uppity and snarky with Gex. Given how Gex is, you can’t really blame him.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Tries to do this in the level "Buccaneer Program". Emphasis on tries.

    Rez' Accomplices

Morphina

The boss of the Cemetery. A lovely ghost woman who becomes a lot more hideous as the battle goes on.
  • All There in the Manual: Her name is not mentioned in the game, but is gotten from the Prima strategy guide. Otherwise, people would confuse her level's name to be her actual name.
  • Shout-Out: To Regan from The Exorcist, though rather than being a little girl being possessed by a demon, Morphina is instead a grown woman ghost who can take on a monstrous form.
  • Turns Red: Do enough damage to her and she becomes a lot uglier and starts vomiting slime at you.

The Flatulator

The boss of New Toonland. A washed up superhero who gets his powers from drinking gas-filled slime.

Sun Snake

The boss of Jungle Isle. A ferocious dragon who constantly pursued Gex up a tall tower.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: An unusual example, the Sun Snake isn't a whole wall but it is constantly chasing you and you can't hurt it. You have to get to the top of the level and with help from a random gorilla drop a pile of boulders onto it.
  • All There in the Manual: As with Morphina, its official name is gotten from the Prima strategy guide.
  • Outside-Genre Foe: It isn't clear why a serpentine western dragon is the boss of the world inspired by Indiana Jones and other jungle related movies. Interestingly this also relates to Gex quotes during the fight, wherein he uses a lot of science-fiction related quotes for some reason.

Toxic Turtle

The boss of Kung Fuville. A cyborg turtle who can shift in size.
  • Shout-Out: A very obvious parody of Gamera, though Toxic Turtle is a lot smaller and seems to be a cyborg. His name also brings to mind the TMNT, particularly how toxic waste originally played a role in their mutation, rather than the alien/mystic mutagen that became the standard in later depictions.

The Tiki Bros.

A bunch of tiki shamans intent on burning Gex. They are fought in the Gilligex Isle channel.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Twice over, you hit them with their own fireballs to knock them into their own boiling cauldron.
  • Tennis Boss: An interesting example. The brothers will throw fireballs at you but you can only throw the blue ones back at them, you also need to take into account the angle you hit the fireball.

Mooshoo Pork

A huge Mad Scientist who is part pig and part cow.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: Gex can't hurt him. The only hope you have is to outrun him to the power switch for his Tesla coils and use it against him.
  • The Dragon: Implied to be Rez's, as he's important enough to have his own boss channel, isn't a parody of other genres like other bosses, and voices his own lines as opposed to Rez taunting the player prior to entering the level.
  • Egopolis: Compared to the Rezopolis levels, Mooshoo has a whole boss channel named after himself.
  • Evil Gloating: Laughs at Gex when he catches him.
  • Fat Bastard: Mooshoo Pork has a huge gut, and is a Mad Scientist in the employ of the Big Bad.
  • High-Class Glass: Wears a big monocle.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: You destroy him by using his own wicked invention against him, shocking him until he is nothing but bones.
  • No OSHA Compliance: Between the Tesla Coils that can zap the careless, the pits of toxic goo, and the rusty steel grates above said pits of goo that will break midway through the fight, its clear that Mooshoo Pork doesn't care for safety protocols.

Mecharez

A huge war machine made in Rez’ image, claimed by him to be his "ultimate creation". Fought in the "Gexzilla vs. Mecharez" boss channel.
  • Behemoth Battle: Is so colossal, Gex needs to be sized up to take it on.
  • Deadly Lunge: One of its attacks is a jet-propelled ramming lunge.
  • Purple Is Powerful: As it's based on Rez's original design, it's decked out in purple chrome.
  • Shout-Out: To Mechagodzilla, though in this case it is a robotic duplicate of a robot.
  • Turns Red: The more damage Gex inflicts on Mecha-Rez, the further its dash attack reaches.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: When it jumps up on a building, Mecharez will engage an echolocator. If you don't smash the building or hide behind another one, the ensuing mouth laser will hit you.

Rock Hard

A smug professional wrestler. Fought in the "WWGex Wrestling" boss channel.
  • Heel: A pretty standard wrestling heel, he is noticeably the chattiest boss in the series and constantly smack talks Gex as they fight.
  • Shout-Out: To various WWE wrestlers, but to "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and The Rock in particular.

"Brain of Oz/Lizard of Oz"

A big floating green brain thing. Fought in the Lizard of Oz boss channel.
  • Boss-Arena Idiocy: Periodically big turrets come out of the ground, they are unmanned so Gex can easily use them to damage the Brain.
  • Evil Laugh: "I will destroy you! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"
  • Homing Projectile: His only attack is spitting out flaming rocks that quickly follow you, though to his credit he spits out so many it becomes difficult to dodge them all.
  • Nerd Glasses: This giant pulsing sharp toothed brain's design is made a less intimidating due to wearing a big bulky pair of glasses.
  • Shout-Out: Setting-wise, to Oscar Diggs from the Oz stories and their adaptations. Appearance-wise, to the Martians from Mars Attacks!.
