Voiced by: Kana Ueda (Japanese) and Andrea Kwan (English, Animax)
The Protagonist of the series, Mikan came all the way from her secluded hometown to Tokyo in order to meet her best friend, Hotaru, in the titular academy. After Narumi discovers that she possesses an Alice, she is enrolled into the academy. While attending, Mikan discovers many truths about herself, her parents, and the dark secrets of the Alice Academy. She has the Nullification Alice and is assigned to the Special ability class.
  • All-Loving Hero: She becomes friends with nearly every person she meets.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Mikan was enrolled in the academy with no knowledge of what her Alice is (or even what Alices are), and blundered her first day so badly that Jinno declared her a "no-star". This causes her classmate to mock her relentlessly about her apparent uselessness.
  • Anti-Magic: Her Alice can essentially cancel out other people's Alices until the other one manifests.
  • Berserk Button: Natsume being a pervert is a quick way to piss her off. This trope gradually faded as their relationship developed
  • Brought Down to Normal: Her Alice is the type that drains from usage, and she uses the last of it to try and save Natsume's life.
  • Butt-Monkey: She gets treated as such at the beginning of the series, but gradually shook off the status.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: She makes one with Natsume.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: She frequently throws herself into danger for other people, including Sumire and Natsume before she actually becomes friends with them.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Her thoughts have a tendency to wander into strange places, such as when Narumi tries to explain what Alice Academy is like and she immediately pictures things akin to alien experiments.
  • Cool Big Sis: Becomes one for Youichi.
  • Country Mouse: She's constantly in awe of the academy's events due to their extravagance compared to her small school's.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has brown eyes and brown hair just like her mom.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Partially subverted at first. She was raised by her grandfather but later gets to meet her mother. Unfortunately, her mother dies soon afterward.
  • Determinator: Boy, is this girl ever. She is constantly pushing against the status quo of the academy.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Birthday: Mikan's birthday is registered as January 1st because that was the day her grandfather adopted her. It's later revealed that her actual birthday is May 17th.
  • First Kiss: With Natsume, although it was accidental.
  • Genki Girl: No matter what, she always tries to keep her spirits up.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She always wears her hair as such.
  • Happily Adopted: Her grandfather was actually a random bystander who Yuka left her with, but he developed a strong family bond with baby Mikan and fully adopted her as his own.
  • Lamarck Was Right: She inherited both of her Alices from her parents.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: She's forced to forget her time at Alice Academy, when her powers fade.
  • Love Triangle: With Ruka and Natsume. She ultimately choose Natsume.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name, which means mandarin orange, was the color of Izumi Yukihira's Alice stones.
  • Mega Manning: The Alice inherited from her mother allows her to do so.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her father was accidentally killed by Persona and her mother unwillingly abandoned her in order to avoid Kuonji's people chasing her.
  • Power Incontinence: At the beginning, she doesn't actually know how to control her Alice and it's random whether she'll cancel out another Alice or be affected by it. She grows out of this trope as the series progresses.
  • Power Nullifier: Her initial Alice. She inherited it from her father, Yukihira Izumi.
  • Power Parasite: Several chapters later, it is revealed that she also inherits her mother's Stealing Alice.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Lives with her grandfather her whole life, and doesn't know who her parents are. Though he isn't her real grandfather.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Is the naive, chronically in trouble Red to Hotaru's Blue.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Many of the faculty members have suspicions about Mikan's parentage such as Narumi, Noda, and Jinno, with her appearance being close to her mother and her personality and her initial alice being close to her father's.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Type 1 With Hotaru and type 2 with Natsume and overlaps with Belligerent Sexual Tension.

Hotaru Imai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hotaru_inventions.jpg
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya
Hotaru is Mikan's best friend, who left for Alice Academy at the beginning of the series, and was the reason for Mikan's eventual enrollment in the academy. She possesses the Invention Alice, which grants her the ability to build robots and other useful devices. She is in the Technical ability class and is a three-star student.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's smart, has many admirers, and very rarely displays emotion on her face. The only person she really lets her guard down for is Mikan.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: She can be rather cold and apathetic toward Mikan, but her main motivation for doing well in Alice Academy in the first place was to be able to visit Mikan again.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Kisses Mikan after pushing her away so she can find her mother.
  • Big Eater: Besides money, her other big love is food. She'll spend her time during parties situated at the food table and when she's temporarily demoted to 2-star, she takes half of Mikan's food since the demotion was her fault.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Her Anti-Baka weapons make her the Tsukkomi to Mikan's Boke.
  • Child Prodigy: Is inventing robots and spy cams and weapons at the age of 10. Even among Academy students, she's noted to be exceptional.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Gets better and warmer over the course of the series, though everyone notes she's nicest when Mikan's around.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Her Alice allows her to excel in inventing, to the point that her ability is at a 3-star rating (which very few elementary schoolers have).
  • Heroic Sacrifice: By the end of the series, she and her brother are fated to forever wander through time due to their interference with Natsume's fate.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She rescues Natsume by breaking the laws of time, all for Mikan.
  • Money Fetish: She enjoys making money, whether it's through blackmailing other students to winning competitions with her inventions.
  • Not So Stoic: The events of the climax frequently cause her demeanor to crack. It pretty much shatters when she and her brother decide to sacrifice themselves for Natsume.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Serves as this to Mikan. Besides the Pseudo-Romantic Friendship aspects, Hotaru often serves as Mikan's motivation to act. It's her transfer to Alice Academy that causes Mikan to follow her, Hotaru's memory is what brings back most of Mikan's memories and she abandons a normal life to search for Hotaru.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Especially with Mikan who brings out her caring side.
  • Tsundere: Will gladly whack Mikan over the head with objects, acts annoyed around her and calls her baka all the time. However, it's noted that the first time she ever smiled in Alice Academy was when Mikan showed up.
  • Unwanted Harem: From upperclassmen to millionaires, she loathes her admirers and will often insult or hide from them.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Type 1 With Mikan though she genuinely cares for her.

  • Rank Up: Becomes the Elementary School Principal after Kuonji's demise.
  • Sadist Teacher: He has no qualms about using his Alice on the kids who are yet to enter puberty.
  • Shock and Awe: His Alice allows him to control electricity, which he channels through his baton.
  • Sore Loser: Anyone who gets stuck on his team during the sports festival is in danger of facing his wrath if they lose.
  • Stern Teacher: He's he one teacher that the rambunctious elementary schoolers don't mess with.
  • Stoic Spectacles
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Type A with Izumi.

Misaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gakuen_alice_manga_v23_jp_cover.jpg
The Elementary Division's science teacher, as well as the supervisor of the Technical Ability class. His Alice is "Plant creation".
  • Butt-Monkey: Is often picked on by Narumi during their school years. And even during their adult years.
  • Chick Magnet: To his dismay, he has a lot of fangirls in the Technical Class.
  • Green Thumb: His Alice makes him skilled at botany.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Narumi.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being introduced around the same time as Narumi, he doesn't play a huge part and gets very little focus compared to his friend.

Noda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/17566113.jpg
The oft-absent supervisor of the Special Ability class who has the ability of Time Travel.
  • Affectionate Nickname: The Special Ability class affectionately calls him Nodacchi.
  • Butt-Monkey: Whenever he returns from his prolonged absences, his students would greet him by beating him up.
  • Chekhov's Skill: His Time Travel skills are mostly used as an excuse for his absence and is treated as a joke. It is later used to help Mikan and her friends learn the truth of her mother, father, and the elementary school principal. It's also used to save Natsume from dying.
  • Eyes Always Shut
  • Perpetual Smiler: He's always seen with a dumb smile on his expression.
  • Power Incontinence: Due to his inability to control his Alice, he is often taken through time warps at random, for indefinite periods of times, resulting to his frequent absence from the storyline.

Persona/Rei Serio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gakuen_alice_manga_v09_jp_cover.jpg
The supervisor of the Dangerous Ability class and the one who sends Natsume to his missions. His Alice is known as Corrosion, which decays and eventually kills everything he touches.
  • Anti-Villain: He is an antagonist for most of the series, but only because the Elementary School Principal is manipulating his vulnerabilities.
  • The Atoner: He goes full throttle on this trope in the final arc. It gets to the point that when Mikan requests that he never harm anyone again with his Alice (including decaying the floor below them), he decides to use his body as a human shield for her and use his Alice to decay the weapons instead.
  • Babies Ever After: He has a daughter with Nobara after the time skip.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He dotes on Nobara due to her approaching him as a child with no fear.
  • Birds of a Feather: He finds himself attached to Nobara due to their similar backgrounds of abandonment.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Both his eyes and hair are black due to his Alice.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His childhood is a very harsh string of Trauma Conga Line. He was abandoned at birth by his parents due to his Alice and was taken in by the Academy. But his powers were too dangerous even for the school to handle, so he was locked up in a room beneath the Hana Hime den. The only person who was nice to him was Izumi, whose Nullification Alice made him immune to Persona's Mark of Death. But then the ESP manipulated him into believing that Izumi was responsible for locking him up and when Rei confronted him about this, his outburst inflicted Izumi with a curse so strong that even his Nullification Alice could not handle it, thus killing him. Rei's confusion when he realized that his power had killed the only person who had cared about him broke his spirit.
  • Declaration of Protection: In the final arc, he dedicates his life to protecting Mikan from the ESP, to the point that he uses his body as a human shield to help her escape.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Sometimes appears as this because of the black lips and power-limiting jewelry. He also uses this trope to his advantage during the Christmas party when he disguises himself as a female fortuneteller to catch Narumi off guard and inflict his Alice on him.
  • Happily Married: With Nobara at the end of the story.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Persona defects from the ESP after Mikan uses her Alice to save Nobara from the effects of his Alice and accepts his apology for accidentally killing her father.
  • Make Them Rot: His Alice causes anything he touch to rot to death.
  • Teacher/Student Romance:With Nobara.
  • Parental Abandonment: Due to his Alice, he was abandoned as a baby.
  • Power Incontinence: The reason why he needs all those Power Limiters is because he can't control his Alice and his "curse" can accidentally kill anyone or anything that comes into contact with him and decays his own body.
  • Power Limiter: The rings and earring he wears are Alice-controlling devices. If any one of them breaks, his power will go out of control and consume him.
  • Walking Wasteland: When his emotions flare up, even his mere presence is able to affect the surrounding area. He later learns to use this to his advantage to protect Mikan from the ESP.

Kazumi Yukihira

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gakuen_alice_manga_v20_jp_cover.jpg
The Principal of the High school division, who possesses the Alices of "Longetivity" and "Alice detection". He is the older brother of Izumi Yukihira, the former instructor of the Special Ability class.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Unlike his playful younger brother, Kazumi is very serious and intimidating — often beating up Izumi if he fools around too much.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: His Alice allows him to live forever, and is apparently a very rare power. But he has virtually no combat ability, and is pretty much defenceless against Alice attacks.
  • Cool Uncle: Becomes one to Mikan upon meeting her.
  • Icy Blue Eyes
  • Long Lost Sibling: He and Izumi never knew of each other until the latter was in his late teens, and they only met in person once Izumi showed up to teach at Alice Academy.
  • Older Than They Look: Due to his Longetivity Alice, he has a very young appearance despite being about 50 during his first appearance.
  • The Stoic: He typically doesn't show much emotion except for when he finds out his younger brother is dead.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: His other Alice allows him to detect if someone has an Alice.

Himemiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shizu_1.jpg
The Principal of the Middle School division who is also known as the goddess protector for her Barrier alice. She is often referred by the students as Hii-sama.
  • Barrier Maiden: She uses her Alice to create protective barriers around the Academy, thus her reputation as the school's goddess protector.
  • Covert Pervert: She drools over pretty girls and fantasizes about them. Hotaru calls her weirdo right on her face.
  • Does Not Like Men: Famously detests men and would not allow males to enter her residence, the Hana Hime Den. The only men she doesn't mind are Kazumi (who is friends with him) and Shiki (who is a distant relative of hers). Which is not quite unreasonable, since the men that she shows hatred with are either idiots, jerkasses, or downright evil.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: One of the oldest characters in the series and dresses in kimonos.
  • Older Than They Look: She has Kazumi's Longetivity Alice inserted in her body, so she can have the appearance of a young maiden despite being in her 60s.

Kuonji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luna100x191.jpg
The Principal of the Elementary School division and the Big Bad of the entire series. Although he looks like a child, he is a manipulative person and the students are warned to stay away from him. He has the Clone Alice.

  • Big Bad: He is the reason for everything wrong with Alice Academy.
  • Forceful Kiss: On Yuka.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Luna, his most loyal follower who he had manipulated into turning against her only friend, kills him by stealing his soul.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Big time.
  • Older Than They Look: His body shrunk to that of a child when Yuka sought to avenge Izumi and stuck too many Alice stones in his body. Had Luna didn't kill him when he finally loses, he might regress further down to a helpless infant.
  • Sadist Teacher: He uses many of the students for his own gain. Notably Luna, Yuka (until she's saved by her friends), and Rei.
  • Self-Duplication: His Alice allows him to create clones of himself. Unlike Misaki's Doppelganger Alice however, those clones can be active indefinitely. The clones that he directly created can also create clones of themselves as well. The more clones are made from those clones that are not directly created by Kuonji, the less control he has on them.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He doesn't give a crap about his students and is willing to send them on dangerous missions or have his security force put them down.
  • 0% Approval Rating: None of the faculty members of all departments like him at all. So those students who are forced to work under him. They only raise arms against him when they witness how low he can get to achieve his goals, particularly against Mikan and her loved ones.
