This page covers Fire Emblem Fates characters hailing from Hoshido and encountered in the Birthright route.

In General

  • Badass Family: Ryoma, Corrin, Hinoka, Takumi, and Sakura are all siblings, and can be REALLY badass.
  • Battle Theme Music: There are three boss themes associated with Hoshido. One ("Rage in the Light") is for the unplayable Hoshidans, another ("Misery in Hand") is for playable Hoshidans, and the last ("You of the Light") is used for the Hoshidan siblings. However, for Takumi, he will use the theme associated with the normal Revelation bosses ("Puppet's Feast") for the battles with him in chapters 13 and 23 of Conquest, foreshadowing Anankos's influence and eventual control over him. As the Final Boss of Conquest, he uses "End of All (Land)". In addition, Queen Mikoto and Sumeragi (when exposed) will use the boss theme reserved for major Valla enemies ("Destiny by Blood") as they are spirits and thralls under Anankos's control by the time you directly fight them.
  • Broken Pedestal: Corrin to the Hoshidan siblings upon siding with Nohr or if they side with nobody, though they get better in this latter case — and without dying like in the former one:
    • While Ryoma in Conquest can't comprehend why Corrin would choose their adopted family over them, even after Corrin learned that King Garon killed their parents, he subverts it by believing they're either brainwashed or misguided and tries to bring them back home. At least until Chapter 25 — then it's played straight after Corrin is forced to claim they killed Hinoka, causing a horrified and enraged Ryoma to denounce them and swear to kill them himself. He gets better after learning Hinoka's alive, but it's sadly just in time for him to kill himself to spare Corrin from a Sadistic Choice.
    • Surprisingly subverted in Revelation. Ryoma retains a degree of faith in Corrin's character precisely because of the comparative extremity of their choice, refusing to believe they'd do something so drastic as turn on both their families — and thus become an enemy of the whole world — without a very good reason. However, he does remain rather peeved that Corrin doesn't just tell them what that reason is (which is complicated by how Corrin can't talk about the secret kingdom of Valla manipulating the war without dying from its curse).
    • Takumi claims this as his justification for hating Corrin in all routes at first, but especially so in Conquest where Corrin has effectively turned their back on their birth family for the one that kidnapped them. In Chapter 23 of Conquest, upon his defeat, he even admits that he had wanted them to be family again. When Corrin goes back to Nohr, he takes it as though they didn't care at all, which deeply hurt him. This in turn drives him over the edge and makes him vulnerable to Anankos' control, leaving him literally a shell of his old self by the end.
    • Hinoka sees Corrin this way in Conquest and the first parts of Revelation. The former, though, is more true to this as, after years of training for the day she could rescue them from Nohr, Corrin elects to return there of their own accord despite all the effort Hinoka put into reuniting with them. Upon being defeated for the final time in Conquest, she fully expects Corrin to execute her and is genuinely shocked when they don't, having by then replaced the image of the loving sibling she spent years trying to save with that of an apathetic conqueror who feels nothing for them. She gets a bit better by the end, though by how much is arguable.
    • Even Sakura shares this in Conquest, mixed with stunned confusion as to why the sibling they heard so much about from their mother and elders would seemingly turn on them, or even possibly attack her themselves. She's still the lesser example among her siblings, though, as she still wishes to have gotten to know Corrin all throughout — although Corrin not being able to keep Garon from executing Sakura's forces might have damaged that. She does get better after the war, though — enough to speak with them, at least.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Each of the siblings is a marriageable option for an opposite-sex Corrin. It does turn out later that they are not actual blood relatives at all — he/she is the son/daughter of Mikoto and the Silent Dragon Anankos, while the others are the children of Sumeragi and the previous queen Ikona; Sumeragi married Mikoto with his eldest two children in tow and raised Corrin as his own. However, Corrin can marry them well before this information comes to light (though they do learn this in the S-Supports via a letter from Mikoto), and the Support/My Castle dialogues aren't shy about playing up the brother/sister complex angle.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • The Hoshidans blame Mikoto's death on Nohr, seemingly forgetting that the barrier she'd set up prevents Nohrians from acting on any animosity while in Hoshido. Since Ganglari still needed someone to activate it, the only people who could have done it would be a Hoshidan or a creature without a will of its own, like a Faceless.
    • Partially subverted on Conquest and Revelation, since most Hoshidans (barring all the royals except Takumi) accuse Corrin, a secretly adopted Hoshidan raised by Nohr, of killing Mikoto, apparently thinking they were the one to trigger the Ganglari. However, many still don't acknowledge there was a second person involved and it doesn't excuse their not addressing it at all in Birthright.
  • Fantastic Racism: Many characters from Hoshido express their feelings of Nohr in varying degrees, but several notably hate it. Oboro has a Personal Skill that makes her do more damage to Nohrian characters, Takumi is very vocal about his dislike of Nohr, and Hinoka has dialogue that has her shouting "Nohrian scum!".
  • Foil:
    • Corrin's Nohr family is this as a whole to their Hoshido family, each prince and princess foiling their individual counterpart. Xander is a stoic From Zero to Hero while Ryoma is a quick-tempered Ace, yet both are devoted older brother-mentor figures to their families. Hinoka is tomboyish and principled while Camilla is womanly and single-minded, but both have devoted their lives to Corrin's safety. Takumi is a judgmental bow-wielder while Leo is a ruthless magic-wielder, yet both are quite nice when they warm up to someone and suffer from being the middle-child. Elise is exuberant and optimistic while Sakura is soft-spoken and shy, yet both are very generous and kind-natured healers.
    • This also comes through on their behavior in the respective routes, barring one respective exception. Barring Elise, the Nohrian royals in Birthright all accept Corrin's choice as both irrevocable and their own decision, addressing them as an enemy (if not reluctantly). Meanwhile, barring Takumi, the Hoshidan royals in Conquest refuse to accept Corrin's decision and even denounce it as brainwashing or trickery, trying until the end to take them back.
    • The same contrasts go for most of their respective retainers as well — With the exception of the tailor's child Oboro, a majority of the Hoshidan retainers came from wealthy or prestigious families, or had a family tradition of serving the royalty, while most of the Nohrian retainers are people who either grew up on the streets or were criminals and mercenaries.
  • Fragile Speedster: A lot of the units the Hoshido characters have access to have very terrible defense and health. However, many are capable of double striking (thanks to some of the higher speed growths for some of the Hoshido characters), have skills that wear enemies down like Seal Defense and Poison Strike, and rely on flying units more than the Nohrian counterparts. Also doubles as Glass Cannon in some cases.
  • Happily Adopted: As it turns out, Mikoto is only the biological mother of Corrin; the others are the children of Sumeragi and the previous queen Ikona. Nonetheless, Ryoma, Hinoka, Takumi, and Sakura all loved and respected Mikoto as if she was their real mother, and mourn her passing deeply.
  • Hero Antagonist: In Conquest, where they are still portrayed as the more morally upstanding nation compared to Nohr.
  • A Lighter Shade of Grey: Overall, while the game runs on Grey-and-Gray Morality, Hoshido is treated as more sympathetic. Nohr is the unquestioned aggressor in the war, all of the genuinely evil characters are aligned directly against Hoshido, and the true mastermind is hiding in Nohr's shadows.
  • Not Blood Siblings: Corrin's S-supports with their Hoshidan siblings reveal that Mikoto actually already had Corrin when she came to Hoshido and met Sumeragi. The Hoshidan royal family are actually their stepsiblings.
  • Primary-Color Champion: Hoshido is framed as the just defending nation with Nohr as the anti villainous invading force. The royal family members all have both red, blue, and white in their costumes accordingly.
  • Red Is Heroic: Red is a prominent colour on all the royals' clothing. Interestingly, Takumi, who is the meanest of the family and the least willing to work with Corrin, also has the least red.
  • Sarashi: Most of the women of Hoshido (including Azura) bind their chests with sarashi when they go to the hot spring in My Castle, the only exceptions being Orochi and Kagero (due to their large bust sizes).
  • Sibling Team: Any of the royals and Corrin can be this with one another on the Birthright and Revelation routes using the Pair Up mechanic, though Corrin is Not Blood Siblings with the others.
  • Square Race, Round Class: Hoshido in general has a lot more units than average who don't fit the classes they're assigned for, often having some very uncharacteristic if not outright lopsided growth rates for the classes they roll up in. Some examples of this include Hinata (a Samurai/Swordmaster with tanky Mighty Glacier growth stats), Subaki (a Sky Knight/Falcon Knight with terrible Speed and Resistance but very high HP, Defense and Skill), Rinkah (a Oni Savage/Oni Chieftain with below average HP and Strength but above average Speed and Skill and a monstrous Defense growth) and Azama (a Monk/Great Master who's a Magically Inept Lightning Bruiser). In most of their cases, the best solution is either to reclass them to a more ergonomically-fitting class, or take a gamble and hope that their increased growths to their blind spots as a class helps dramatically improve them.
  • Sword and Sorcerer: The Hoshidan siblings and their retainers fit this pattern as well as Short Range Guy, Long Range Guy. In contrast, out of the Nohrian siblings, only Elise and her retainers do.
  • The Team: If the player decides to side with Hoshido, their team of siblings will consist of Corrin as a Charismatic Leader and The Heart overall. Takumi is The Lancer to The Hero of Corrin for most of the story, being haughty, aggressive, and distrusting. Hinoka is The Big Girl, for her tough tomboyish attitude, being the most physically fit out of all the siblings. Sakura is The Heart, being the emotional center demure girl of the siblings. Ryoma is last to join and while he would typically be The Leader, allows himself to be The Ace Number Two to Corrin's campaign, and functionally more of a Team Dad or Big Good. Azura is a Mysterious Waif that stays on the outskirts of the team and keeps the most secrets on the Birthright path.
  • White-and-Grey Morality: If one sides with Hoshido and doesn't see it as Grey-and-Gray Morality, due to Nohr being technically the aggressor of the war.
  • With Us or Against Us: Played straight in the third route, with everyone but Sakura believing Corrin betrayed Hoshido by not picking a side. They do eventually come around, but it takes time and effort.
  • Wutai: Their dress, names, and architecture all take obvious cues from medieval Japan.
