Main Playable Characters
Clyde Brightstar
The game’s protagonist and the youngest boxing champion in Eagleton’s history at age 20. Clyde has a deep-seated hatred for his father Baron and wants to prove himself the better man.
- Blood Knight: “Testing his fighting skills” is listed as one of his likes, and he joined the tournament in order to do just that.
- Boxing Battler: His fighting style incorporates many boxing moves.
- Clark Kent Outfit: The “Boxer” costume shows that Clyde is quite muscular under his jacket.
- Extremity Extremist: His moveset consist entirely of punches, as is standard for a boxer.
- Ground Punch: Meteor Slam has Clyde slam his fist into the ground
- Hates Their Parent: Hates his father, Baron, for abandoning the family long ago.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Arrogant and stubborn, but cares about others nonetheless.
- Playing with Fire: His aspect, Flame Jacket, allows him to light his hands and forearms on fire. It also gives him extreme heat resistance.
- Shoryuken: Inferno Upper serves as a very traditional one of these.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Spaghetti, according to his profile.
Annie Dasteel
A young engineer/mechanic who entered the Duels of Fortune tournament to win enough money to save her aunt and uncle’s family business from going bankrupt.
- Assist Character: Her Robot Buddy Gizmo comes in to provide fire during both her supers.
- Child Prodigy: She invented her Robot Buddy Gizmo when she was 10. Justified, as her aspect makes her brain operate much more efficiently than the average person.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Invented a variety of weapons and tools that she uses in battle.
- Glass Cannon: Has a wide variety of zoning tools, but is tied for the lowest health in the game.
- Handicapped Badass: Was born without a right arm due to a birth defect, so she decided to make her own prosthetic.
- Improbable Weapon User: Annie’s standing light attack has her strike her opponent with a screwdriver.
- Nice Girl: Is kind to just about everyone.
- Rocket Punch: Her prosthetic can be used as one of these.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Vanilla Cake, according to her profile.
Sir Rattlebone
The former commander of a band of knights during the Great Skeleton War, Sir Rattlebone was brought back to life again by a necromancer to serve him, but refused. Afterwards, he decided to enter the Duels of Fortune tournament to uncover the truth behind it.
- Back from the Dead: Was brought back to life as a skeleton twice, first as a commander in the Great Skeleton War 500 years ago, and second shortly before the tournament.
- Dem Bones: In case it wasn’t obvious, he’s a skeleton.
- Detachment Combat: He detaches one of his arms to extend his reach in his Double Jointed attack, and Skull Toss has him throwing his head at the opponent.
- Fish out of Temporal Water: He’s rather confused by how much the world has changed in 500 years.
- Guest Fighter: Made his debut as one in Schwarzerblitz.
- Heroes Prefer Swords: One of the most heroic characters in the game, and he uses a sword.
- Jack of All Stats: Has a balanced moveset covering all ranges.
- Nice Guy: He’s very polite and honorable, never showing a bad bone in his body (no pun intended).
- Paper-Thin Disguise: One of his alternate costumes has him attempting to disguise himself as a human by wearing a hoodie and a pair of Groucho Marx glasses.
Sylvan Blackjack
The CEO of the Diamondeye Company and organizer of the Duels of Fortune tournament.
- Bad Boss: People unfortunate enough to work under him are generally treated like dirt.
- Big Bad: Is set up to be this.
- Clark Kent Outfit: If his Shirtless costume is any indication, he’s absolutely shredded.
- Corrupt Corporate Executive: A CEO and the game’s main antagonist.
- Evil Old Folks: He’s 70 years old and willing to do anything for his own profit.
- Fallen Hero: Used to be a scientist who helped save the world from a plague, but afterward sought to fill the void of grandeur in his life by profiting at the cost of others.
- Final Boss: Of Arcade Mode.
- Greed: Sylvan is willing to do anything for money, to the point that his profile has it as the only thing listed under his likes.
- Improbable Weapon User: Fights with playing cards as his primary weapons.
- Jerkass: Treats those he sees as lesser than himself like garbage, and all of his dialogue is either him putting on a show, insulting his opponent, or both.
- Large Ham: While the game doesn’t have any voice acting, many of Sylvan’s movements are very theatrical.
- Magikarp Power: In gameplay, Sylvan starts off very weak, but gets more powerful every time he draws an ace with his command normals. Upon drawing all four, he enters Full House Mode and becomes much more powerful until it runs out.
- Older Than They Look: Despite being 70, the only indicator of his age is his gray hair.
- Professional Gambler: Got rich from hitting the jackpot, and several of his attacks are based on gambling.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: The Shirtless Sylvan costume is unlocked by beating Arcade Mode on Hard, and it shows off his well-defined muscles in full glory.
Shoto Kanji
A student at Master Locks’ dojo who joined the Duels of Fortune tournament on his master’s recommendation.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Alluded to in his profile, where he mentions something involving “family” as the reason he’s so emotionless nowadays.
- Deadly Doctor: Has an alternate costume where he dresses as a doctor and throws pills as projectiles.
- Glass Cannon: His moveset is quite powerful, but he’s tied with Annie for the lowest health in the game.
- Punny Name: Contains “shotokan”, a style of karate.
- Shock and Awe: Shoto’s aspect, Raijin, allows him to generate and fire electricity from his hands.
- Shotoclone: Has the traditional moveset for this trope, but unusually, he is not well-balanced at all, being more focused on relentlessly rushing down his opponent with very few defensive options.
- The Stoic: He’s basically emotionless and unwilling to talk about anything not related to karate.
Cole “Red” Maxwell
A street thug who entered the Duels of Fortune tournament to stop a major threat in his home city of Capital.
- Batter Up!: Wields a baseball bat in his Gakuran costume.
- Dogged Nice Guy: His unique intro and win quotes against Annie show that he’s this towards her.
- EX Special Attack: Red builds up Rage as he deals and takes damage, which can in turn be spent to power up his special moves.
- Japanese Delinquents: The inspiration for his Gakuran costume, even though Red himself isn’t Japanese.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Acts brash and rude, but is willing to put himself in harm’s way for the sake of his friends.
- Real Men Wear Pink: Enjoys cooking, although he’ll deny it if you ask him about it.
Captain Shiverskull
A skeleton captain and longtime rival of Rattlebone. He entered the Duels of Fortune tournament as one of Sylvan’s “tournament mercenaries”.
- Ax-Crazy: He’s nothing if not ruthless and unhinged.
- Back from the Dead: Like Rattlebone, this happened to him twice.
- Benevolent Boss: Despite all his vices, Shiverskull has his crew listed as one of his likes, and they in turn have Undying Loyalty towards him.
- Dem Bones: Once again, in case it wasn’t obvious.
- Empowered Badass Normal: Was a fearsome pirate in life, and after coming back a second time, he’s gained an aspect allowing him to summon ghostly swords.
- Eyepatch of Power: Wears one over his right eye.
- The Rival: Views himself as Rattlebone’s.
Doodle
An egotistical stick figure whose games have been cancelled three times. He has hijacked the game in order to finally give himself a starring role.
- Charge-Input Special: Doodle is notable for being the only character to have these.
- Fourth-Wall Observer: He’s perfectly aware he’s in a video game, and even narrates his own character profile.
- Hostile Show Takeover: Became a playable character because he wanted the spotlight back.
- Non-Standard Character Design: Being a stick figure in a game composed of 3D models, this was inevitable.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: If left idle for long enough (about 25 seconds), he’ll leave the stage, causing the opponent to win a round.
Callowman
A self-proclaimed superhero who goes around punching things. He is listed as a non-canon character, completely unrelated to the Duels of Fortune tournament.
- Achievements in Ignorance: Managed to stop Shooting Star’s evil schemes completely on accident.
- Cloudcuckoolander: He has a very tenuous grasp on reality.
- Dumb Muscle: Strong enough to rip holes in spacetime, but at the same time a bumbling idiot.
- The Grappler: Callowman has a command grab and a command grab super, and generally follows the rules the archetype operates under in fighting games.
- Lantern Jaw of Justice: His chin is absolutely massive!
- Lightning Bruiser: Surprisingly for a grappler, he’s fairly fast while also having the highest health in the game. However, his actual defensive options are lacking.
- One-Hit Kill: His Villain Vanquisher super becomes one when fully powered up. However, this is quite hard to do in practice.
- Practical Taunt: Taunting as Callowman powers up his next command grab, and up to 5 taunts can be stacked at once. In addition, the taunt can also knock down opponents.
- Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: He does this in his Callow Rush super
Black Heart
A rare species of alien called an id that feeds off the emotional energy of others. By feeding off Clyde’s hatred for his father, Black Heart is able to turn into a near-perfect copy of Clyde.
- Blob Monster: Black Heart’s default form, which they shift into during some of their animations.
- Dark Is Evil: Wears a dark outfit and has “black” in his name while being an antagonistic figure.
- Evil Knockoff: Of Clyde, even using an exact copy of his aspect.
- It's All About Me: Views everyone else as a tool for their own gain/amusement.
- Jerkass: Deliberately pisses people off because they feed off negative emotions.
- Worthy Opponent: Views The Masked Oni as one, taking an interest in him and wanting to fight him again. Played with in that this might just be due to Oni's high amount of negative energy.
ERROR CS 1501
A being born in an Eldritch Location where the remains of collapsed universes are said to end up. Another non-canon character unrelated to the events of the Duels of Fortune tournament.
- Glitch Entity: It gives off the vibes of this, emanating code from its being and constantly T-posing.
- Horrifying the Horror: Manages to freak out Black Heart of all people with its presence.
- Losing Your Head: Its Integer Overflow super causes its head to grow and bounce across the screen as a projectile.
- Mechanically Unusual Fighter: Even compared to the rest of the cast, ERROR is unique, including a move that teleports the opponent, a move that pulls in the opponent, a command that allows it to fly around freely, and two supers that act very differently than anything else other cast members have. Not to mention the fact that it’s always T-posing!
- Secret Character: Doesn’t appear on the character select screen, but you can still select it by holding Start while selecting Random.
- Video Game Flight: Its Delete Gravity special allows it to fly around freely for a period of time.
Baron Brightstar
Clyde’s father and a former member of Solution. After accidentally killing a man, he was sent to prison, but Sylvan struck a deal with him, allowing him to go free in exchange for becoming one of his “tournament mercenaries”.
- Anti-Villain: He may be one of Sylvan’s tournament mercenaries, but Baron still wants to go back to the family he abandoned long ago.
- Blood Knight: Baron wants nothing more than to fight a Worthy Opponent, but his massive strength prevents that from happening.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Once a member of Solution, Baron later became a boxer to support his family, until his aspect became too powerful, preventing him from having any meaningful challenge. This eventually led to him abandoning his family to find a purpose in life, but some time after that he accidentally killed a man in a blind rage and was sentenced to several years in prison. It says something that one of Baron’s dislikes listed in his profile is “his past”.
- Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: The reason he abandoned his family.
- The Grappler: A much more traditional one than Callowman, going full in on the Mighty Glacier aspect.
- Ground Punch: Baron can do this with enough force to create tremors that can hit grounded opponents from a distance.
- Mighty Glacier: Baron is very powerful, but he’s also the only character in the game who can’t dash forward.
- No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: Strongly believes this, and being unable to get any challenge has been a big part of his issues.
- Perpetual Frowner: Is practically never seen smiling.
- World's Strongest Man: Baron is stated to be this by the devs.
Justin Ormal Guy
An office worker born without an aspect.
- The Everyman: The basis for his design.
- I Know Mortal Kombat: Learned most of his moves from watching tournaments and action movies. This does not make him a competent fighter, however.
- Joke Character: A completely ordinary businessman who is not in any way a trained fighter. The in-game tips even mention that managing to win an evenly-matched fight with him is the mark of a truly skilled player!
- Lethal Joke Character: That being said, if he manages to get an opponent into the corner, he can do massive damage.
- Jumped at the Call: Upon hearing that the winner of the Duels of Fortune tournament would get one wish granted, Guy jumped at the opportunity.
- Last-Name Basis: Prefers to simply be called Guy.
- Nervous Wreck: Very anxious and always worrying about running late or being able to pay rent.
- Punny Name: His full name sounds like “just a normal guy”, which describes him pretty well.
- Status Buff: Can drink coffee to temporarily increase his speed, at the cost of it decreasing his speed when the buff runs out.
Boss Characters
Shooting Star
The leader of the Star Forces who has a grudge against Callowman.
- Galactic Conqueror: Is implied to be one of these.
- Long-Range Fighter: Almost exclusively uses projectiles with very few close-range attacks.
- Villain of Another Story: At one point, he attempted to take over Callowman’s home planet but was foiled by Callowman on accident.
Tiny Evil Clyde
A creature that looks like Clyde, only tiny and evil.
- Fragile Speedster: Tied for the lowest health of any boss character, but incredibly fast.
- Lethal Joke Character: Looks harmless, but is on the same level as the other SNK Boss characters.
Zorb
A spherical alien with a bad temper.
- Ambiguous Gender: The Zorb fought has its gender listed as “unknown”.
- Breath Weapon: Fires the deadly Wrath Beam out of its mouth.
- The Captain: Is apparently the captain of a starship.
- Genius Bruiser: Very intelligent, despite its rage issues.
- Unstoppable Rage: The reason the player must fight it in the first place.
The Pill
The Unity Engine default pill, and one of the most dangerous opponents in Mission Mode.
- Fighting Clown: It’s the Unity Engine default pill, but it’s still among the toughest opponents in the game.
- Glass Cannon: Has a wide variety of annoying attacks, but its health is quite low.
- Grappling-Hook Pistol: Grappling Hook Shotgun, in this case.
- Short-Range Shotgun: Wields one as its weapon.
- Super Mode: Ultimate God Shotgun enhances its shotgun attacks.
Masked Oni
A mysterious masked man and the True Final Boss of Arcade Mode.
- Ambiguously Human: His bio isn’t sure if he’s human or not.
- Lightning Bruiser: The main reason why he’s so dangerous is that he’s fast, hits hard, and can take a hit too.
- Pyromaniac: Sets fire to Master Locks' dojo.
- The Spook: Not much is known about him. He's implied to have a connection to Master Locks, though, and Black Heart states he has "seriously unnatural levels of negative energy".
- True Final Boss: Only fought in Arcade Mode if you meet certain conditions.
The Mask
A Living Dream added as a boss in the Halloween 2022 update.
- Damage-Sponge Boss: It has the highest health of any boss, further increased by its Healing Factor.
- Golden Super Mode: It can access one of these, becoming much more powerful.
- Healing Factor: Gains one as Golden Mask.
- Jump Scare: The namesake of one of its supers, which weaponizes the concept.
- Living Dream: Born from the dreams of a young boy who was experimented on for his powerful aspect.
Shade
A boss added to take advantage of the controller rework in Version 0.2.0. He comes from a storybook and claims to be the "true protagonist".
- Interface Screw: His Confuse Orb can reverse opponents' controls.
- One-Winged Angel: Turns into a giant version of himself partway through the second round.
- Unexplained Recovery: Lampshaded by his bio, which isn't sure how he returned after exploding into a million pieces in his debut game.
- Villain of Another Story: Originally the main antagonist of "The Legend of Grembo".
- Wrong Genre Savvy: Shade seems to think he's the protagonist of his own story, when in reality he's anything but.
Alternate Costume Characters
Shin
A mysterious man who showed up at Master Locks’ dojo one day.
- Ambiguously Human: His species is listed as “Human?”.
- Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: This is pretty much his main personality trait. The only person he respects is Master Locks.
- Moveset Clone: Is only playable as an alternate costume for Shoto.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Completely drops his arrogance when facing Black Heart, instead pleading to know what they are.
Robobone- 3000
A robot created to serve as Rattlebone’s sparring partner.
- Moveset Clone: An alternate costume for Rattlebone.
Stryker
Doodle’s sidekick who he dragged along into the game.
- The Drag-Along: Doodle pretty much brought him into the game against his will, and now he just wants to go home.
- Fourth-Wall Observer: Like Doodle, he’s from a cancelled game, and is aware of his status as a video game character. He’s a lot less upset about his game’s cancellation, though.
- Moveset Clone: Doodle’s alternate costume.
Callowtron
A robotic copy of Callowman from 1000 years in the future.
- Killer Robot: It seeks to eliminate all flesh-based life.
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Callowtron’s version of the Callow Rush super has it take out two extra sets of arms before pummeling the opponent.
- Moveset Clone: Of Callowman.
Richard “Ricky Travis” Tragedy
A man in a rat mask who claims to have framed Clyde for murder. Comes from an AI-generated story featuring characters from the game.
- Ambiguously Human: Like Shin and the Masked Oni, his species is listed as “Human?”.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Almost nothing he says seems to make sense, and his dislikes are listed as structure, order, and cohesion.
- Edible Ammunition: Throws cheese in a few of his moves.
- Frame-Up: Claims to have framed Clyde for murder.
- Full-Name Basis: Is only ever referred to as Ricky Travis.
- Moveset Clone: An alternate costume for Red.
- The Spook: Almost everything in his bio is listed as “unknown”.
AI Annie
An alternate version of Annie who went mad and turned herself fully mechanical. Comes from the same AI-generated story as Ricky Travis.
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: A maniacal AI that serves as an opponent in Mission Mode.
- Moveset Clone: Of Annie, although she has some unique properties in Boss Mode.
Roy Urboi
An octopus man who had to resort to petty theft to make ends meet.
- Joke Character: Due to being a Moveset Clone of Guy. His profile also describes his fighting skills as “extremely lacking”.
- Justified Criminal: He’s very poor, so he needs to steal to survive.
- Minion with an F in Evil: Has trouble actually robbing people because he’s too nice.
- Nice Guy: Despite being a robber, Roy’s about as nice as they come.
- Punny Name: His last name sounds like “your boy”.
- Shrinking Violet: He’s incredibly timid and stutters around a lot.
- What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: His aspect causes him to resemble an octopus and lets him shoot ink, which he only does for a pathetically weak projectile attack.
