Ailani Fan

Super High School Level Sci-Fi Horror Author

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri16.png
Everybody enjoys a good scare every once in a while, and the enigmatic author known as Ailani Fan is here to deliver. While her entrance into the world of fiction was nothing incredibly noteworthy, only gaining the chance to have her debut novel published following its submission to a contest, her entrance was met by a small cult following. The Outsider received little to no advertising, but whispers spread among her followers, and through word of mouth and her own presence on social media, her name became more well-known. What followed was ambition and dedication to realizing her next idea for a novel, with Ailani securing a deal with the publishing company to bring her next work, Airlock Requirem, to life. And whether it was the result of careful and clever advertising or the foothold she already held in the genre, the book of short stories she published after a period of silence about further projects was a sleeper hit, and amassed a slightly larger following around the still-secretive author. Increased demand caused her to make appearances at schools and bookstores to promote her next full-length novel, and while her presence is mostly limited to social media and the bookstore visit, it’s undeniable that quiet as she is, she holds a certain level of charisma and charm. It was only natural, then that her latest release, The Minion, would take the horror scene by storm - if not that, then the news The Outsider was being turned into a film by a big-name studio firmly cemented Ailani in the public’s eye as a master of the genre, despite only being eighteen.
  • Aloof Darkhaired Girl: Dark hair, with a disconnected nature.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Has this look to her, complete with Creepy Shadowed Undereyes.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Has the look down, and the character to match. Subverted slightly when it turns out the hair's a wig, though her natural colour is still brown.
  • Elective Mute: Due to having difficulties hearing, she instead uses a whiteboard to communicate.
  • Messy Hair: Part of it is braided, but the trope is still in effect, as the upper parts spike out.
  • Not So Stoic: Upon talking to Piney Pines in Trial 2 and seeing he’s writing out notes for her so she can understand him better, she perks right up and the two start doodling and dancing together. It's as tooth achingly cute as it sounds.
  • Reading Lips: How she understands other students. Because of this, she asks others to look at her when they are speaking. Of course, this doesn't always work out for her, and she is prone to misunderstanding others' words.
  • Shout-Out: Recives the “Hassy” stamina drink from DA5M's Koji Banno and a slashed up uniform jacket from Hibiki Tsukino of DA4O.

Andrew Nyotei

Super High School Level Visual Novelist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri6.png
When people saw works under the online handle of Kokamome many imagined an old hand at the industry of visual novel arts, someone who has faced many trials and practiced many hours at the craft to perfect their style that has become beloved by many. They are then surprised to learn that in fact, that online handle and the work attached to it belongs to a young high school student in Kobe. Andrew Nyotei is the son of a Hyoga native and an Olympic athlete, both now deceased, he now lives and operates out of his aunt's home. The young prodigy has been an artist for 100 and counting visual novel titles, using his skill to blend his own personal style with the overall style of the novel, creating a unique artistic experience for each project he is a part of. His most well-known work is the art he contributed to the now mega-popular otome game, Fool's Love. His work there lead him to acquiring many fans, to the point any project claiming to have Andrew's handle attached to it as either a contributing or head artist, will have fans of Kokamome drawn to it.
  • Blush Sticker: Big, pink, round ones on each cheek.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: A world renowned visual novel artist, and an adorable little guy who looks like a human hug and starts his Trial career with a colorful shonen-anime style speech.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: If his introduction is any indication, seems to believe that anime-style speeches are the key to motivation, or when he puts his three kirugumis together to create the ‘Kiru-mera.’
  • Declaration of Protection: From Chapter 2 update on the relationships, makes this about Hanako.
"If you made that kind of promise... I'm going to do the same for you. I'm not strong, but! Please let me protect you too!"
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Is pretty let down when his super cool introduction speech garners only the barest of reactions or even acknowledgment.
  • Friendless Background: Seems to come from one, and is more used to being bullied and laughed at than anything else.
  • Keet: He’s rather cheery.
  • Romance Game: What the genre of the work he's most recognized for belongs to.
  • Rousing Speech: Attempts one at the start of the first Trial. It didn’t quite have the effect he’d hoped for.
  • Shout-Out: Got a dog collar from Hachirou Shibata of DA5M and incredibly questionable Vegetable Juice from DA3E's Kikuyo Shirabe.
  • The Unwitting Comedian: People tend to laugh at what he says.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Has shades of this, seen in his incredibly shonen-anime like speech in the first trial.

Ayato Akiyama

Super High School Level Pianist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ayato_to_resize.png
Son and heir of the CEO who runs the Akiyama Conglomerate; a company that specializes in creating and distributing weaponry, you'd think his abilities would lie in business or perhaps weapon manufacturing, but instead his interests were found in music. Playing the piano since he was only 4 years old, Ayato Akiyama is considered a piano prodigy among the music world as he won many awards and competitions since he was only six years old. His playing style is described as free-spirited and full of passion; a performance that will definitely stick to you for the rest of your life.

Aside from the more formal recognition, Ayato has also been recognized by his stage name, "Shinigami-kun", as the keyboardist of the recently popular band ARC/\NA. Known for their masks, Major Tarot themed stage names, and unique sound; the six-person band quickly climbed the charts and are one of the top 5 hottest bands of the year with their hit single, Train Station Melancholy. Despite all of this, nothing is known about Ayato Akiyama personally and is considered a mystery to others.

  • Addiction Displacement: Reveals to have had a habit of smoking and uses candy, mostly lollipops, to curb his cravings.
  • Alliterative Name: Ayato Akiyama.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Has noticeably darker skin but his ethnicity has not been stated.
  • Character Tics: He holds the wrist where a red scarf is tied when he's nervous, and is constantly having his hands in his pockets.
  • Child Prodigy: Acquired achievements from his piano playing at the tender age of six.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Has very noticeable ones under his eyes and only seem to be getting worse as the story progresses.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: Sort of. He plays the piano, but his style is more free-spirited than what is expected, and his appearance looks more punkish than anything.
  • Gentle Giant: One of the taller students in the class and is pretty easy-going. He also doesn't seem to bear any ill-will to anyone that tried accusing him as the Trial 1 culprit.
  • Idiot Hair: Has a small, slightly curved one, leaning to the left.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His hair reaches down to his waist, but it's mostly unseen due to his jacket. In Chapter 5 he finally ditches the jacket and let's his hair down. His new appearance did have someone comment on how he looked, "pretty for a guy".
  • Oral Fixation: Almost always seen with a lollipop in his mouth.
  • Perpetual Smiler: His sprite (and most art of him) has him always smiling, for whatever reason. Including when he’s being nearly indited of murder, leading to the possibility of Stepford Smiler.
  • The Scapegoat: Nearly becomes one in Trial 1, all over the style and fit of an entirely unrelated jacket.
  • Shout-Out: Got a neon-pink beanie from Wataru Mishina of DA2B.
  • Stage Names: "Shinigami-kun", as the keyboardist of the band, ARC/\NA.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Apparently if he had tied his hair in a high-ponytail, he'd end up looking like his younger sister (except maybe prettier).
  • Tarot Motifs: The motif to his band, ARC/\NA. His friends/band mates all have stage names relating to the Major Arcana and his is (ominously enough), "Death".
  • Wing Ding Eyes: His updated sprites has "X" shapes in his eyes to replace his pupils.

Charmayne Ng

Super High School Level Violinist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri14.png
A violinist at a high enough level to be scouted by Hope’s Peak Academy is sure to be talented, but Charmayne’s talents are more special than simple skill. Though blind, her synaesthesia allows her to see and taste sounds, giving her an irreplicable, divine style of playing completely unique to her. Nicknamed the Angel Virtuoso, this darling from Singapore has the music world on the edge of their seats waiting for her next performance.
  • Accomplice by Inaction: Kept quiet and in fact even vouched an alibi for Hana, the first case’s murderer, and was dismayed when Hana confessed.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: An impression many get with her. A beautiful girl with a lovely smile and a kind demeanor, who creates beautiful music... no wonder she’s given the nickname of ‘the angel.’
  • Blind Musician: Blind, and a violin virtuoso.
  • Death Glare: Gives one to Monobear and the class as a whole, and all while being blind, after Hana is accused.
  • Declaration of Protection: Gives one to Hana.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: One potential interpretation of how quickly she bonded to and potentially fell for Hana.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: Fits this much better than Ayato does, being a kind and waifish young lady who plays violin.
  • Emotionless Girl: Insinuated earlier in some narration, but pretty much confirmed at the end of the second trial when she was calling Veronica out on her own behavior.
"[...] Having no emotions doesn’t make you smarter than everyone else. That is something I also learned recently."
  • Fool for Love: Another possible interpretation for her actions in Trial 1, defending Hana despite her guilt. This one has been assumed by a couple of her peers, and needless to say there’s quite a lot of distrust directed at her now.
  • Go Through Me: Says this to Monobear when Hana’s execution becomes imminent. Does not get her wish.
  • The Lost Lenore: Hana is this to her, and the reaction to Hana’s actions continue to have ripple effects across the cast.
  • Shout-Out: Receives a LEGO Ninjago Fire backpack of DA4's Rover and a Wonderbra from DA2W's Mitsuko Iwasaki.
  • Staring Down Cthulhu: To Monobear, while blind, while trying to stop him from executing Hana. Impressive.
  • Tastes Like Purple: Has the real-life version of this, synesthesia. Her relationship page even states what shape, color and flavor each person’s name is to her.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Says about as much about those who voted for Hana during Trial 1, despite Hana asking people to vote for her, as she was the killer.
  • Tranquil Fury: Any time she gets mad is this. Props to Trial 1 for excellent illustration of this, as Hana’s guilt becomes more obvious.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Hana. To the point of being willing to lie to cover up her murdering someone else and potentially putting someone else on the chopping block.

CMYK

SHSL Rhythm Gamer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kkakakakakakk.jpg

From Pump It Up to ITG, Beatmania IIX to Sound Voltex, Taiko: Drum Master to OSU!, there likely isn’t a rhythm game CMYK hasn’t played - and of those he has played, there are even fewer he hasn’t ranked into the top ten. CMYK has been dancing, drumming, and tapping keys in time to the beat since childhood, cementing his spot into the ever-growing rhythm game community worldwide. Whether it’s in a local arcade, a nationally-ranked competition, or the basement of his home, CMYK can typically be found glued to a screen, keeping time to the melody of a song. His skills aren’t the only thing keeping him in the limelight, though; CMYK wears a CRT monitor over his head while competing or playing games in public, entirely masking his face. Thus far, he’s been able to keep his real name and identity well under wraps, and goes only by his forum alias, 'CMYK', whenever his interactions relate to his talents.

Died in Chapter 5 when they failed to escape the collapsing Praetis.

  • Fragile Speedster: Their first skill is their incredible speed and reflex, to hit all those 'perfect' notes.
  • Non-Human Head: Wears a TV head at all times while competing or in public.
  • Rhythm Game: Their specialty is playing these.
  • Secret Identity: Keeps his secret via a TV head they wear while in public.

Cody Swanson

Super High School Level B-Boy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri15.png
Former leader of the hottest crew in the circuit TOXiC RAiN, Cody Swanson was a plucky young man from the United States that has left a mark on the world of street dancing. Working his way up through the circuit in America his unique combination of style and power has garnered him invitations to such prestigious events such as Floor Wars, Battle of the Year, and the Red Bull Bc One with his crew. Their exceptional performances swept the competition for three years in a row made him a prominent name in the break dancing community. After a sudden change in location to Japan, Cody disappeared from the competition scene for about a year and a half. His focus went from crew competitions to soloing. Taking to the streets of Akiba with a camcorder, he took to performing for people on the street and uploading video. It wasn’t long before he made his mark on the internet, bringing him back into the scene. Making a come back he was invited by many international competitions to compete as he once did, at first he refused but slowly he came back starting his second showing. His latest conquest was the world B-Boy classic, a competition where a partner is randomly assigned to him not an hour before the competition began. Hope's Peak invited him to the school shortly after he dominated the competition.

EBULLIENCE

Super High School Level Guardian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/small_8.png
What is HAPPENING you BULLY BOYS — it’s EBULLIENCE here, straight from the BULL PEN, coming at you HORNS UP with some more TANKING NEWS this side of the DRAGON’S REAR—
Erm, wait, is the mic even on? Oh, for the love of—!
Well, truly, you don’t have to hear this girl’s charming voice to know that she’s the best of her kind. And woah, does she know how to fend off some raid bosses or what? When it comes to tanking (on World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and Final Fantasy XIV at least — she can’t diversify that much), you really can’t find any better — and especially any better that dedicates so much time to raiding tips, positioning tricks, and ranking the current tanks!

For the past six years EBULLIENCE has been making one of the oddest names for herself in the world of tanking — one laced with mystery, fun, and a certain kind of bullheadedness. Though she has permeated an online presence for a while, not once has our bully girl uploaded a single picture of herself — or given any clue to who she is. While she may tank some of the highest content in games, her guilds — while prestigious — are not consistent; the only constant is that she always keeps BYE✮BYE — her designated support — close.

But hey — that kind of mystery is part of the fun, right? Whoever she is, it’s clear that EBULLIENCE truly is a creature unlike any other.
  • Acronym and Abbreviation Overload: Has a tendency to pepper her speech and text with needless abbreviations from her MMOs. While some of these make sense (BRB, G2G, etc), others (such as repeatedly spamming people with "r") are less obvious.
  • Animal Motifs: Bulls — to an almost absurd degree. It’s in her stage name and she likes to make bull-related puns.
  • Animal Stereotypes: The bull—a creature of incredible power, stamina, drive and stubborness; if a bull decides it’s charging somewhere, it will get there.
  • Bash Brothers: Forms this with Tomoka.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Gives this impression off, with her spicy attitude and how good she is at MMOs and is apparently quite strong in real life.
  • Challenge Seeker: The hum drum and every day are not enough for this bull.
  • Cute Bruiser: She’s very attractive, almost adorable, and she’ll take you down.
  • A Father to His Men: Gender flipped version. If the class are her ‘team’ she certainly counts as this: among other things, she sends silk flowers and chocolates to her classmates at the end of trials.
  • Fearless Fool: She doesn’t fear meeting anyone one-on-one, even hanging out with the openly homicidal Sawako.
  • Fun Personified: She’s rather loud and energetic.
  • Gamer Chick: when ur gaming with a game girl ur gaming with the best; in other words, she’s great at MMO-type games.
  • Heroic BSoD: Undergoes a mild one at the end of Trial 2, when people are fighting and the weight of sending Madoka to her death weigh in on her. She’s good enough friends with most by now that multiple people offer her their help.
  • I Should Have Been Better: As head of the charge, she feels a lot of guilt following each trial—just because a murderer is caught does not mean a victory has been accomplished.
  • The Leader: Unofficially, but she is the one who is able to corral, organize and motivate this ragtag group of misfits better than anyone via her blend of energy and compassion. She takes initiative in trials, and is always a key player in finding who the culprit is.
  • Mama Bear: Plays a guardian druid (aka: a bear) in World of Warcraft, and is extremely protective over her healer, BYE✮BYE.
  • Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game: Where her expertise lies: she tanks like no one’s business.
  • Plucky Girl: She just doesn’t know to give up.
  • Super-Reflexes: A good bulk of the reason as to why she's such a capable tank is that she’s got these. She doesn't even know what wiping a group — or letting a non-DPS die — could possibly entail.

Hana Naomi

Super High School Level Heiress (SHSL Competitive Vaper)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hana_to_resize.png
Hana Naomi was born to wealth some can only ever dream of. Her Father, Haruto Naomi, was a wealthy businessman working for Japan's top tobacco manufacturer—Japan Tobac Co. Her Mother, Sabrina Sylvia, was a heiress in her own right, daughter to CEO of a Brazilian tobacco manufacturer that the company had their eye on. On a business trip to Brazil, Haruto was able to acquire the company for JTC, and the hand of the lovely Sabrina Sylvia, jumpstarting the success of a new international branch of the company, and amassing a great deal of fame and fortune because of it, eventually leading to his appointment to head of the branch.

Little is known about their daughter or how she spends her time, but her Mother speaks highly of her during her highly publicized humanitarian activism efforts, and highly approves of her decision to attend Hope's Peak Academy. Her Father, as always, was too busy to make any sort of comment at all.

She is the culprit of Chapter 1 and is executed for the murder of Touya.

  • Base-Breaking Character: In-universe. The aftershocks from the divisions that occurred after she was outed as murderer and executed can still be felt throughout the various social circles.
  • Break Them by Talking: What happened to Hana during Trial 1: After all the talking and panicking and back and forth about who the murderer was, Hana finally couldn’t take it anymore and confessed.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She's half-Japanese, half-Brazilian.
  • Buy Them Off: A weak attempt at this was made during Trial 1, to have people vote for the already-dead Touya so as to not condemn someone else to death. It didn’t work, and it turned out she was the murderer.
  • Character Signature Song: Mitski: A Burning Hill.
  • Closet Geek: Her room is filled with Disney merch, cute toys, and a 50$ Steven Universe Garnet blanket she imported from America.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Dropped into a box of a room with a timed bomb she attempts to dismantle, has to try unknotting the wires, and when she thinks she succeeded it lets off cigarette smoke, choking her to death.
  • Death by Irony: Dies via cigarette smoke, which she can’t stand.
  • Dropped Glasses: Does this in her execution, losing her precious time as she searches under the table for them. Not that it actually matters in the end.
  • Dropping the Bombshell: Invoked when Hana slams in a vote for herself and confesses to the murder of Touya.
  • Face Death with Dignity: She accepts her fate quite easily.
  • Final Speech: Makes one to everyone, individual thanks to each and every person, before thanking them all for being her friend and making them 'honorary pixies'.
  • Friendless Background: Outright stated to have one, and one of the things she does not regret about the Murder Game is making the friends she did, and finally getting to have a sleepover and a best friend.
  • Get It Over With: Said word for word to Monobear about her execution.
  • Gilded Cage: Lived in one as she grew up, an extremely wealthy family with parents too busy to care about her emotional needs.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: She finally gets to show it in the end, before her execution. Complete with everyone being made into 'honorary pixies' whom she 'gives her pixie magic'.
  • I Die Free: Free from fear, free from emotional repression, free from her parents and expectations. It’s one of the reasons she feels she can be at peace when she dies.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan: Is already a big fan of Aliani’s books before she even gets to the school. Needless to say, being in the same class as her was a thrill.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Said to her classmates before her death.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Charmayne, and whom the self-sacrifice of continues to haunt the class.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Says that she’s this word for word, before her execution.
  • One Last Smoke: Two horribly ironic versions of this: The first is her 'one last vape' before she attempts to murder Touya for the first time. The second is literally cigarette smoke that rushes out of her execution bomb and chokes her to death.
  • Rich Bitch: The first impression she gives to most, belonging to a wealthy family and acting rather cold.
  • Self-Sacrifice Scheme: She and Touya talked it through and worked it out to this, she would kill him and then she would escape. Whether she would have carried through had her conscience not caught up to her last moment is still in question though.
  • Sir Swearsalot: Uses swears more liberally than she uses commas. Even if there’s no anger in her, it comes out as this.
  • Smoking Is Not Cool: Her response to even the possibility of smoking is to go off on the offender and speak to why not only is smoking bad for you, but vaping is much better. Cue ironic death via cigarette smoke.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Petite but a powerhouse of practical mechanical knowledge.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She acts quite cold at first, but she has a good heart.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: She had permission, and even confessed with almost no hesitation.
  • Tears of Remorse: Sheds these by the bucketful, post confession.

Hanako Kamikawa

Super High School Level Guerrilla Gardener

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hanako_to_resize.png
Full gardens have been appearing overnight. Once dull hues of slate and ash have been renovated with vibrant petals of saffron, vermilion, cerulean and every shade in between. Poverty stricken neighborhoods and food deserts are finding vegetables planted in nearest vacant lot, complete with instructions, gardening tools, and fertilizer. The words GROW, LISTEN, THINK had been cultivating onto walls as moss graffiti. Every nook and concrete cranny has been stuffed with greenery. Why? Environmental protest. Somebody has to fight for Mother Nature. Known as the Seeds of Revolution, these anarchistic activists of various creeds target crowded cities and impoverished small towns alike, working throughout the night then dissipating at dawn, protesting with waves of illegal botanical beauty. Neither fans (nor authorities) have been able to catch them, and yet Hope's Peak discovered their founder and leader, sixteen year old Hanako Kamikawa, and bestowed him the title, Super High School Level Guerrilla Gardener.

Found to be the culprit of Chapter Three for the murder of Charmayne, and is executed by being ground up into plant mulch.

  • Accidental Murder: He kills Charmayne on accident allegedly, having switched a cup of poisoned tea meant for himself.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Sent through a grinder and turned into mulch.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Born to a sexworker mother, forced to hide in her closet while she worked, kicked out of their apartment and onto the street while being separated from his mother with no idea if she’s alive... It’s a hard knock life for this guy.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: This guy yells at almost everything. He’ll do it, he’ll yell.
  • Heroic Bastard: Born between his stripper mother and one of her clients, and generally an alright, though hot-headed, guy.
  • Hot-Blooded: He’s quite boisterous.
  • Meet My Good Friends Lefty and Righty: Shouts out “CATCH THESE PATENTED KAMIKAWA FISTS!!” at one point.
  • Missing Mom: Literal. He has no idea where his mom is, or if she’s still alive even.
  • Mistaken for Murderer: When he decides to spend the night at Piney’s room on the night before the 2nd murder, Piney is terrified and comes to the conclusion that Hanako is trying to make them the next victim and phones Veronica over to provide backup. As it turns out, Hanako figured Piney was one of the easiest targets, and wanted to stay with them to ensure their safety.
  • Nature Lover: It’s a big part of his title: he is very passionate about the environment.
  • No Social Skills: Not enough to stop him from getting friends in people who can overlook it, but Hanako doesn’t communicate his intentions very clearly, or else communicates far too clearly.
  • Not Helping Your Case: In Trial 1, when the possibility that he could be the murderer is brought up, he essentially just yells and swears he didn't do it in an aggressive way. Needless to say, people weren’t convinced.
  • Single Mom Stripper: Prostitute, actually. His mother provided for him in the only way she could.
  • Son of a Whore: His mother was a prostitute.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Intended the poison for himself, and gives up in trial gracefully once he is caught. Becomes very adamant on Andrew not having anything to do with the murder once he counter-confessed, as he did not wish for someone else to take his fall.
  • They're Called "Personal Issues" for a Reason: Gets into a Backstory Reveal verbal throwdown with Haruna where he reveals his backstory as a whore’s son living in the wrong side of town. Both were called out using this, with various different versions of ‘no one asked for your backstory’ spoken.
  • We Help the Helpless: As gruff as he is, this seems to be his true attitude. He even gets violent at the very idea that people could be picking on people that weren’t their own size.

Haruna Sasaki

Super High School Level Meteorologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruna_to_resize.png
The not so typical spoiled rich kid, as some would call Haruna Sasaki, and the path towards her dreams and goals she walks upon. Born in Fukuoka, and raised by two respected scientists, she always had an connection to weather. Her dreams began at a rough start, but slowly progressed to something more as she earned winning medals at science fairs, media acknowledgement, and awarding book nominations. With not only her book Earth's Mother Nature successfully selling in three different countries, but also outstanding knowledge of climate and atmospheric phenomena, she became a well-respected and known meteorologists. Her continuous growing achievements eventually had Hope's Peak Academy take note of her talent and abilities, giving her the title of Super High School Level Meteorologist.
  • Acting Your Intellectual Age: She’s a lot smarter than her age would imply, being able to read at a high school level since the age of 10.
  • Agree to Disagree: States this several times during and post Trial 1. In Trial 2 however...
  • Berserk Button: Don’t call her by her first name unless she’s given you permission. Don't call her a spoiled princess. And do not call her short.
  • Black-and-White Morality: After the heartache of losing Hana in Trial 1, she seems to have taken this approach. It either Is or Is Not—and anyone saying otherwise is an idiot she has no time for, sans the time it takes to straighten them out.
  • Break the Haughty: An interesting case where she becomes Haughty because of the break.
  • Broken Bird: Finding out her new friend Hana was a murderer and losing her to execution has left Haruna’s already fragile trust in tatters.
  • Brutal Honesty: Though what is 'truth' and just 'truthfully her belief' depends, either one she will state unflinchingly, and the amount she’ll go out of her way to make it polite depends.
  • Child Prodigy: Has been winning awards since she was a child, and has been able to read at a high school level since she was 10. This left her with a distance between herself and her peers she’s bitterly regarded ever since.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Seeing her new friend executed for a murder she actually committed was this for Haruna.
  • First-Name Basis: With Hana and Kanon, as a sign of their friendships.
  • Gilded Cage: Grew up in one, due to being rich and smarter than she should have been and having neglectful parents. She resented it, and the distance it made between herself and her peers and parents.
  • Hypocrite: Has been accused of this by her classmates. A notable example is Veronica in Trial 2, calling her on her viciousness towards Madoka when her motive was very close to the motive of previous murderer Hana, whom Haruna still regards with total fondness.
  • Ice Queen: How she tends to act, especially post-Trial 1.
  • Insufferable Genius: Been accused of being this by peers in the past. How 'insufferable' she actually is depends on who you ask.
  • In the End, You Are on Your Own: Her belief is that ultimately, the only one you can trust is yourself.
  • Not So Stoic: After Hana is outed as the murderer, Haruna breaks down and starts to sob.
  • Ojou: A rich and classy young lady, for the most part.
  • Older Than They Look: Looks 12, and is in high school.
  • Only Friend: In her past, only a girl named Kotone was Haruna’s friend.
  • The Only One I Trust: Despite the group of acquaintances she is making, Kotone is still the only person she trusts and says as much during her backstory speech in Trial 2.
  • Parental Neglect: Suffered this during her childhood, as she told the class in Trial 2, and only saw her parents during her birthdays.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has pale skin and black hair.
  • Rich Bitch: The impression people often get of her pre-murder game, due her being wealthy and somewhat insufferable. How accurate this statement is depends on who in the class you ask.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: She’s short and incredibly smart, especially when it comes to weather-related topics. Point out her height at your own peril however.
  • Skewed Priorities: In Trial 2, she spends the end of the trial defending her own caustic point of view over paying any attention to the soon-to-be-executed or her last words.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In the group chat, she promises she can co-operate even with people she is arguing with. Then comes Trial 2...
  • They're Called "Personal Issues" for a Reason: She and Hanako get into a Backstory Reveal contest at the end of Trial 2, revealing her lonely childhood and Only Friend. They’re both called on this by multiple people, most memorably by Tadashi:
"Madoka Tojo is about to die, and you’re all out here playing shit parent bingo..?"
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Her reaction to Hana’s 'betrayal' of her trust in Trial 1, when she’s revealed as the murderer.
  • Troubled, but Cute: She’s quite cute to look at, but she has a truckload of personal issues, especially relating to trust.

Kakuei Meguro

Super High School Level Orthodontist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri4.png
Considered a prodigy by the JDA (Japan Dental Association), it’s no surprise that Japan’s youngest practicing orthodontist has received international recognition. Kakuei accredits his aptitude for learning and thirst for knowledge to his grandfather, and co-practioner, Kisai Meguro. Together they work at "Meguro & Meguro" where in recent history their business seems particularly lucrative thanks to his own notoriety. No time for clubs or extracurricular activities for Kakuei, it’s straight to the office. His admission to Hope’s Peak Academy was one that he was sure solidified his future success in the field.

Died in Chapter 5 when he failed to escape the collapsing Praetis.

  • Depraved Dentist: Considering he is the top dentist of his age, this is likely subverted. And he generally seems alright.
  • Face of a Thug: That is not quite the face one expects to have attached to ‘dentist’, with all the piercings and such.

Kanon Kurosawa

Super High School Level Weapons Engineer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kanon_to_resize.png
Daughter of a former Japanese politician and a talented Russian inventor, everyone knew Kanon Kurosawa would take after her parents. What nobody would expect was for her to be utterly fascinated by the military and weapons in general. She began tinkering with firearms when she was seven and constructed her prototype rifle, the Kurosawa 11, when she was eleven. Since then, she’s been recruited by the military to begin producing weapons. Since then, her work has been heavily requested across the globe and she is tied into many top secret projects. These secrets are sought after by many groups. As such, she has received a multitude of threats, and spends most of her time under heavy guard. However, after receiving an invitation to Hope’s Peak, she has chosen to forgo that guard for the protection the school can provide her.
  • Alliterative Name: Kanon Kurosawa.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Has black hair and is rather secretive.
  • Because I'm Good At It: Mainly why she likes working with weapons so much.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She's half Russian.
  • Career Versus Man: Mentioned out of character that she's had several girlfriends before, but they always end up breaking up because her job keeps her so busy.
  • Classical Music Is Boring: States as such in her Relationships page regarding several classical music specialists.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Has a thing for cats, as her Relationship page motif proves.
  • Death Glare: Especially in trials. If you get on this girl’s bad side or on the bad side of her friends, expect to be catching this killer look sooner rather than later.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She mellows out as the game goes on.
  • Disproportionate Reward: In Chapter 1, she showed she'd die for anyone who so much as became her friend.
  • Eccentric Millionaire: She’s the daughter of two influentials and thus rather wealthy… And she also likes to photoshop pictures of herself with cats. Not well but she does it.
  • First-Name Basis: Though she prefers this with everyone, specific mention goes to Haruna, as a sign of their friendship.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She’s great with designing and creating weapons.
  • Gun Nut: She really likes firearms.
  • Hime Cut: Not exactly, but her hair is quite straight and she fits the personality requirements.
  • I Should Have Been Better: Blames herself for what happened with Hana in the first trial, and apologizes to her memory on her relationship blog.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: She has a good heart deep down and she loves cats.
  • Mama Bear: In Trial 1, she fights to protect her friend Hana even when Hana has already confessed guilt. In Trial 2 she similarly tells off everyone involved in the 'overshare debacle' except for her friend Haruna, who started it in the first place. Word of God states that Kanon is biased towards her friends.
  • Meaningful Name: Kanon, pronounced like cannon, makes weapons. Strangely enough, her creator didn't notice this until it was pointed out.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Born into a rich family but works almost non-stop in her talent.
  • Not So Stoic: Goes into a boiling rage at the end of Trial 1, promising swift vengeance on anyone who dares vote for her friend.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Has pale skin and black hair.
  • Shout-Out: Receives Kenshin Takayuki from DA4O's severed head from the Monokuma machine. She did not take it well.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She stands at 6' and is very attractive.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Her feelings towards the end of Trial 1 and the loss of Hana. Oddly, she also feels this towards herself.
  • Undying Loyalty: To anyone she becomes close enough to.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Changes her outfit every chapter.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Kanon is not used to any strong emotion aside from anger. So when she feels something that is closer to sadness after Hana’s execution is announced, she can’t understand it and tries instead to see it through the lens of anger at the class that voted her friend to her death.

Kaoru Miyahara

Super High School Level Omamori Artist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kakak.png
Good luck charms have existed since the idea of good luck could exist, and in the modern day Japan this is no different. Omamori started their humble beginnings in shrines scattered across the cities and towns of the country, but as their uses become more highly refined and the stories and fables of the fortune they spread became household knowledge, their mass-market appeal suddenly became apparent. The charms, now commercial and mass-produced, seemed to lose their famed luck...

However, there is one young artist working to change all of that. A kid with a troubled past turned local hero at the shrine they were adopted into, Kaoru Miyahara's gorgeously detailed, lovingly handmade Omamori are known worldwide for their almost magical fortune. Need money? Need luck on an exam? Need to scare some evil out of your life? Kaoru's charms do it all; exquisitely so. It's hard not to get lost in the meticulous, one-of-a-kind designs that has helped the legendary charms rise to fame, though the rumors that they always work surrounding them certainly help as well.

Died in Chapter 5 when he failed to escape the collapsing Praetis.

  • Face of a Thug: A cute thug, but still, that does not look like the face of an artist.
  • Good Luck Charm: His craft, and what he is SHSL good at.
  • Rags to Riches: Well, 'riches' is subjective but he used to live on the streets before getting adopted into a shrine where he started making beautifully designed Omamori charms.
  • Self-Made Man: From the street to one of Japan’s top Omamori artists.
  • Street Urchin: Used to be this before getting adopted into a shrine.

Kyousuke Hirokawa

Super High School Level Hebocon Competitor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri13.png
In a world where all you do is talk about the great successes, what do you do with those who have struggled along the way and still failed? You give them another chance. In comes Hebocon: a robotic sumo-wrestling competition for the technically ungifted. Kyousuke Hirakawa, a son from a well-off family, joined the contest after seeing one year’s competition, and he has since continued to compete, always advancing far in. It was in his third year of competing where he took home the first place’s glory and title, ultimately springing him into the rosters of Hope’s Peak Academy. He is marveled at for submitting himself to the low standards necessary in Hebocon despite his access to more hi-tech equipment, and his charming yet laughably shoddy designs and failed strategies that miraculously turn around for the better for him have made him a well-liked competitor. With his earnest attempts to win with absolutely no shame and his extremely loud and expressive reactions to any event in the tournament, it’s no wonder he got into the public’s eye!

Was executed at the end of Chapter 4 for the murders of Nozomi and Tomoyuki.

  • Gadgeteer Genius: Works with fighting robots, so it’s a skill of his.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Potentially: despite his general horrible attitude in Trial 1, the next day has him staring blankly at his food and shaky.
  • Jerkass: Isn’t exactly a nice person.
  • Never Learned to Read: In Chapter 4, he admits that he is not skilled at reading and that he only passed his high school entry exam because someone read the whole exam to him.
  • Rich Bitch: The male equal, an heir and at least presenting as a dick.

    Students L-Z

Madoka Tojo

Super High School Level Survivalist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri9_0.png
Seven years ago, a small Japanese airplane crashed into the Russian wilderness, an incident known by people worldwide as the source of one of the greatest survival stories in recent years. Despite impossible odds, there was a single survivor of the crash: a nine-year-old girl. Madoka Tojo received her fifteen minutes of fame abruptly, reporters and television networks bustling for her story; one that enchanted people worldwide for weeks.

That's where memory of her ends for most, but in recent years, Japan's "Lucky Girl" has resurfaced. Popular blog mt-hanachi, which shares frequent survival tips for a wide range of scenarios and exciting stories of the author's adventures traveling the world, had up until very recently been run by an anonymous user. Speculation had run rampant about the author's identity, the only things known about them being that they travelled quite frequently and were a prolific outdoorsman. However, rumors were allayed out of the blue as the blogrunner published a post on her 15th birthday revealing herself to be none other than Madoka Tojo. In the year following the announcement, traffic to Madoka's already-popular blog boomed, her reputation heralding an unprecedented amount of focus on survivalism as well as an acceptance letter to Hope's Peak for the upcoming school term.

She is the culprit of Chapter 2 and is executed for the murder of Sawako.

  • Badass Adorable: Cute and world renowned for surviving the harsh wilds and a plane crash.
  • Bear Trap: Part of how she's executed, leg caught in a bear trap.
  • Break the Cutie: The trial that brought her guilt to light wound up with her breaking down by the end. Fittingly, she shares a name with the trope photo, Madoka.
  • Character Signature Song: ‘Stay In Your Tower And Watch’ from Firewatch.
  • Coming in Hot: The second half of her death—a plane crashes into her, killing her on impact.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Madoka is dropped into the woods she is supposed to be so good at navigating and wanders around before getting caught in a bear trap, a growling towering creature menaces her, and the very plane crash she survived all those years ago comes flying out of the sky and kills her on impact, leaving only her foot still in the bear trap.
  • The Cutie: Quite adorable and friendly.
  • Dead-Hand Shot: Her left leg in the beartrap is all that’s left of her after her execution.
  • Death by Irony: Threefold: firstly that a girl famed for her survival in the elements is immobilized by a bear trap, the other being the plane crash she survived being the plane to crash into her and kill her. Finally, her leg that was injured in the earlier crash is the only leg remaining after her death.
  • Foreshadowing: Sawako, the girl Madoka murdered, had death posts themed after the musical Wicked and the Wicked Witch of the West. Now in Puella Magi Madoka Magica, an anime Madoka shares a name with, what are Magical Girls who go Corrupt called? Witches.
  • Hesitant Sacrifice: She’s shown to be rather shaky before her execution.
    “[...] p-please, please, you can’t kill me, I don’t want to die, please, n-not again, please…”
  • The Pollyanna: No matter what happens, Madoka tries to have a cheerful attitude. Even after being found as killer and sentenced to death, she tried to keep smiling for everyone’s sake.
  • Shout-Out: Got a World Traveler’s Pick Up Lines book from DA4U's Bambi Sindrisson.
  • Sole Survivor: Of a plane crash when she was a child, and her survival and teachings regarding it made her world famous.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Sawako was a horribly cruel person, and Madoka still felt bad for killing her.
  • Tears of Remorse: After being found out for having killed Sawako.
  • The World's Expert (on Getting Killed): Her SHSL is about Surviving, and she does not survive the Mutual Killing Game.
  • Youthful Freckles: Has these on the bridge of her nose.

Miho Kuze

Super High School Level Public Speaker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miho_kuze_shsl_public_speaker_3.png
If you're a company in need of a presentation capable of knocking an audience off their feet, you turn to Miho Kuze. No matter the subject, whether it be motivating salarymen, preaching the importance of environmentalist practices, or pitching a concept to a critical boardroom, she can convey your message flawlessly. In just a few years, Miho has become an important name among all sorts of CEOs and charities, with clientele in almost every business sector. Away from the podium, she's rather intimidating, but it's undeniable that she has quite the way with words.

Died in Chapter 5 when she failed to escape the collapsing Praetis.

  • Drowning My Sorrows: Partakes in this with some of the girls on the night of the first murder, and is thus hung over come trial. Implied to be a larger problem than a one-shot shindig.
  • Rousing Speech: Her job is to give these for a living, no matter what the purpose is.
  • Signature Style: Her gem-tipped fake eyelashes, her 'charm point'.

Mitsuru Okino

Super High School Level Competitive Eater

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri5.png
As a child with an unusually large appetite, Okino had been able to finish off unbelievable portions of food in record time. Normal restaurant portions were never satisfying enough for their black hole of a stomach. Because of this, Okino began targeting eateries with 'impossible' food challenges to placate both their stomach and their wallet. Talk of their ability to finish every challenge that they tried spread, and they were eventually encouraged to enter eating competitions against other individuals. Okino quickly realized how much they thrive in the face of competition, and has since been entering them regularly. While Okino hasn't come out on top every single time, there has yet to be an opponent that they haven't won against at least once. They now run an extremely popular YouTube channel to document their experiences and trials. Their current goal is to challenge and be victorious against top competitive eaters around the world, and has so far been extremely successful.

Died in Chapter 5 when they failed to escape the collapsing Praetis.

  • Big Eater: Their job, as well as a skill of theirs.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Their other skill? Ability to stomach just about anything.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: One can assume they’ve got one, or a black hole for a stomach, considering the amount they can eat.
  • The Pollyanna: A much more toned-down version than other members of this cast, but they’re still quite positive. May be thrown into debate after Madoka’s ‘betrayal’ in Trial 2.
  • Shout-Out: They received paper charms from Wakana Fujiwara, DA3O's Mastermind, a flower crown from DA1's Nozomi Shibusa Omoiyari and a green hair clip for DA3E's Kahori Abe.
  • Youthful Freckles: Clustered on the bridge of their nose.

Nozomi Ukiyo

Super High School Level Maid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nozomi_ukiyo_shsl_maid_0.png
Nozomi is a maid who travels all over Japan and outside the country to serve the top musicians, actors/actresses, politics and anything else of the sort. She is known for her expertise in many areas such as cleaning, cooking, and her ability to make the customer feel at ease when she takes care of their places. She may not be the most "famous" person out there, but Hope's Peak Academy has certainly found that she is a young woman, with an amazing talent just waiting to shine in their school.

The second victim of Chapter 4, killed via an arrow to the neck.

  • Shout-Out: Got a bag of marshmallows referencing DA4U's Kamille Ray.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: As expected of the Maid to End All Maids, she has a calm and helpful personality.

Piney Pines

Super High School Level Mascot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri10.png
In Japan it seems just about everything has a mascot, from parks to events to even prisons. But among the regional mascots, store icons and airline characters a champion rises above: Piney, the Fighting Pine! After Bando Eco Logging company came to being, its mascot Piney has risen to join the ranks of such mascots as Funashi and Domo-kun as a celebrity in the public eye. What truly puts him a rank above the rest is his famous levels of dedication. Workers at Bando insist that they have never seen the man (or woman) behind the mask, and as far as they are concerned the tree themselves doesn't seem to live anywhere specific as opposed to just popping up whenever they are needed. As far as can be observed, there is never a moment when Piney is out of character, and as unusual as the circumstances are the company (and the world) would not have their enigmatic mys-tree any other way. Cheerful, energetic and above all adorable, Piney has caught the eyes and hearts of the country in his freshly scented sway.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Piney has outfits for both genders, has played opposite male and female mascots in skits featuring romance, and when asked their gender they respond "Piney is a tree." Their pronouns swap between 'he' and 'they', but 'she' is never off the table. They even put on big goofy eyelashes and blush for certain looks.
  • Anthropomorphic Objects: A walking, talking tree.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Meant to evoke this image, with his little red boxing gloves and title of the 'fighting pines'. In reality, his personality seems quite a bit more mellow, even nervous.
  • Catchphrase: "Goooooo fighting pines!"
  • Chaste Hero: Assumed. He's a tree! And a company mascot to boot! Not exactly helpful for scoring with the ladies.
  • Crowd Pleaser: As one of his talents as a mascot, he can gauge audience reaction and respond accordingly—this was the main bulk of his job.
  • Famous for Being Famous: Like Funashi before them, they’re famous for being a meme.
  • Fountain of Memes: In-universe. A vine meme where people would perform stunts with Piney plushies helped push him fully into memetic levels of fame.
  • The Gimmick: Is this to his company, Bando Eco Logging, mostly having to do with the fact that no-one’s seen him outside his suit.
  • Goofy Suit: Part of his whole shtick is that he is never seen outside of his pine tree suit. Even in private.
  • The Heart: In trials, it’s this tree that seems to be reminding people to respect the soon-to-be-deceased and to hear them out. They also offer moral support to classmates like Charmayne and assistance to sick peers like Andrew and Miho in their Chapter 3 Relationship updates.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan: Reacts this way to meeting Ryouji Nomiya, their favorite Viner, in person. Luckily for them, Ryouji feels just the same way.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Averted, surprisingly. One wouldn’t expect a Tree to have that much to wear, but a baseball outfit and a maid outfit have both been featured, with a closet full of more clothing to be found to anyone who looks through his room.
  • Love It or Hate It: In-universe. For all the popularity, there's always going to be people who think he's annoying, a corporate tool, or downright creepy.
  • The One Who Wears Shoes: Piney's not like other trees—his magical red shoes allow him to walk around.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Ryouji, the first person he was growing close to, died. His scream apparently broke vocal character.
  • Playing a Tree: Literally. They’re in a pine-tree shaped mascot suit.
  • Pungeon Master: In media, Piney is almost unstoppable with his tree and nature related puns. It seems that the tension of the new situation pulled the puns out of them before the murder game even started.
  • Recognizable by Sound: His shoes puff/squeak softly when he moves. Very distinctive, and gives him no chance to sneak up on anyone.
  • Secret Identity: Who or even what is under the boughs is a mystery that has even incited the start of fanclubs dedicated to figuring out the tree’s real identity. Part of what makes them SHSL is that no one has been able to find out thus far.
  • Shout-Out: Received an incredibly fancy bottle of wine mixed with blood from Shuu Shimura of DA4U.
  • Slave to PR: Has been accused of this by detractors, which was replied to with a resounding 'duh'—he's a company mascot, of course he is one, though he’s genuinely nice.
  • Smarter Than You Look: On TV and as an image Piney is a tad ditzy, like most people expect a mascot to be. But when placed in a high tension situation like the awakening in Praetis, it seems that persona falls away in favor of a nervous and intelligent, if eccentric, tree.
  • Third-Person Person: Piney’s incredibly notable for this, and it depends on the person how long they can stand to listen to it. Moments where they slip up and use 'I' are not unheard of however, though they seem to be important.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Piney has been stated in his 30 facts to be a big fan of melons and melon or green tea flavored treats and sweets. However, people note that Piney’s own food choices when left to their own devices are incredibly simple in comparison and that it’s likely only melons because his company has some kind of contract with melon farmers to say that and promote the product. Interactions with Charmayne in Chapter 2 insinuate that Piney may have a soft spot for udon.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Keeps Ryuoji's necklace after he is killed.

Ryan Roe

Super High School Level Fabricator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri7.png
Ryan Roe, also known as just "Roe", is one out of the many notorious fabricators that have been identified in the world, their fabrications ranging from forging propaganda and slander within the newspapers, as well as ranging to even more serious matters, such as altering information that would be sent to foreign nations, or even locations of wanted criminals. One of their biggest fabrications was leaking false information about the whereabouts of equally notorious serial killer "The Widower", where it interfered with the investigation of the police and ultimately led to the serial killer's escape. What sets them apart from other fabricators is how young they are, as they have been reported to have been fabricating things for almost 4 years now. However, their days were over after being caught red handed by a Hope's Peak Academy alumni out of pure luck. They were handed over to the police, and was held in jail until it was decided on where they'll go. For them, their final destination would have been jail.

...That would have been their fate had Hope's Peak Academy kept their distance from the situation. Known for being a prestigious institution throughout the whole world, Hope's Peak Academy, with the permission from the Japanese government, had officially declared that they would take Ryan in and rehabilitate them into a functional, member of society. A second chance at conforming to society, in other words. The fabricator has officially agreed under oath to the heavy restrictions placed on them, and that they would only use their criminal knowledge to assist in the identification of fabricated objects. According to a few more sources, they have also agreed to attend, and remain at the school under surveillance as well. It is certain to all that they've landed a place in Japan's blacklist after their capture.

  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Identifies as nonbinary, and dislikes being mistaken for a male, such as when Haruna used ‘he’ pronouns with them during Trial 1.
  • Affably Evil: Whether actually evil or not remains up in the air, but whatever they are they are certainly affable.
  • Cool Bike: Got this from the Monomachine right off the bat, and nearly kills Touya with it before the Murder Game even starts. Drives it right into the trial room during Trial 2 as well, when everyone was asked to bring their Monocoin items.
  • Fame Through Infamy: Became well known for a false information leak that allowed a serial killer known as 'The Widower' to get away from authorities.
  • The Gadfly: They’re rather playful and enjoy riling the other students up.
  • Lack of Empathy: Seems to display some of this when interacting with fellow students. They seem to feel bad about the murders though.
  • Lovable Rogue: They work in fabrication and they’re surprisingly friendly.
  • Not Me This Time: Stated almost word for word Trial 1, when blame was passed to them right off the bat by Hana. They were right, and it was in fact the accuser.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Does a non-food version of this while watching the fight that breaks out end of Trial 2, comparing the action to a midday soap opera internally.
  • Reformed Criminal: Supposedly. This was one of the many conditions for entering Hope’s Peak.
  • The Scapegoat: In-universe, mentioned multiple times: as a former criminal, they are very susceptible to blame should a better candidate not be tracked down in time.
  • Shout-Out: Receives a 'Skull Chariot' moterbike from DA3E's Gorou Inoue and a silk magician’s top hat from DA1's Seiichi Ichikawa.
  • Stepford Smiler: They show hints of being this, such as when their smile drops after the first death.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Possibly. They are a criminal and their hair is mostly white.

Ryuoji Nomiya

Super High School Level Viner

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri17.png
Vine user RyoujiNMY (often simply called Ryouji) has been an instantly recognizable Internet presence worldwide for the past three years, and his popularity only continues to grow. With vines in both English and Japanese, Ryouji's antics with friends, family, and his beloved cat Mimi have taken the social media world by storm, even sparking several memes (such as the infamous 'pets versus humans' meme wherein owners attempt to imitate behaviors that come naturally to their pets with varying degrees of success). Ryouji's easygoing personality and sharp intuition for humor have earned him sponsorship deals with brand-name companies, invitations to events in exchange for coverage, and other offers to use his popularity for business purposes. But even when obviously promoting products, Ryouji always manages to put an entertaining spin on it - one of the essential skills that earned him his place at Hope's Peak Academy. Which he, of course, commemorated with a vine.

The first victim, killed for talking back to Monokuma.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Sliced in half, but only just—still intact enough to spend a few seconds gasping for life, even as he begins to accordion in on himself unnaturally.
  • Death by Irony: Indirectly. Guy dies a few days after the Vine app is announced 'dead'.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Guy should have known better than to talk back to Monokuma.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Pretty much, from how he was described to 'accordion' after Monobear was through with him.
  • He Knows Too Much: Presumably killed off for this: after referring to something on his keycard, Peri takes the card and panics, stating he 'shouldn't have seen that'. He is killed immediately afterwards by Monobear.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan: Reacts this way upon seeing Piney Pines for the first time—his little sister is a big fan. Luckily enough for him, Piney’s a big fan of his too.
  • Instant Web Hit: Where his fame comes from, he’s great at making memorable vines.
  • The Pollyanna: The male version. Nothing gets this guy down for longer than a minute.
  • Sacrificial Lion: He’s the first guy killed, to show that Monokuma isn’t screwing around.
  • Those Two Guys: Had the potential to be this or even Heterosexual Life-Partners with Piney Pines from starting chemistry alone. Then Monobear got his claws on him... literally.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Piney keeps Ryuoji's necklace after he is killed.

Sawako Shimoda

Super High School Level Apothecary

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri8_7.png
In Medieval times, Apothecaries were known for making and selling medicines and herbs— and though that is close to what Sawako does, she doesn't exactly fit the picture perfect image of an old time Apothecary. Instead, Sawako has made her name known by selling potions of all sorts. Love, luck, health— you name it, she sells it. Some found joy in calling the young girl a phony and claimed her potions were nothing but fakes, but after hearing back from many satisfied customers, a majority believed in her creations and swore that everything Sawako made was the real deal. But magic isn't real...right?

She is the third victim, pushed down the stairs by Madoka in Chapter 2.

  • Afraid of Doctors: Implied: While most relations on Sawako’s relationship page are some kind of teasing threat, Touya the Nurse has only ‘DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE’. This is likely due to her own lifelong experiences being treated again and again by doctors for her illness.
  • Angel Face, Demon Face: Can go from a fairly pleasant grin to utter murder face on a dime.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: Many people in their relationships pages have mused about how old a practice potion making is, and how it must feel to be the master of such an archaic art. Sawako, it seems, has the time of her life with it.
  • Brutal Honesty: During trials she has very little qualms about cutting through people’s egos or sympathies with harsh truths about the way things stand in the Murder Games.
  • Cute and Psycho: A pretty cute-seeming girl, if it wasn’t for that whole "murder death" thing.
  • Dead Artists Are Better: In her relationships page, notes this to Wataru—saying the world will know his music ‘at the price of his life’.
  • Death Seeker: Actively lauds the grandness of death, and volunteers to be a victim with all gladness. Finally comes to a head in her murder, where her will and diary indicate this was due to a growing despair around her lifelong illness.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Pale skin, light brown hair, constantly talks about how much she wants to kill everyone… Yeah, she fits.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Seems to have a bit of a soft (or at least medium-pliable) soft for Ebull. Also seems to have a big one for her family and hometown friends, according to her will.
  • Evil Gloating: Every last one of her relationships on her relationships page is her telling said relation how she wants to kill them, or otherwise threatening death.
  • Hate Sink: Whether it’s purposeful or not, Sawako acts and talks like she wants the world to hate her. Hate her enough to kill her maybe, as her will entails she wanted to die quickly to avoid long term suffering.
  • Hates Small Talk: One of her earlier interactions, before the murder game, had her grumbling and avoiding conversation. Sawako is much more talkative when murder is on the table as a topic.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Her open will addresses anyone that finds the will and apologizes for her behavior, wishing them well.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: For the first time in game she lights up right after Ryouji’s murder, and openly glories in Touya’s death as well.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While her ways of phrasing are intentionally incendiary, she makes a good point in Trial 1: If Hana had really been trying to save people via the self-sacrifice scheme, she could have saved a lot of time and close calls if she’d just admitted it rather than make people run around up to the post. The fact that she didn’t throws her entire story into a less sympathetic light.
  • Last Request: Has one to whoever finds her will: to give a final letter to her parents.
  • Mask of Sanity: A very thin one, but the difference between ‘grumpy’ and ‘BLOODLUST’ is very obvious. Both very well could be fake though, judging by both Sawako’s internal monologue in Trial 1 and the contents of her Will after her death.
  • No Social Skills: Her introduction to people is usually something morbid or offputting, and that’s just her introductions!
  • No Sympathy: While the class was split during Trial 1 about how much sympathy to feel for Hana, Sawako wasn’t having a second of it, ripping into her with everything she had.
  • Only Friend: Ebull seems to be the only one who can stand being near her. She outright confirms this with her wills, one addressed specifically to Ebull thanking her for being there for her when no one else was.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Surprisingly for a girl this murderhappy, most of her closet consists of cutesy pink clothing, from pink-elements to outright frilly. This is also true of her stuffed animal filled, cutesy room.
  • Shout-Out: Receives a book on flowers from DA5M's Suzume Yamaguchi, and an "Ever-Victorious" Belt from Shogo Kurenai of the same game.
  • Straw Nihilist: She tends to be on the pessimistic side.
"You’re just like the rest of us– despicable human beings. Don’t think a half assed apology and heroic act will change that."
  • Stupidest Thing I've Ever Heard: Says this about the sentimentality and murderer’s supposedly selfless intentions in Trial 1.
  • The Unsmile: Specializes in making these. Her death smile was particularly impressive.

Tadashi Matsuo

Super High School Level Wedding Photographer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri11.png
Some say that a great wedding photographer is a near impossible-to-balance mix of many different kinds. Tadashi Matsuo is becoming a clear argument against that supposed impossibility. Whether it's aesthetic shots outside, close ups of all the finer touches that were so carefully picked by the organisers, or simple but stunning portraits of the happy couple- Tadashi's able to capture it all for you. With the ability to record a day, a ceremony, a bond in a wide range of unique styles, and standing out as a strong choice on a global network of wedding photographers even before he started to be hired by celebrities, it's perhaps no wonder that Matsuo; is now a go-to name in Japan for recording the start of a couple's next special stage in life.
  • Bridezilla: His job is dealing with these. Daily. Oh Joy. No wonder he’s so fed up with everything.
  • Beneath the Mask: While the full under the mask has yet to be revealed, he is actively aware of slips where he’ll become nasty, scathing and completely fed up with the idiots around him.
  • Camera Fiend: His SHSL talent, specializing in wedding photography.
  • Condescending Compassion: His 'nice guy' routine can be seen as this, though how much it is for appearance sake versus how much of a genuine change he’s trying to enact in himself is up in the air.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Especially when his 'face' starts to slip. Used to deliver his particularly bitter two cents when he can’t help himself.
  • No Social Skills: Seems to be working on his, thus coaching and berating himself in his head all through out his relationship page and internal dialogue.
  • No Sympathy: Takes this stance in both trials against the murderers, regardless of how sympathetic they actually are.
  • Shout-Out: Received a broken tablet from DA4O's Hirashi Abe, a cult pamphlet from Zoombi Malware of DA5M and a collection of guro manga from DA3E's Koharu Amashiro.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Almost word for word in Trial 2. Tadashi believes that his classmates are complete morons who don’t listen to him, and has a very hard time not raking them over the coals.
  • Twitchy Eye: When his 'nice guy' mask starts to slip, this tends to happen.

Tomoka Hamazoe

Super High School Level Competitive Karuta Queen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri12.png
Japan’s latest karuta champion is a shameless loudmouth who always speaks her mind. And most unfortunately of all, she’s just a bratty little kid! Tomoka Hamazoe is the rising star among the niche but highly dedicated society of competitive karuta players, taking last winter’s Queen title with skill hailed to be well beyond prodigious. Despite rubbing much of the older crowd the wrong way, few would challenge that her vigorous style and lightning fast hands are a force to be reckoned with.
  • Bash Brothers: Forms this sort of bond with the similarly energetic EBULLIENCE.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Gets friendlier the closer she gets to something or someone she sees as 'cute' and has a hard time staying mad at them.
  • Dumb Blonde: She has her moments, but is certainly not the brightest bulb in the pack. In fact, her reputation as a karuta champion is built off of her use of intuitive play to counter more strategic players.
  • Faceofa Thug: Her face is quite fierce, but she has a good side.
  • Genki Girl: She’s rather loud and spirited.
  • Gyaru Girl: She looks like one at least, having brown skin and bright blonde hair.
  • Hot-Blooded: She's famous for her spirited style of play.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Says what she thinks, which right after someone’s friend gets sent to the chopping block, can be seen as harsh or worse.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: Wears traditional clothes such as this as her everyday style.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Her blog, outside of her interactions, heavily features cute pictures of cats doing stuff.
  • No Sympathy: As far as she’s considered, a murderer is a murderer and a murderer is to be caught, simple as that.
  • Paper Tiger: Despite her feisty reputation, she's only 5'2" and not exactly imposing.
  • Shout-Out: Gets bloody scrubs from Yuuto Ikeda, DA3A's Mastermind.
  • Sweet Tooth: Tomo is regularly seen munching away on snacks she has stashed on her person.

Tomoyuki Phoenix/Ryou Okui

Super High School Level Stage Actor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/avatar_0a5c6039d939_128.png
Tomoyuki Phoenix is a master of the art of stage acting. From Hamlet to Cats, from Rent to Jesus Christ Superstar, Tomoyuki has performed it all. He is well-known for always wearing a mask while performing, regardless of whether the character requires one or not, leading to a mysterious air about the performer. Who is he, really? The world may never know!

The first victim of Chapter 4, where he died of poison.

  • Cool Mask: Just look at his mask. Just look at it. It looks like a bull!
  • Large Ham: Is rather bombastic a lot of the time. Just look at his introduction;
“HELLO, FELLOW CLASSMATES! I AM THE GREAT TOMOYUKI PHOENIX, AND I SHALL BE YOUR LEAD-er? Uhm… hello?”
  • No Indoor Voice: Most of his dialogue is spoken AS IF SOMEONE’S CAPS LOCK IS STUCK!

Touya Nakashima

Super High School Level Nurse Anesthetist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/touya_4.png
After a shortage of anesthesiologists in Japan rendered surgery a dangerous undertaking, a nurse anesthetist program was implemented at Katayanagi Hospital in Matsumoto City in an effort to improve patient care. At the forefront of this program was Touya Nakashima, a young prodigy in the field of medical science. Though little is known about his personal life, and his bedside manner leaves much to be desired, his precision and thoroughness makes him an excellent candidate for administering anesthesia. With knowledge of and training in both general and local anesthesia, Touya is capable of assisting in the treatment of a variety of different wounds and procedures.

He is the second victim, pushed from a gondola by Hana in Chapter 1.

Veronica Shimizu

Super High School Level Mythologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/veronica_to_resize.png
Mankind possesses a truly astounding imagination. If they can't explain themselves something, they will simply come up with an explanation of their own, whether they make sense or not is only of secondary nature. It's about how you bring forth your explanation that will determine whether people will believe you or not - this is how myths are born. The world's beginning, supernatural events, mythical creatures or natural disasters - people have always tried to make sense of things that they can't fully comprehend. Nowadays, many of these myths have been exposed as such, though people still find themselves drawn to the mysteries that the old times offered. You see them used in various medias - movies, books, video games, you name it.

Veronica Shimizu has definitely a hand in the newly arising interest in mythologies, given that every work that she's done the research for has been more popular than other works of the same kind. Especially the famous movie Impundulu; was praised for its accurate presentation of the myths used there. Furthermore, she's also one of the people who found a more complete version of lsquo; The Tale of Genji; at Mitsumine Castle, as well as a collection of old, Japanese folklore that reveals new details about Izanagi. All these successes granted her an invitation to Hope's Peak Academy which she humbly accepted.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She has black hair and is quite stoic.
  • But I Digress: She says this pretty often, word for word.
  • Consummate Professional: In the trial room, it pays to be professional. And in the executions. And in personal life.
  • Cultured Badass: Skilled in mythology and rather good at figuring the cases out.
  • Disapproving Look: Excels in making these, in the incredibly dispassionate flavor.
  • Dispense with the Pleasantries: During Trial 1, though she bothers with them first she does say this pretty much word for word. During Trial 2, she just wordlessly does this and starts with the facts.
  • Emotionless Girl: One of her defining traits, and something that frustrates her classmates endlessly. Though she has admitted to having emotions she also has a very good grip on them, and is dispassionate to a fault on all of her observations.
  • Emotions vs. Stoicism: Very far on the scale leaning Stoic. This leaves a lot to be desired in her bedside manner, and seemingly strips her of the ability to consider the case from a human-heart perspective, leaving her questioning the motive and chalking it up as her classmates being illogical.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Has pale skin and black hair.
  • Shout-Out: Got, of all things, shark themed condoms from Aqua Ooshima of DA3E.
  • The Spock: Rather logical in thinking.
  • The Stoic: Tends not to show emotion that much.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Has a few points where she seems near to experiencing an emotion, especially in trials. When casting her vote for Madoka in Trial 2, she felt a twinge of something like disappointment, or even sadness.

Wataru Noto

Super High School Level Composer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kakakkaka.jpg
Affectionately dubbed by the general public as the Heisei no Chopin or Chopin of the Modern World, Wataru Noto's musical style possesses a unique flavor of fragility and delicate handling of subtle tonal quality; earning the moniker due to these distinctions as well as his constant use of experimental innovation in his more traditionally seminal pieces. His impressive track record boasts of astounding feats for someone of his relatively young age, ranging from composing Japan's leading news channel's anthem when he was just a freshman in junior high to having his compositions sought after by professional musicians competing in local and international concours. Following a recent media buzz surrounding his name and garnering some amount of recognition by the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Wataru was swiftly offered an invitation to Hope's Peak Academy. Known as a reclusive musical artist, Wataru's enshroudment with mystery adds to the allure of his genius to the public eye and his official status as an envied Hope's Peak student only serves to ignite the fire of intrigue about him even further.

Died in Chapter 5 when he failed to escape the collapsing Praetis.

  • Child Prodigy: Was one. He mastered classical composition at the age of 6.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: His specialty, as a composer.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Befitting of his calm, almost completely serene disposition.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name Wataru (航) is written with the kanji that means 'to navigate' while his last name is a play on the English word 'note'. Simply put, he is a navigator of notes.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Has pale skin and black hair.

    Other Characters

Peri

Super High School Level Motivator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri_79.png
A mysterious girl who appeared before the class after they woke up in their new home. While seeming to know quite a bit about what's going on, she is unwilling to share, focusing instead on the students settling into their 'new home.' Since the arrival of Monobear, it seems that Peri has very little power to stop the bear or protect her students.
  • The Alleged Boss: She says that she’s in charge of the students, but then along comes Monobear... And her authority has been superseded.
  • Authority in Name Only: Has been unable to do a single thing since Monobear has arrived, and only really serves to fret and attempt to encourage people.
  • Go-Getter Girl: Her general attitude as the SHSL Motivator, to the annoyance of some. Her lack of effectiveness in more important areas like protecting them only add to the bitterness.
  • The Pollyanna: Positivity is her bread and butter, even when her show is jacked from under her nose and her precious students are endangered.

The Mastermind

The one behind the Mutual Killing Game. After all, that little bear couldn't have come up with this all on his own...right?

  • Walking Spoiler: Discussing their identity will invariably spoil the plot of Parelthon.
