Tournament Fighters
General
- In-Series Nickname: Each fighter is assigned an alias that is used by the tournament staff.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Several fighters are referred to almost exclusively by their nicknames. For more info, see individual character folders.
- Punny Name: Several fighters have puns for names.
A Block
Marek Kysely/Heavyweight
- And I Must Scream: Is rendered mute, immortal, and in constant pain by Felix Ares.
- Arc Villain: Of Sole Survivor.
- Attack Its Weakpoint: Zigzagged. Although Rachel assumes that his helmet protects a weakpoint, Heavyweight's helmet is primarily for hiding his flaming scalp. However, his eyes are less tough than his skin. Unfortunately, his Healing Factor renders that weakness useless.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: His wish to survive curses him with a painful immortal existence.
- Blessed with Suck: His ability to survive renders his wounds unable to heal and the fire around his skull unable to go out, leaving him in constant pain.
- Curse That Cures: His curse, which leaves him in constant torturous pain, is also the only thing keeping him alive.
- Dark Is Evil: Heavyweight wears all black clothing and is a violent psychopath.
- Fireballs: Gains the ability to fire them after rebuilting Helios’s cannons.
- Gentle Giant: Prior to the death of his wife and son.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Reverse engineers and rebuilds Helios's cannons from the scraps leftover from their fight.
- Healing Factor: Thanks to his blessing, he heals fast enough to shrug off being decapitated.
- Hellfire: The fire covering his skull has been burning for months.
- Helmets Are Hardly Heroic
- Instant Knots: At one point in Sole Survivor, his chains wrap around Rachel, allowing him to pull her close and punch her away.
- Made of Iron: Shrugs off explosions, liquid nitrogen, being stabbed with a Laser Blade, decapatation, and more.
- Menacing Stroll: Usually walks slowly towards opponents.
- Molotov Cocktail: His flaming skull is partially the result of having one smashed on his face.
- Off with His Head!: Heavyweight is decapitated during his fight with Solais. In a flashback, he rips Felix Ares's head off using his Super-Strength.
- One-Man Army: Fights off dozens of Coalition soldiers and wins.
- Punny Name: Heavyweight is a play on the weight class and the fact that he wields an oversized ball and chain.
- That Man Is Dead: After the death of his wife and son, the narration switches from calling him Marek Kysely to calling him Heavyweight.
- Unstoppable Rage: After the death of his family, he literally tears Felix apart.
- Wound That Will Not Heal: His injuries inflicted on him by Felix Ares cannot be healed or deteriorate.
Maolius Lupei/Helios
- Non-Fatal Explosions: His cannons, despite the fact that they fire exploding fireballs, never actually manage to kill anyone.
- The Worf Effect: Is beaten to the brink of death to establish Heavyweight as a dangerous fighter.
Victor "Vic" Callaghan/Arctic
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Has grey, frostbitten skin and black fingers.
- Evil Is Deathly Cold: Vic is a thief and assassin who can manipulate liquid nitrogen.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Arctic is a rude, cynical, criminal, but saves Ahmed’s life and is worried when Rachel is heart.
- Personality Powers: A cold blooded, snarky, consummate professional with ice powers.
Magalie Matsumoto/Emerald
- Green Thumb: She can make vines burst out of the ground and her arms.
- Uncertain Doom: She may have been killed in her fight with Arctic.
Gwynn Galo/Aegis
- Butt-Monkey: She gets beaten to a bloody pulp twice in one book.
- Disney Death: She's seemingly killed in his fight with Solais, only to be confirmed to be alive in the next chapter.
Anatolios Haven/Gunslinger
- Badass Bureaucrat: A mid-level bureaucrat who happens to be very good with firearms.
Rachel Botterill/Solais
- Character Development: She becomes braver over the course of the first book.
- Clean Cut: Rachel empowers it with the ability to cut through anything, including steel and Heavyweight’s skin, during her third fight.
- Empowered Badass Normal: She gains powers during her fight with Heavyweight.
- Heroic BSoD: Falls into one after her fight with Heavyweight.
- Goggles Do Something Unusual: Rachel’s goggles, called Odin Eye, have a variety of different settings, including thermal, mana vision, zoom, and night vision.
- Named Weapons: Each of her stolen weapons has a mythological name.
- They Call Him "Sword": She's named after her Cool Sword.
- Took a Level in Badass: She gradually becomes stronger with each fight.
Gallus Silvano/Sage/Lazarus
- Meaningful Rename: Changes his code name from Sage to Lazarus after losing most of his magical powers.
- Obfuscating Disability: After his leg is injured in his fight with Bombshell, he walks with a cane. During his fight with Rachel, he reveals that his cane is unnecessary.
- Punny Name: As he puts it, he is a dead man walking.
Other Fighters
Daragh Ximeno/Swordmaster
Coral Cooney/Widow
- Female Gaze: She spends most of her time fawning over a musclebound fighter who she sits with in the Peanut Gallery.
- I'm a Humanitarian: She threatens to eat Vic.
Invader
- Bizarre Alien Biology: She lacks a mouth or nose.
- The Faceless: She lacks all facial features except eyes.
- No Name Given: She's only referred to as the Invader.
Past Tournaments
Tournament Staff
Faustino "Faust" Nash
- Added Alliterative Appeal: Is a fan of it, ie: introduces Emerald as the wicked woman wielding weaponized weeds.
- Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Brings monstrous characters like Heavyweight to the tournament and isn’t fazed by them.
Arastoo Rompaye/Legion
- Cool Sword: Owns several, including a flaming sword and a blue sword that allows him to control wind.
Other Characters
Felix Ares
- Faux Affably Evil: He acts kind and friendly, but shows off his cruel nature when Marek hides his research.
- Killed Off for Real: He dies at the hands of Heavyweight.
- Molotov Cocktail: He makes one to destroy Kysely’s research and ends up smashing it on Kysely’s skull.
