    Marisol Suarez

Marisol Suarez

Played by: Ana Ortiz
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marisol_suarez.png
"You wanna talk about how unfair life is? That's great, 'cause I know all about that!"

  • Blackmail: Marisol blackmails Rosie into keeping quiet about her real identity by threatening to reveal Rosie's affair with Spence.
  • Broken Bird: She's a sort of a BrokenBird/Determinator hybrid.
  • Clear Their Name: The real reason Marisol takes a job as a maid is so she can figure out who really killed Flora and set up her son Eddie as the scapegoat.
  • Ethnic Menial Labor: Subverted. She's actually an English professor with a specialty in Oscar Wilde and several published books. She's posing as a maid to find out who framed her son.
  • Gossipy Hens: This is Marisol's strategy to gather information on the Powells and who framed her son.
Marisol: Is it awful of me to be gossiping about my employers?
Zoila: Honey, if you're going to sit by us, it's a requirement.
  • Mama Bear: Frame her son for murder? She's going undercover and solve the murder herself.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Secretly Wealthy: Marisol is actually an English professor and thus wealthy enough to hire her own housekeepers and a lawyer for her son.
  • Spicy Latina: Marisol only becomes this when the Yandere ex-wife of her employer threatens to destroy the party he was throwing.
Marisol: Do not screw with me, bitch, or you will live to regret it.
  • True Companions: In the premiere of the second season, Marisol is fully accepted into the group, and they pooled their resources together for a lawyer to handle Rosie's immigration case.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this in spades with Carmen. They're always snarking at each other, but ultimately still help each other out.

    Rosie Falta

Rosie Falta/Westmore

Played by: Dania Ramirez
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosie_westmore.png
"If you try to make your marriage work and it doesn't, then maybe we can talk about the future. But I need to know you tried, okay?"

  • Berserk Button: Making insensitive comments about her situation with her son.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Rosie accidentally feels her employer's erection when he hugs her. When Zoila and Marisol press on for details, she holds up a huge cucumber.
Rosie: Well what could I say? Congratulations?
  • Broken Bird: Rosie's husband died and in order to find work to support her son, she came to America and hopes to bring him here to give him a better life.
  • The Fundamentalist: Zig-zagged with Rosie. While she's deeply religious and frowns upon cheating and lying, she's genuinely a sweet and rather naive person who just wants to do the right thing. (Not that it stops her from gossiping about it with her friends and engaging in an affair with her boss.)
  • Good Parents: To her son and Tucker, because of his mother's neglect.
  • The Illegal: Ends up getting exploited by Peri to get back at her. Things don't quite go according to plan unfortunately for Peri as she doesn't get deported.
  • Meido
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a pretty Spicy Latina with a sexy accent.
  • Naïve Newcomer: In comparison to the other maids, has a fairly naive outlook on life and her friends advise her on many of her problems regarding her employers.
  • Secret-Keeper: Rosie unwillingly becomes one for Peri's cheating, despite clearly disapproving of it. She reluctantly keeps quiet because her friends advised her to in case of Spence's reaction and Spence confiding that he won't let their son grow up in a divorced family.
Rosie: I washed those sheets, but they will never be clean.
    • Rosie and Marisol have become each other's secret keepers now, much to each other's suspicions. By the season finale, Marisol's true identity is out in the open and she is fully accepted by the group as their friend.
  • Servile Snarker: She becomes one when she gets drawn into covering up Peri's cheating:
    Peri: [in shock] Rosie?
Rosie: The coffee...did you want French Roast or Colombian?
  • Sleeping with the Boss: With Spence.
  • Spicy Latina: Rosie is quite emotional because she harbors the most suspicions over Flora's death and because she's been running herself ragged over trying to bring her son over to the U.S. legally from Mexico.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Rosie is the only one of the maids (or neighbors) to have strong religious - Catholic - inclinations.
  • True Companions: After Rosie wakes from her coma from being shot at her wedding, the group quickly fills her in on the latest gossip, including Marisol's newfound Vitriolic Best Buds relationship with Evelyn Powell and Carmen dating a man who's married.
  • Unequal Pairing: Spence has feelings for Rosie, when she discovers after inadvertently feeling his erection when he hugs her after secretly giving her a check to pay her immigration lawyer. Rosie is conflicted and clearly uncomfortable with the matter.

    Carmen Luna

Carmen Luna

Played by: Roselyn Sánchez
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carmen_luna.png
"Ever since I was a kid, I knew I was meant to own nice things. Not clean them."

  • The Beard: For Straight Gay Alejandro. For two years, she has to be married and pretend to be his wife in public in exchange for Alejandro's music connections. She's forbidden to see Sam during that period.
  • Berserk Button: Treating your employees unfairly. Alejandro learned this when he didn't care about Odessa with her cancer, Carmen threw her soup at him and threatened to quit.
  • Broken Bird: Carmen fled from an unhappy marriage to a man who did not support her singing, the one thing that brought her joy.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Carmen didn't like it when Sam was dating a chef.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Ethnic Menial Labor: Carmen is only working as a maid for Alejandro Rubio in the hopes that if she can get her demos to him, she can get her footing in the music industry.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Odessa and Carmen constantly clash, but when Odessa is diagnosed with cancer, Carmen puts aside their rivalry and they become friendlier
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: Carmen doesn't really take Sam's affections for her seriously until he begins dating the new cook next door
  • Meido: Sometimes she'll wear casual clothing while working as well.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Older Than They Look: Carmen is 37 but looks really good for her age.
  • Proud Beauty: Carmen is extremely proud of and confident about her looks, and accepts all compliments with relish.
  • Secret-Keeper: Zoila and her quickly change the subject whenever Flora and the Powells come up.
  • Skinny Dipping: In "Setting the Table", Carmen is quick to take advantage of the fact that Alejandro and Odessa will be out of the house for a while to enjoy its luxuries herself, including going for a swim in his pool in the buff. She's also uncaring about doing so in front of Sam, who is too busy Eating the Eye Candy to properly protest. Naturally, Odessa comes back sooner than expected and Carmen has to hurry and hide inside a piano naked as Sam covers for her.
  • Spicy Latina: She is ambitious and hopes to break into the Latin music industry by getting a job as a maid with a major Latino singer, but has to think quick because her boss is a jerk.
  • Teen Pregnancy: How her daughter Daniela is born.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this in spades with Marisol. They're always snarking at each other, but ultimately still help each other out. She also becomes this with Odessa, who she helps out while Odessa is having cancer treatment to cause their relationship to get closer.

    Zoila Diaz

Zoila Diaz

Played by: Judy Reyes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zoila_diaz.png
"Rich boys never fall in love with the help"

  • Berserk Button: Insulting her cooking or screwing around with her daughter.
  • Broken Bird: Zoila has spent much of her life having to take care of her irresponsible high maintenance employer who falls in love too easily and has been hurt many times and had her own heart broken by her employer's brother.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Especially around Genevieve.
  • Generation Xerox: Zoila disapproves of Valentina's efforts because she herself had been in love with Genevieve's brother Henri. She's trying to keep her daughter from doing the same thing, having known the outcome herself. However, when Henri calls to check in on his sister, Zoila is not above using the same tactics as her daughter.
  • Good Parents: Her mother loves her even though she doesn't approve of her decisions sometimes.
  • Hired Help as Family: Zoila describes herself as the longest relationship in Genevieve's life and isn't afraid to call out her, or her generally terrible partners, by pointing this out.
  • Mama Bear:
Zoila: She won't care if you're her boss, she'll threaten you if she thinks you're screwing around with her daughter.
  • Meido: Sometimes she'll wear casual clothing while working as well.
  • Mock Millionaire: Zoila is one to impress Kyle, who sees her (unknowingly) wearing her new boss's clothes, while she was trying them on.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • My Beloved Smother: Has this problem a lot; she's very protective of Valentina who is pretty naive.
  • Old Retainer: Zoila constantly works for Genevieve and Remi and describes herself as the longest relationship in Genevieve's life. She even makes an effort to raise money for Genevieve when Genevieve loses her money and is at risk of having to let Zoila go.
  • Secret-Keeper: Her and Carmen quickly change the subject whenever Flora and the Powells come up.
  • Servile Snarker:
Genevieve: I'm serious, Zoila! This new therapist is a genius! He could tell that I needed to be on mood stabilizers within 5 minutes of meeting me!
Zoila: It took him that long?
  • Spicy Latina: Zoila is straightforward and stern with her daughter Valentina and is more exasperated with Genevieve's hysterics than anything. She also isn't afraid to talk back to Philippe or tell Genevieve what she really thinks.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: With Pablo. He's balding and old while his wife looks younger and much better than him.

    Valentina Diaz

Valentina Diaz

Played by: Edy Ganem
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valentina_diaz.png
"Why would a boy like Remi love me? I'm nothing."

  • The Baby of the Bunch: She is the youngest of the maids, having just graduated from high school, and she's Zoila's daughter.
  • Betty and Veronica: Valentina finds herself as the Archie in season 2 between Remi, who she broke up with in Africa because he was always busy, and Ethan the pool boy who understands her life better growing up with a similar background to her but doesn't know much about him.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Towards Zoila, but only when the subject of Remi is concerned.
  • Cat Fight: Between her and Remi's girlfriend. The gardeners wanted to watch them.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: When she found out that Remi was dating his ex.
  • Commuting on a Bus: In Season 2, she briefly goes to Africa with Remi.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the third season. Valentina is even left off the promotional images.
  • Femme Fatale: Valentina styles herself as this in hopes that Remi Delatour would notice her. Her mother actively discourages this.
  • Long Bus Trip: Valentina goes to New York with Remi, and never comes back despite her mother's pregnancy or the multiple other issues that maybe would have prompted her to come back.
  • Meido: Sometimes she'll wear casual clothing while working as well.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Naïve Newcomer: She is the youngest of the maids and, as such, she still harbors romantic dreams, especially about Remi and what will happen to her life.
  • Spicy Latina: Valentina attempts to invoke this in order to gain the attention of Remi Delatour, much to her mother's annoyance. However, Valentina is generally the only one of the maids who is more internal and naive.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: How Valentina sees herself and Remi...although Remi still has no idea she loves him, though he finds out before long.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Downplayed. Zoila is very pretty, too, though she gets the Hollywood Homely treatment due to being much more dressed down than her daughter. However, Pablo, Valentina's father, is much less conventionally attractive.
  • Unequal Pairing: Zoila disapproves of the idea of Valentina and Remi, as she tells Valentina that people like Remi "don't fall in love with the help".
    • The reason Zoila is emphatic on this is because she herself had fallen in love with Genevieve's brother Henri when she was younger and he broke her heart.
    • This comes to a head when, though he finally begins to return her feelings for him, Remi hasn't even learned Valentina's last name or that she's an only child when she knows every detail about his life.
  • Unrequited Love: Towards Remi.

    Evelyn Powell

Evelyn Powell

Played by: Rebecca Wisocky
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/evelyn_powell.png
"Love can't seem to unite us. Why not try hatred?"

  • Bad Boss: Evelyn is more concerned with the upkeep of the house rather than the fact that Flora was murdered in her den. She and her husband are also hiding some secrets of their own that involve Flora's murder and would rather sit back and let an innocent take the fall rather than have the police investigate further.
  • Broken Bird: In spades.
  • Cruel Mercy: She stops Adrian from stabbing Nicholas after finding out Nicholas was responsible for Barrett's death because she says that prison is a worse punishment for him.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Evelyn is completely taken with the new bodyguard Tony and is unable to hold a conversation with him without staring.
  • Hidden Depths: The first episode makes it seem like Evelyn Powell is a stone-cold bitch who is more concerned about the mess made than her maid's actual death and perfectly happy to let an innocent boy take the fall for the murder to keep her secrets from being uncovered. In later episodes, it is revealed that she is a deeply unhappy woman years into a life she hates, beginning with her son's death 15 years earlier. Both Evelyn and Adrian agreed his death was Evelyn's fault and eventually came to an agreement: Adrian would not file for divorce (and would not cheat on Evelyn) if he was allowed to explore his own voyeurism by hiring prostitutes to have sex with their friends in their house while he watches. The terms of that agreement were tested, to say the least, when Adrian slept with Flora.
  • The Masochism Tango: The Powells' relationship is deeply dysfunctional.
  • Meido: She wears one to improve her sexual activity with Adrian in season 3.
  • Rich Bitch: She's more concerned that no one will clean her house now that Flora is dead.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense
  • Riches to Rags: She gets cut off financially from Adrian due to their divorce and also has her access blocked from their house. (All is part of his plan to get back together).
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Evelyn is extremely bitchy but this is a result of hiding her deep sadness around her son's death and her Sexless Marriage.
  • Sexless Marriage: Evelyn and Adrian share a bed but don't sleep together for over a decade, which is why Adrian resorts to "his disgusting little hobby".
  • Skewed Priorities: When the police tell Evelyn they have enough evidence and are ready to leave, she breaks down in hysterics.
Evelyn: My maid was murdered! Who's going to clean this up?

    Adrian Powell

Adrian Powell

Played by: Tom Irwin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adrian_powell.png
"I told you, if I was going to stay my needs would have to be met. That was the deal; you agreed."

  • Bedroom Adultery Scene: In a rather hilarious way, though not for him certainly. Evelyn walks in on him with his pants down. He also seems to be into BDSM!
  • Bribe Backfire: Adrian tries to bribe James to stop seeing his wife. James accepts the check, but he gives it to Evelyn so she can finally hire a good divorce lawyer and escape her marriage.
  • Dirty Old Man: He's a creepy Peeping Tom, sets his friends up with prostitutes, and he also flirts with the maids. His friends have no qualms about hooking up with prostitutes in Adrian's home, at his encouragement.
  • Has a Type: Adrian seems to have a thing for his maids — specifically Latina ones. He is, however, still attracted to Evelyn.
  • Kink Is Bad: Adrian is already The Peeping Tom, but he becomes actively interested in relatively hardcore kink in Season 3, and actively pressures Carmen into participating in it.
  • The Masochism Tango: The Powells' relationship is deeply dysfunctional.
  • Moral Myopia: Adrian has repeatedly cheated on Evelyn, at least by the standards of his "disgusting little hobby" (peeping on his clients, and potentially sleeping with his maids). He's furious when Evelyn cheats on him, and is enraged by it.
  • The Oldest Profession: Adrian Powell is a pimp for his oblivious friends and Flora was prostituting for him. Taylor was also one of his prostitutes.
  • The Peeping Tom: As if Adrian Powell isn't creepy enough, he secretly watches Evelyn's ex-boyfriend get it on with a prostitute. He does this with all his prostitutes and tapes their encounters.
  • Sexless Marriage: Evelyn and Adrian share a bed but don't sleep together for over a decade, which is why Adrian resorts to "his disgusting little hobby".
  • Spicy Latina: Judging by his rather creepy mannerisms and his unsettling interest in Marisol, this trope is a fetish for him.
  • Villainous Parental Instinct: Adrian is a slimeball but he and Evelyn are still bonded by the death of their son, Barrett. His first instinct upon finding out Nicholas is the murderer is to stab him.

    Spence Westmore

Spence Westmore

Played by: Grant Show
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spence_westmore.png
"My folks were divorced, and for years I was roped in a nasty game of tug-of-war."

  • Good Parents: He didn't want to divorce Peri cause he didn't want to lose custody over their baby. He's also a stay home dad and spends time with him.
  • Henpecked Husband: Peri is extremely controlling and critical, and walks all over the nice, if conflict-averse, Spence.
  • Hide Your Children: After his and Peri's divorce, their son is barely seen.
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Unequal Pairing: Spence has feelings for Rosie, when she discovers after inadvertently feeling his erection when he hugs her after secretly giving her a check to pay her immigration lawyer. Rosie is conflicted and clearly uncomfortable with the matter.

    Remi Delatour

Remi Delatour

Played by: Drew Van Acker
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/remi_delatour.png

    Genevieve Delatour

Genevieve Delatour

Played by: Susan Lucci
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/genevieve_delatour.png
"I can't be selfish, the U.S. economy needs me."

  • Bad Boss: She's is more of a Benevolent Boss, she's just extremely high-maintenance.
  • Beauty Breeds Laziness: Genevieve is clearly used to coasting on her looks. She's a Book Dumb Brainless Beauty and takes pride in how little she can do around the house (which makes her dependent on her maid, Zoila). Though she was clearly hardworking at one time as she came from nothing, upon learning that she and Remi are broke thanks to a corrupt accountant, Genevieve's first instinct is to get back in contact with Remi's father and attempt to remarry rich.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Genevieve never looks any different even while her liver is failing and she is presumably close to death.
  • Drama Queen: Her Establishing Character Moment is her having a delirious fit under her bed after she swallows a bunch of pills because her affair with the pool boy ended. Judging by Zoila and Remi's exasperated reactions, it's not the first time.
  • Hidden Depths: She is very embarrassed about her humble past that she changes her and her brother's name, Eunice Mudge and Henry to Genevieve and Henri. She also has a rocky relationship with her mother.
  • Hired Help as Family: Genevieve seems closer to Zoila than any members of her family.
  • Home Porn Movie: Ends up making one of these with Louie Becker.
  • My Beloved Smother: Her mother is this to her.
  • Older Than They Look: Genevieve claims that the pool boy left her because he thought she looked 40. Zoila points out that she still looks great at almost 60, which only sends Genevieve further into hysterics.
  • Plastic Bitch: Downplayed. Genevieve is a sweet person, but also completely oblivious and out of touch, and is obsessed with plastic surgery.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense
  • Shipper on Deck: Genevieve for Valentina and Remi, after she finds Valentina in tears about being unable to confess her love to Remi. It's possible that Genevieve sees a kindred romantic spirit in Valentina and decides to help, behind Zoila's back as Zoila disapproves of Valentina's efforts.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Genevieve is older than most examples, but she's an extremely wealthy, naive woman who often depends on her maid Zoila for a dose of reality.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: She's the "wacky parent" to Remi's "serious child".

    Jesse Morgan

Jesse Morgan

Played by: Nathan Owens
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jesse_morgan.png
"Me and my two best friends, Max and Ray. We were stationed in Afghanistan for three tours. I'm the only one that came back."

Recurring

Introduced in Season 1

    Peri Westmore

Peri Westmore

Played by: Mariana Klaveno
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peri_westmore.png
"You've seen me in action. I'm a nightmare, right?"

  • Baby Trap: Peri lies to Spence that she's pregnant in order to keep him and keep him away from Rosie.
  • Back for the Dead: She comes back at the end of Season 3, only to be murdered at the end of the Season 4 premiere.
  • Bad Boss: Peri forbids Rosie from taking a day to see an immigration lawyer, and then doesn't understand why Rosie is so heartbroken at the legal hurdles separating her from her son.
  • Commuting on a Bus: She leaves her house after divorcing Spence, but is barely seen again after that.
  • Evil Redhead: In Season 1 (when she had red hair), she didn't care about Spence's feelings if he found out that she cheated on him. She's hardly better
  • Hypocrite: Peri has no qualms about cheating on her husband and happily does so, but when she suspects Spence may be doing the same thing, she gets in a huff and asks Rosie to snoop for her.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • Parental Neglect: Peri ignores her infant son and leaves his care to Rosie unless it's for PR purposes.
  • Put on a Bus: After Commuting on a Bus, she gets Put on a Bus when Spence marries Rosie.
  • Rich Bitch: Peri is one of very few women who appears to have her own
  • Skewed Priorities: She's more concerned about her acting career and looking good on camera to take care of her son and leaves most of the childcare to Rosie. What's more is that she admits to not caring about her husband and willingly cheats on him for no other reason given than in her eyes he's a bad actor.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Mariana Klaveno is roughly about 5' 10".
  • Trophy Violence: Peri is killed via a stab wound to the throat with her People's Choice Award.

    Taylor Stappord

Taylor Stappord

Played by: Brianna Brown
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taylor_stappord.png
"I was 20 when I came to LA, and I just knew I was gonna be in the movies. The closest I got was a diner across the street from Paramount."

  • The Bus Came Back: She and Michael become regular characters in Season 3 again, after previously being regulars in Season 1.
  • But Now I Must Go: Taylor flees after the cartel finds her and Katy, and she's not seen again.
  • Broken Bird: To some degree.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Taylor becomes immediately much friendlier with Marisol when Marisol kicks Olivia out of her house.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Taylor is only superficially offhand with Marisol when she starts working at their house. She quickly becomes one of Marisol's biggest allies and an extremely nice person despite her wealth, with long blonde hair.
  • Happily Married: Despite having met through escorting, Taylor and Michael are genuinely in love.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: From what we see of her, Taylor is an extremely kind and nice woman, and she's also a former prostitute (that's how she met Michael).
  • Mama Bear: Despite Michael's murder, Taylor leaves Beverly Hills easily and changes her name because her adopted daughter Katy is at risk.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • The Oldest Profession: Her dirty secret. Olivia reveals this to Marisol in an attempt to get back at Taylor.
  • Put on a Bus: She only appears fleetingly in Season 2, then not for the rest of the season. She gets put on the bus again at the end of Season 3.
  • Skewed Priorities: Taylor wants to redecorate the house, but her husband keeps dissuading her because he's afraid of offending his crazy ex-wife, who's also an interior designer. When Marisol offers her heartfelt advice about what's really important in a marriage, Taylor only replies that she knew that Marisol wouldn't understand.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: She's much colder and more unpleasant when she comes back to Beverly Hills in Season 3. It's justified, since she has an adopted daughter she stole from the cartel and she's devastated that Marisol lied to her and put her in her book.
  • Trophy Wife

    Michael Stappord

Michael Stappord

Played by: Brett Cullen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/michael_stappord.png
"They're really not our friends. They're only nice to us because I'm a successful lawyer and you're my glamorous wife. Once they find out the truth, that is all going to change."

  • The Bus Came Back: For Season 3, after disappearing from Season 2.
  • Dinner and a Show: When Michael's ex-wife Olivia crashes his dinner party and throws a crystal heart at him, Marisol intervenes and forcibly shoves her out. This causes Michael's dinner guests to applaud her, and piquing Adrian Powell's creepy interest in Marisol.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: He gets suddenly murdered at the end of Season 3.
  • Happily Married
  • Put on a Bus: He doesn't appear at all in Season 2.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He rushes Season 3's Big Bad despite being handcuffed, and gets shot and killed.

    Flora Hernandez

Flora Hernandez

Played by: Paula Garces
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flora_hernandez.png

  • Asshole Victim: The more we learn about her Jerkass personality.
  • Blackmail: Flora was planning to blackmail her baby's father.
  • Dark Secret: Flora had one that only Rosie, Zoila, Carmen, and Valentina know. They agree to let it be buried with her, despite Rosie wishing to go to the police about it.
    • Adrian Powell was prostituting Flora. According to her last note, one of her encounters resulted in her getting raped and she blames Adrian for it.
    • She was pregnant at the time of her death and was planning to use her baby to leech off the father's money.
  • First-Episode Twist: Flora, the Powells' maid, is murdered at one of their dinner parties and one of the waiters was found holding the murder weapon. He just happens to be Marisol's son. She's posing as a maid to figure out who framed him for Flora's murder.
  • Missing White Woman Syndrome: Lampshaded by Carmen when Flora's murder and the suspected killer (who's white) is mentioned on page 42 of the newspaper.
Carmen: If Flora had been white, it would have been front page news.
  • My Death Is Just the Beginning: Flora's death brings Marisol into the group and a cavalcade of secrets behind the maids and their employers.
  • Rule of Pool: The pilot opens with a dinner party and Flora being fatally stabbed after a scuffle with her killer. She then stumbles out into the backyard, where everyone is located, and dies as she falls into the pool.
  • Sleeping with the Boss: With Adrian.

  • Happily Adopted: He's Marisol's adopted son.
  • Put on a Bus: He disappears completely after Season 1, not returning when his mother gets married or, in fact, at all.

    Sam Alexander

Sam Alexander

Played by: Wolé Parks
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sam_alexander.png

"I danced in all the great ballets..."

  • Fire-Forged Friends: Odessa and Carmen constantly clash, but when Odessa is diagnosed with cancer, Carmen puts aside their rivalry and they become friendlier
  • Incompatible Orientation: Odessa has feelings for the gay Alejandro.
  • Shadow Archetype: Downplayed, but Odessa is revealed to have a lot more in common with Carmen than she initially appears. Odessa is also a performer (she was a ballerina) who gave up her dreams for her job (because she lost her leg).
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Odessa is presumably Put on a Bus after Alejandro's death, though nothing comes of either her cancer or her relationship with Carmen.

    Alejandro Rubio

Alejandro Rubio

Played by: Matt Cedeño
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alejandro_rubio.png

  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Alejandro is abruptly and suddenly killed by the home invaders, getting shot by a stray bullet.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Despite his hairy back.
  • So Happy Together: A variant. While Alejandro and Carmen naturally don't love each other, Alejandro tells her that he'll protect Carmen and ensure that her career is successful even if they don't get married. And then he gets shot.
  • Straight Gay: From the way Carmen reacts when Alejandro introduces her to his boyfriend, their weren't any indications he was gay

    Olivia Rice

Olivia Rice

Played by: Valerie Mahaffey
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/olivia_rice.png
"I've put my life on hold waiting for him to get away from that woman. But if she has a baby, he'll be trapped forever."

  • Clingy Jealous Girl
  • Evil Red Head: She tried to humiliate Taylor cause of her secret past.
  • Psycho Ex-Wife: She crashes the Stappords' dinner party and creeps out everyone at the table until she chucks a crystal heart at him, forcing Marisol to intervene and kick her out.
