Mercenary Inc.:

First game party:

    Tristam
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/114_97.png
The swordsman and protagonist of the first game. He returns as the head of Mercenary Inc. in the second game, and acts as a goofy mentor for D.

  • Heroes Prefer Swords: He's the main character for the first game, and uses a sword.
  • Idiot Hero: He's really naive in the first game, letting Koohii fool him and escape twice. Then, he accepts a legendary crystal from Rita... only to discover it's powerless.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: He somehow keeps forgetting the innkeeper is Kaeli's sister, despite her telling him every day.
  • Playing with Fire: His main magic abilities are fire elemental.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's amused with this color. He also wears red and is one of the protagonists.

    Kaeli
A talented archer, and also the most stoic person of the party.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/116_8.png

  • Aloof Archer: She's quiet, talented with her bow, and quite emotionless.
  • Blow You Away: Her main magic abilities, combined with lightning.
  • Can't Catch Up: Due to having to carry Hiro while the team chases Rita, she was often ignored without any help while carrying him.
  • Multishot: One of her advanced skills shoots several arrows at once, hitting all enemies.
  • Only Sane Man:Seems to be this among Tristam, Reuben and Phoebe.
  • Out of Focus: Compared to Tristam, who plays as the head of Mercenary Inc and Phoebe and Reuben, who joins the player's party in certain parts of Crystal Story II, Kaeli got the least focus of her cameos with her appearing late right before the fight with the Water Guardian.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She was usually displayed like this in cutscenes
  • The Quiet One: At least that's what she says.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She hates spiders.

    Phoebe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/118_5.png
A loud girl who enjoys using her hammer a bit too much. She returns to the party for side quests in the second game.

  • Badass Adorable: Depicted as a cheerful and energetic character who bashes her foes with her hammer.
  • Blood Knight: Nearly everything she says involves smashing something or someone. And she's okay with smashing her comrades...
  • Cute Bruiser: She uses hammers and can be the hardest-hitting party member in terms of physical skills, particularly with Bash and later, Barrage.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Her main magic skills are earth-based, like "Quake".
  • Foo Fu: It's said she was taught "hammer-fu" by orcs as a kid.
  • Genki Girl: Especially given that she's enthusiastic on bashing everything with her hammer, and she often speaks as if she had her Caps Lock on.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: In the second game. She first shows up to find the Oracle, then to fight Rock when the party briefly splits at Crystalia.
  • No Indoor Voice: Usually, her text speech are in all upper case letters, and the original version of the first game lampshades it in the character introduction, though this characteristic of her is even more prominent in the second game.

    Reuben
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/120_3.png
A young man who uses spears and has a soft spot for ladies. Like Phoebe, he returns for some time in the second game.

  • An Ice Person: His magic skills are ice and water-based.
  • Butt-Monkey: Gets punched by Koohii or Kaeli in one scene in some of the sidequests. Even got scratched by Mr. Kitty in the last mission featuring him. Kaeli has to revive him several times.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He will hit on pretty much any girl he meets.
  • Gratuitous French: Constantly speaks in French in cutscenes, especially if intereact with woman.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Like Phoebe. He fills Lina's empty spot in the party during the time she's held in hostage by Rita.
  • Large Ham: Especially when boasting with women.
Reuben (when meeting D): I am the slithering cold that seeps into the hearts of women, the first snowflake that falls in winter, the cold waters of the deep sea... I am Reuben, the white knight!
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Like Tristam, he can't remember the first game's innkeeper is Kaeli's sister.
  • Prongs of Poseidon: Shows a large trident in Triton's Wrath, his final skill learned in the Fighter tree
  • Surrounded by Idiots: In the original Crystal Story, he is shown to regret joining the team and even claim he hates his allies. Averted in the remake, when all the dialogue about it is removed.

Second game party:

    D
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1d12ff471d371dcf0563ff2d3c39eac9.png
The protagonist of the second game, a young Dragon who was sent to stop Rita's evil plans. He unwillingly becomes a member of Mercenary Inc.

  • You Can't Go Home Again: He mentions that the portal he took was a one-way trip; once he went through it, he could never return to his world.

    Lina
A rogue who find D and introduces him to Mercenary Inc.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/945.png

  • Badass Boast: Two of her victory quotes, "I'll be the best thief in the world!" and "This game needs a harder difficulty!".
  • Blow You Away: Her primary element is wind/lightning.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Amongst the first three party members, she clearly fills the Thief role with the eponymous class unlocked first, and she starts with a weapon that boosts her speed.
  • The Gadfly: She often teases others, her party members and others likewise. Particularly early on she surprises D in a cutscene.
  • Gamer Chick: Downplayed, the hackpick she owns resembles a videogame controller with a video game built inside it, but there's still no implication of this trait.
  • Meaningful Name: One of the meanings of "Lina" in Persian is "light" with one of the meaning being "of little weight." Refering to her agile and fast nature.
  • Rebellious Princess: It's implied that she's the King of Crystalia's missing daughter.

    Mari
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/949.png
The youngest member of the party, and a talented cowgirl who is the sheriff's daughter and partner.

  • Apologetic Attacker: She does say "sorry" both when casting one of her skills, and it's also potentially one of her victory quotes that she says.
  • Badass Adorable: The cutest-looking of the four party members, and is definitely more than capable of pulling her own weight in battle.
  • Boom, Headshot!: One of her dialogue lines reserved for using her Limit Break.
  • Cute Bruiser:Don't be fooled by her kindhearted cute look, she can have high magic attack stat since she starts off with Elementalist Skill and can annihilate tons of enemies with the spells from that tree.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Her primary element is earth.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Amongst the first three party members in Chapter 1, she's the Mage and starts with the Elementalist class, and can dish massive damage with magic skills.
  • Guns Akimbo: Her animations shows that she actually dual wields her pistols, and one of her attack animations shoots both of them at once.
  • The Gunslinger: She uses guns as her weapon of choice, which fits with her background as the sheriff's daughter.
  • Girlish Pigtails: While these pigtails are tied down below her ears, they're there, and indicating her girlish personality.
  • Mage Marksman: She uses guns and is normally, by the virtue of her starting weapon and class, the magic user of the team. Also, one of her Limit Breaks is Magic Bullet, which shoots a large magic blast doing random elemental damage to all targets.
  • Missing Mom: The Sheriff in Dustop is her father, but there is no mention of her mother in the game.
  • Prone to Tears: When she cries, she does cries hard. She is also depicted crying this hard in her scene where she first appears.
  • Weapon Twirling:Her victory and magic casting animations has her twirl her two pistols.
  • Wingding Eyes: Her eyes become swirly in situations where she becomes unfazed, shocked or stunned like when she mistakes D's name for "Mr. Meteor."

    Kaz
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/953.png
A Demon who betrayed Rita and decided to stop her at any cost. He clashes with the party and then joins them.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Most of his usual expressions shows as this, fitting his aloof and ill-tempered nature.
  • Redemption Demotion: When you fight him at the Desert, he has over 1000 HP and can unleash all sorts of skills like poisoning you. When he joins your party later on, he has much less HP, and might not have all his skills he had as a boss, since you can choose which classes he takes. (On the plus side, that means he can and will also gain new ones.)
  • Shock and Awe: His Hurricane Limit Break calls down a barrage of thunderbolts.
  • Sinister Scythe: He uses scythes as his primary weapon of choice, fitting with his demonic appearance.
  • When He Smiles: He does have one expression where he smiles, such as when he agrees with his teammates.

Introduced in Crystal Story:

    Rita
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rita_8.png
An evil witch who was freed from her prison in Crystalia by her minions. She desires to steal the crystal to summon a terrible creature known as a Dargon. In CSII, she desires to open up the portal and enslave the Dargon King.
  • Big Bad: The main villain of the first two games, more obvious in the first game (and it's remake), while in the second game, She only appears directly much later.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Escapes custody in the first game after her defeat. This won't last long for the sequel, however...
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The remake make her pupils red, indicating the fact that she's the Big Bad.
  • The Unfought: In the first game, despite being the Big Bad. Subverted in the remake, where she is the post-game final boss with 3 lives.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: A common recurring thing in the first and second game. In the first game, she will escape after the party gets distracted due to their antics, and tells either Rock or Bop to deal with the mercenaries. In the sequel, she also retreats after being defeated for the first time. Her reappearance in Chapter 6 implies that she has successfully escapes again after being defeated again in Chapter 5.

    Rock
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4943.png
One of Rita's minions who assisted in freeing Rita from her prison.

    Bop
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4794.png
One of Rita's minions who assisted in freeing Rita from her prison.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He's capable of summoning monsters to assist him and cast spells, but he is shown to be laid back in cutscenes
  • Cat Folk: Resembles a Feline. Even called "cat-thing" by D

    Hiro
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5119.png
A "hero" introduced in Crystal Story who promised a high price of Gold when Rita is defeated.
  • Designated Hero: Despite his name being one vowel away from "Hero", he barely contribute anything to the story and fell into a single slap from Rita.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Given that his name sounds like "Hero", and is only there as a plot character posing to be a Fake Ultimate Hero, he is actually less capable than what he claims to be.
  • The Worf Effect: He gets knocked down by a single slap from Rita in the first boss cutscene in the first game.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Despite his name, he doesn't do much, with the four mercenaries doing most of the job. That being said, he takes the credit for defeating Rita in Crystal Story I.

    Koohii
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4978.png
A thief who's been stealing thing in Small Town. In Crystal Story II, she was Lina's former ally back in the theives guild.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: Has a little bunny attached to her zipper in Crystal Story II.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Lina, prior to the events of Crystal Story II.
  • Make My Monster Grow: As the (one of, in the Steam version, or only, in the original Flash version) Optional Boss in Crystal Story II, she actually has two lives instead of one. For the second phase? She suddenly becomes massive, to the point her head is out of the game screen in-battle!

    Mr. Kitty
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/930.png
A troublesome Kitty who keeps escaping his pet owner to summon various monster bosses
  • Cats Are Mean: This kitty not only tries to get away from his pet owner, but also summon various bosses to stop the party from getting to him.
  • Suddenly Voiced: In the Final mission, she announced in mean words that he is tired of Tristam and his team meddling with his plans.

    Ms. Bubbles
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/929_4.png
The owner of Mr. Kitty.

    Dargon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4990.png
A terrible creature hiding in the depths of Evil Cave until it was awakened by Rita with the Focus Crystal.
  • Adaptational Badass: The remake of the first game adds another extra health bar to deplete, and adds Judgement (yes, that Judgement also used by the Final Boss of Crystal Story II after it Turns Red).
  • Disc-One Final Boss: In the second game, another Dargon shows up and at first appears in similar way to the first one, but the story is clearly far from over after it is defeated.
  • Dracolich: A skeletal dragon.
  • Expy: It resembles Flamerus Rex from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. The main difference is that it is white like Flamerus Rex's reincarnation, Skullrus Rex.
  • Final Boss: The last big enemy that the Mercenary Inc has to face in the first game, resurrected by the Big Bad.
  • Significant Anagram: The misspelling on the corruption of "Dragon" is intentional, since it is revealed in the second game that its species serves as the Evil Counterpart to actual Dragons.

Introduced in Crystal Story II:

    Orcracle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4951.png
An oracle who resides in Orc Isle

    Carl

A robot built by Mari that can do various things like telling jokes and renaming the player
  • Ascended Extra: Set to be a party member in a currently (sadly) canceled project.
  • Robot Buddy: One that tells jokes, and also serves as a function to rename playable characters.

    Malloc
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4985.png
The Guardian of the Fire Crystal. Resides in a pyramid.
    Sylandra
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5006.png
A gorgon residing in Necropolis. Was Kaz's second-handed ally before he gets overthrown.
  • Snake People: She's a gorgon. Also, she's essentially a larger, recolored version of the gorgons (regular enemies) faced earlier.
  • The Starscream: The traitor that betrayed Kaz, before his Heel–Face Turn, who he was pursuing to get revenge on her.
    Orrora
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4904.png
The Guardian of the Earth Crystal.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: The Guardian of the Earth Crystal
  • The Unfought: Lampshaded in the game where Kaz pointed out that she gives the Earth Crystal without a fight. She explains Malloc did that because he just wants to play with the team.
    Namina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/407_3.png
The Guardian of the Wind Crystal.
  • The Unfought: Similar to the case with Orrora where she gives the Wind Crystal, without any conflict.
    Koras
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/korassmile.png
The Guardian of the Water Crystal. Resides in a frosty fort.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Rita brainwashed her to fight the party, to serve as a method of getting rid of them at best and as a distraction for her plans at worst.

    Dargon King
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4934.png
The King of Dargons residing in the Abyss. He serves as the final boss of Crystal Story II.
  • Dracolich: A skeletal dragon, like all of the Dargons, only just bigger and even more threatening.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: As revealed in Chapter 6, the Dargon King only serves as a distraction for D's team so Rita can collect Dargon Bones to create an army of hybrids.
  • Make My Monster Grow: While already big enough in the first form, the second and third phases become so huge that only the head is shown out of the Dargon King.
    Z
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zgrin.png
A dragon who was thrown in the world to protect it from the Dargons. He was completely rebellious at the Dragon Elders thinking it's a pathetic excuse to throw out the unwanted. He serves as a final boss in Chapter 6.

  • Were Dragon: In the second and last encounter, he transforms into a Dragon (with some Dargon parts, particularly
