- Black Bead Eyes: Anyone that isn't Clifford, unless you count the movie, Clifford's Puppy Days, or the 2019 series.
- Four-Fingered Hands: Every human character.
- Sphere Eyes: Only in the movie and the 2019 series.
Dogs
Clifford the Big Red Dog
- Voiced by: John Ritter, Lara Jill Miller (Clifford's Puppy Days), Tom Eastwood (UK), Frank Welker (Thinking Adventures)
- All-Loving Hero: He is affectionate to everyone, including Jetta.
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: He's a dog whose fur is red.
- Big Friendly Dog: He's practically the poster boy er...dog of this. Why'd you think he was called "Clifford The Big Red Dog"?
- Black Bead Eyes: Averts this in most installments except in Clifford's Puppy Days.
- Canis Major: Arguably the most famous example of a BIG dog, to the point that he provides the page image.
- Cartoon Dog Breed: Looks a bit like a bright red Lab or Golden Retriever, except for being, well, gigantic.
- Character Catchphrase: "Wouldja Wouldja Wouldja?" from Clifford's Puppy Days, complete with jumping.
- Cute Giant: An adorable dog who is gigantic; he also provides the page image.
- Cute Mute: Unlike in most media, where he can talk (albeit to other dogs), he's completely mute in the live-action film, though David Alan Grier was initially announced as his voice actor for his vocal effects.
- Gentle Giant: Emphasis on "giant".
- Loved by All: Everybody on Birdwell Island loves him.
- Nice Guy: Mild-mannered, gentle, sweet, friendly, playful, soft-hearted, and rarely has a mean bone in his body.
- Nobody Poops: Yeah...you probably don't want to think too hard about how people can clean up after him...
- Non-Standard Character Design: The only character without Black Bead Eyes in most media.
- Red Is Heroic: A red and heroic dog.
- Sickly Child Grew Up Strong: Clifford was actually born the runt of his litter.
- Sphere Eyes: And the only character with these to boot.
- The Voiceless: In the Thinking Adventures computer game, he only makes dog noises.
Cleo
- Voiced by: Cree Summer, Regine Candler (UK)
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: A purple dog.
- Character Catchphrase: "Have I ever steered you wrong?"
- Genki Girl: She's one spunky lassie.
- Hates Baths: "No Baths For Cleo". 'Nuf said.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Cleo may be naughty, smug, and selfish, but she's still amiable for the most part.
- Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The tomboyish, extroverted Masculine Girl to T-Bone's Feminine Boy.
- Tomboy: Dislikes having her fur done, is energetic, etc.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She is usually energetic and tomboyish but enjoys putting on cute little bows.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Often falls into this due to her overconfidence in her plans.
T-Bone
- Voiced by: Kel Mitchell, Benjamin Small (UK)
- Big Eater: T-Bone is a small dog with a big appetite.
- Butt-Monkey: He has lots of misfortunes come his way due to his lack of self-confidence.
- Cowardly Lion: He has his brave moments.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A yellow bulldog who is innocent.
- Height Angst: Because he's the shortest of the trio, he's self-conscious about his height.
- Lovable Coward: His defining character trait is how nervous he is.
- Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The shy Feminine Boy to Cleo's Masculine Girl.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The cowardly Sensitive Guy to Mac's Manly Man.
Machiavelli "Mac"
- Voiced by: Cam Clarke
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: A blue dog.
- Defrosting Ice King: Seems to rotate from being aloof to wanting to hang out with Clifford depending on the episode.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mac is egotistical, aloof and arrogant, but he still cares about his friends.
- Lean and Mean: Downplayed. He's the leanest of the male dogs but he's only a little mean.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Some episodes show that his name is short for Machiavelli.
- Preppy Name: Machiavelli is a big name, especially for a dog.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The conceited Manly Man to T-Bone's Sensitive Guy.
- Sixth Ranger: To Clifford's trio, when he actually decides to join in on Clifford's antics.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Oh yeah. You can tell Jetta's egoism has rubbed off on him.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Tummy Yummy treats.
Humans
Emily Elizabeth Howard
- Played by: Darby Camp
- Age Lift: Is a middle-schooler in the live-action film, while in most media she's in elementary school.
- Cheerful Child: She's a chipper girl.
- Costume Evolution: In the 2019 series, she switched from a pink dress to a yellow shirt.
- Full-Name Basis: Everybody always calls her "Emily Elizabeth". She only gets referred to by her first name once in a blue moon.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's blonde and is so nice that it was enough to overcome biology to make Clifford grow large.
- Nice Girl: The nicest human character.
- Pink Means Feminine: Wears a pink dress.
- Two First Names: In the books. Averted in the 2000 cartoon, which gave her the last name "Howard".
Charley
- Voiced by: Gary LeRoi Gray, Ogie Banks (Phonics)
- Cheerful Child: He’s often in a cheerful mood.
- Dreadlock Rasta: He wears this hairstyle.
- Fat and Skinny: Skinny to Vaz’s fat.
- No Full Name Given: His surname is never revealed.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The sports-loving Manly Man to Vaz's Sensitive Guy.
- Vocal Evolution: His voice is lower in the second season.
Vaz
- Voiced by: Ulysses Cuadra
- Butt-Monkey: Vaz is klutzy.
- Fat and Skinny: Fat to Charley’s skinny.
- The Klutz: He's a bit of a rhino in a china shop.
- No Full Name Given: Like Charley, he has no known last name.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The introverted Sensitive Guy to Charley's Manly Man.
- Shrinking Violet: He's somewhat shy.
Jetta Handover
- Voiced by: Kath Soucie
- Attention Whore: Especially in "And Baby Makes Four", where she spends the entire episode trying to hog attention away from her baby brother at his own party.
- In another episode she nominated herself for Islander of the Year, much to the complete bafflement of those listening. Luckily, she did not win the title.
- Disappeared Dad: Averted; she does have a father as seen in "And Baby Makes Four". He also shows up in "Fishing Lessons".
- The Friend Nobody Likes: A mild case, as she is part of the main circle of kids, but most have noted that Jetta tends to think of herself before others, and are often surprised when she acts otherwise.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She has a huge opinion of herself, though she does have a good side. It just takes some digging to find it.
- Lovable Alpha Bitch: Jetta is a snotty Rich Bitch but still has a heart.
- Meaningful Name: Her last name is "Handover", and Jetta often expects praise and favors from others even when it is not earned.
- Rich Bitch: Plenty of money, plenty of conceit.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Once she nominated herself as Islander Of The Year.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Emily and Charley, frequently. And especially true with her relationship with Clifford, who she is openly disdainful of due to his frequent interference but knows he's as loyal a friend as they come.
