Humans

Lux Village

    Dariel

Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dariel_ankokuheishi.png

A human that was raised as a demon. Despite his loyal service, the new leader of demons kicks him out due to his inability to use magic. After coming in contact with humans and settling down in a human village, however, it turns out that Dariel has a great potential in a whole different power system.

  • Action Dad: Becomes this early on in the story when his son is born, not long after Dariel discovers his Superpower Lottery and becomes the village's main defender.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Dariel was more than once motivated not by some grand creed, but by the sight of Marika's boobs.
  • Brainy Brunette: Brown haired and carries out his duties in a rational and reasonable manner.
  • Boring, but Practical: His administrative skills were glossed over when he was fired for being unable to use magic.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: Early on, he wears modest clothes, which concealed his Heroic Build. After the Time Skip, he tends to wear short-sleeved clothes that expose his muscular arms more often.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Gashita develops a strong man-crush on him after Dariel saves him, even forming a rivalry with Marika over Dariel's affection. Lizet is similarly rather fond of him, being The Glomp to the point that it reminds Dariel of Marika's bear hugs. Later on, Sakai often seeks comfort from Dariel whenever he gets upset after Smith passes away during the Time Skip and Sakai inherits his position.
  • Happily Adopted: By Granbarza who found him and raised him as his own.
  • Happily Married: He asks for Marika's hand in marriage early in the story, which she very happily accepts.
  • Human All Along: As Dariel spent his entire life raised among demons, he just assumed he was one himself despite never being able to use magic. After his exile and discovery that he could use Aura, he realized that he was actually a human.
  • Official Couple: With Marika. They marry early on in the story.
  • Raised by the Supernatural: A human raised by demons, but who could never use magic.
  • Superpower Lottery: Once he tries casting the aura skills used by humans, he and everyone present is shocked to realize that he can use all four basic skills (Slash, Hit, Sting and Protect), when most people can use only one. Furthermore, he can use all of them with great destructive power from the first try.
  • Vetinari Job Security: Almost nobody, including Dariel himself, had realized in their hyper-focus on Dariel's inability to use magic that Dariel is otherwise an irreplaceable administrator until the demon army starts to suffer setback after setback in his absence. Only Granbarza and the Demon Lord were fully aware of how important his contributions were.

    Marika

Voiced by: Akane Fujita (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marika_ankokuheishi.png

A woman who once dreamed of becoming an adventurer. Her Rescue Romance with Dariel quickly leads to a Relationship Upgrade, which is cemented when their son is born.

  • Babies Ever After: She eventually has a son with Dariel.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has the largest bust in the series and easily wins over Dariel with them.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: She often accidentally injures Dariel with her Super-Strength whenever she's being affectionate towards him.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Breaks up the fight between Alantsil and Granbarza first by splashing them with water then scolding them for fighting and trying to kill each other in front of Gran, saying that as both are Dariel's father (Alanstil is his birth father and Granbarza is his adopted father) they shouldn't set such a bad example for their grandson.
  • The Glomp: Forms a deadly combo with her Super-Strength.
  • Happily Married: She and Dariel marry fairly early into the story.
  • Official Couple: With Dariel. They marry early on in the story.
  • Super-Strength: A leftover from her early attempts at being an adventurer is her abnormal physical strength.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Will furiously retaliate if someone dares to bring harm to Dariel.

    Gilmas Envil

Voiced by: Kenji Hamada (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/envil_ankokuheishi.png

The village's leader, the guildmaster and Marika's father. He uses the Hit Aura.

    Erica

Voiced by: Keiko Watanabe (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erica_ankokuheishi.png

The mother of Marika and wife of Gilmas.

    Gashita

Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gashita_ankokuheishi.png

A young adventurer who forms a one-sided rivalry with Dariel, as until Dariel's arrival Gashita was the best and only adventurer in the Lux Village. His jealousy fades away once Dariel saves his life and he instead becomes Dariel's Fan Boy, if not something more. Gashita uses the Sting Aura to empower his arrows.

    Smith

Voiced by: Hiroshi Iwasaki (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smith_ankokuheishi.png

A perverted, yet competent elderly mythril blacksmith. His post is later taken up by Sakai.

  • Ambiguously Bi: Fond of women, but at the same time is suspiciously eager to wrestle his male apprentice while they wear nothing but loincloth.
  • Anti-Role Model: Smith is this to his apprentice Sakai, with the younger craftsman applying several of his mannerisms, for the better or the worse.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: When he isn't engaging in debauchery, he reveals himself to be a master of the craft and even displays a degree of combat abilities beyond what one would except at first glance.
  • Dirty Old Man: To the point that Dariel is shocked to find out that Smith is actually an esteemed craftsman.
  • Kavorka Man: Despite Smith's aged appearance and tendencies, his apprentice Sakai and a few other men lustfully venerate him.
  • Mr. Exposition: Explains more details about aura, items made of mythril and the general application of the two in battle.
  • The Perfectionist: The one thing he is absolutely serious about is his trade, being greatly critical of those who fail to live up to his standards.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Dies off-screen during the one-year Time Skip.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: Nonetheless clearly one of the best in his trade, showing deep knowledge of the craft, with his works being immediately recognizable by their sheer quality.

    Sakai

Voiced by: Tomohiro Ono (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakai_1.png

A young, dashing blacksmith studying the craft under Smith.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Despite getting attention from the ladies, he prefers confiding in older men. And then there is his fixation on his master...
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Sakai is muscular due to his work as a blacksmith and his master's... peculiar training methods. He is even briefly seen single-handedly pushing a carriage loaded with cargo all by himself with little difficulty.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Has a bishounen face, a muscular body and is a bit of a Chick Magnet In-Universe.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: To make it known to the audience that his profession enabled him to develop nice muscular arms.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: Becomes this after the Time Skip.

    Gran

Voiced by: Keiko Watanabe (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gran_1_0.png

The son of Dariel and Marika.

  • Babies Make Everything Better: He is the pillar on which Alantsil and Granbarza reconcile.
  • Dirty Kid: Gran is still a toddler, yet Dariel quickly notices that he has a bit too much interest in large breasts for his age.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Upon noticing his son's preference for well-endowed women, Dariel comments that Gran was definitely his son.

Adventurers and other guild members

    Laidy

Voiced by: Akari Kitou (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/laidy_ankokuheishi.png

The new hero-in-training.

  • Action Girl: As the future hero, she is this. Only a handful of people can actually overwhelm her in outright battle.
  • Friend to All Children: Is overcome by Gran's cuteness and asks for Dariel to let her hold him and even shows remarkable patience when Gran begins playing with her breasts.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her twintails symbolize her still being inexperienced.
  • Incompletely Trained: And she is well aware of it.

    Sessha

Voiced by: Hiromichi Tezuka (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sessha_ankokuheishi.png

A member of Laidy's party who fights with the spear.

    Satome

Voiced by: Yuuki Kudou (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/satome_ankokuheishi.png

A member of Laidy's party who specializes in protective maneuvers.

    Alantsil

Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alantsil_ankokuheishi.png

One of the most powerful warriors of his era, and is still alive and well.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: He came home from the battle field and found his wife murdered and his baby son missing.
  • Living Legend: The previous Hero, and the closest thing the setting has to a celebrity.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He reveals to Dariel, that he’s Alantsil's son.
  • Heroic Build: To the point that he can't keep his shirt fully buttoned while fighting.
  • Master of All: He has access to all 4 types of Aura in a world where most people get only one.
  • Silver Fox: Alantsil aged gracefully, to say the least.
  • Tragic Bigot: The destruction of his family was caused by a former demon general. Ever since then, he hated all demons from the bottom of his heart.

    Fittobitan

Voiced by: Takaki Otomari (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fittobitan_ankokuheishi.png

A conceited adventurer who looks down on the Lux Village and especially Dariel.

  • Foil:
    • To Bashbarza. Both of them are arrogant and irrationally dismissive of Dariel, with Bashbarza representing the demon side's rejection of Dariel, while Fittobitan represents similar Arbitrary Skepticism from the human side. In every other regard, they are opposites. Bashbarza is a Long-Haired Pretty Boy and one of the highest ranking members of the Demon Army and has a history with Dariel, while Fittobitan is an older, Small Name, Big Ego, mid-tier adventurer who immediately becomes a jerk to Dariel when they first meet.
    • To Alantsil. Both of them are old, yet physically fit men with strong prejudices. However, Alantsil is an overall Humble Pie despite his flashy fighting style. Fittobitan on the other hand is a classic Small Name, Big Ego. Furthermore, Fittobitan is mostly prejudiced against other humans, whereas Alantsil is emotionally scarred by a personal tragedy, which makes him utterly merciless towards any demon he encounters. Their interactions with Dariel end with different outcomes: Fittobitan ends up being an Overshadowed by Awesome Butt-Monkey, while Alantsil finally attains catharsis by reuniting with his long-lost son and even burries the hatchet with his old rival.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he is arrogant, he means well. He notably doesn't take very long to (begrudgingly) recognize Dariel's abilities and unlike Bashbarza he doesn't needlessly make things worse just because he is miffed.
  • Old Soldier: Visibly aged, yet still very fit for his age and still participates in battle.

    Bestfred

Voiced by: Kotaro Shinohara (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bestfred_1.png

An official from the Central Guild.

  • Brainy Brunette: Has brown hair and is also implied to be skilled in administration.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Much to Fittobitan's dismay, Bestfred isn't quick to let prejudices be reason enough to not engage in diplomacy with the demons.
    • He is also quick to accept the notion of negotiating with the Knockers.

Demons

Four Generals

    Four Generals as a whole
The Four Highest ranking subordinates of the Demon Lord, consisting of four members in each generation, with each of the members having mastery of a different magical element.
  • Elite Four: Their generation's four best users of their respective elements and the highest ranked active members of the Demon Lord's army.
  • Red Baron: Each member has a moniker related to their element.
    • Bashbarza: "Brilliant Fire".
    • Zebiantes: "Floral Wind"
    • Doroye: "Fertile Earth".
    • Bezalia: "Impure Water".

    Bashbarza

Voiced by: Atsushi Abe (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bashbarza_ankokuheishi.png

The new demon army warchief. He kickstarts the plot by firing Dariel, not realizing that doing so completely derails the army's logistics and bureaucracy. Acts as the head of the Four Generals.

  • Elemental Hair Colors: He has red hair and great fire magic.
  • Fatal Flaw: His inability to acknowledge his failures and accept Dariel's Boring, but Practical abilities leads him to several humiliations.
  • Fiery Redhead: His short temper and red hair make for a scary sight to behold once he gets angry.
  • Freudian Excuse: While he hides it well, part of his resentment towards Dariel is indirectly caused by his mother's pressure.
  • Locked into Strangeness: By the end of the anime, despite avoiding being absorbed into Salamandra's flesh, he looses sight on his left eye and he still has the horns he grew during the final battle.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Although his short temper kinda diminishes it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: By the end of his villain arc, Dariel and Granbarza both admit that they've severely neglected Bashbarza, despite never actually resenting him.
  • Karmic Nod: In the final episode, he is fully prepared to take any punishment for his actions, stating that his actions warrant his punishment.
  • The Resenter: Grows ever more frustrated every time it is revealed that many of the benefits the demon army enjoyed (himself included) and took for granted were actually thanks to Dariel.
  • Sketchy Successor: His leadership is way less effective than his father's.

    Zebiantes

Voiced by: Rumi Ōkubo (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zebiantes_ankokuheishi.png

One of the Four Generals. She is a domineering and sadistic woman, and enjoys collecting mithril magical devices.

  • Break the Haughty: Initially as arrogant and dismissive of Dariel as Bashbarza was. However; getting intimidated by Marika, losing multiple times to Dariel in a duel after he learns Aura, and nearly getting killed by Alantsil if not for Dariel protecting her; leads to a much improved attitude.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a sexy female demon with a voluptuous figure and skimpy clothes.
  • Stripperiffic: For a demon general, her outfit shows a lot of skin.
  • Sultry Bangs: Her hair hides her right eye, adding to her sex appeal.

    Doroye

Voiced by: Mai Nakahara (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doroye_ankokuheishi.png

One of the Four Generals. She is one of the few who has acknowledged Dariel from the beginning. Even after Dariel's dismissal, she continues to search for him and suggests to bring him back.

  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has an opening showing some of her cleavage.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Mastered Earth Magic.
  • Neutral Female: Ironically, despite being the only General opposed to firing Dariel, she doesn't actually succeed in making contact with him later on in the anime.
  • Only Sane Woman: The only person amongst the current Four Generals that opposed firing Dariel over not having magic.

    Bezalia

Voiced by: Satoshi Tsuruoka (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beseria_ankokuheishi.png

One of the Four Generals, representing the Water element.

  • Bit Character: He has the least screen time and voice lines in the anime of Four Generals. He is also completely detached from the plot, outside of supporting Bashbarza's decision to oust Dariel in the prologue.
  • Dramatic Irony: While he is a Bit Character contributing very little to the plot, unbeknown to him his predecessor was responsible for Dariel ending up being adopted by Granbarza, which kickstarted the whole plot.
  • Holy Water: Inverted. He is a demon who uses water magic, but his outfit ironically resembles a priest's outfit.
  • Making a Splash: He uses Water Magic, being apparently good enough to reach the rank of one of the Four Generals.

Other Demons

    Lizet

Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lizet_ankokuheishi.png

One of the demons' admins, but lower ranked than the Four Generals.

  • The Glomp: His first reaction upon reuniting with Dariel is to jump at him and give him a big, strong hug.
  • High-Class Glass: Wears a monocle and belongs to the upper echelons of the demon army.
  • Making a Splash: Can use Water magic.

    Granbarza

Voiced by: Masaki Terasoma (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/granbaza_ankokuheishi.png

The Living Legend of demonkind and Bashbarza's father. One day, he found young Dariel orphaned in the battlefield and decided to raise him as a pupil/adoptive son. When he retires from his post in the Four Generals, his son succeeds him with disastrous consequences.

  • Brought Down to Badass: Even though he retired after suffering massive damage from the hero's attacks, he can still casually create a small sun as a rehabilitation exercise.
  • Living Legend: He is absolutely respected by all of demonkind for his power and achievements.
  • Parental Favoritism: Subverted. He always hoped that his biological son and adopted son would cooperate and complement each other (Bashbarza's vast magic talent making up for Dariel's lack of magic, while Dariel would continue to take care of the bureaucracy like he did under Granbarza). Unfortunately, Bashbarza's narcissism and inability to understand the importance of administrative work sank any chance of that happening.
  • Parental Neglect: Zig-Zagged. He raised Dariel with love, but his job as an officer distanced him from his wife and Bashbarza.
  • Silver Fox: The demon side's equivalent to Alantsil in this regard.

    Demon Lord

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (young human form), Takaya Kuroda (monster form), Daisuke Hirakawa (adult human form)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mao_1.png

The ruler of demons. While he has a mostly hands-off approach to ruling, he is far from unaware of the changes happening in his army.

  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's only known as the Demon Lord. His actual name, if he has one, is unknown.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: The Demon Lord's appearance is different to everyone who looks at him. Bashbarza sees him as a young teenage boy, while his father Granbarza sees him as a large dragon. It actually gets discussed in the case of the latter, when Granbarza actually asks the Demon Lord when he started to use the appearance of a dragon. This actually impresses the Demon Lord, who explains that his appearance serves as a reflection of whoever is observing him. The immature and petulant Bashbarza sees a bratty teenager, while his calmer and more powerful father sees a mighty dragon.
  • Maou the Demon King: He's the king who rules over the demons.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Zigzagged. He is never seen outside his throne room, but he is always carefully observing his subordinates, and will directly pull some strings from time to time.
  • Secret Test of Character:
    • As listed in A Form You Are Comfortable With just meeting him is a good way to judge a person's character. Tellingly, when Bashbarza gives up on his grudge against Dariel and meets the Demon Lord again, Bashbarza no longer sees the Demon Lord as a child, but as a young man, symbolizing Bashbarza himself becoming more mature.
    • He gives Bashbarza a more direct one at the end of the anime: Bashbarza is given the opportunity to either undergo literal hell along with previous members of the Four General as full punishment or get a one-time pardon on account of his youth and resume his duties. Bashbarza, firmly seeking to change for the better unflinchingly chooses hell, and he is about to be dragged by the cursed souls - only for the Demon Lord to close the gateway, much to Bashbarza's surprise. As it turns out, had Bashbarza took the pardon, the Demon Lord would briefly give him a few seconds of a Hope Spot before throwing him into hell regardless. But since he shown the resolve to make amends, the Demon Lord instead changes his punishment into a banishment, explicitly finding it fitting given how Bashbarza himself banished Dariel at the start of the story.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Outlawed dangerous magic, appreciated Dariel's bureaucratic abilities, tried to subtly nudge Bashbarza away from needlessly costly projects without publicly humiliating his subordinate in the process and even personally punishes his most corrupt generals.

Magical Beasts

    General Tropes
Ancient entities wielding the power of the basic natural elements. They are so powerful that only forbidden magic can control them, and even that is easier said than done...
  • Always Someone Better: Their elemental magic far exceeds that of the Four Generals.
  • Olympus Mons: The most powerful magical beings in the setting, rivaled only by the Demon Lord himself. Notably, despite having the means to control, the Demon Lord flat out dismisses the option simply because even forbidden magic only gets one so far before backfiring.
  • True Companions: While they usually live alone, they have a degree comradery and respect for each other.

    Salamandra
The Magical Beast of Fire.

    Gigantomachia
The Magical Beast of Earth.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: They command over the earth, even having a special connection to mythril.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Grants Dariel's mytril weapon an upgrade shortly before the anime's final battle.

Others

    Knockers
A species of demi-humans who are essential in mythril mining.
  • Nominal Importance: Invoked. All of them have names and are fond of Dariel in particular for being their first superior to have regularly used their names.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: All of them, despite looking superficially eerie at first glance.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Dariel. Especially once he saves their lives after they reunite.
