Flio's Party

    In General
  • Famed In-Story: Fenrys is well know among demons both in her own right for having combat power on par with the Infernal Four and being the sister of one of said Infernal Four. Both she and Flio also accumulate fame as adventurers when they bring in defeated monsters ordinary humans can't hope to beat.
  • Happily Married: After Flio accepts his marriage with Fenrys as more than just a convenience, they become a properly loving couple.
  • Interspecies Romance: Flio and Fenrys are the first and most prominent example of a romantic relationship between someone from the human races and someone from the demon races.
  • Marriage of Convenience: Flio suggested that he and Fenrys call each other spouses to make it easy for him to explain why the latter is following him around. Fenrys quickly likes the idea of being bonded that way and Flio eventually falls in love with her for real.
  • Party of Representatives: Flio's party is the one group that has members of the human and demonic races within a single faction, and he is advised the only reason the two warring factions accept this is because they are powerful enough to qualify as a third faction.
  • With This Ring: Flio gives Fenrys a ring that gives a minor stat-boost while explaining to her the romantic symbolism of such a gesture.

    Flio né Banaza

Flio né Banaza

Voiced by: Satoshi Hino (Japanese), Mauricio Ortiz-Segura (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flio_lv2_cheat.png

Formerly Banaza, a merchant from another world. He was originally summoned as the 198th Hero Candidate, but he is quickly rejected by the Kingdom of Klyrode for having terrible starting stats. After slaying a slime, he levels up and gets infinite stats. Not wanting to draw attention, he changes his name to Flio and becomes an adventurer to make a living. Despite now wielding more magical power than anyone in the world, he doesn't want to side with either humans or demons in the war.

  • Achievements in Ignorance:
    • He only wanted to make Delaveza Forest safe for himself when he casted the purification spell, not realizing he killed one of the Infernal Four and a large portion of the demon forces in the process. He only realizes what he did over a month after the fact when Uliminas brings it up.
    • He also unknowingly killed the wyverns that Yuigarde sends to search for Gholl as collateral damage from using time magic to save Gholl. Celbua brings that to his attention when he tries to help one surviving wyvern.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: He becomes afraid of his own power after he finds out that his purification spell wiped out Fenrys' brother and his entire troop.
  • All-Loving Hero: In his original world, Flio was the only one to be nice to the oppressed non-humans. In the new world, he keeps this up, being friendly to humans and demons alike unless an individual of either side gives him a reason not to, and even then, he can be quite forgiving.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a very nice guy who only wants to live peacefully and prefers to avoid conflict whenever possible, but if someone harms his loved ones, especially his wife Fenrys, he will show no mercy.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": He asks Fenrys to not call him "Master" because he doesn't like treating demihumans as slaves. He also doesn't like Hiya calling him the "Exalted One".
  • Gender Bender: He spends a few moments as a woman using his shapeshifting magic before deciding to go back to being a man.
  • Love Epiphany: He realizes he is in love with Fenrys when he sees her take a lethal attack from Hiya to protect him and he couldn't bear to lose her.
  • Magikarp Power: Exaggerated. His level one stats are average at best, but after reaching level two, his stats become infinite.
  • Meaningful Rename: He changes his name from Banaza to Flio, at first to avoid recognition from Klyrode as the rejected hero candidate, and then to affirm that he is now a resident of the new world.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: While his offer of help to a (seemingly) little girl is sincere, Balirossa publicly accuses him of malicious intentions, and it takes him offering to take her and her subordinates with them to allay suspicions. After Flio manages to prove his sincerity, Balirossa apologizes for her accusations.
  • New Life in Another World Bonus: His bonus is that as soon as he reaches Level 2, all his stats become infinite. It is later revealed that due to a mistake on the deities' part, he had received a double dose of the usual blessing.
  • Nice Guy: He's a very nice and friendly guy.
  • Power Copying: Due to his skill stat being infinite, he has an incredible passive ability to copy and master any magic used on him. Including that of the deities of the Celestial Plane, which means even they have to be careful in how they deal with him.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: In exchange for his silence so that Klyrode does not lose face, the King grants him gifts and sends him off to a forest twenty days away by carriage. Flio himself thought this was reasonable, up until he discovers the King intended for him to die in a forest occupied by demonic forces and his gifts includes a bag tampered with enchantments to summon monsters and his weapons are sub-par.
  • Refusal of the Call: When invited by the king to join Klyrode's military forces due to his prowess in slaying powerful monsters, he firmly refuses, thinking to himself that he has no personal grudge against the demons he would be fighting.
  • Refused by the Call: Though summoned by the Kingdom of Klyrode to be a hero candidate, he is quickly rejected from consideration after his starting stats are revealed to be average at best.
  • Romantic Fake–Real Turn: Flio proposed Fenrys to marry him just because he needed an excuse for her following him everywhere. Fenrys saw their marriage as real from the start, but Flio takes a bit longer to fall in love with her for real.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When the Golden-Haired Hero comes to his home accompanied by a large army to force him to surrender himself, Flio uses magic to teleport himself, Fenrys, their houseguests, and their entire house to a distant location.
  • Teleportation: He can cast powerful teleportation spells that cannot be matched by most others.
  • Trapped in Another World: He ended up trapped in the other world because his summoners forgot to return him to his original world while the portal was open and it was impossible to reopen it.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He can magically change his appearance to avoid being recognised by Klyrode as the rejected hero candidate.
  • We Named the Monkey "Jack": "Flio" was the name of his old dog and he chose it as his new name without thinking when he registered at the guild.
  • World's Strongest Man: After leveling up for the first time, Flio's stats become infinite, making him the strongest Hero Candidate to have ever existed.

    Fenrys

Fenrys

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Megan Shipman (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fenrys_lv2_cheat.png

A lupine demon and sister of Fengaryl, one of the Infernal Four of the Dark Army. She agrees to be Flio's wife after he defeats her.

  • All Amazons Want Hercules: She's considered a peer of the Infernal Four in terms of combat strength. After Flio defeats her and asks her to be his wife for convenience, she's overjoyed because every female of her race wants a strong mate.
  • Angst? What Angst?: In-Universe. To the surprise of both Flio and Uliminas, Fenrys does not care that Flio killed her brother. Her brother was a soldier in the middle of a war and to die to a powerful opponent is what he would have wanted and to mourn him would be an insult to his memory and his pride as a soldier.
  • Anime Hair: In her human form, her hair looks like wolf ears.
  • Animorphism: She can switch between giant wolf and human forms.
  • Canis Major: Her lupine form is a giant wolf monster.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She likes to make it clear to other women that Flio is her husband and she has no intention of sharing him with anyone.
  • Death Glare: When the party first meets Sybe, Fenrys gives it a glare so potent it immediately surrenders in fear.
  • Defecting for Love: She defects from the Dark Army after she falls in love with Flio, deciding to live as his wife and help him achieve coexistence between races.
  • "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: Fenrys' voice actress, Rie Kugimiya, sings the opening song for the anime.
  • Dual Age Modes: She has both a humanoid adult and child forms.
  • The Fake Cutie: Before she met Flio, she used to transform into a little girl and attempted to lure humans into the Delaveza Forest and eat them.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: She speaks in a polite manner, fitting for her role as Flio's sweet wife.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Zigzagged. She likes when Flio shows off his power and is initially pleased when he brutalizes Hiya on her behalf, but quickly becomes confused when she realizes she wants him to stop, because she also loves his kindness and doesn't want him to lose that on her behalf.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She doesn't seem to understand why Flio gets so flustered when she turns back to her adult human form and ends up naked in front of him.
  • In-Series Nickname: Flio gives her the nickname "Rys".
  • It Meant Something to Me: Unlike Flio who initially viewed their marriage only as a convenience, Fenrys treated it as real from the start and told him as such. She is extremely happy to hear that Flio developed real feelings for her.
  • Lethal Chef: Her starting skills in cooking leave a lot to be desired for the human palate since lupines tend to eat their meat raw. Attending cooking classes helps Fenrys defy this.
  • Love Redeems: Before she met Flio, Fenrys was a merciless and brutal warrior who tried to trick humans into going to the Delaveza Forest to feed them to her brother. After Flio spares her life and she falls in love with him, Fenrys comes to admire his ideals and helps him try and achieve peaceful coexistence between humans and demons.
  • Mystical White Hair: She's a lupine demon with silver hair.
  • Naked on Arrival: Her adult version of her humanoid form is first introduced completely in the buff.
  • Pointy Ears: Her human form has pointy ears.
  • Proud Warrior Race Girl: Her lupine race respects power and strength above anything, and she takes great pride in it. Even after she mellows out thanks to Flio, Fenrys won't allow anyone to make light of her pride as a lupine warrior.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: At first, she was only attracted to Flio because of his overwhelming power, but she quickly grows to love him for his kindness and compassion as well.
  • Taking the Bullet: She takes a lethal attack that Hiya intended for Flio. Fortunately, Flio becomes able to use exceptionally powerful magic just in time to save her.
  • Tattle Tail: When Fenrys is feeling emotional, her tail tends to wag, especially when in happiness.
  • Through His Stomach: She initially doesn't understand human cuisine because demons usually only eat raw meat, so she takes cooking lessons to become a better wife for Flio who is pleased with the results.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She's a very loving and devoted wife to Flio, is a good cook, uses very polite speech patterns, and has an iron will due to belonging to a warrior demon race.

    Sybe

Sybe

Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sybe_lv2_cheat.png

The last surviving member of the psychobear herd that attacked the Golden-Haired Hero's party.

  • Bears Are Bad News: Originally was a huge and deadly bear. After being tamed by Flio, he gets transformed into a cute and small unicorn-rabbit.
  • Beary Friendly: After being tamed by Flio, Sybe becomes very friendly and often helps out at Blossom's vegetable field.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When he first meets the party, he surrenders the instant he realizes Fenrys is far above his weight class.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": Flio calls him Sybe, taken from the syllables in psychobear.
  • Mi'raj: Sybe's unicorn-rabbit form resembles a cute bunny with a single horn.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: When transformed into a unicorn-rabbit, Sybe is incredibly adorable.
  • Team Pet: After being tamed, he becomes the beloved pet of the party.

Balirossa and her Knights

    In General
A group of knights Flio and Fenrys first meet while at the adventuring guild. After Flio saves their lives, twice, they ask him to mentor them.
  • Amazon Brigade: They're an all-woman squad of knights. They're highly inexperienced though.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Blue for Balirossa, red for Blossom, green for Byleri, and purple for Belano.
  • Epic Fail: Their training bout with a lone monster (a psychobear in the manga and a giant boar in the anime) ends in miserable failure for them.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The chivalrous knight Balirossa is Choleric, the outgoing farmer Blossom is Sanguine, the caring Animal Lover Byleri is Phlegmatic, and the quiet mage Belano is Melancholic.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: They're a reasonably competent squad by the Kingdom of Klyrode's standards, if inexperienced, but they tend to be grossly outmatched by Flio, Fenrys, and the more powerful demonic beings. Part of the problem as Flio notes is that they aren't suited to be combatants to begin with.
  • Pretty Freeloaders: They take pains to defy this trope by helping Flio and Fenrys with household chores. When Hiya joins them and does it better, they are briefly worried about being considered bums before they find new work.
  • Refreshingly Normal Life-Choice: After quitting the knights, most of them find more mundane work. Blossom farms the land at Flio's home, Byleri tames and tends to horse-like magic beings, and Belano is given a teaching position at a local magic school. Only Balirossa does something combat-related by becoming an adventurer. All of them are much happier with their new callings than they ever were as part of Klyrode's military.
  • Resign in Protest: After getting to know Fenrys and Gholl of the demon races, they started questioning everything they were taught, but the last straw was the Golden-Haired Hero trying to force Flio into serving under him by showing up to his home with an army. This results in them deserting Klyrode's army in favour of sticking with their friends to protest the Golden-Haired Hero's the Kingdom of Klyrode's actions.
  • Theme Naming: All their names start with B.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Under Flio's and Fenrys' tutelage, they significantly improve from being greenhorns to being far better than the average knights Klyrode can field.

    Balirossa

Balirossa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/balirossa_lv2_cheat.png

Leader of her squad of knights.

  • Fallen Princess: She's a noble, but her family has fallen on hard times. Her serving in the army as a knight is her way of trying to restore her house to glory.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a blonde woman with a noble and chivalrous personality fitting of a knight.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Her request to learn under Flio was supposed to have an additional benefit of letting her get close enough to him to marry him and have his help restore her house. Her plan fails before it can begin when Flio introduces Fenrys as his wife.
  • Rescue Romance: She starts developing feelings for Gholl after he drinks a strong solvent to save her from being melted alive inside the Scouring Gourd and then uses all of his magical energy to heal her badly burned body instead of healing himself.
  • Tsundere: Towards Gholl. She feels wary of him because he's the Dark One and refuses his advances at her because she thinks she shouldn't forgive him for being the ruler of the demons that are at war with humanity. After he renounces to his title and becomes another of Flio's houseguests, Balirossa is the only one who doesn't want to warm up to Gholl and claims that she'll continue to keep an eye on him, but she slowly develops feelings for him.

Others

    Hiya

Hiya

Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Maganda Marie (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiya_lv2_cheat.png

Djinn of the Wellspring of Light and Dark. She was sealed away long ago before being freed.

  • Break the Haughty: Due to her mastery of all the world's magic, this caused Hiya to develop an arrogant personality. When Flio unwittingly gains the time rewind ability, Hiya is befuddled over how a mere human was able to achieve such a skill and became further enraged when Flio lands a hit on her. She haughtily rants about her status only to devolve into fearfully begging for her life. Upon being healed by Flio and given the chance of becoming his servant, any trace of her egotistical personality was extinguished with her referring to Flio as the "supreme one."
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Sort of. After Flio beats the living daylights out of her, Fenrys convinces him to make Hiya into his personal attendant because that's safer than letting her go free and potentially cause disasters by granting random people's wishes. Hiya also comes to genuinely respect Flio for his strength and loyally serves him from then on.
  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. She is accepted into Flio's group despite her attacking them and almost killing Fenrys, only because Fenrys insisted despite her being upset at losing. She quickly proves to be a loyal subordinate of Flio by helping with Damalynas' own attack.
  • Eyes Always Shut: She keeps her eyes closed most of the time.
  • Holy Halo: She's a djinn with a halo that floats behind her head.
  • Magical Barefooter: She's a barefoot djinn with great magical power.

  • The Peeping Tom: Hiya spies on Flio and Fenrys having their moment of intimacy to their great consternation.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She is capable of great magic power, and capable of taking the lives of half the population of a continent as the price of her granting wishes.
  • Pointy Ears: She has long elvish ears.
  • Power at a Price: She grants wishes in exchange for millions of human lives.
  • Squishy Wizard: She can use highly advanced and powerful magic, but the moment Flio acquires her spells and manages to bypass her defensive magic, she's completely defenseless against his punches and surrenders.

    Damalynas

Damalynas

Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/damalynas_lv2_cheat.png

Grand Magus of Midnight. She was sealed away long ago before being freed.

  • The Archmage: Excluding Flio, she is the most powerful mage of human origin in the setting. She's powerful enough to kick Hiya out of her own mindscape when she feels she's going too far.
  • Butt-Monkey: After she gets trapped inside Hiya's mindscape, she becomes a frequent victim of sexual harassment from Hiya who wants to use her to experiment with sexual intimacy.
  • Demonic Possession: She possesses Tsuya in her first appearance in order to regain her physical form.
  • Hot Witch: She's a dark-skinned, buxom witch in a revealing outfit.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: The neckline of her outfit extends from her cleavage to past her navel.
  • Pointy Ears: She has pointy ears.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: After she was defeated by a hero ages ago, her soul was sealed inside a pedestal with the sword sealing Hiya on top of it. After the Golden-Haired Hero removes the sword, both Damalynas and Hiya are freed.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: Following her defeat, Hiya keeps her prisoner inside her mindscape. Hiya can freely communicate with Damalynas, but Damalynas can't do much to influence the outside world.

    Wyne

Wyne

A young female wyvern who is found by Flio and Fenrys after all of her wyvern companions were kiled by Flio's time reversal spell. She gets attached to Flio and Fenrys because of her kindness to her, becoming their adopted daughter.

  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Flio and his human friends are disturbed when Wyne reveals she ate the corpses of her fallen wyvern comrades. To her race, this is seen as a way to strengthen their species by devouring the deceased for the prosperity of the stronger and younger ones, and she doesn't understand why humans bury their dead because she sees it as treating them like "garbage".
  • Godiva Hair: She's first seen completely naked, with only her hair covering her naughty bits.
  • Happily Adopted: She gets herself adopted by Flio and Fenrys, who she loves as her parents.

  • Sole Survivor: She's the only survivor of the wyvern group that was killed by Flio's time reversal spell.

  • Weredragon: She's a wyvern with the ability to transform into a young girl.

Kingdom of Klyrode

In General

    In General
The most important of the human kingdoms, due to being the ones that border the territories of the demon races and therefore the ones charged with the responsibility of keeping them at bay.
  • Fantastic Naming Convention: People of high status are not referred to by their given name. That's why the Golden-Haired Hero and First Princess are referred to that way.

Royal Family

    King of Klyrode

Voiced by: Tomoyuki Shimura (Japanese), Barry Yandell (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_klyrode.png

King of the Kingdom of Klyrode. He was the one who arrange for Flio to die in Delaveza Forest.

  • Adipose Rex: He is an overweight king.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's only ever referred to as the king.
  • Fat Bastard: The fat king is callous enough to send Flio to die while lying about it. It also turns out he was embezzling funds that were supposed to be for the kingdom as a whole for his personal use.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After his corruption and embezzlement got exposed, rather than facing the consequences he ran away with a handful of the treasury's money.
  • White-Collar Crime: He was embezzling funds that were meant to be used for his kingdom as a whole to line his personal pockets. According to his daughter's adviser, nearly a fifth of the expenditures during his reign is unaccounted for. The First Princess is furious to learn that he was robbing the kingdom blind even as he said they were short on funds to finance the war effort.

    Elizabeth Klyrode

Elizabeth Klyrode

Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi (Japanese), Naya Moreno (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/first_princess.png

First princess of the Kingdom of Klyrode. She later becomes queen after her father flees the country.

  • Calling the Old Man Out: She calls out her father over his callous treatment of Flio in sending him to die in a forest occupied by demonic forces.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: She always speaks very politely to show her status as royalty.
  • The High Queen: Once she ascends to the throne, Elizabeth proves to be a benevolent ruler who is adored by her people.
  • Hime Cut: She's a princess with blunt bangs, bra strap length sidelocks, and very long straight hair.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: She wears a beautiful dress perfect for a princess.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As opposed to her father, Elizabeth recognizes Flio's power, yet she doesn't try to force him to side with humanity in the war because she knows her father wronged him in unforgivable ways. The most she does is negotiating with Flio to have him protect the lives of human civilians from demons while she allows him to continue living as he pleases.
  • Regal Ringlets: She's a princess with her hair styled into ringlets.
  • Superior Successor: After assuming power, she proves to be a far better monarch than her father ever was. She ordered her troops to change tactics instead of continuing to face the demon army head-on in hopeless battles, and the traps and guerrilla tactics work far better. She also doesn't embezzle funds from the treasury like her father is discovered to have done, so there is more spending for the good of the kingdom.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: She's very beautiful, in sharp contrast to her father who is a fat and ugly old man with a big nose.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: After she's crowned as queen, Elizabeth is beloved by her subjects.
  • Women Are Wiser: She's a much wiser, more rational, and well-intentioned ruler than her father was before her.
  • You Are in Command Now: Her father and most of the kingdom's mages are left unconscious after casting a large-scale purification spell to drive away the Dark Army. In her father's absence, she takes over as ruler.

    Golden-Haired Hero

Golden-Haired Hero

Voiced by: Taishi Murata (Japanese), Monty Thompson (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/golden_haired_hero.png

The man appointed as the Kingdom of Klyrode's hero after he is appraised to have amazing starting stats.

  • Broken Pedestal: As his failures pile up while he refuses to accept responsibility for it, the people that once thought he was the destined hero who'd defeat the demons lose faith in him. It culminates in his status as hero being stripped and him going on the run with a bounty on him.
  • Crutch Character: He has amazing starting stats, to the point that Klyrode thought he was the hero that could beat the demonic forces, but his stats never improved beyond level 1 to his great frustration and he can't hope to handle the more powerful beings.
  • Driven by Envy: He sends Hiya to assassinate Flio because he's extremely jealous of him being able to use advanced magic.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's only referred to as the "Hero". Later on, he chooses to call himself the "Golden-Haired Hero" to have his own title in case a new Hero is summoned.
  • Failure Hero: He is initially lauded as the chosen hero Klyrode was looking for, but when in actual danger, he is quick to fold and blame others for the failure of his missions. Eventually, his failures and arrogance become too intolerable and the First Princess' first decree after assuming power from her unconscious father is to revoke his status as hero.
  • Forced Transformation: He gets turned into a giant monster against his will by Damalynas upon her summoning.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: To his credit, he does put in the work to try and get stronger, as by Episode 2 he's shown to be Level 91. Unfortunately, an increase in level doesn't translate to an increase in stats, much to his frustration.
  • Jerkass: He's arrogant, vain and petty to the core, treating others like crap even though he's just a coward.
  • Never My Fault: He never accepts responsibility for his failures, pushing blame onto others as much as he can. No one buys it.
  • No Name Given: His name apparently begins with an "A", but other than that, we do not learn his real name.
  • The Poorly Chosen One: He was selected to be Klyrode's chosen hero due to his high starting stats, but they do not get higher through leveling up.
  • Stealing from Thieves: This is how he justifies committing actual highway robbery. He, correctly at that, deduces that between the great treasures in the cart and the fact they were on a little-used road, the cart operators clearly weren't above board.

    Tsuya

Tsuya

Voiced by: Mikako Takahashi (Japanese), Alexis Tipton (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsuya_lv2_cheat.png

One of the servants assigned to cater to the Golden-Haired Hero.

  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has a very large opening exposing her cleavage.
  • Love Martyr: Because of the Golden-Haired Hero, she's forced to become a fugitive and he continues getting them into all sort of messes everywhere they go, but Tsuya still wouldn't want to be anywhere but with him.
  • Morality Pet: The Golden-Haired Hero's positive relationship with Tsuya is his only redeeming trait.
  • Satellite Character: She follows the Golden-Haired Hero everywhere he goes and doesn't get much of a personality besides that.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: She wears a dress with a slit on both sides.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is loyal to the Golden-Haired Hero to the bitter end, even following him when he is stripped of his status and forced to go on the run.

Demon Forces

    In General
  • Best Her to Bed Her: Among the Lupine demons specifically, Fenrys says that if one Lupine wants to mate with another Lupine, they have to court them by fighting them and win. If they lose, they are rejected.
  • Challenging the Chief: It is possible for anyone to challenge the current Demon King for the title using a ritual duel. That said, Calsi'im fears the potential political instability that could come if anyone not of the line of the original Dark One successfully claims the title.
  • The Coup: When rumours spread of Yuigarde's weakness, Zanzibar takes advantage to attempt a coup.
  • Enemy Civil War: Calsi'im tells his fellow demons that if the various demon tribes start squabbling among themselves, they will fall before the humans, which is why he stands opposed to Zanzibar's coup.
  • Exotic Extended Marriage: It is common for the Demon King to have multiple brides.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Some demon tribes, like the wyverns, practice mortuary cannibalism. Reasons for this practice vary, with one being to help the tribe even in death.
  • Might Makes Right: Demons as a whole tend to favour prowess in combat above all else, and a lot of their rhetoric is about refusing to submit to weakling humans. Some are more extreme and/or obvious about it than others.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Demons are capable of changing forms if they have enough control over their malicium.

King of all the demon races.

  • Abdicate the Throne: After his brother Yuigarde starts a coup, rather than trying to fight him to stay in power, Gholl chooses to abdicate and allows Yuigarde to become the next Dark One.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Balirossa runs for the hills whenever Gholl tries to make a pass at her.
  • Amazon Chaser: He loves Balirossa for her strong and brave spirit which makes her a noble warrior.
  • Benevolent Boss: Wherever possible, he tries to keep his troops alive, even if he has to personally tend to matters that his loyal subordinates wish he'd delegate.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He might be the nicest Demon King there has ever been, but he won't forgive anyone who mistreats his subordinates, especially Uliminas.
  • Hades Shaded: He's a Demon King with very dark skin.
  • Horned Humanoid: He's a humanoid demon with horns on his head.
  • Love at First Punch: He quickly falls for Balirossa after she points her sword at him in their first meeting.
  • Maou the Demon King: He's the supreme ruler of demons and the ultimate enemy to mankind, but he actually has little interest in exterminating humanity and actually prefers to hang out with Flio's party for fun.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Unlike other demons, Gholl has no interest in bloodshed and actually likes hanging out around humans.
  • Nice Guy: Even though he's the ruler of the demon race, Gholl is a surprisingly chill and friendly guy who tries to rather politely ask Flio to join the Demon Army. Even after Flio refuses, he continues hanging out with him like a friend.
  • Oblivious to Love: He's slow to notice Uliminas' love for him.
  • Sue Donym: When Gholl wants to be incognito, especially while in human lands, he uses Ghozal, which is quite close to his real name.

    Yuigarde

Yuigarde

Younger brother of Gholl. He starts a coup and challenges his brother to a duel for the throne, but Gholl abdicates by his own will. Afterwards, Yuigarde succeeds him as the next Dark One.

  • Bad Boss: He doesn't care about the lives of his soldiers, and his idea for improving morale is to beat it into his subordinates.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Gholl uses a spell that block his malecium, rendering him powerless for a while.
  • Cain and Abel: He betrays his brother and forcibly takes the throne from him, although Gholl doesn't really oppose to letting him have it anyway. Even then, Yuigarde still wants to fight his brother because he won't be satisfied until he can beat him.
  • Fangs Are Evil: He's a demon with a mouth full of fangs.
  • General Failure: His ability to lead an army leaves a lot to be desired. When the human forces changed tactics to use traps and guerrilla tactics which turns out to be highly effective, his solution is to throw more of his soldiers at it to overwhelm the problem with pure numbers, never mind the cost in demon lives.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Unlike his brother who is more of a pacifist, Yuigarde is a Blood Knight who believes violence and bloodthirst are part of a demon's nature.
  • Sketchy Successor: After replacing his brother as the Dark One, he proves to be a far worse leader. When the humans adapt their tactics to set traps and use guerrilla warfare instead of fighting them head on, his response is to throw more demon lives at the problem even when that quite demonstrably isn't working. He is also abusive to his subordinates, and unlike Gholl, has a lot less patience and is far less thoughtful of his actions.

Silent Listeners

    In General

  • Undying Loyalty: They are all loyal to Gholl, and when Gholl conceded his title to his brother and left, they all quit the dark army and follow him in exile.
