Jim Dale
Jim Dale appears in 11 films of the series as a series regular. He was known for portraying attractive men that were adored by many female admirers, and the enemies of many men who hated his clumsiness. Other times, he was the young sympathetic male lead that would mostly take up the romantic parts of the movies, as well as just making brief cameos as bit-part characters, usually plot device-based.
- Affectionate Nickname: Bertram Oliphant "Bo" West. Could either be because he doesn't like that name or other people don't like his name.
- All Men Are Perverts: Dr Nookey is hated by much of the staff due to alleged perverted behaviour around attractive nurses and female patients, but Dr Carver doesn't believe them and thinks that the rumours are down to jealousy. Then the audience sees Nookey lusting after Goldie Lockes and forcing her to kiss him, trying to get her to share his bed for the night when she wants to go home, and mope over having no "skirts" around to ogle at to other doctors, making you wonder whether those sexual harassment allegations have a bit of truth in them.
- Bold Explorer: Christopher Columbus.
- The Cameo: As a father-to-be and a carrier.
- Carpet of Virility:
- Dr Nookey, who's scared out of the shower room in a Modesty Towel.
- Bo, when he's coming out of a trough full of water and being wrapped in a Modesty Towel by Simpson.
- Chick Magnet: Most of his characters manage to make at least one woman flirt with him, whether pretty or not.
- Chivalrous Pervert:
- Albert Potter has waited a year to get amorous with his girlfriend and is very annoyed (and worried) when she disappears.
- Bo West wants to get with CorkTip in her house but is rather hesitant to see her when she claims she's in her bed, and he even turns around when he sees her in her revealing pyjamas.
- Disguised in Drag: Carstairs as a large-breasted prostitute.
- The Door Slams You: Carstairs tries to feed a connected wire from his suit to another area of the restroom, only to have Simpkins open the door on his face.
- Hospital Hottie: Dr Nookey and Dr Kilmore.
- The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: Marshall, through no fault of his own, is sent to Stodge City to chase out the Rumpo Kid, so Rumpo spends most of Marshall's time in the town trying to have him killed.
- Innocent Blue Eyes
- The Klutz:
- Carstairs falls down a manhole.
- Dr Nookey trips and rips off the hospital's main power fuse, sending all hospital electrics ballistic.
- Dr Kilmore trips over two trolleys — one of them knocking Francis off and onto his sore back.
- Landing in Someone's Bathtub: Dr Kilmore trying to rescue a nurse from the roof and slides through a nearby window, landing in a nurse's bathtub while she's relaxing, making her think that he's trying to sexually assault her.
- Mistaken for Badass: Marshall is an ignorant foreigner that's arrived in the US to help fix up the American sewage and rubbish systems, but is believed to be a Peace Marshal by the County Commissioner and is sent to Stodge City where the Rumpo Kid terrorises the streets.
- Mr. Fanservice: A rare mostly-covered Mr Fanservice.
- Nice Guy: He never really plays a villainous character. Even if he did, they were usually this.
- Panicky Expectant Father: In Cabby, he stops Charlie Hawkins' cab to have his wife taken to the hospital. She has several false alarms but eventually gives birth. Then Dale stops Charlie's cab again about three months later...
- Pretty Boy: Practically all of his roles. How he never had a girlfriend baffled many women he interacted with.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: "Carstairs" cannot be his actual name, could it?
- Only Sane Man: Many roles.
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Carstairs' many disguises, as a security guard, a homeless man selling newspapers, a train conductor, an Egyptian local, and a large-breasted prostitute. Simpkins and his gang never see through them.
- Running Gag: Many of his characters not knowing what a eunuch is.
- Shirtless Scene
- Single-Target Sexuality:
- Horsa to his kidnapped crush Gloria, who was enslaved by the Roman Army.
- Dr Nookey to Goldie Lockes, who politely rejects other women's passes at him.
- Bo West to Lady Jane, who he regretfully leaves behind to join the French Foreign Legion.
- Surrounded by Idiots: Carstairs is constantly in danger of this, considering that he's dealing with the likes of the Idiot Hero agent Simpkins and his Ragtag Bunch of Misfits (who didn't recognise him under his disguises) and then through a misunderstanding is knocked out by the team.
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome
- Those Two Guys:
- Took a Level in Badass:
- Horsa punches out guards, strangles one with his wrist chains and knocks Marc Antony unconscious.
- Bo West beating up CorkTip's hired assassins after showing a dorky display of being literal-minded.
- Tuxedo and Martini: Carstairs wore this in the restaurant.
Barbara Windsor
Barbara Windsor appeared in 10 films in the series. All of her roles have been major to the plot, mostly taking the role of being the eye candy to the audience in revealing costumes, and she was either sex-crazy or needed to be liberated from abstinence. She was mostly the affection of Sid James' characters, especially if they were dirty old men that needed to be amused when their wives were boring them, but her characters varied between accepting his passes or trying to avenge him.
- All Women Are Lustful: Harriet was mostly this towards Dick Turpin.
- Catfight: Twice, with the same actress.
- The Danza: Babs.
- Disguised in Drag: In a way with Harriet, who wears masculine bandit clothes when she goes to mug people.
- The Ditz: Daphne is in a way, but shows more common sense than leader Desmond and supposed "hero" Charlie Bind.
- Everyone Loves Blondes: Probably why her characters are getting so much male attention.
- Head-Turning Beauty: Nurse May, making all the men stop and stare, and Charlie Roper's thermometer explode.
- Hormone-Addled Teenager: Babs, who makes out with her supposed boyfriend (or just a random boy who passed the school grounds) and gets excitable when her school goes on a school trip.
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Tiny Sadie to Huge one-night stand Bert.
- Hospital Hottie: Nurse May and Susan Ball. Her male colleagues agree.
- Ms. Fanservice: The moments of her characters in bikinis or short skirts.
- Photographic Memory: Daphne has the ability to take pictures with a slow blink of the eyes, making her a big target for Dr Crow.
- Smurfette Principle: The only recurring female actress who played the prominent female characters, and was usually portrayed as fanservice.
- Wardrobe Malfunction:
Patsy Rowlands
Patsy Rowlands appeared in 9 films in the series, mostly portraying meek secretaries and unappreciated workers. Other roles included sexually-aware women or ones that occasionally stand up for themselves.
- The Cameo: Most of her roles were this.
- Dogged Nice Girl: Mostly towards Kenneth Williams.
- Last-Name Basis: Miss Banks, Miss Fosdick, Miss Dempsey, Miss Dobbs and Mrs Giles.
- The Quiet One
- Single-Target Sexuality: Mostly to Kenneth Williams' characters, secretly at war with Hattie Jacques' characters.
Jack Douglas
Jack Douglas appeared in 8 films. He mostly made cameos in the movies with at least a few lines or one/two scenes, until he was one of the leading men in Dick, which was his only starring role in the series.
- Accidental Pervert: After discovering that the villain has a birthmark on his intimate parts, Jock Strapp follows men into the restroom and inspects their genitalia as they urinate. He could've been unnoticed if he didn't directly stand over them with a magnifying glass.
- The Big Guy: At 6'4".
- Butt-Monkey
- Gentle Giant: But no way as tall as Bernard Bresslaw.
- Hero Antagonist: Jock Strapp.
- Hollywood Tourette's: Averted. Many of his characters have the actual kind of Tourettes with mostly the violent twitching.
- The Klutz: Jock Strapp tripping over things, falling over the place and crashing into ladders.
- Landing in Someone's Bathtub: Jock trips on soap and lands on Madame Desiree in her tin bath.
- Oop North
- Only Sane Man: Mostly as Jock Strapp to CPT Fancey.
- Those Two Guys: Jock Strapp and CPT Fancey.
- Trademark Clothing: His characters are most likely to wear a flat cap and denim dungarees in their appearances.
Terry Scott
Terry Scott appeared in seven films in the series, varying between a variety of characters from insane to meek and bumbling. He first appeared as a cameo, before becoming a part of major roles in many films that turned out very, very popular, despite not appearing in the series much.
- All Men Are Perverts:
- Dr Prodd, who sleeps around with female patients and tries to rape the disguised Cyril Carter.
- Peter Potter isn't this, but he shows signs of annoyance when Charlie Muggins implies that he and his wife would like to have some alone-time, and Harriet doesn't know what he means.
- Ass Shove: Cardinal Wolsey implies that he smuggles things out for prisoners by this way. It's not the only thing that Terry Scott does with his ass (see Shot in the Ass below.)
- Berserk Button: Cardinal Wolsey became very aggressive when Cromwell calls him fat.
- Bumbling Sidekick: As Cardinal Wolsey, who doesn't want to anger the Roman Catholic Church because of Henry VIII's antics.
- The Cameo: His debut appearance of SGT O'Brien.
- The Danza: Terence Philpot.
- Deadpan Snarker
- Dirty Old Monk: Cardinal Wolsey's not a monk, though. He lusts after attractive women, no matter how much he tries to deny himself, and gooses a maid.
- Drill Sergeant Nasty: As S.MJR MacNutt in the most memorable fashion.
- Henpecked Husband: Peter Potter.
- Hypocrite: S.MJR MacNutt spends a lot of time yelling at PVT Widdle for wearing underwear but is caught wearing them in the Khasi's palace when Sir Sidney is trying to convince the Indian Royal Family that wearing underwear under kilts was a rather rare occurrence in the British Army.
- Nature Hero: As Ugh, complete with Loincloth.
- No Indoor Voice: S.MJR MacNutt, who can be heard yelling at his soldiers when he's not on screen.
- Officer Jerkass: S.MJR MacNutt to PVT Widdle, implying that he relishes yelling at him and telling him what to do. He also points out that the only reason he brought Widdle on the hunt for the underpants in the streets of India was because that Widdle could be blamed for the plan going wrong if the party were caught, even if he did nothing wrong.
- Oireland: SGT O'Brien and S.MJR MacNutt.
- The Rival: SGT O'Brien to SGT Grimshaw, who's racing to have the best platoon in the National Service base.
- Shot in the Ass: A running gag.
- Peter Potter gets it twice by an innkeeper over a misunderstanding and has his wife pull them out in their tent with long tools. *
- Dr Prodd is injected in the ass by Cyril in drag and is unconscious for most of the film.
- Terence sits on sharp objects at Jenny's house.
Leslie Phillips
Leslie Phillips appeared in four films in the series. You could argue that he was in main roles, but he was mostly a member of some group of muggles that met up in a location of the movie's choice.
- Catchphrase: "Ding dong!" note
- The Cameo: As King Ferdinand.
- Deadpan Snarker: Some of his roles.
- Nice Guy: All of his roles.
- Out of Focus: He's somehow one of the leads, even though he sometimes makes an appearance with only a couple of lines.
- Pretty Boy: Often portrayed the attractive love interest.
- You Might Remember Me from...: Considering how there's a 32-year gap between his third and fourth appearance in the series, if you were a regular Carry On film buff from since the beginning, it might give you this sort of feel when you see him again as the King of Spain.
- Replacement Goldfish: Tom Potter.
As of 2022, the only actor that is still alive is Jim Dale.
