Main Characters

    Astler Leidt
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_15_182540.png
The male protagonist. Astler is the young but terrifyingly powerful Admiral of the Coelcaitus army. He is sent to dispatch Shinsa, but learns of her humanity, and the plot ensues.
  • The Dreaded: The sheer abnormality and scale of his Cael powers can induce this type of reaction. Shinsa and her brother were classified as a category-5 isle threatening threat on their own. Astler beat each of them single handedly. Many outright refer to him as a monster.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Astler is generally a nice fellow, but threaten Shinsa or Icarus and expect to be impaled under isle-sized constructs of Cael.
  • Master of All: He shines in the sheer mass of Cael he's able to manipulate at once, but he's pretty exceptional in other areas of Cael control as well. His range allows him to manipulate cael from miles away, and his control, possibly his weakest area, is still very impressive.
  • No Hero to His Valet: With Shinsa. His power and rank tends to make others wary and cautious around him, whereas Shinsa sees him for the emotionally closed off and awkward teen that he is, and manages to get him out of his shell.
  • Power Limiter: His 8-shards halo serves not to focus his power but limit it, as it turns out its so massive he can't control it and it surges out of him when the Halo is turned off.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Astler has difficulties in situations where he isn't expected to merely fight or lead. Except when Shinsa is involved.
  • The Stoic: Rather unemotive at most times. Rarely shows outward affection or surprise. Except when it comes to Shinsa.

    Shinsa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_15_134102.png
The main heroine. Shinsa is an archdemon who has somehow retained her human intelligence, becoming terrifyingly strong through application of her honed warrior skills and powerful demonic muscle. Astler spares her, unwilling to kill a sentient being just for being cursed, and for that and other reasons she decides to join the kingdom of Coelcaitus, until recently her sworn enemies.
  • Action Girl: The definitive one of the story. Shinsa is quick to act, confident, and powerful enough to threaten an entire kingdom.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Had this dynamic for most of her life. As a princess candidate of Shin-An, she was one of the few without a living mother to support her, leaving her to fend for herself against the plots and schemes of the palace. Once she joins the Coelcaitus army and her demonic nature is revealed, most of the Coelcaitans who interact with her do so with disdain or fear, but her close friends stick by her side, but the process still showed how manipulative she can be.
  • Almighty Janitor: Not as Shin-An's princess, but as a new recruit in the Northern Squardon. She's powerful enough to defeat the rest of the squad combined, but has little strategic talent and is also a demon, so she's merely one member under Eugene's command.
  • The Dreaded: Not to her current friends, but in her past as the Demon of Shin-An she was considered this. No one could really stop her and thus Shin-An's conquests continued unimpeded until her betrayal.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Much like Astler. Shinsa prefers to avoid harming the innocent, but is quick to violence and even murder if her friends are threatened, in particularly Astler. She constantly shows mercy, but only to those who don't betray her; traitors get a brutal execution.
  • The Paragon Always Rebels: Was the leading princess candidate to inherit the throne amongst the emperor's offsprings. But life as Shin-An royalty was cruel. In particular, the revelation that her brother, and only friend, was force-fed corruption until he turned into a mindless thrall, drove her to slaughter the entire palace, especially her father.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Shinsa is a mixed example. She's a prodigy at swordfighting and a master tactician, but has zero affinity towards Cael manipulation and the attention span of a bird. Luckily, she's a powerful demon, so her skillset is perfectly applied to her enhanced physical prowess, to the point that only Admiral-class Cael users like Astler can stop her.

Supporting Cast

    Ryuung
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_15_182828.png
A Blank, incapable of manipulating Cael, that was still sponsored by Icarus to join the army that usually only allows talented Cael users. Has a mysterious past and desires revenge, which he hopes Icarus can help him achieve.
  • Badass Normal: The definitive example in the series. Despite not being able to manipulate Cael and not being a superpowered demon like Shinsa, Ryuung can defeat members of the royal families through his fighting skills, intelligence, and ruthless practicality.
  • Deal with the Devil: His deal with Icarus is portrayed as such. She promised freedom and revenge, only to burden him with secrets that could topple empires.
  • Had to Be Sharp: Ryuung had the misfortune of being sold to a gladiator ring. He was the one who survived long enough to become its champion, which eventually got him out.
  • Revenge: His main motivation at the start of the story, focused on repaying the people responsible for his life as a slave.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: After Lanning forces him to spare the slaver leader, Ryuung is considerably bitter. The fact that an evil slaver who repeatedly tortured his product got away with life imprisonment because his prepubescent daughter was 'too important' to piss off, and that his (former) friend demanded this above all else, got under his skin.

    Euclass de la Solgloire
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_08_212635.png
Captain Eugene's youngest brother, hard at work at living up to his famous family's reputation.
  • Black Sheep: Due to his low cael affinity and bright eyes, he's considered a failure of a son, unlike his very high ranked brother and sister. His parents and especially his father are very open about their toxic disappointment of him.
  • Readings Are Off the Scale: Most certified angels are able to use one Halo shard to boost their ability. Skilled ones can handle two. Astler, the strongest cael user shown thus far, can use a whooping eight. Euclass can use twelve. Interestingly, this doesn't actually make him the strongest per se, as his base abilities aren't too impressive. But it does mean he can massively amplify them, much more than most.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His Cael capacity is very low, only able to make small constructs, but his fine control of them is extremely impressive. His special talent is a theoretically unlimited ability to equip shards, which makes him capable of handling augmentation loads meant for admirals.

    Lanning
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_15_183154.png
One of the trainees recruited during Shinsa's inflitration.
  • Ace Pilot: Trained and worked as a pilot for her family buisiness for years. Became even better due to field experience as a soldier. The best at her job amongst the cast.
  • Action Girl: Doesn't hesitate to fight, and becomes stronger and stronger with each passing arc.
  • Blindfolded Vision: After her eyes are ripped out, lanning is able to use her Cael literacy to sense her surroundings much better than she ever could with sight.
  • Nice Girl: Possibly the nicest in the series. Lanning truly wants what's best for everyone, not only her immediate friends group but the downtrodden citizens of the less glamorous regions in the kingdom.
  • Shrinking Violet: Has a bit of this attitude at the start, but she grows out it as her skill, confidence and determination to change things grow.
  • Weak, but Skilled: The least combat oriented of the main cast. That said, her navigating skill are exceptional, and she later learns both flight and moving isle-sized landmasses, which only Captain Ludwig is capable of doing.

Coelcaitus Kingdom

Coelcaitus Rulling Class

    Archangel Seraphina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_07_15_182332.png
The Leader of Coelcaitus, and Astler calls her his mother.

  • Child Soldier: Used to be part of some program that trained Cael capable children. And she grew strong enough to destroy cities.
  • The Conspiracy: Hides a lot of the unsavory history of Coelcaitus.
  • Fatal Flaw: She's a Slave to PR. As compassionate as she is, she puts her own image above the wellbeing of others, and is deeply ashamed of her past, leading to multiple unnecessary coverups.
  • Puppet Queen: Doesn't seem too interested in the detailed affairs of the kingdoms. This lets her supposed subordinates, especially Icarus, run circles around her and push whatever agenda they wish. this hints at Coelcaitus's rise from the destruction of the old, modern world, and the lower areas infestation by demons. If Seraphina cared too much about the lower areas, the secrets might have been revealed.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: video footage shows her as a child, creating dozens if not hundreds of Cael constructs, each the size of buildings, to absolutely demolish Manhattan in a matter of minutes.

    Icarus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_08_205438.png
The richest woman in Coelcaitus and also the leading brain behind most scientific endeavors regarding Cael and Demons.
  • Mad Scientist: It's pretty clear her scientific curiousity is one of her key motivators from the start, but we learn just how much over time.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Often and frequently. She is very talented in reading people and finding the pressure points that will make them move according to her desires. Case in point, promising Ryung revenge in order to aquire his unique skillset and loyalty, and making Eugene fight her for real in the tournament by promising to release Ryung from that debt if Eugene wins. she knew she is bound to win, and the real goal was to use Eugene to showcase her talents to Euclass, who was watching, so he will want to study under her. It didn't work, because Euclass was unwilling to join anyone who would hurt his brother like that.
  • Glass Cannon: In terms of Cael powers. She's capable of complete control of an enemy's cael constructs, even someone with top notch control such as Eugene. She is also the only character thus far capable of producing Cael Lighting. And yet for some reason, using her powers causes her to bleed and she can't keep it up for very long.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Doesn't portray herself as particularly adept in Cael manipulation. and yet her stat charts released by the author are somehow all in 10/10 beside affinity, which bizzarely enough is 0. This means she has Cael ability surpassing even Astler's, but somehow reached it with zero affinity.
  • The Woman Behind The Woman: Looks more and more to be the leading authority within Coelcaitus. A combination of her enormous funds, keen social intellect, direct influence on the supposed real leader, Archangel Seraphina, and her willingness to get her hand dirty all contribute to the kingdom moving according to her will.
  • Moral Sociopathy: Despite her general Lack of Empathy, she takes time to study ethics and tries to improve society. Best summarized by her banter against a slaver:
Lucas: Someone like you would never understand what it's like to love your child so much you'd sacrifice the whole world for them.
    Commander Bach
One of the highest ranking officers in the Coelcaitus army. An older looking man, treated with respect due to his rank more then his achievements or skill.

  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: While not outright ignored, he's rarely treated as a source of useful authority and mostly as an obstacle to placate.
  • Child Soldiers: Was part of the same program that trained Seraphina, Tartini and other notable cael users. His rank was 13 at the time, lower then Ludwig who he outranks.

Former Members

    Liszt
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_08_210354.png
The former Admiral before Astler Leidt. Now leaving in solitude in her own flying Cael fortress.

Coelcaitus Armada

The Captains and squardons

Northern Squardon

Eugene's squardon. Beside Eugene himself, the squad is composed of talented but fresh new recruits, as the previous members were all killed by Shizen. Beside Astler who's already an Admiral, all of the main cast ends up joining this squad, but this folder deals with those who were already in it.

    In General
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Pretty much the squad motto. All the members are uniquely skilled in a certain field of Cael manipulation (or just plain good fighters like Ryuung), but are also rejected in one way or another from the typical Cael society.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Pairing with the above, what kept such adept Cael users from being model citizens range from sad stories to outright tragic and dark.

    Eugene de la Solgloire
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_09_130352.png
The captain of the northern squad and Euclass and Eulifer's elder brother. Eugene's former team was killed by Shinsa's demonized brother, Shinzen.
  • Beneath the Mask: Pretends to be the ideal soldier and captain, and with much success due to his talent and intelligence. But beneath it all, he hides the disdain for the role his parents planned for him, his dislike of his superiors, and his attraction and tryst with Ryuung.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Befitting his cold intellect, he is an award winning player from a young age, consistently defeating the tactically minded Ryuung despite the latter's perfect memory.
  • Jack of All Trades: Particularly adept at fine Cael control, and creating complex constructs, but rather skilled at every other area of Cael manipulation.

    Sohi Ihsrav
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_11_30_152245.png
A talented user of Cael constructs, Sohi hails from the prestigious Ishrav family. However, her family hates her and resents her talent due to her mother's refusal to accept social norms.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Shines with enthusiasm when Shinsa mentions the need to buy dresses. This shows her care towards outward appearance, but also that it doesn't stop her from socializing with an outcast, even dangerous person like Shinsa.
  • Runaway Bride: Not her, but her mother. Abandoning an Arranged Marriage to a high class but old noble in favor of a pretty-looking but socially unconnected guy. This led to her mother being ostracized, as well as Sohi herself, being the result of that elopement.

    Jasper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_11_30_153254.png
A rare user of Cael fire, hailling from meager background despite his talent.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Whenever Lanning is concerned, at least. He doesn't stop pining for her, to her chagrin.

    Eisner Kraus

    Huey Kraus

Eastern Squardon

    Captain Ludwig
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_09_130448.png
Captain of the Eastern Division. A master of cael literacy, better than even Lanning.

Southern Squardon

    Killian Wells
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_08_211400_2.png
Captain of the Southern Division
  • Super-Strength: A master of cael enhancement, making him physically stronger than most demons.

Western Squardon

    Claudia Castillo
Captain of the Western Division.

Solgloire Family

Solgoire Family in general

  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The mother and father are obsessed with social status, constantly trying to match their offsprings with a suitably dark-blue eyed partner to create powerful offsprings. Their children's desires matter not one bit. Euclass, having been born with rather bright eyes and seemingly low Cael ability, has it the worst off, and is constantly berated and demeaned.
    de la Solgloire Patriarch
    de la Solgloire Matriarch
    Eulifer de la Solgloire
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_08_210016.png
Euclass's elder sister and Eugene's younger. Serves as a military secretary of sorts to Astler.—-
  • Arranged Marriage: What her parents hope will happen between her and Astler, in hopes of promising children to continue the Solgloire reputation. It's unclear as of yet if she shares their desire to gurantee the family's reputation or merely does it out of obedience.
  • Unknown Rival: Had to outright tell Shinsa they're competing for Astler's affections, and Shinsa still didn't get it. It doesn't seem she ever tried to really connect with him, whereas Shinsa does it naturally, so the competition seems to already be decided.

Shin-An

    Emperor of Shin-An
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_08_09_130409.png
The late emperor of the Shin-An empire. Had his offsprings fight in a brutal succession war to see who deserves to inherit his throne. Shinsa emerged victorious.
  • Abusive Parents: Doesn't get much worse then forcing your kids and their mothers to fight each other to the death. He managed to make it worse. When Shinzen proved to be the strongest heir despite being an angel and promoting strength through peace, the Emperor's reaction was to force-feed Shinzen the Nectar of the Gods until he lost his mind, and then use him as a disposable battle thrall while brazenly lying to his beloved sister's face about his 'sacrifice'.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: The Emperor wanted to preserve Social Darwinism in the empire, even if it meant hypocritically killing his strongest heir for daring to question the status quo. Shinsa proves how unviable Social Darwinism is by taking revenge and single-handedly slaughtering the government, destroying Shin-An and turning it into a province of the now-stronger Coelcaitus.
    Shinzen

CLICK for Shizen's appearance in seasson 2

CLICK for Shizen's appearance as a demon

Shinsa's half brother, who also drank the Nectar of the Gods and became a powerful demon, but unlike Shinsa did not retain his human intelligence. Icarus experimented on him for a year to cure the feral insanity, with mixed results.

Hades

    Hades as a Whole
A terrorist organisation bent on destroying the current Coelcaitus regime. They're aware of the dark secrets behind the formation of Coelcaitus and seek to bring them to light to further topple the kingdom.

  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: While all inside Hades seek Coelcaitus's fall, their reasons differ. Some do it out of disgust at Coelcaitus's treatments of it's lower, less cael-capable castes. Some do it out of desire for mayhem. Still others seem to want vengeance at the specific individuals ruilling Coelcaitus.
  • Awful Truth: One of their main tactics of sowing discord is simply revealing the ugly truths behind Coelcaitus's formation. To name a few, The current rulling class were trained cael-using Child Soldiers who destroyed some version of humanity very similar to ours that lived before them and could not use Cael. Beyond that, demons are formed by the burning of Cael into Nux, a material that has its own will.

    Tartini
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_11_28_003124.png
The leader of Hades. An expert in the art of burning cael and a massively powerful cael fighter.

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: May not be the only reason he's leader, but it couldn't have hurt. He managed to stalement Seraphina, Coelcaitus's leader who demonstrated city-destructive capabilities at the least
  • Child Soldier: Used to be part of some program that trained him, Seraphina, Ludwig, Bach, Amadeus and potentially more relevant characters into the extremely powerful Cael user he became.
  • The Dreaded: Inspires fear in Ludwig and Lanning. Ludwig personally knows his prowess and warns no one beside Seraphina should dare to get close. Lanning senses the level of his Cael manipulation and is awed speechless. Seraphina is also wary of him, but more due to his knowledge and intentions than fear of his power.
  • Playing with Fire: One of the strongest cael users shown thus far, and mostly seen using fire attacks. Notably could stalemate Seraphina, who specializes in massive amounts of large constructs that should have made for a good defense.

    Amadeus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_11_28_162019.png
Tartini's male lover, who knows him for a very long time. He is also an exceptionally dangerous Cael user, capable of making captain-class fighters look like pushovers.

  • Making a Splash: His specialty. He manipulates Cael into liquid form, and in great volume, giving him constant protection against blunt objects and making wind-like attacks useless.
  • Older Than They Look: At least 200 years old.
  • Child Soldiers: Used to be one, alongside Tartini and several of the current Coelcaitus regime's ruling class.

    Styx
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_11_28_002020.png
An officer of Hades. Demonstrating no Cael powers, Styx instead employs cunning, planning and information gathering to get ahead of the Coelcaitus forces, and usually with effective results.

  • The Sneaky Guy: The definitive one in the story thus far. Whereas Ryung also lacks Cael or demonic powers but employs combat know-how to survive, Styx makes sure the situations s/he finds themselves in are already in their favor, or employs technology which will allow them to keep the upper hand. They can fight, but they make it so they rarely have to.
  • Badass Normal: No Cael powers. Still contends and often gains victory against the best Coelcaitus has to offer, by combination of preperation and physical prowess.
