Protagonists
Kelvin
A young man that was accidentally killed by a god, he got a chance at being reincarnated in another world as a compensation. Deciding to sacrifice his memories of his life to become stronger, he awakens without any knowledge of his life and only Melfina's voice as a partner. Having become a summoner, he keeps his true power hidden to avoid attracting too much attention.
- Ambidextrous Sprite: He can't seem to decide which hand to hold his staff in. Episode 7 in particular has it rapidly jump from one hand to the other between camera angle changes.
- Amnesiac Hero: Kelvin woke up at the beginning of the series with no memories except for maybe his name and general information about his world. He traded all his memories for the skills he gained.
- The Blacksmith: He eventually learns blacksmithing so he can make weapons and armor for his party.
- Blood Knight: He loves fighting powerful opponents, to the point that he'll make fights harder by deliberately handicapping himself, such as fighting with melee attacks despite his magic being more suited for ranged attacks. He also deliberately set up the hero party to think he's a bandit leader (in reality he'd wiped out the bandits before they arrived) because the only way they'd go at him with full strength is if they thought he was a villain.
- Chick Magnet: He's got Efil, Sera, Ange, and even Melfina (who's a god) crawling all over him wanting a piece of him.
- Elemental Powers: Green Magic consists of this.
- Blow You Away: One of his spells fires a blade of cutting wind, while another can increase the air pressure to simulate Gravity Master.
- Dishing Out Dirt: One spell rises the ground to create a wall, and another can create a rift.
- I Am Not Left-Handed: Kelvin keeps his summoner power a secret, preferring to present himself as an earth mage, as summoners, especially strong ones, are so rare that mere knowledge of his existence would make kings and nobles attempt to force him into their service.
- The Minion Master: Kelvin has the power of a summoner. Which can form pacts with monsters and summon them as well as boost their stats.
- Even without taking summoning into account, Kelvin can use Green Magic to create golems.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Upon reaching S-Rank, Kelvin gains the title of Grim Reaper, a reference to his unique spell Boreas Death Scythe.
- Protagonist Without a Past: Kelvin woke up in a different world in the middle of nowhere with no memories and only a voice to tell him what happened.
- Sinister Scythe: His S-Rank Spell, Boreas Death Scythe turns his staff into this. It also becomes responsible for his S-Rank nickname, the Grim Reaper.
- Trickster Mentor: He briefly serves as this for the Deramis Heroes, with his first lesson being a Curb-Stomp Battle to prove to them just how far behind him they are (as well as scratch his itch for a fight).
Efil
A half-elf girl who was captured and enslaved outside her lands. After Kelvin meets her and breaks a curse inflicted on her, she joins his party.
- Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: The anime cuts their sexual relationship, seemingly out of concern for the ethical implications of the Hero's Slave Harem trope: Kelvin refuses her sexual advances and makes sure to put her in her own, separate bedroom when he buys a house, and appears to view her as more of an adopted daughter.
- Blessed with Suck: Her curse prevents her from being touched. Considering how beautiful she is, it does protect her from less-than-savory would-be slavers and those who only see her as a sexual object.
- Curse: She's under a curse that causes anyone that touches her to burst into flames.
- Cursed with Awesome: While her curse prevents her from being touched, it also protects her from less-than-savory would-be slavers and bastardly lecherous individuals seeking "comfort" from buying her.
- The Fashionista: Learns Sewing to make clothes for herself and Kelvin's party.
- Happiness in Slavery: After Kelvin breaks her curse, she happily accepts him as her master.
- Luminescent Blush: When Kelvin compliments her.
- Mage Marksman: She combines bow and magic to unleash special arrows.
- Meido: Wears this following her release.
- Nightmare Face: Whenever she sees Kelvin being tempted by another woman, she gives him one of these to keep him in line. In the anime, it is so scary, that the camera has to view her from the back whenever she makes it, and all we see is Kelvin's panicked expression before the angle changes to show her calmly smiling again.
- Playing with Fire: Specializing in Red Magic, which involves this element.
- Rescue Romance: After being cured of her curse by him, Efil devotes herself to Kelvin to the point of going to his bed and making love. This is Adapted Out of the anime, where he directly refuses her advances and appears to view her as more of an adopted daughter.
- Undying Loyalty: To Kelvin as he rescued her from slavery and broke her curse, now she will do anything he says and even wants to continually make love to him.
Clotho
A slime monster. The first monster Kelvin fought with, and which he eventually managed to make a pact with, making it his first summon.
- Cannibalism Superpower: It grows by eating other monsters.
- Cute Slime Mook: It's normally this. Unless it transforms into a Glutton Slime.
- One-Word Vocabulary: The only sound it can make is a single sound effect, but all the other party members can understand it perfectly well anyway.
- Shoulder Pet: It likes to split off a piece of itself so it will ride on Efil's shoulder. This allows her to hear Melfina.
- Stomach of Holding: Kelvin uses Clotho's stomach to carry various equipment and items.
Gerard
An undead knight who lives in a decrepit castle. Kelvin meets him as part of a quest, and makes a pact with him so he'll become his summon.
- Dark Is Not Evil: He may be an undead knight with imposing dark armor, but he's jovial and chivalrous.
- Defeat Means Friendship: He accepts a pact with Kelvin after being defeated in a fight.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Ever since he became an undead knight, people have kept coming trying to kill him. Kelvin coming and talking with him impresses him.
- The Lost Lenore: His wife Betty and daughter Connie.
- Revenant Zombie: Raised from the death to avenge his fallen homeland.
- Shipper on Deck: Suggests Kelvin to take up the guild's receptionist as a member of his harem.
- Unfinished Business: He seeks revenge on the Elf Empire of Lizea, as they caused the death of every living being within Alcarl, his homeland, just because the king didn't cede to their blackmail.
Sera
The daughter of the previous Demon King. Kelvin and his party find her chained up in a dungeon, captured by her former assistant. After Kelvin frees her, she joins his party.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being the daughter of a demon lord, she has no problem joining the human protagonist.
- Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Episode 6 of the anime has her send a bandit flying with one punch and remarking that she thought she was holding back.
- Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Really enjoys her alcohol when the group is celebrating.
- Horned Humanoid: Sports these, but she wears a ribbon accessory to hide them.
- Kung-Fu Wizard: Combines Black Magic and pugilism as an Arcane Pugilist.
Melfina
The Goddess that reincarnated Kelvin in a different world. At Kelvin's request, she joins him in his travels as a holiday from her normal job.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Does not like it when other girls get too close to Kelvin.
- The Faceless: Due to Kelvin being unable to summon her with his current power level, neither he nor the viewer actually get to see what she looks like for most of the first anime season. Even in her one appearance in episode one all you see is a silhouette. Same for her profile shown in the same episode. The anime goes so far as to render her faceless in the opening credits until she creates a weaker artificial body that he can summon.
- God in Human Form: While Melfina is still far too powerful for Kelvin to fully summon, she's able to craft an avatar into which she can pour her identity and a semblance of her power, allowing Kelvin to finally summon that instead in episode 8.
- Hot Goddess: Kelvin certainly thought so. One of Kelvin's initial objectives was to become powerful enough to summon her so they can meet face to face again.
- Love at First Sight: Apparently pre-reincarnation Kelvin took one look at her and fell head over heels, to the point he all but begged her to come with him to the new world. It's implied the feeling is reciprocated.
- Mayfly–December Romance: An immortal Goddess who's probably centuries older than Kelvin at least.
- Team Mom: She takes on this role in Kelvin's household after acquiring a physical body, becoming Kelvin's domestic partner and helping raise Rion and Efil with him.
Rion
- Adaptational Modesty: Her combat outfit in the novel illustrations and manga exposes her midriff while the anime replaces this with a black skintight top.
- Came Back Strong: Was frail and sickly in her old life, while the reincarnation summoning seems to have removed this handicap.
- Delicate and Sickly: Was this in her previous life, having spent her life until her final moments confined to a hospital bed.
- Dual Wielding: As a hero, she possesses the dual wielding skill.
- Resurrected for a Job: She died back in her original world, and thus she was summoned as a hero by Kelvin.
Secondary Characters
Ange
The Guild worker Kelvin meets when he arrives to Param's Adventurer's Guild. She becomes his point of contact when it comes to finding new jobs or getting rewards.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Her true identity is a reincarnated slave girl who remembers her past life and the abuse she suffered. In exchange for a chance at revenge against her former abusers, she serves as the Assassin of the Pillers.
- Shipper on Deck: She ships Kelvin and Elfi.
- Sweet Tooth: When a new sweets shop opens, she asks Elfi and Kelvin if they want to go with her.
Claire
The owner of the inn where Kelvin stays in during his first few months in Parth.
- Anger Born of Worry: When she meets Elfi, she becomes angry with Kelvin - because Elfi's still wearing rags and needs a bath.
- Stronger Than They Look: She’s an ordinary woman, but is easily able to cart Efil, an adult woman, under one arm like a sack of potatoes.
- Supreme Chef: Everything she makes is delicious.
Leo
Parth's Guildmaster, he's possibly the strongest adventurer in the city. After Kelvin stops Cashiel, he offers the former a chance to grow stronger while protecting his great secret.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: He offers Kelvin to boost his rank in exchange of helping keep his true power a secret and him helping stop monster attacks within the region - all things Kelvin would have normally done.
- Secret-Keeper: He's the only person outside of Kelvin's party to know he's a summoner.
- Shame If Something Happened: he does a version of this. After commenting to Kelvin about someone attacking a noble, he states that this is going to be a headache for him. He then quickly mentions that there's a dungeon he would like him to check out. The conversation is pretty much telling Kelvin that if he doesn't accept this Mission he will make sure that he has to deal with the consequences of attacking a noble.
Hero's Party
- Fake Ultimate Hero: They're geuinely hero people who want to stop the Demon Lord and bring peace to the world... problem is that they aren't anywhere near strong enough to handle such a task. Part of the reason Kelvin picks a fight with them, aside from personal enjoyment, is to get them to start grinding.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Toya = Phlegmatic, Setsuna = Choleric, Nana = Sanguine, Miyabe = Melancholic.
- Heroes of Another Story: Literally. They are the heroes summoned by Melfina for the purpose of stopping the current Demon Lord.
- Let's You and Him Fight: Invoked by Kelvin, who tricks them into thinking he's the leader of the Black Winds in order to get them to fight him seriously.
- Trapped in Another World: By being summoned into it and there's no way out.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: Is the most determined to help others of the party.
- Dual Wielding: As a Hero, Toya has the Dual Wielding Skill.
- Good Is Dumb: He rushes headfirst into unknown situations, acts without thinking, takes everything at face-value and gives his opponents every advantage because he thinks that doing otherwise would make him a coward. He also fails to remember that he is not the only hero in the party.
- Light Is Good: Possesses the Light Fairy's Grace Skill and is a heroic individual.
- Small Steps Hero: The reason why his party is nowhere near strong enough is because he insists on them helping out with every little thing rather than train themselves to become strong enough to fight tougher enemies.
- Absurdly Sharp Blade: Her Zantetsuken Skill allows her to cut through any obstacle.
- Blow You Away: Possesses the Wind Fairy's Grace Skill, which boosts her agility.
- Double Jump: Her Heaven's Walk skill.
- Only Sane Man: She is the most rational, forward-thinking, cautious and sensible member of the party.
- Dragon Tamer: Possesses a Beast Taming Skill and carries a Shoulder-Sized Dragon she named
- Making a Splash: Possesses the Water Fairy's Grace Skill and uses Blue Magic.
- A-Cup Angst: Implied, as she started at Nana's boobs in episode 8 with a mix of envy and despair.
- Black Magic: Uses it to among other things create giant zombies.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Possesses the Dark Fairy's Grace Skill and uses Black Magic, but she's still a hero.
- Squishy Wizard: Most of her stats are about 200, which is fairly average for this world and pretty weak for a hero. However, her Magic and MP stats are about 800, making her the strongest mage in the party.
