Characters / Batman: Restless Dreams

Go To

Characters in the fanfic series Batman: Restless Dreams. This page will primarily focus on original characters, since the canon Batman characters will mostly be the same as they were in B:TAS. See Characters.Batman The Animated Series for tropes about them.

Dr. Davetta Blanc

A mysterious and standoffish caretaker at Arkham Asylum. Batman finds her shifty but doesn't yet have any proof that she's up to something.

  • Albinos Are Freaks: Defied. Although not much is known about her, Dr. Blanc seems like a shifty person. She has white hair despite not seeming elderly. The writer mentioned in the notes for Chapter 1 that he doesn't mean for her to be albino, because he doesn't like the stereotype that albino people are scary. The writer only gave her white hair to match the White and Red and Eerie All Over color scheme of her outfit. The writer notes that he specifically gave her dark eyes because albino people tend to have pale-colored eyes. The fic doesn't mention her skin tone, though it doesn't mention anyone's skin tone either.
  • Ambiguously Evil: She seems rather creepy and dubious, but it's too early in the story to tell if she's really evil.
  • Vague Age: Batman finds it hard to identify Dr. Blanc's age. She has white hair, but her face doesn't seem very wrinkled, and her voice doesn't sound too aged either. Most of her face is hidden by a medical mask.
  • White and Red and Eerie All Over: Implied. Dr. Blanc has white hair and wears a white-and-red coat. Her behavior seems shifty, but there is no concrete evidence that she's sinister yet.

Alptraum

The main antagonist, a giant, supernatural entity who controls a world of nightmares and likes to trap people in it.

  • Big Bad: He is responsible for trapping some of Gotham's citizens in a neverending sleep.
  • Bilingual Bonus: His name is German for "Nightmare." Batman notes this in Chapter 1.
  • Casting Gag: Invoked since this is a fanfic with no budget for actors. In the notes for Chapter 1, the writer says that he imagines Alptraum having the voice of Willem Dafoe. Dafoe is famous for playing another pointy-eared supervillain.
  • Evil Laugh: He does a sinister laugh when he makes his first appearance in Chapter 1.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: He is described as having a raspy, gravelly voice.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: When he makes his debut in Chapter 1, he's high up in the sky and shrouded in dark clouds, making it impossible to discern much of his features. The only body part he reveals is a single, skeletal arm.
  • Jackass Genie: While he's not an actual djinn, he states that he's able to trap people in his nightmare world when they wish that their lives were different.
Alptraum: For most people, they don’t enter my realm until they make a wish at night that they lived a different life, and then go to sleep. That’s how I got the fifty who wound up in the hospital. They’ve all got their own little problems. [...] Now, they’re in my arena, fighting and running from every horrific monster I can dream up! That’s certainly a change of pace, isn’t it?
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He's a giant, supernatural monster with four arms.
  • Nightmare Weaver: He describes himself as the king of nightmares. He created a nightmare realm, and it's implied that he frequently creates nightmarish monsters.
  • Pointed Ears: His silhouette is described as having long, pointy ears.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He's the main antagonist, and he is described as having three glowing red eyes.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He is described as speaking in a very low, quiet voice.
