The Barbapapa family
The Barbapapa family are a group of colorful Blob Monsters with unique personalities who can shapeshift into anything they want at will.
- Alliterative Family: Every family member's name starts with "Barba".
- Bizarre Alien Reproduction: In the second book, it's shown that they lay eggs and plant them on the ground.

- Color-Coded Characters: As all of the Barbapapas and Barbamamas have similar shapes, aside from a few other features that help them stand out, the characters are color-coded so you can easily tell who's who.

- Quirky Household: Basically describes the Barbapapa family perfectly; a group of multi-colored blob monsters who can voluntarily shapeshift into anything they want to, all with their own quirky personalities.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: While it's still fairly easy to tell who is male and who is female due to the shapes of their bodies being different, the Barbamamas still wear flowers on their heads, and Barbabelle is even wearing a pearl necklace. However, they all do have eyelashes.

Barbapapa is the father of the Barbapapas. He was born in Frank and Cindy's garden. He is very nice and is always willing to help anyone he can.
- Born as an Adult: Barbapapa has no child form, since he already was an adult when coming out of the earth in the garden.
- Cheery Pink: Barbapapa is pink, and he is very cheerful and kind.
- Gentle Giant: Barbapapa is much larger than human beings and most animals but is kind to them.
- The Trickster: In the original series, Barbapapa usually plays this role when it comes to bad environmental harmers who want to kill innocent animals and the like.
Barbamama is the mother of the Barbapapas. She likes to cook for her seven children, and she loves to take care of her house and garden.
- Action Girl: The official site states that Barbamama "does not fear action".
- Born as an Adult: Just like Barbapapa.
- Hartman Hips: She has a curvy figure.
Barbabravo (Barbidur) is a very strong sports fan who loves to win. He also likes to lead and loves to eat. He also tends to hang out a lot with his dog, Lolita. Barbabravo can be a little too pleased with himself, but he's still a good person.
- Big Eater: Mostly in Around the World and One Big Happy Family!, Barbabravo loves to eat and will often be seen talking about some kind of food. The official site points it out.
- Big "NO!": Lets this trope out in two episodes of One Big Happy Family!.
- Competition Freak: Barbabravo loves to win.
- Kid Detective: Has this side to him mostly beginning in the second season of the original series. Every few episodes revolve around him trying to solve mysteries to help out, though he's not very good at it.
- Lovable Jock: Despite being the jock of the family, Barbabravo is still very kind.
Barbabright (Barbibul) is a brilliant scientist. Neither chemistry, astrophysics or genetics are a secret for him. Although sometimes his inventions cause catastrophes.
- Bungling Inventor: Sometimes, Barbabright's inventions do not go according to planned.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Barbabright can invent many things for the family's convenience.
- Omnidisciplinary Scientist: He knows a lot about science.
- The Smart Guy: Shares this with Barbalib.
Barbabeau (Barbouille) is the only hairy Barbapapa, and he is an artist. He is rarely separated from his sketchbook. In the grip of creative torments, he can sometimes be very sensitive.
- Bad Hair Day: There were a laundry list of episodes where he had issues with his hair, but the most noticeable ones were the episode where Barbabright used a machine to comb his hair only for it to become a mess, which got worse thanks to Barbalala, Barbabelle and Barbabravo, and where his hair got sheared off by his dad by accident, leaving him bald.
Barbazoo (Barbidou) loves and protects natures and animals, and can be very sensitive.
- Animal Lover: Barbazoo loves animals, and is always taking care of them.
Barbabelle is a pretty Drama Queen who likes jewelry, dresses, and perfume. She spends a lot of time putting on makeup. She is afraid of small hairy animals.

- Girly Girl: She likes dresses, jewelry, and perfume.
Barbalib (Barbotine) is a bookworm and an activist. She is always immersed in books and knows a lot.
- Bookworm: You'll often see Barbalib reading a good book.
- The Lancer: The official site states that Barbalib often fights with Barbabravo because she also wants to be The Leader.
- The Smart Guy: Shares this with Barbabright.
Barbalala loves music, and can play all kinds of instruments. She is also interested in botany and ecology, like her brother Barbazoo. Barbalala has a dreamy and peaceful temperament. She hardly ever gets angry.
- Mellow Fellow: Barbalala is chill, and hardly ever loses her cool.
Other Characters
Lolita is a dalmatian, and the family dog of the Barbapapas. She is a goofball and is often seen around Barbabravo. She often seconds her master in his detective investigations and she is as fond of food as he is.
- Canine Companion: Lolita is this to Barbabravo.
Frank and Cindy (François and Claudine) are two children who witnessed the birth of Barbapapa from their garden. They travelled the world with Barbapapa to help him find a mate.
- Put on a Bus: Even though they were prominent characters in the original series, appearing just frequently enough, Frank and Cindy are completely abandoned in Around the World. It isn't until the 2019 reboot where they are shown and mentioned once during a flashback in the first episode, which explains how Barbapapa was born and how he grew a family. Other than that, they are not present in that series either.
