Main Characters

    Steven

Steven

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/steven.PNG
An orphan kid who ran away from his foster home. Unknown to even himself, he's the son of White Diamond, the matriarch of the Gem race.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: This story's version of Steven has naturally grey hair, contrasting his canon counterpart's dark brown hair.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: This Steven did not have the happy childhood that his canon counterpart had. He grew up under an abusive foster mother (which grew worse as time went on) and was often alone thanks to his horn (his gem). As a result, he's more self-loathing, has greater insecurities, and is prone to crying under difficult situations, especially when Rose and the Crystal Gems start accusing him of being White Diamond and being responsible for many atrocities. Made even worse by the fact that Steven actually believes them!
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the main series, Steven was Camp Straight. Here, he identifies as pansexual.
  • Adaptational Weapon Swap: Since he has White Diamond's gem instead of Rose's, Steven's weapon is a Magic Staff rather than a shield.
  • Age Lift: Only by about 1-2 years, but Steven in canon was roughly 12 in his debut episode. Here, he's confirmed to be 14.
  • All-Loving Hero: He's a loving kid who doesn't want to hurt anyone. While watching him, White Pearl was fascinated by how he treats everyone with kindness, even the small animals he interacts with.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: As Steven grew up, people often kept their distance from him because of his "horn".
  • Anime Hair: Steven's hair is naturally spiky and roughly resembles a five-pointed star, much like White Diamond's hair.
  • Astral Projection: With a bit of practice, Steven finds that he can inhabit White Pearls body in his sleep. He uses this to guide her to Beach City, which allows them to reunite near the end of Season 2.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Played With. Steven can control what White Pearl says to various degrees. But he has no idea that he's mind controlling her. When he finds out the truth, he has a breakdown and begs to not have the power anymore, practically freeing White Pearl.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's one of the nicest kids you'll ever meet, but as his reaction to seeing Pinkish Pearl/Earl poof shows, he has his limits before he gives in to unbridled fury.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Since Rose is Pink Diamond, managing to poof her against her will (and by accident at that) is a pretty big deal. Pearl even states in an eavesdropped conversation with Rose that Steven being able to poof her without her allowing it should be outright impossible.
  • Bizarre Human Biology:
    • Steven's gem takes up the entirety of his headspace. As X-Rays show, he doesn't have a brain.
    • This was even worse when he was an infant. As revealed in Pink(ish) Pearl's flashbacks, his gem went through his head, making it look as though he was impaled through the skull with a large diamond.
  • Character Development: It's subtle but after he uses his True Sight ability on himself, Steven seems to be losing his fear of being White Diamond while starting to reconcile that he is one - to the point that after the encounter with the fused gems in the Kindergarten, rather than descend into guilt, he instead takes the initiative to find out more with Amethyst behind the Crystal Gems backs, something that would have been unthinkable for Steven in the previous season.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: He's a sweet kid who wants to help others and carries the immense power and potential to do so, but he's offset by his low self-esteem and self-loathing regarding his past life as White Diamond (or so he believes).
  • Creating Life Is Unforeseen: When Seaglass is introduced to the Crystal Gems and Connie explains how regular seaglass naturally forms, he realizes that his blood on the glass of Lapis' shattered mirror, coupled with it being buried in the sand and the weathering caused by Lapis' flooding of Beach city is ultimately what created the new gem.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He grew up an orphan and had to live with various foster parents, some of which weren't pleasant. His last foster family was outright abusive to him on both a physical and emotional level. As White Pearl's flashbacks show, he was also subject to bullying and mocking growing up.
  • Death Glare: He gives a downright furious one to Pearl when her holo-clone accidentally poofs Pinkish Pearl/Earl. She was completely petrified at the sight of it.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Steven's first response to bumping into White Pearl, after the initial surprise, is to warn her about his angry foster mother, fearing that she might try and hurt White Pearl. This establishes two things about him: his kindness and compassion for others, and his lack of knowledge about his half-gem heritage.
  • Fan Boy: It turns out he's a fan of Mr. Universe's music, much to Greg's embarrassment.
  • The Fashionista: Steven possesses an interest in fashion, in contrast to the canon Steven's Limited Wardrobe.
  • Fatal Flaw: According to Word of God on Tumblr, his flaw is perfectionism. He has a paralyzing fear of screwing up and does everything he can to avoid doing so, which leads to him overthinking things. As seen when he tries to reason with Lapis, him actively trying to convince Lapis not to alert Homeworld to get the outcome that would be perfect for everyone involved rather than let her leave on more peaceful terms just made the whole situation even worse. This is especially ironic considering her obsession with everyone else being perfect was White Diamond's Fatal Flaw.
  • Foster Kid: Steven has been passed across different foster homes before landing with an abusive foster family prior to running away before White Pearl finds him.
  • Friendless Background: Steven was always an outcast growing up and never had many friends, and the few friends he did have were also outcasts. In Season 3, Episode 55, he states that he didn't really got along well with other kids his age due to most of them being trouble makers and him wanting to stay out of trouble.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom:
    • His eyes turn white whenever he's using his Mind Control powers, offering a subtle tell.
    • When Earl is poofed protecting him, Steven's eyes go white and he summons his staff, using it to effortlessly cut Holo-Pearl down with a single slash.
  • Good with Numbers: Steven's favorite subject in school was math, and he's "apparently pretty good at it", as he has a liking for puzzle books.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Like canon, he's half-human, half-Gem, only his mother is White Diamond in this story. However he is currently unaware of this. Due to growing up an orphan he believed that he was simply a deformed human, then he meets the Gems and they convince him that he’s actually a (full) gem since they don't know hybrids exist. He eventually thinks that he’s White Diamond herself.
  • Horned Humanoid: His gem is located in his head (taking place of his brain as well) and gives off the impression of a horn. His previous foster family even drew comparisons to a unicorn.
  • Iconic Outfit: While this Steven has an Unlimited Wardrobe, the outfit he's most associated with is his white hoodie with a four-pointed star at the center, blue jeans, and sneakers that he wears on the main cover and on occasion throughout the story.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Steven is often shown enjoying Tumblr fashion and working out of a clothing store as one of his multiple jobs. He eventually even paints his fingernails black.
  • Identity Amnesia: Thanks to both Steven and the Gems' lack of knowledge about his true nature, they both believe Steven is White Diamond and that he simply doesn’t remember. Steven is absolutely horrified at the things “he’s” done.
  • It's All My Fault: Due to his low self-esteem, he tends to blame himself whenever something bad happens, even when he's genuinely not at fault. He completely blames himself for White Diamond's atrocities even though he had nothing to do with them. He even blames himself for breaking the barrier to the barn despite it being an accident.
  • Light 'em Up: He's learned how to make his entire body glow with a bright white aura, very similar to how his mother could.
  • Light Is Good: He tends to have either bright or white color motifs, not to mention that his powers are those of White Diamond, and he's also the nicest character in the story.
  • Like Parent, Unlike Child: Steven could not be any more different from White Diamond (besides having a level of social anxiety and perfectionism). About the only things besides that he does have in common with his mother is having a similar fashion sense (such as having a taste for heeled shoes among others).
  • Magic Staff: Steven's weapon is a staff made of pure light with a gem near the top. It can alter its size and function both as a close combat weapon and a long range weapon. It's even able to unleash a powerful wide-range shock-wave that can poof other Gems instantly.
  • Mind Manipulation: One of his most powerful abilities is that he can assert his will over the minds of other Gems. He inadvertently does this to White Pearl and ends up using this ability to stop Lapis from going berserk. However, he really hates this ability ever since he found out he had it, and he was horrified with the knowledge that he was using it on Earl and guilt-ridden when he used it on Lapis.
  • Muggle Foster Parents: He's half-Gem and was fostered by normal humans. This caused him some grief growing up since his gem made him an outcast and his newest foster mother started using him to vent her anger.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Steven's Gem, due to formerly being White Diamond's Gem, appears to be practically invincible to other gems, for all intents and purposes. Case-and-point, Jasper tried headbutting it to shatter him. His gem instead pierced through her helm and poofed her without Steven even doing anything to defend himself.
  • Only One Name: Since he's an orphan here, he only ever goes by Steven. In Episode 178 he tells Greg that he was given the surname Pitriadamas after the area he was found in, but he doesn't use it.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Likely due to his nature as a Diamond (well, half-Diamond), Garnet has a hard time reading his future. Garnet later implies that it's likely a result of neither her nor Steven knowing anything on his abilities, since she can't properly read someone's future without knowing what they're capable of.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In his failed attempt to beg Lapis to not tell Homeworld about Earth, he reveals he's a diamond, and shows he can control gems. The attempt leaves her a definitive enemy.
  • Power Incontinence:
  • Precision F-Strike: He hardly ever swears, despite growing up with some salty mouthed foster parents, but he ends up shouting "Oh. My. Fucking god!" in a panic when he sees the Tongue Monster at the Beta Kindergarten.
  • Red Right Hand: Played With. Steven has the tip of a White Diamond jutting out of his forehead, and the rest of the diamond in the entirety of his skull, lacking even a brain. Because of this, a lot of people kept a distance from him, from families worried about potential medical bills, to religious families considering it a sign of the devil. However, Steven is a super nice kid. Among the Crystal Gems, it's just a normal part of him, so they don't mind, such as Pearl who has a giant pearl in her forehead.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He genuinely hates fighting and will only do so in self-defense, and even then, he'd rather talk things out.
  • Superpower Lottery: Due to him being the most powerful gem in existence, he has a wide assortment of powers that are already immensely strong individually. His powers displayed so far include...
    • An Absurdly Sharp Blade attack that rebounds when it doesn't hit something, only affects gems, and is strong enough to poof Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond.
    • The same Mind Control power that White Diamond displays in canon, which he seems to have unintentionally altered to be More than Mind Control, and which also lets him use Astral Projection to possess anyone he's controlling more personally.
    • A True Sight ability that lets him "see" corrupted gems in their original forms. However, his training with Garnet shows that it's less that he can see the "true self" of something or someone, but rather the intent of that object or person. This includes a Fusion's desire to separate or a flower's desire to bloom.
    • An Area of Effect attack that was able to One-Hit KO all of the Crystal Gems except for Rose with her shield up.
    • And of course, his Gem Weapon, a staff capable of extending in length and firing off said Absurdly Sharp Blade and Area of Effect attacks.
    • While whether it counts as a true "power" is debatable, his gem is far more durable than that of any other known gem - it not only managed to No-Sell an attack from Jasper when she tried to shatter him but broke her helmet and poofed her in the process.
  • Super-Strength: Just like his canon counterpart, he's much stronger than he looks and he's able to easily help Rose flip Kofi's car back onto its tires, something that surprises Sadie.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: When Rose poofs and reforms, Pearl covers Steven's eyes to prevent him from figuring out that Rose is Pink. From that point on, he continues to assume it's inappropriate to watch a Gem reform, and everyone's too confused to correct him.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Steven is still in the process of learning about his abilities, has little-to-no control over them, and is often discovering new powers by complete accident. However, he's also the single strongest member of the entire Gem race when he can use them, making him strong enough that managed to easily wipe out the Crystal Gems (barring Rose) in an instant by accident, and was able to poof Rose herself another time, again by accident, something that Pearl outright thought to be impossible unless she allowed it.
  • White Mage: Whenever he's faced with a Corrupted Gem, Steven's eyes start to glow white and the Corrupted Gem starts to partially heal, slowly taking on a more humanoid form. However, he's the only one who sees this, as everyone else still just sees a Corrupted Gem.

    White Pearl

White/Pink Pearl, aka Earl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/earl_1.PNG
The Pearl that originally belonged to White Diamond and previously Pink Diamond. She now cares for Steven and accompanies him on his travels.
  • Adaptation Name Change: As far as her nickname is concerned at least. Canonically, Steven called her Volleyball after being hit with a volleyball. Here, she's instead called Earl.
  • And I Must Scream: She's trapped in a state where she cannot speak and is forced to obey her Diamond's every thought, being a mere extension of her will. The overlap between what she wants and what Steven wants is unclear, though she has more input on her actions than she would if White Diamond were still around. After Steven has a Heroic BSoD and frees her, she's out of this state, but not completely free from Steven's unintentional control.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Lapis starts attacking Steven, she rides in on Lion and rushes to his rescue by throwing a baseball bat at the unsuspecting Gem.
  • Creepy Good: While her unnerving smile and damaged eye give her an eerie presence, Steven feels safest around her. The "Creepy" part is somewhat gone after Steven partly frees her.
  • Cute Mute: After being semi-freed, she becomes this; being unable to vocally communicate but being an absolute sweetheart all the same.
  • Fantastic Racism: As a Homeworld Gem she's opposed to cross-gem fusions like Opal. She even gets upset when Steven wants to fuse, though she does make an effort to move past it and later fuses with Steven when it becomes necessary.
  • Hand Signals: She learns to communicate through sign language after she's partially freed from Steven's control.
  • Interspecies Friendship: With Lion (an animal resurrected by Rose's powers) as well as Connie (human) and Steven, who's a Half-Human Hybrid (though neither is aware of this).
  • Irony:
    • She doesn't know that Rose Quartz used to be Pink Diamond, her closest friend/Only Friend. And as of Season 3 Episode 14, after Rose refers to Pink Diamond as a "coward" and nearly hurt Steven in the past, she angrily takes him away from Rose while Flipping the Bird to said ex-Diamond.
    • Despite having been on Earth for far less time, she's much better adjusted to Earth society and culture than the Crystal Gems' Pearl, despite the latter having been on Earth for millennia.
  • Literal-Minded: When Steven instructs White Pearl on doing something, she always takes it literally. When he said that she had to eatnote  she responds by trying to eat the box of crackers she was holding.note
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Word of God states that she hasn't been aware of anything that has happened since she was first "overwritten" by White Diamond until Steven was born. Which means that she is unaware of the Rebellion, Pink Diamond's death at her "replacement" Pearl's own hands to become Rose Quartz, or Era 2 in general. She reveals that she only came back to awareness after Steven was born, meaning she's also not aware of what happened to White Diamond either.
  • Morality Pet: Rose has shown a soft spot for her due to Earl being her original Pearl.
  • More than Mind Control: Earl implies that her "loyal servant" persona was more because she thought it was the one that "new White Diamond" would appreciate the most than because Steven was puppeteering her. It wore off the more familiar she grew with Steven, as she realized he didn't see her like that.
  • Must Have Caffeine: She loves coffee, which doubles as her Trademark Favorite Food. She even states (in sign language) that she'd like to become a barista so she could drink coffee whenever she wanted to.
  • Out of Focus: Due to Season 2 focusing on Steven and the Crystal Gems (combined with the two of them being separated with no means of contact), she's mostly absent for the season until near the end where she finally makes it to Beach City.
  • Secret-Keeper: Initially, she is the only one that knows Steven is White Diamond. However, she does not know specifically that he is a Half-Human Hybrid and believes him to be a new form White has taken.
  • Silent Snarker: Shows shades of this after she's semi-freed, such as rolling her eyes during Pearl's speech on summoning her weapon.
  • Taking the Bullet: Jumps in and takes Holo-Pearl's blade through her back in order to protect Steven.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: She becomes increasingly more expressive and autonomous throughout Season 1 even before Steven partially withdraws his influence from her.
  • Undying Loyalty: White Pearl toward Steven. At first, it's because she was under his (unintentional) control, but after she's freed, her immediate instincts are to save him after he falls ill. She even protects him from Rose, despite having every reason to just leave. It's clear that her devotion to Steven is her own choice.
  • The Voiceless: As an extension of her Diamond's will, she's incapable of speaking and can only communicate through repeating whatever she hears, similar to how Lapis would communicate while trapped in the mirror. After Steven frees her, she still cannot speak, so she starts learning sign language to compensate. It's also shown that she can communicate by projecting words from her gem, but she can only do so in the Gem language, so only other Gems can understand her. So far, Pearl is the only one who can translate what she's saying.

Crystal Gems

    Rose Quartz

Rose Quartz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_05_22_at_121857_am.png

The leader of the Crystal Gems.

  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: The fact that she didn't give up her life to create Steven ironically gives her the chance to be a much more present parent in his life than she was in the show, if still a bit flawed.
  • Beneath the Mask: Steven overhears her in episode 5 of Season 4 confiding to Lion about her own self-doubt and fears and blaming herself for 'messing up' despite just trying to do the right thing while trying to hide it from the other gems. This makes Rose really not all that different from Steven.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite being very loving and nurturing, and one of the kindest characters in the story, she's still the same gem who led the rebellion against the Diamonds. Even Steven, who doesn't know much about the rebellion, says that if she wasn't so sweet he'd be frightened of her. When she finds out that Steven is a Diamond (or at least assumes he is White Diamond since half-breeds are unheard of here), she drops all gentleness and has every intention of attacking and possibly shattering him.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • She, alongside Lion and Garnet, arrive in the nick of time to save Steven and Earl from Lapis.
    • She also appears once again to save Steven during his second fight with Jasper.
  • Big Good: Is this for the Crystal Gems and the original Rebellion from long ago.
  • Body Horror: During her fight with Jasper, her body starts gaining cracks all over, almost like she was about to break apart due to being pushed against the destabilizing force field.
  • Cool Big Sis: Since Rose is really Pink Diamond, she's technically this to Steven.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: When she is clearly envious of Steven's ability to fuse with a human being, Amethyst tries to tell her not to worry since it's probably a diamond exclusive power, which doesn't make Rose feel better since even if it is a diamond power then that turns it from a power she doesn't have to one she does have but can't use without revealing herself.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: What little she reveals of her past with White Diamond and Homeworld doesn't paint a very happy picture, and it's clear she hates revisiting it. And this is on top of the war and corruption of nearly all her former allies.
  • Death Glare: She gives an outright haunting one when she sees White Pearl and concludes that Steven is White Diamond.
  • Easily Forgiven: According to Chekhov, she's still responsible for cracking Earl's eye. Given how defensive White Pearl is of Pink Diamond's memory, it's clear that she doesn't hold it against her.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She's shown to look down on herself and doesn't think highly of her heroic actions. In particular, she views her past actions as Pink Diamond as those of a coward.
  • I Hate Past Me: She really hates her past life as Pink Diamond, even calling herself a coward.
  • Jerkass Realization: After seeing Steven's immense self-loathing for failing to protect Pinkish Pearl when she gets poofed, she begins to realize that she's treating him no different than how the other diamonds treated her. She even starts calling him Steven again.
  • Moral Myopia: After she wrongly believes Steven to be White Diamond, she accuses him of having rotated his gem around to deceive them. However, Rose herself is Pink Diamond, and she's been doing that exact same thing for over 5,000 years at this point.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • While Rose may despise White Diamond and now Steven by misunderstanding, she's at the very least trying to understand that they aren't one-to-one the same and that Steven is innocent of White's actions. Their relationship may be cold, but she's trying.
    • After seeing that he could have left the barn at any time and that he never once tried to escape, she tones down her harshness towards him and acknowledges that he's really not a threat to anyone.
  • Secret Identity: Rose Quartz is actually Pink Diamond, though nobody but Pearl of the Crystal Gems is aware of this.
  • Seen It All: At this point, the Crystal Gems have gotten into so many petty arguments that she really can't get surprised by them anymore. The most she musters is an expression that just screams "Of course this is happening again."
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She's not Steven's mother, so she's still alive here.
  • Super-Toughness: Being a Quartz, she can tank a lot of damage, and her shield can block attacks from Steven's staff, which can typically one-shot anything. She heads into Nigh-Invulnerable territory since she's actually Pink Diamond, and the Diamonds are almost indestructible. Pearl notes in a private conversation with Rose that even poofing her should be impossible.
  • Team Mom: Most obviously towards Steven and Amethyst. It's mostly absent from her interactions with Steven after The Reveal that he "was" White Diamond, her own abusive mother figure, though she is able to return to being something of a mother figure to him after after her Jerkass Realization.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After her initial falling out with Steven due to believing him to be White Diamond, she later patches things up with him and returns to being the maternal figure she was in Season 2.
  • Trauma Button: The sight of Steven glowing with his arms held out and a jacket around him like a cloak (he was holding Earl's jacket while keeping his new nail polish dry) greatly unnerves her due to its resemblance to White Diamond's signature pose.
  • You Remind Me of X: White Pearl states that Rose reminds her of someone back on Homeworld. It's pretty clear that she's talking about Pink Diamond.

    Garnet

Garnet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_59c05c50f65f4377152a66c6cc6863f8_10032ec2_1280.png

A fusion with the power of "Future Vision", and the powerhouse of the Crystal Gems.

  • Big Damn Heroes: She, alongside Rose and Lion, arrive in the nick of time to save Steven and Earl from Lapis.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Connie asks if there's a future where she becomes a member of the Crystal Gems, Garnet bluntly tells her no.
  • The Lancer: To the Crystal Gems and is more stoic than the openly maternal Rose.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: She quickly starts smashing the robinoid swarm sent to the galaxy warp and is too busy doing so to head Steven's attempts to warn her that she's splattering their repair gel all over the warp pad till it's too late.
  • Not So Stoic: She's typically calm and rational, but she breaks down into tears after Pinkish Pearl tells the Crystal Gems her life story.
  • Number Two: Contrasting canon, since Rose never gave her life to birth Steven, she's now the second-in-command of the Crystal Gems rather than the leader.
  • Pet the Dog: When she goes to the barn, she only returns Steven's coat and makes it clear that she's at least trying to understand that Steven isn't the same as White Diamond. She also accepts Steven's thanks for returning his coat.
  • Seers: Her "Future Vision" lets her see the many potential outcomes that may come to pass. Though she has a hard time reading Steven's future.
  • Stealth Mentor: Bluntly tells Connie that she cannot see a future where she joins the Crystal Gems... because at that moment Connie wasn't willing to make the choice for herself. After a short while, Connie gets what she means and chooses to make that future happen. Garnet, grinning, says that they had better get started, in that case.

    Pearl

Pearl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_05_22_at_121903_am.png

Rose's closest confidant.

  • Innocently Insensitive:
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Pearl's "jerkish" side is mostly due to her belief that Steven is White Diamond and that he is brainwashing Earl into doing what he wants, but she genuinely means well when she tries to talk Earl into leaving him, even going against Rose's orders to try and help who she believes is an enslaved pearl.
  • Literal-Minded: Almost as bad as White Pearl. When Amethyst said she was sick of constantly babysitting Steven, this was her response:
Pearl: I don't know WHAT sitting on human young has to do with this...
  • Moral Myopia: She visits the barn to try and convince Pinkish Pearl to leave her "Diamond" so that she could be free and independent. However Pearl in this time frame is still blindly loyal to Rose (aka Pink Diamond).
  • Never My Fault: Lashes out at Amethyst and Steven, blaming them for breaking the mirror that she gave them, refusing to acknowledge that she never explained to the latter how gems are used to power things.
  • The Perfectionist: According to Amethyst, it takes her a long time to decide on her new Gem forms whenever she poofs. This is because of her perfectionist nature.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • While she's still firmly against Steven after she believes him to be White Diamond, she is, at the bare minimum, acknowledging that his kindhearted behavior and regret is a step in the right direction for the former Gem Matriarch, which is the nicest thing she's said to him since they learned the Awful Truth.
    • She also offers to translate Earl's story to Steven and the Crystal Gems (as Earl cannot speak and Steven and Amethyst can't read gem writing) and is visibly moved by her backstory.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: She's technically right when she wonders if Steven is a moissanite considering that was the name of the form his mother took while on earth.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's the only character that knows that Rose is actually Pink Diamond.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After hearing Earl's full story, she drops her caustic attitude towards Steven and is now civil with him. She even gives Steven the mirror containing Lapis to help him learn Gem history.

    Amethyst

Amethyst

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_8e8a8db2d8216ab84c0f461ca55d7069_0a26474c_1280_4.png

The youngest of the Crystal Gems, who starts off with a strong dislike for Steven out of envy, but comes to care about him as time goes on.

  • Extreme Omnivore: As in canon, Amethyst eats whatever she feels like, whether it's a shell or normal food like pizza.
  • Hidden Depths: She apparently understands sign language, as seen when Earl speaks to Steven this way.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She's aware that the others (particularly Rose) aren't telling her anything she wants to know regarding Steven, and she's fed up with it.
  • Pet the Dog: Unlike the others, she doesn't hold any ill-will towards Steven after she learns that he's White Diamond. She even goes out of her way to return his phone to him after he loses it. Even before this, she had some understanding that Steven isn't the White Diamond that Rose knows, and tries to calm her down when she gets angry.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Has this with Steven in a one-sided version of this, as she's incredibly jealous of all the attention Rose gives him. After she overhears Steven say that she's justified in her jealousy and him feeling bad for taking up Rose's attention, she starts changing her tune about the young half-Gem.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When she meets Steven at the barn again, she states that she certainly isn't hanging around Steven because she cares about him or because she wants answers, and even if she were, it's definitely not because Rose refuses to tell them anything, especially her because she's the youngest. Steven even lampshades that she sounds like she really wants him to tell her something.
Steven: Amethyst, it kinda sounds like you want to talk to me about it.
    Amethyst: YA THINK, GENIUS?!
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She starts out as the most antagonistic of the Crystal Gems towards Steven, but mellows out after she overhears a conversation between him and Connie regarding how he feels that she has every right to dislike him. After this, she becomes the most consistently kind towards him.

Humans

    Sadie

Sadie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sadie_3.PNG
A clerk at the Big Bagel and one of Steven's fellow coworkers.
  • Benevolent Boss: While technically only Steven's coworker, she is his superior at Big Bagel and the closest thing he has to a boss while there. She's also nothing but nice and understanding to him.
  • Demoted to Extra: Her "Island Adventure" storyline is given to the Cool Kids.
  • Nice Girl: When she meets Steven and finds out he's new to town she gives him a bunch of sample bagels free as a welcome present. After Steven is confined to the barn she is very concerned about him, foists as much food onto White Pearl to take back to him as she can and tells her to let her know if he needs anything. She also doesn't care that he (supposedly) was a genocidal conqueror in the past and treats him no differently than before.

    Lars

Lars

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lars.PNG
Steven and Sadie's other coworker at the Big Bagel.
  • Hypocrite: He insults Steven by saying that he's always on his phone at the counter instead of working. Besides the fact that he's saying this while refusing to do his own job, he's also shown to be texting on his phone at the same time.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Chekhov stated that he feels a bit guilty over abandoning Steven in the freezer before the flood occurred.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In "The Last Shift", he outright abandons Steven, leaving him taking stock in the freezer while Lars flees the rising waters.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Had this when he looked at Steven as he arrived at the Big Bagel. Word of God states that this is because of guilt over abandoning Steven.

    Connie

Connie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/connie.PNG
Steven's best friend.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: While in canon, Connie was the Shrinking Violet who is brought out of her shell by the free-spirited Steven, here it's the opposite. Whenever Steven begins to fold into himself from his life-drama, Connie is usually the blunt practical voice that cheers him up. It really says something that she is the one who gets Steven to dance with her (leading to them fusing) when the opposite was the case in "Alone Together".
  • Age Lift: Connie's age is never specified but since Steven is older than when she meets him in canon, this applies to her by about a year.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: She tells Steven that it'd just be much easier if he just told the Crystal Gems that he lost the mirror and needs help finding it. Steven responds that he's scared of telling them because he just got their trust back and doesn't want to lose it.
  • Understanding Boyfriend: Gender-inverted. While Steven and Connie aren't a couple (yet), she's perfectly understanding of Steven's circumstances. Even being told that Steven was supposedly White Diamond didn't deter her at all.

    Greg

Greg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/greg_1.PNG
The owner of Beach City's car wash and unknowingly Steven's father.
  • Alien Abduction: A mysterious woman 'abducted' him from the top of a skyscraper in Empire City after a concert, keeping him for a year before he was found in the same woods an infant Steven was found in at about the same time.
  • Be Yourself: Harshly deconstructed. Marty points out that they 'tried' to make Greg a success with his own style and music, and it didn't work. Greg only gained the fame he desired by 'not' being himself. So Greg finds himself in a situation where he can either be himself and fail, or be someone he's not and succeed. The entire thing just ends up making him miserable.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He doesn't react very well to seeing Jasper's "giant hand ship" and alludes to a bad experience that caused him to end his singing career. In "Story" we find out that after leaving Beach City he went on to have a successful music career that he hated because it wasn't his music or his look anymore. Then he met and went with another mysterious giant woman, and then forgot a year of his life only to wind up in the woods where Steven was found.
  • Has a Type: Considering his attraction to both Rose and the Mysterious Woman he met in Empire City, it would be safe to say Greg has a thing for giant, full-figured women.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Unlike canon, he's pretty in the dark regarding the darker aspects of Gem history like the Rebellion and Homeworld, though he honestly prefers it that way.
  • Lonely at the Top: In this continuity, Greg actually made it as a famous musician, but he did so by singing other people's songs and abandoning his outer space theme for a look he hates.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: The author confirms that Greg is still Steven's father. However, nobody (yet) except White Diamond knows this.
  • Mysterious Past: The details of Greg's past with White Diamond or Rose remain yet to be revealed.
  • Nice Guy: He's nothing but kind to Steven and offers him his barn to stay in.
  • Riches to Rags: He used to be a really famous and wealthy musician in the past, but he gave it up after his abduction. Now he lives a much less lavish life in Beach City, the fame and fortune long behind him. Though he doesn't seem to mind, as "making it" hadn't made him happy.

    The Cool Kids

Buck Dewey, Jenny Pizza and Sour Cream

A trio of teenagers who have entered a three-way relationship.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Star in a mini-arc starting in 'Advisory' which takes place just after Jenny's debut episode, and which serves as the series' counterpart to "Island Adventure".
  • Hero of Another Story: 'Adverse' reveals some of their off-screen adventures, specifically the reason why Buck and Sour Cream were fighting in the first place: a bad encounter with Sour Cream's biological father.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Jenny expresses frustration that her dad grounded her for something she didn't do, before admitting that she borrowed his car without permission to travel with the boys to Empire City.
Jenny: But that's not the point!
  • Missing Mom: Jenny doesn't have one, though it's ambiguous as to whether she's deceased or merely absent like Sour Cream's father.
  • Polyamory: Confirmed by Jenny. The three of them are dating each other.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The crux of the problems Steven attempts to help them with, as well as a running theme of their island adventure:
    • None of the Cool Kids want to explain to their parents where they went and what they were doing, leading to them being grounded. This is because they met Sour Cream's bio-dad, and Jenny doesn't want to be responsible for Yellowtail finding out about it.
    • Jenny is also furious with her twin because Kiki assumed that their problems must stem from their polyamorous relationship, leaving her to question whether Kiki's claims of supporting her decision were just a lie.
    • Steven initially assumes that their issues naturally pale in comparison to his own problems, leading to him being Innocently Insensitive in his efforts to help. He also dismisses Jenny's offer to try and help him in an unintentionally insulting fashion.

Homeworld

    White Diamond

White Diamond

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/white.PNG
Steven's mother and the matriarch of the Gem race. She died about fourteen years ago giving birth to Steven.
  • Death by Adaptation: As the very premise of the story is her being Steven's mother instead of Rose, she's dead in this story while she's alive in canon. Or is she…?
  • The Ghost: She's talked about frequently by Steven, Rose, and the Crystal Gems, but she's never once seen in the story. One of the cover images has her silhouette, while the closest she has to an in-story appearance is her eye being seen behind Steven when he looked into Lapis' broken mirror.
  • Ghost in the Machine: Internal Monologue reveals that her consciousness still lives in her son's mind and is trying to convince Steven to "go home".
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: The biggest Driving Question of this web comic is who, what, where, when, how, and why did White Diamond of all people have a son?
    • After Steven uses their powers to stop the Custer she is furious. Steven is particularly confused bye this since they would have died too if he hadn’t stopped it.
  • Not Quite Dead: She supposedly died when she gave birth to Steven with her gem erased like Rose in canon. But later in the story Steven has a dream where he gets a computer warning saying “file: corrupted, reset to default” hinting that White's personality still exists and is trying to reinsert itself. Episode 203 basically confirms it with White talking directly to Steven in a dream and trying to convince him to “go home”.
  • Posthumous Character: She died giving birth to Steven, so she's long gone by the time the events of the story take place. Her presence is still felt by many and her past actions are ultimately what drive the story forward. However, it’s hinted she may still be alive somewhere inside his subconscious.
  • The Unapologetic: Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond implies that White Diamond, in the entirety of the time she knew her, never apologized once for anything she did. It's when Steven tries apologizing to Rose for whatever made her angry does Rose begin to doubt her certainty that they are the same person.

    Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lapis.PNG
A Homeworld Gem trapped in a mirror given to Steven.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Due to the misunderstanding between her and Steven, by the time she returns to Earth with Peridot and Jasper, she is very much on their side.
    • Canonically, she was forced to fuse with Jasper. Here, she forced Peridot to fuse with her.
  • And I Must Scream: Her state while being trapped in the mirror, which seems to be her Trauma Button, considering her reaction to Steven's powers.
  • Cassandra Truth: Doesn't believe Steven when he says he's a Diamond. Or when he claims to be a friend, later on.
  • The Dreaded: The Crystal Gems and Rose are scared of her due to her caste being designed for terraforming entire planets. Steven seems to be one for her given her panic when he poofs Jasper.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Steven's miscommunication when trying to talk her down, coupled with him accidentally mind controlling her, left her feeling both betrayed and terrified by him all at once.
  • Making a Splash: She has complete control over water, even from within the mirror after her gem is healed. She ends up causing the tides around Beach City to rise.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: She was more than willing to fight Steven after believing he was trying to control her, pretending to be a Diamond. Upon accidentally controlling her, she flees in terror!
  • Parting the Sea: In Episode 34 of Season 3, she parts the oceans around Steven and carves a path directly to her.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Steven begs her not to tell Homeworld about the Crystal Gems, pointing out humans and the earth don't deserve the Crystal Gems punishment. Her response is basically, "Neither did I."
Lapis: I didn't deserve what happened to me either.
  • Trauma Button: Being trapped or controlled against her will seems to be hers. Lapis lashes out at anyone she thinks might try to keep her on earth, even at Steven who she was initially lenient towards for freeing her. She does not take it well when Steven uses his powers on her.

    Peridot

Peridot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peridot_wpas.png
A Homeworld Gem sent to Earth to inspect and repair the Warp Pad.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Being a loyal Homeworld Gem, she's heavily disgusted by cross-gem fusion. She only fused with Lapis due to a mix of desperation and being forced into it, and even then, the first episode of Season 4 makes it clear that she doesn't want to do it again, and when Lapis coerces her into doing it, it's made clear that she hates every bit of it.
  • Oh, Crap!: She has this reaction when Steven accidentally poofs Jasper.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After seeing Garnetaurus, she immediately rushes to get the Hell out of there.

    Jasper

Jasper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2020_12_19_at_14918_pm.png
A ruthless Quartz soldier from Homeworld who has a history with Rose Quartz.
  • Blood Knight: She lives for battle. When she sees Rose and the Crystal Gems, she comments that it's the first time Earth hasn't disappointed her.
  • Born Lucky: Deconstructed in Season 5, Episode 1. When shown around the Beta Kindergarten, Jasper reveals to Steven the hole she came out of, and he gets Past-Life Memories confirming the sheer strength she had coming out of the gate. However, Steven tears down the idea that she's impressive just because she was born strong by pointing out how she never once had to earn the strength she's so proud of. It makes her entire status as the World's Strongest Woman a product of random chance/luck, and by extension, makes her all the more unimpressive.
  • Epic Fail: When she tries to headbutt Steven, she poofs herself instead even though Steven wasn't even doing anything.
  • Exact Words: Makes a deal that if Rose can beat her in one-to-one combat, she'll tell them everything she knows about the Cluster. When Rose does succeed in poofing her, she reveals that she knows nothing about the Cluster, having been just sent to guide and protect Peridot.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Discussed. When she's being interrogated and makes it clear that whatever the Diamonds are plotting with tear the Earth apart, she makes it clear that so long as it wipes out the Crystal Gems and avenges Pink Diamond, then she couldn't care less if she dies in the process.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Homeworld and Pink Diamond.
  • Use Your Head: Her main form of attack is using her head (when clad in her helmet) to bash her enemies into submission. She attempts to do this to Steven to shatter his gem, but because he has the White Diamond gem in his forehead, her helmet gets broken by it, which poofs her instead.

Gem Fusions

    Stevonnie

Stevonnie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2020_10_17_at_123837_am.png
The 3/4-human, 1/4 gem fusion between Steven and Connie.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Canon!Stevonnie had black hair the same as Steven and Connie. While here Steven's hair is silver and Connie's is black, here Stevonnie is very much a brunet(te).
  • Always Someone Better: While Rose is elated to see Stevonnie in person, Garnet immediately picks up that Rose feels jealous that Steven can fuse with humans when she can't. It certainly does not help when Amethyst thinks it could be a Diamond-exclusive power.

    Rainbow Quartz

Rainbow Quartz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raibowquartz.png

The fusion between Pearl and Rose Quartz.

  • Ascended Extra: In canon, she only ever appeared twice during flashbacks and never spoke either time. Here, she not only speaks, but takes part in the fight against the returning Lapis and Peridot.
  • Combat Hand Fan: Unlike Rainbow Quartz 2.0 in canon (whose weapon is a parasol), here Rose's version instead wields a massive hand-fan.

    Aventrine

Aventrine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_03_27_at_120519_pm.png
The fusion of Lapis and Peridot.
  • All There in the Manual: Her name is first revealed on the author's writing tumblr rather than in the comic.
  • Flight: Similar to Lapis, she can fly, though hers relies on using Peridot's limb enhancers as a jetpack rather than via Lapis' water wings.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While their fusion is unstable and both are knee-jerk antagonistic to Steven, it's not until they point it out to Coral does she/they realize that Steven is the one in complete control of the fusion.

    Coral

Coral

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_03_27_at_120416_pm.png
The fusion of Steven and White Pearl/Earl.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: It is not until Aventurine points it out does Coral realize that their mind is 100% Steven in-control. When they unfuse, Earl has no memory of being Coral.
  • Magical Girl: Their design and introduction pose invokes this.

Other Characters

    Moissanite

Mystery Woman/Moissanite

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_05_22_at_121619_am.png
"Regretting mistakes... missing opportunities... such common issues."

A mysterious gem that caused Greg's breakdown and eventual retirement.

  • All There in the Manual: Her name is revealed in a Character Sheet post.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's up in the air about whether she's a gem working under White Diamond, or White Diamond herself using a smaller form as a disguise like Pink is.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • When she meets Greg, he vents to her about how unfulfilling his music career has become. She asks what he wants and he admits that he just wants a way out. She abducts him, Greg had no memory of what happened then, and when he is found a year later in the woods, he spends time at a psychiatric hospital before returning to Beach City, has officially retired from the music business.
    • Indirectly, she also granted his other wish to see Rose again, as him moving to Beach City to forget what happened to him led to him rekindling his friendship with Rose.
  • Meaningful Name: Moissanite is a gemstone that's used as a substitute diamond, is found in meteorites, and is associated with the stars. Much like how Moissanite's outside looks like a starry sky.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Discussed. While the idea of magic and aliens are no stranger to Greg given his constant exposure to the Crystal Gems and their antics, whatever she showed him defied description to the point where years later, he is still unsure whether any of it was real or just fabrications his brain made to cope with what really happened.
  • Star-Spangled Spandex: She wears a black dress and gloves that give off the impression of a starry night.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's very tall, much more so than Greg, and is rather gorgeous. Greg even calls her stunning.

    Seaglass

Seaglass

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2ba279c78779b67e4a9f0ac91083e8e2.jpeg

A young gem discovered by Stevonnie during a lookout for the Homeworld gems.

  • Affectionate Nickname: She's called CG for short.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She is the youngest gem on earth and is treated affectionately by the Crystal Gems and Earl as a younger sibling.
  • Cheerful Child: She's very young by gem standards and is a happy go lucky little kid.
  • From the Mouths of Babes: She expresses her conviction that doing scary things is important and that sometimes it's more important to do them even if you are scared. Then she acknowledges that she also gets scared but doesn't let it stop her. Greg is quietly touched by her courage.
  • Original Character: She's a gem of the author's design and is specific to the comic.
  • The Voiceless: Subverted. At first, it looks like she's this when Stevonnie brings her back to the temple, only for her to reveal that she can actually talk, much to their surprise. When they ask why she didn't talk before, she states that she just thought it was funny.
  • Younger Than They Look: Which is very impressive when you consider that she already looks pretty young, but it's revealed that she's only nine days old.
