Ashen Wolf House

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ashen_wolves_banner.png
Banner of the Ashen Wolves
One of the four houses of the Officer's Academy. Initially created with the purpose of giving the less fortunate an opportunity, the house eventually began accepting people from outside Fódlan as well as the downtrodden. According to many, the house is also disliked for housing foreigners.
    In general
  • Adaptation Expansion: In the side story, not much information about the creation of the Ashen Wolves was given, aside from Aelfric suggesting the creation of the house fifteen years ago and the name coming from the wolves that defended the Goddess' home. In the fanfic, the house was originally founded to give the less fortunate, such as commoners and lesser families, a place at Garreg Mach before it began taking in students from other countries.
  • Animal Motifs: Like the other houses, they have one as well. Their house animal is a wolf, or more accurately, the wolves that defend the home of the Goddess.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • The house in general is this as in the game, it was never treated as a proper house and was officially disbanded by Rhea at the end of the side story. In the fanfic, however, the house is legitimate like the other three.
    • Among the nationality of the Ashen Wolf House's students are those hailing from Albinea, one of the least known countries in the world of Three Houses.
  • Army of Thieves and Whores: The students that make up the house are either those from less-fortunate backgrounds or foreigners - the latter of which are viewed with suspicion by Fódlan natives.
  • Blue Blood: Currently, the only noteworthy members of the Ashen Wolves are Constance and Balthus, though Constance's house fell long ago, making her a fallen noble of sorts. The Ashen Wolf House also houses lesser noble families, which it was originally created for until it began accepting others outside Fódlan.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: An ostracized house containing foreigners and troublemakers from across the continent and haven't had a teacher in a long time? Sounds very much like a high-school drama delinquent class.
  • Fantastic Racism: The house in general is subject to this, partially because of the negative view people have of those outside of Fódlan.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: As stated by Seteth, the Ashen Wolf House is the least-liked by the other students and the Church of Seiros for the reasons stated up above. This is also the reason why he warns Byleth that not everyone may approve of his choice to become the Ashen Wolf House's professor.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: Excluding their professor, the core members of the Ashen Wolf House are Yuri, Balthus, Hapi and Constance; two boys and two girls.
  • Multinational Team: Aside from those born in Fódlan, the Ashen Wolves also accept students from outside the continent. Among the foreigners that make up the house are those from Brigid, Duscur, Almyra, and as of recently Albinea.

    Byleth

Byleth Eisner

Age: ???

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/artwork_byleth_m_9.png
Ashen Demon
The son of Jeralt, former Captain of the Knights of Seiros and leader of the mercenary band known as the Sword Bearers. Described as being Jeralt's "shadow," his encounter with the House Leaders during a bandit attack leads to him becoming a professor at the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach Monastary.

He is the Professor of the Ashen Wolf House.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Compared to his near non-existent knowledge of the political affairs within the continent in the game, Byleth has a somewhat better understanding of what's transpired and knows of the Knights of Seiros to some limited degree. At the very least, he thought they were another mercenary band instead of being left in the dark. This part is removed in the rewritten version, where he knows nothing about them like in the game.
  • Badass Cape: Wears a Coat Cape on his person, with cut-outs in the armpits to help pull off the look.
  • Badass Teacher: While Byleth doesn't think himself as "teacher" material, he is equally as capable as the students and the Knights of Seiros, if not more.
  • Call to Adventure: Played with. Byleth works as a mercenary under his father, but he's more or less forced to join the Officer's Academy as a teacher after saving the students from bandits and being recommended by Alois. He's rather offset by this and notes he has zero qualifications of being a teacher, even asking Rhea point-blank why she thought this was a good idea.
  • Coat Cape: Their Badass Cape is worn in this manner, and even has cut-outs in the armpits to help pull off the look.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Byleth wears dark armor and a black coat over his shoulders, and in spite of his mercenary history, he is still a heroic individual.
  • The Dreaded: Implied in Part I: Chapter 2. When Yuri asks for information about the Sword Bearers, specifically Byleth, one of his men is shocked to hear that the "Ashen Demon" is the new professor, and perhaps a little fearful. Even some of Byleth's own comrades in the Sword Bearers are a little wary of him due to his stoic and unflinching nature out on the battlefield.
  • The Gadfly: In spite of his stoicism, Byleth does have a sense of humor. When Alois asks who he is after the fight with the bandits has been settled, he says he's a bandit, which draws weird looks from the students.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite having a hard time understanding or feeling certain emotions, Byleth actually despises his moniker as the "Ashen Demon and hates how he can't express himself the same way everybody else can.
  • Honor Before Reason: Regarding where his loyalties rest, Byleth states that his loyalty belongs to his father and whoever hires their services. He also hates mercenaries who would stab their clients in the back if someone is offering to pay more than the one who hired them.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Byleth isn't useless without his sword; by his own admission he needs every possible advantage he can get when combatting enemies, so learned magic.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: During the battle with the bandits, Byleth rushed to defend Edelgard when she was about to be killed by Kostas. It was only thanks to Sothis rewinding time that saved him, though not before she lambastes him for pulling such a stupid stunt.
  • Meaningful Name: "Byleth" is one of the spellings used for Beleth, the name of a demon king from demonology. Fittingly, he has a reputation from his years as a mercenary and is known by others as the "Ashen Demon."
  • The Mentor: Played with. Byleth chooses to become the professor in charge of the Ashen Wolf house, but he questions Rhea's decisions of making him a teacher when he has no qualifications nor ability to actually teach in general.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Besides the Meaningful Name, and if Yuri's subordinate reacting to the news of him becoming a professor with shock is of any indication, few people are willing to mess with a guy who's called the "Ashen Demon."
  • Perpetual Frowner: Byleth rarely emotes, and what few times he does, he usually acts with surprise or shock.
  • Red Baron: Due to their years as a mercenary working under his father, Byleth came to be called the "Ashen Demon" due to the utter indifference on his face as he cut down countless enemies.
  • The Stoic: Byleth is mostly emotionless, but he does act with some semblance of feeling as the synopsis of the story implies the reason he chose to instruct the Ashen Wolves was because he felt drawn to them, seeing as how they were more or less outcasts of society.

    Yuri

Yuri Leclurc

Age: 19

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3h_yuri_artwork.png
Underground Lord
Originally born in a small town in the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, living with his mother, Yuri was adopted by House Rowe before leaving for unstated reasons. He is the House Leader of the Ashen Wolves.
  • The Chessmaster: Yuri demonstrates his strategic chops in the mock battle by having Constance and Hapi set the forest on the eastern side of the plains ablaze, then block off the only road connecting the stronghold the Black Eagles are occupying to the plains. This leaves the Ashen Wolves free to battle the Blue Lions while Edelgard and the others are forced to combat Claude and the Golden Deer if they want a crack at them.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Described as such by Byleth during Kostas' attack on the House Leaders. If he couldn't kill his opponent, then he'd definitely make sure they wouldn't be able to fight again by severing their limbs. He's also willing to uses his Combat Stilettos and resort to underhanded moves such as a Groin Attack to gain the upper-hand.
  • Combat Stilettos: His boots have a rather prominent heel to them, which he uses to great effect during his fight with Dimitri in the mock battle.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Both his hair and eyes are colored lavender.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He can be one hell of a snarker when he wants to be, even when in the presence of church officials like Seteth.
  • Foil: To his fellow House Leader, Claude. Both are schemers of their own right and are treated with some suspicion and dismay by others, though whereas Claude gets flak for his questionable position as the next head of the Leicester Alliance, Yuri is viewed with distrust because of his past and the fact that the Ashen Wolves is more or less an Army of Thieves and Whores. Additionally, whereas Claude is a member of a royal house by Leicester Alliance standards, Yuri is of normal lineage that was adopted by a nobleman in Faerghus.
  • The Gadfly: He loves to tease, especially towards Constance. Though he refused to help her when she asked for his assistance in rebuilding House Nuvelle, Yuri internally notes that he would have accepted. He just likes being a "bastard," in his own words.
  • Guyliner: His eyelids are covered in purple eyeliner, which definitely helps his Bishōnen looks.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: During the House Leaders' discussion with Byleth, Yuri says that he'll probably earn a reward for saving "three big shots and a troublesome rat," implying he doesn't have a good opinion of himself.
  • In-Series Nickname: He's called "Yuri-bird" by Hapi, even though she remembers his name perfectly compared to everybody else she knows.
  • The Leader: Of the Ashen Wolf House, naturally. He's also the leader of his own gang of thieves in Abyss.
  • Noodle Incident: According to Manuela and Hanneman, Yuri killed a group of Knights of Seiros when he went out on a mission with them. While the details aren't specified, he was nearly expelled and remained at the academy, if only to due to the intervention of another church official by the name of Aelfric.
  • Older Than They Look: He looks like he's around the same age as the rest of the House Leaders, but he's slightly older than them and is 19 years old.
  • The Runaway: He was adopted by Counte Rowe, but left for unstated reasons.

    Balthus

Balthus von Albrecht

Age: 26

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3h_balthus_artwork.png
King of Grappling
A noble from the Leicester Alliance and former student of the Golden Deer House, Balthus sought asylum in Garreg Mach after incurring the wrath of one too many people and getting himself a substantial amount of debt. Though not an official member of the Ashen Wolf House, having graduated years ago, Yuri considers him part of the house and values his experience.
  • The Adjectival Superhero: Whenever he calls himself the "King of Grappling," he tends to put an adjective in front of it.
  • Badass Longcoat: Unlike Yuri, he wears a coat instead of a simple jacket or a proper uniform in general.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Part of the reason why he calls himself the King of Grappling. He prefers fighting up-close and personal and throwing a punch or two at his opponents.
  • The Big Guy: He's easily the tallest person in the Ashen Wolf House if not in the Officer's Academy altogether. Justified, though, as he's a grown adult and is in his mid-twenties.
  • Genius Bruiser: On top of being a Bare-Fisted Monk, Balthus also knows some healing magic alongside Yuri.
  • Hot Blooded Sideburns: Has the beginnings of one.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's a looker, he's tall, and he's absolutely ripped.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: He would be otherwise topless without his Badass Longcoat.
  • Older Than They Look: He's 26, technically making him the oldest student at the Officer's Academy despite the fact that he graduated years ago.
  • Trapped by Gambling Debts: The whole reason he's in the Ashen Wolf House despite having graduated from the Officer's Academy years ago. In addition to being hunted down by assassins hired by his stepmother, his debtors hound him constantly in an attempt to claim the money he owes them. It doesn't help that he raised a lot of hell while on the run in the Alliance, making Garreg Mach the only safe haven for him.

    Hapi

Hapi

Age: 20

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3h_hapi_artwork.png
A strange girl hailing from Faerghus, Hapi is an otherwise passive woman who doesn't bother to hide her apathy. Unlike the other members of the Ashen Wolves, Hapi's origins are a mystery, save for her distaste for the Church of Seiros.
  • Blood Knight: Not normally, but when Byleth states they'll be facing off against the Knights of Seiros in a training exercise and gives them free reign to do as they please (barring killing their opponents and using bladed weaponry), Hapi is exceptionally eager.
  • Brutal Honesty: If she has anything to say, expect her to say it without any filter whatsoever.
  • Casting a Shadow: Like Lysithea and Hubert, she's incredibly proficient with Dark Magic. Byleth even likens her magic to being a "ball of shadows."
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: She has noticeable bags under her eyes, reflecting on her dour personality and mental exhaustion from keeping her emotions in check.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Her hair and eyes are both colored magenta.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Seems to have one involving the Church of Seiros, as she does not have a favorable view towards the knights.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Along with being Brutal Honesty.
  • The Eeyore: She has a rather depressing atmosphere and is easily the most cynical among those at the Officer's Academy. She isn't a full out nihilist, but does have a rather negative view towards authority and society in general, especially in regards to the Church.
  • Emotionless Girl: She rarely, if ever, emotes.
  • Ironic Name: For someone named "Hapi," she's easily the most cynical person in Garreg Mach Monastery.
  • The Nicknamer: According to Yuri, she can't remember people's names for the life of her (except Yuri), so she gives people nicknames. She calls Constance "Coco," Balthus "B," Yuri "Yuri-bird" and Hubert "the Bert."
  • Only One Name: She has no surname unlike the others in her house.

    Constance

Constance von Nuvelle

Age: 18

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3h_constance_artwork.png
Sorcery Incarnate
A noble lady hailing from the Adrestian Empire, Constance hails from House Nuvelle, which has long since fallen due to a conflict. Her primary goal is to restore her House to its former glory.
  • Fallen Princess: By the time the story begins, House Nuvelle has long since collapsed due to a conflict, losing everything it once had. Constance wishes to restore her house to its former glory.
  • Goal in Life: Constance's ultimate goal is to restore House Nuvelle to its noble status.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She has purple highlights and is a refined former noblewoman.
  • Impoverished Patrician: As exlplained in Fallen Princess. Averting the "impoverished" part is her Goal in Life.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Despite being a fallen noble, Constance possesses remarkable magical talent as stated by Yuri and Byleth.
  • Last of Her Kind: She is the sole remaining member of House Nuvelle after its fall.
  • Mood-Swinger: When she isn't out in broad daylight, Constance acts like a typical noble and is incredibly haughty. When she is under the sun, she becomes more subdued and depressed to the point of self-deprecating. This throws Byleth and Sothis for a loop when they see it for themselves.
  • Pride: Her ego is the size of the sun, owing to her status as a noble despite the current state of her house and her proficiency in magic.
  • Proper Lady: As one might expect of a noble lady, Constance acts very proper in both speech and posture.
  • The Proud Elite: Subverted. Constance takes great pride in being a member of House Nuvelle and is greatly skilled in the art of magic. That said, as much as she wishes otherwise, she actually has no noble clout or power anymore after her house felll She's also genuinely kind and caring towards her friends.
  • Sole Survivor: While the details haven't been specified, Constance is the only remaining member of House Nuvelle left. When her house fell, so too did her whole family.
  • True Blue Femininity: Very sophisticated and wears a blue cravat and headband.
