    Setsuna Mudo
Voiced by: Kenji Nojima (Japanese), Scott Cargle (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/setsuna.png
Alexiel's current human incarnation and the prophezied Messiah who will bring about Apocalypse. Setsuna is emotionally tortured because of his love for his biological sister Sara, trying his best to not let her know and even goes so far to push her away.

As the game Angel Sanctuary is distributed at his school, weird deaths occur to some students and he gets accosted by two demons who call him 'Alexiel' and he learns that his best friend is an undead soul following him through his incarnations.

Setsuna's goal is to get reunited with Sara and fulfill Adam Kadamon's wish to rescue him.

  • Abusive Parents: Setsuna's mother is hostile toward him because she believes that he has been “protected by the devil” during accidents (protected by Alexiel, actually). She has also been beating Setsuna, even before she learns of his feelings for Sara.
  • Always Save the Girl: Played straight at first, then subverted: The first time Setsuna reaches Sara, she refuses to go with him, since it would trigger widespread consequences.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: He's in love with his biological sister Sara. When they run away together, they end up sleeping with each other.
  • But Not Too Foreign: His grandfather was a Brit, which is why he and his sister have naturally brown hair.
  • Came Back Wrong: Averted - Belial's fake revive potion would have rendered Setsuna undead if it hadn't been stolen.
  • Character Development: Setsuna starts off as a hot head who can't control his astral-powers or his emotions, refusing to accept his reincarnation of Alexiel and anything supernatural, only caring about his own selfish goals and getting his beloved sister back. As he proceeds, though, and learns what his actions cause, he toughens up and tries to help other people and see beyond his own needs.
  • Chekhov's Gift: Kira gives Setsuna a red crystal pendant and tells him it's a good luck charm, neglecting to mention that it will summon Alexiel's sword.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: After rescuing her from angels, Setsuna kisses Sara while he thinks she is sleeping. Zig Zagged: Sara says she knew he was going to kiss her and she didn't want to stop him.
  • Eye Scream: When Rosiel takes over Setsuna's body via a computer-chip in his eye, Setsuna frees himself by cutting his own eye out.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Kira.
  • In-Series Nickname: Set-chan by Kato, and Alec by Uriel (Alex in VIZ.)
  • Interrupted Suicide: Setsuna tries to kill himself because he doesn't know how to cope with his feelings for Sara without endangering her, but Zaphikel stops him by pouring boiling hot tea over him. He then encourages the teenager to keep on living - he must never run away, even if it means that he has to suffer - and reassures him that he'll become stronger, that he's not alone and that he should live his life the way he wants to.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: After Sara's death has triggered Alexiel's awakening (and thus the destruction of Assiah), Setsuna enters a dream-like state in which Sara is alive and is his girlfriend (but not his sister); Kira is Setsuna's shy, studious human friend; Ruri, Kato and Yoji are alive; neither angels nor demons exist. When "Sara" flaunts her ruby ring, Setsuna remembers that the toy ring he gave to Sara broke when she died, and once he knows this place is only an illusion, he decides he can no longer stay there while people in the real world need him.
  • Orphean Rescue: Setsuna follows Sara's soul through Hades, and on to Heaven, in his attempts to get her back after her death.
  • Parental Neglect: Setsuna's father has custody of him but goes on vacation without telling him.
  • Power Limiter: The earrings Kira gave him turn out to have limiting his power slightly. They break when Setsuna really flips out.
  • Reincarnation: He's Alexiel current reincarnation. During a stint when his current body is dead Setsuna's soul enters Alexiel's body.
  • Sharing a Body: With Alexiel, though it is seldom obvious.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • He delivers one to JHWH Himself
  • Time Master: Downplayed. Setsuna uses Time Magic, unconsciously, to preserve Kato's soul and keep it from being extinguished.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Upon learning that Kira is possessed by an undead spirit that's following Alexiel's reincarnations, Setsuna asks if their whole friendship was fake and didn't mean anything. Kira says yes though he looks like he's about to cry. Arachne and the real Sakuya point out how human he has become.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Setsuna is scolded by Kira, Kurai and Kato for wanting to give up after Zaphkiel's arrest

    Sara Mudo

Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi (Japanese), Tara Sands (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sara.png

Setsuna's younger sister and love interest. After their parents' separation, Sara lives with their mother and goes to a Catholic school. Sara is in love with her biological brother Setsuna and eventually decides to give up her home, friends and mother to be with him.

Sara is actually the human reincarnation of the water angel Jibril.

  • Attempted Rape: Almost got raped by a neighbor when she was a child, but Setsuna beat him away. Sandalphon attempts to rape Sara later, trying to create a body that he can possess, but Setsuna and the others arrive in time to stop him.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: She's in love with her brother Setsuna and they sleep with each other after running away.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Her grandfather was a Brit, hence she and Setsuna have naturally brown hair.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Throws herself in front of Setsuna and dies, which causes him to start the Apocalypse.
  • #1 Dime: The red glass ring she wears. It was the first present Setsuna ever gave her and she's treasured it for years.
  • Parental Neglect: Sara's father doesn't have custody of or contact with her after separating from his wife.
  • Reincarnation: She is actually the reincarnation of the water angel Jibril and returns to her old body briefly.
  • Sharing a Body: With Jibril.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Sara gives one to Raphael by railing into him about his constant sweet-talk towards women and thinking by being like that, he can prevent himself from getting hurt.
    • She gives one to Michael, after he crashed into Raphael's home and practically destroyed it.

    Sakuya Kira

Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese), Wayne Grayson note  (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kira.png
Setsuna's laid-back friend and sempai. He is possessed by a soul that has been following Alexiel's reincarnations for ages. 'Sakuya Kira' was a young boy that almost died in a car accident eleven years ago.

For Kira as Lucifer, head to the Demons sub-page. For the spirit possessing Kira, see Blood Contractor in the Others sub-page.

  • Badass Bookworm: Justified by the original Sakuya Kira's final requests. The first request is that he would like to read a lot and learn about the world. The second is that he should be unlovable to his father, which leads Kira to hanging out with a gang, getting in trouble and often getting in fights.
  • Becoming the Mask: Sakuya Kira died in a car accident when he was seven years old, and the spirit of Alexiel's sword took over his body from that point on. Having friends and a human life -in particular, being friends with Setsuna and having a father who loved him unconditionally- proved cathartic enough to make him truly love his new life.
  • Healing Factor: He can kill minor injuries in the blink of an eye. Larger ones require a bit longer, but aren't much of a problem, either. It's all thanks to the bloodmark on his chest.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Setsuna.
  • Last-Name Basis: Most people, except his father, call him Kira.
  • Pulling Themselves Together: Technically using Rosiel's powers. When Kira makes a homophobic/transphobic comment about Arachne, she loses her temper and slices him into mince-meat with her spiderweb-thread. His body pulls itself back together, and he laughs about it.
Kira: "I hate it when I die."
  • The Reveal: Kira is possessed by a soul following Alexiel's incarnation. And it later is revealed that he was originally a soul sealed in the sword Nanatsusaya Mitama No Tsurugi that had been used by Alexiel in the Great War. It later turns out that he's also the King of Hell Lucifer, former Angel Lucifel.
  • Resurrective Immortality: The bloodmark on his chest allows him to regenerate his body from any injury and even death. It isn't permanent, though, the fact that its power is slowly diminishing and removing his regeneration ability from him is a plot point.

    Yue Kato
Voiced by: Yuji Ueda (Japanese), Tristan Goddard (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kato.png
A schoolmate of Setsuna's and friend of Kira's. He's a known Yankee, bully, drug-dealer and drug-addict. Kato falls victim to being possessed by Rosiel and ends up killed by Alexiel when she possessed Setsuna briefly.

Kato returns as an unwilling sidekick to Setsuna during the Hades chapter, revealing his troubled past and getting saved by Setsuna.

Later appears again as Setsuna's double, now having a temporary body and fighting alongside Setsuna.

Appears again much later, fighting against Lucifer.

  • Abusive Parents: Kato's stepfather hates him because he's the product of an affair. He openly favors his biological daughter, Sae, and beats Kato.
  • Attempted Rape: He tried to rape his sister Sae when she let slip that she knew he was a product of their mother's affair but her father stopped him.
  • Do Not Call Me Yue: Kato hates being referred to by his first name. The only person who does so and isn't reprimanded is Uriel.
  • Go into the Light: The first time Kato dies, he is half-possessed by Rosiel and with a sword wound through his middle. Still, he begs that he doesn't want to die. Alexiel purges Rosiel's cells from him, and she comforts him, showing him the path to the netherworld and telling him to move toward the light. He accepts death with peace, finding blissful comfort in the warmth of that light.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Three in total! He first stabs himself in order to save Setsuna from being killed by the Persona that possessed Kato. His second sacrifice comes shortly after, when he stays behind in Hades after destroying the prison of kept souls, but Uriel saves his soul and gives him a body of his own to possess. His final sacrifice has him holding up the doors to Atziluth for Setsuna to make it through in time and staying behind himself.
  • Last-Name Basis: Because he hates his first name, he expects and only goes by Kato.
  • Meaningful Name: Yue means 'recently departed' a name his stepfather gave him on purpose, in the hope that he would die soon and Kato dies at age 17.
  • They Call Me Mr Tibbs: He initially demands Setsuna to call him either Kato-san or Kato-sempai.
  • The Unfavorite: Kato was obviously ignored and beaten compared to his much more loved sister Sae, especially by her father. He's the product of his mother having an affair.
  • Winged Humanoid: Since he swallowed one of Alexiel's feathers, he can sprout three wings.

    Ruri Saiki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rurisaiki.png

Sara's friend and classmate. She's one of the students who is given the Angel Sanctuary game and helps release Rosiel from his prison. Ruri gets killed by Rosiel and he impersonates her for some time.

  • Dying as Yourself: The angry A.I. that is left of Ruri's consciousness wants nothing but to kill Sara. Sara acknowledges Ruri's pain and offers to submit to being killed if it will ease her friend's suffering. This gesture enables Ruri to let go of the bitterness that's making her crazy, and to admit to Sara how much she loves her, before finally dying for good.
  • Eye Scream: Her eyes got destroyed by several glass shards striking them, causing her to go blind.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: Ruri ditches her glasses after Setsuna mentions that she'd look cute without them. When Rosiel begins to impersonate her, there are never any glasses in sight.
  • Kill and Replace: Her spiritually open nature allows Ruri to survive the ritual to free Rosiel from the Earth. However, once Rosiel is free, he asks permission to absorb her, and he doesn't give her a chance to say no. Her death allows him to replace her entirely.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: She's initially played up as becoming a more important character, but is killed and replaced by Rosiel.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's a very shy girl and uncomfortable about her ability to sense supernatural things because she was often bullied and made fun of.

    Other Humans

Sae Kato

Kato's older sister (by five years).
  • Attempted Rape: If her father hadn't intervened, Kato would have likely raped Sae when she let it slip that she knew he was the product of their mother's affair.
  • The Faceless: Downplayed - some of her facial features are shown (but not her eyes).
  • Happily Married: Kato gets this impression of her when he visits her. (She's unaware of his presence because Assiah is frozen in time.)
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: When Setsuna encourages Kato to visit Sae (who's unaware of his presence because Assiah is frozen in time), she's sewing.
  • Parental Favoritism: It's no secret that her father prefers her to her brother who is the son of another man. Her father even rushes to the hospital from work when he hears there's been an accident - he's relieved that Sae wasn't involved but disappointed that her brother has survived.
  • Satellite Character: She appears only in relation to her brother's troubled life.
