Main Characters

    Amō Shiiba

Amō Shiiba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_amou.png
Voiced by: Gen Satō (Japanese), Ry McKeand (English)
Main mecha: MAILeS YM-02 Kenbu
i-LeS: "Gai"

An antisocial 16-year-old boy who likes to collect parts. His dreary world chases when he meets an autonomous AI, "Gai".

  • Eye Scream: Delivers one of these in "TRYVECTA" to a mercenary sent to kill everyone at the base he's been hiding out at. The look of fear on both the children and the other mercenaries' faces upon doing so is what causes him to become distant and unresponsive to his fellow pilots upon his return.
  • Falling into the Cockpit: Zigzagged. Amou did find Kenbu by accident, but nothing was compelling him to get inside, and the mecha wasn't even working at the time. But after it's fixed, a situation that forces him to pilot it to defend himself does come.
  • Foreshadowing: The first Ending theme has Amou and Gai seemingly sink in water, with the final shot featuring Gashin and Shion standing on the waters surface, their backs turned, before the camera focuses on Amos's shoe floating in the water. This becomes significant given what happens in Episode 13.
  • Heroic BSoD: Amou enters into one after Risa's death, and decides to quit the resistance. It lasts until the next episode where he gains the will to fight. It happens again in Season 2, after he witnesses a caretaker die in front of his eyes and the fear that the children and invading mercenaries have after he shoots one of the latter to death. To the point where upon his return to Yatagarasu, he remains distant to both Gashin and Shion until he's forced to come clean.
  • Hour of Power: To damage AMAIM Ghost as much as possible, Gai removes Kenbu's limiters to allow the AMAIM to fight Ghost with full potential. The removed limiters allowed Amou to move faster and hit harder against Ghost for a good while before Gai reused the limiters to save Kenbu's energy.
  • Jack of All Stats: Kenbu is a balanced mecha that has options for close range, long range, and mobility.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Kenbu's Super Heated Vibrating Straight Sword is a katana that can heat up its blade through high frequency vibrations and slice through metal like butter.
  • Last-Second Chance: Amou offered both of the enemies he and his friends defeated and had at their mercy, the chance to retreat with their lives, one of them was smart enough to accept it, and the other one... got a 50 feet sword stabbing his face courtesy of Amou
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Kenbu has two so far: the Bardiche Breaker and the Super Heated Vibrating Combat Claws. The Bardiche Breaker was a small shield that could parry close range attacks and it had a short knife for thrusting attacks. The Vibrating Combat Claws is the current shield that fully replaces Kenbu's left forearm and gives a wider range of protection as well as having large heat claws for slashing attacks.
  • Nice Guy: Amou has show to be very kind and understanding of others and strives to help them with best efforts.
  • Not Quite Dead The first half ends with him seemingly sacrificing himself to defeat Ghost once and for all. He managed to survive, but it's clear that he's not himself after this incident.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Between him and Gashin, he's the sensitive guy, not accustomed to fighting, and when things go south, he doesn't particularly take it well.
  • Ship Tease: So far he and Shion had a few pretty tender moments together.
  • Sword and Gun: When the situations are serious, Kenbu would wield a submachine gun in one hand and its Straight Sword in the other hand.
  • Taking You with Me: After the team manages to finally hit Ghost's weak point, Amou stands in the way of Ghost reaching the sea water to prevent it from cooling down, after which he seemingly vanished in flames alongside Gai in the resulting blast. After an 8 month disappearance, he manages to pull a Big Damn Hero moment saving Yagatarasu and several refugees from being eliminated by the North American armies.
  • Walking the Earth: Does this in the epilogue along with a rebooted Gai.

    Gashin Tezuka

Gashin Tezuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_gashin.png
Voiced by: Yūto Uemura (Japanese), Patrick Mealey (English)
Main mecha: MAILeS YM-01 Jogun
i-LeS: "Kai"

A calm and blunt 16-year-old boy who is a member of the Yagatarasu. He seeks a mysterious AMAIM known as 'Ghost' to avenge his father.

  • Big Brother Worship: He looks up to his big brother and shows that he cares for him very much. This brother bond is tragically broken when Gashin discovers his brother secretly betrayed Yatagarasu.
  • Cold Sniper: Takes up the role to pick off enemy AMAIMs from a distance when needed.
  • Guns Akimbo: Jogan uses dual Uzi Machine Guns to bombard enemies with rapid fire bullets.
  • Heroic BSoD: Falls into one with Shion after witnessing Amou get blown up with Ghost as the latter overheats.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Underneath his initial brash exterior is a young man who empathizes and cares deeply for those who are in dire need.
  • Mighty Glacier: Jogun isn't the fastest or mobile of the main cast, but it has higher defenses and its 120mm Double Barrel Sniper Cannon makes up for the lack of speed with stronger long ranged shots.
  • Picky Eater: He hates carrots and peppers along with, according to Kai, cucumbers and eggplants.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Plays the Manly Man role between him and Amou. Unlike Amou, he's a fighter who well knows the realities and dangers of the war.
  • Sore Loser: He doesn't take losing to Sion at Shogi and Go well, demanding they play more games well into the night.
  • The Stoic: He's never seen expressing any emotion other than blunt seriousness.
  • Vengeance Denied: As a result of Amou taking out Ghost in a last ditch attempt to stop its rampage, Gashin doesn't get the opportunity to take the AMAIM out. Unlike most examples, Gasshin ends up more worried about Amou's fate than he is about his lack of revenge.

    Shion Shishibe

Shion Shishibe

Voiced by: Kana Ichinose (Japanese), Madeline Dorroh (English)
Main mecha: MAILeS YM-03 Reiki
i-LeS: "Nayuta"

A mature 16-year-old girl who recently joined Yatagarasu. She inherits the trace of her grandfather who was a potter and dreams of the resurrecting "Himeno wares", which was abandoned during the invasion 5 years previously.

  • Establishing Character Moment: Her introduction is her at a pottery wheel, tying into her backstory.
  • Falling into the Cockpit: Implied, as her rather impressive stand against both the Oceanian and Asian forces in Episode 7 was actually her very first sortie.
  • Fragile Speedster: Reiki is the only AMAIM that has true flight, so it can travels in high speeds and this allows Reiki to slash enemy AMAIMs with increased momentum and dodge any attacks with ease. However, if Reiki does get hit, it unfortunately will go down pretty badly. This is seen in the battle against AMAIM Ghost, who uses its wires to throw Reiki down to earth.
  • Friend to All Children: She is very good at caring for children and becomes like a Cool Big Sis for them.
  • Heroic BSoD: Falls into one with Gasshin after witnessing Amou get blown up with Ghost as the latter overheats. And later suffers one when Eiji dies in a battle against the NAC.
  • Hidden Depths: Episode 11 shows that she's very good at strategy board games, easily able to beat Gashin at both Shogi and Go with her eyes closed!
  • Inescapable Net: Reiki has the Electric Capture Net Launcher, which allows it to fire an electric net to disable AMAIMs.
  • Jet Pack: Reiki is the only AMAIM so far who can truly fly thanks to its rear skirt jet pack.
  • Naginatas Are Feminine: She took Naginata lessons as a child and her MAILeS uses one as her main weapon.
  • Nice Girl: Just like Amou, Sion is also shown to be a very outgoing and kind person.
  • Ship Tease: She's very friendly and the most open to Amou, sharing a few joyous moments with him.

    Gai

I-LeS Gai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gai_38.jpg
Voiced by: Natsumi Fujiwara (Japanese), Michelle Marie (English)

Gai is an I-LeS (abbreviated for Intelligence Learning System) who becomes the guiding computer of the YM-02 Kenbu.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's currently unknown how Gai ended up abandoned in the woods of Oceania territory. He doesn't really care how, though, citing how knowing won't change anything.
  • Back from the Dead: A sad variant, in a way. Due to his AI unit being severely damaged, his logic program was the only thing that could be recovered. The original Gai is effectively gone, reverting him to that akin of a newborn baby.
  • Disney Death: Is presumably deleted after the final battle with Brad, but was able to be partially recovered.
  • Giver of Lame Names: He calls a machine design to pierce bedrock the "Laser and Pile Bunker Docking Machine".
  • Hot-Blooded: Quite literally says to Amou that he HAS to roar out the attack name BARDICHE BREEEEEAKEEEER!!!!!, or otherwise the system of the Kenbu won't react.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Gai's hot-blooded personality stems from his caretaker's love for robot and mecha anime, which she incorporated into his training programs.

    Kai

Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa (Japanese) Jackie Lastra (English)

An I-LeS from the same development lineage as Gai. Her data was inherited from the tactical AI used by Gashin's father.

  • Like Father, Like Son: Kai's caring and motherly personality stemmed from her caretaker, who was a mother herself.

    Nayuta

A self-proclaimed Italian gentleman I-LeS who prefers to call himself "Angelo". He has a frivolous mouth, but shows a high degree of loyalty to his partner Shion.

  • Like Father, Like Son: Nayuta's personality stemmed from his caretaker's liking for biographical and historical films, which were incorporated into his own training.

  • Faux Action Girl: Risa rarely fights with the other Yatagarasu fighters.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Is killed off unceremoniously in the opening act of the episode after she was introduced. Her death greatly affects Amō.

    Brad Watt

Brad Watt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_brad_5.png
Voiced by: Yuki Ono
Main mecha: NA12S Brady Hound Custom / Brady Phantom

A captain of the North American forces who takes a special interest in Amō and his AMAIM.

  • Ace Custom: His Brady Hound Custom is different from the rest of the Brady Hounds due to being in blue colors, dual wielding swords instead of combat knives, and it can remote control other Brady Hounds.
  • Ace Pilot: His skills as a Brady Hound pilot are no joke as he is able to think fast and maneuver with ease in battle. His AMAIM even has a system that allows him to manually command his comrades other Brady Hounds via remote linking to create tactical group attacks through his commands.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: In the fourth episode he was able to figure out that Ghost attacked a Yatagarasu camp and was fought by both the Kendu and Jogun from just seeing the aftermath of the battle. He was even able to estimate the combat capabilities of the three machines.
  • Batman Gambit: His method into wanting to take over Japan completely in "Fugitives"? Give Amou and Alexi the keys to escape the hotel they've been forced to stay in under orders, then hunt them down and use their escape as a means to actually start the war on the new alliance's territory. This works to his favor and he and the NAC start planning their attack almost imediately once the two are rescued by their side.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Discussed in "The Battle For Oki Island (Part 2)", where he brings up that no matter what happens to Ghost or the manned AMAIMs, he'll still come out on top. The episode ends with him retrieving Ghost's central AI unit, and plotting to "put it to good use". This is ultimately not the case in execution, as he not only loses Ghost during Kai's Heroic Sacrifice, he ends up injured and dishonorably discharged from the NAC along with his father.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With German, having teamed up to get his hands on Ghost. Eventually German betrays him and starts doing his own thing.
  • Big Bad Slippage: After getting his hands on Ghost, he ends up Slowly Slipping Into Evil and eventually becomes the main antagonist.
  • Blackmail: When facing budget cuts in "TRYVECTA", he manages to get the congressman proposing the cuts to back off by showing him a candid picture of his sexual misconduct. Then letting slip that all of the news outlets would want to "sus" it out, enabling him to start up a partnership.
  • Disney Death: Appears to die in his final battle with Amou after being critically damaged, even going as far as to say he'll take Ghost down with him. However, he is later shown to be hospitalized, with Ghost having ejected him at the last minute.
  • Dual Wielding: His Brady Hound Custom wields two katanas in each hand, which helps him use continuous attacks.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Enjoys living in Tokyo and can't comprehend the fact the autonomy of the Japanese living in NAC soil will be later on just be another form of colonization.
  • Lightning Bruiser: The Brady Hound Custom is a fast AMAIM unit that specializes in both long range and close range combat and it can take a lot of hits and jump straight back into battle. Thanks to Brad being an ace pilot, he lands some pretty good hits on Ghost before it retreated.
  • Remote Body: The Brady Hound Custom has a system that can remote control its ally Brady Hound units for consecutive tactical group attacks. However, the pilots of the Brady Hounds have to patiently wait until their controls are given back and are thus vulnerable to damages to the cockpit.
  • Sanity Slippage: Spends most of the second half becoming more and more corrupted by Ghost, which gets acknowledged by Sofia in "Cooperation Organization". His response to her addressing this to him being an order for her to resign.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: While "villain" might be too much given he hasn't done anything bad yet on screen, he does become extremely interested in Yatagarasu's AMAIM and Ghost.
    • The Stinger of the first season finale has Brad recover the cockpit of the Ghost unit, which survived the blast.
  • Worthy Opponent: He praises how Amō fights in the second episode. And in the fifth episode he claps and laughs when Amō exposes the deeds of the corrupt Asian official.

German Gobert

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

Brenson Corp's sales representative to Yatagarasu.

  • Alliterative Name: German Gobert.
  • Arms Dealer: Provides weapons and gear for the Yatagarasu, including for their AMAIMs. Since the weaponry he provides has proven to be effective, he's shown that he's no joke in the knowledge and development of war machines.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With Brad, having teamed up to get their hands on Ghost. He later breaks off from Brad and begins orchestrating the downfall of all the parties before being caught by Udou and arrested.
  • Freudian Excuse: His reason for selling out soldiers and mercenaries for profit? His parents were killed by those types of people, and has despised them ever since.
  • Wild Card: Gobert seems to be flexible with working for anyone who can provide him the cash in exchange for his weaponry. Yatagarasu is his main customer, but later contacts Brad and the North America Coalition for a future deal. It's revealed in "Reunion" that he left Brenson Corp and started his own company, allied with the NAC, and had his old corporation's buildings destroyed during the Time Skip. It's heavily implied in "Fugitives" that he's only stringing the NAC along for his own, yet to be revealed, means.

Others

    "Ghost"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mecha_ghost.png
"Ghost MK-II"

A mysterious AMAIM that indiscriminately attacks all sides.

  • Achilles' Heel: While Ghost is immensely durable, it overheats quickly due to the lack of limiters. Amou uses this to finally take out the mech upon learning this, though seemingly at the cost of his own.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Played with as it's too early to know for certain. The autonomous AMAIM named Ghost attacks both resistance and the occupying forces, killed Gashin's father, and as of "Separate Ways", Risa was killed by it, too. Amou nearly becomes another statistic after their fight in "Battle of the Oki Islands (Part 2)". In Season 2 it's reveal this is due to it disappearing before any safety limiters were implanted to keep it from going out of control.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Whenever it loses one of its arms, it immediately finds a downed AMAIM to replace it with, adapting to whatever abilities or weapons contained in it.
  • Frankenstein's Monster: It's revealed in "Reunion" that Ghost's AI was developed by Misuzu in an attempt to perfect the programming of AMAIM units, known then as Prototype Zero. Only for it to disappear and remerge as Ghost.
  • Hated by All: At least three armies were attacked by it, and Gashin takes getting revenge on it very seriously when it attacked Yatagarasu fighters. Only the NAC manages to work alongside the AI upon recovering it, and it's mostly due to Brad's influence and interest in the program.
  • The Juggernaut: It's incredibly fast, powerful, and can take immense amounts of punishment even compared to Kenbu and Jogun. It takes Amō and Gashin fighting in perfect synch, along with missile support from the rest of the Resistance, to finally actually damage the thing. And even then it wasn't enough as it tried to immediately, both armless and headless, take out Kenbu and Jogun via a self-destruct maneuver. In "The Hunt", its shown to adapt its fighting strategy when outgunned.
  • Life Drain: Ghost MK-II has the ability to use its wires to drain the energy out of AMAIMs to sustain itself.
  • Made of Iron: Pun aside, the thing is insanely durable, befitting its status as The Juggernaut. In "Battle of the Oki Islands (Part 1)", it survived being blown up in an ammunition depot that destroyed part of a mountain without a scratch!
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: After escaping its first battle against Kenbu and Jogun, Ghost comes back in a stronger form officially known as "AMAIM Ghost MK-II". This new form gives Ghost two Super Heated Claw Arms, two extra Sub-Arms, and six extending wires for controlling AMAIMs or to Life Drain AMAIMs.
  • Mysterious Stranger: Outside of appearance and name, almost nothing is known about the AMAIM, its existence, or its reason for attacking everyone. Let alone who or what, if any, allegiance it pledges to.
    • As of Season 2 with The Reveal that Misuzu was the one who originally developed the AI, the question about its existence has been answered.
  • Not Quite Dead: The first half of the series ends with Brad recovering Ghost's CPU, planning to put it to good use.
  • Remote Body: AMAIM Ghost has a People Puppets variant where its wires can be used to control any AMAIM within its range and it can command the controlled AMAIMs to follow its orders, such as making joint attacks or barrages of gunfire.
  • Use Their Own Weapon Against Them: Has the ability to bypass any security measures used on AMAIM weapons and wield them like if they were its own.
  • You Killed My Father: Killed Gashin's dad some time in the past, making the boy take a personal grudge against the robot.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Due to Amou, Gashin and Shion being tasked to destroy it, Ghost holds nothing back when attacking their AMAIMs and comes close to killing them several times in both "Separate Ways" and "Battle of the Oki Islands (Part 1)".
