    Amraphel

Amraphel/Nimrod

  • Actually, I Am Him: The mysterious "K.N.", whose letters are scattered throughout the Hell, turns out to be King Nimrod, AKA you.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the Bible, Nimrod was a Well-Intentioned Extremist who wanted to be closer to God by building a tower. In Agony, he is an Amnesiac Hero with some sympathetic qualities, although he still was a brutal tyrant during his life.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: Nimrod is often depicted as muscular and strong while in Agony, he is a decrepit old man.
  • Amnesiac Hero: He cannot remember anything before his descent into hell, he even has to learn his own name from another damned soul.
  • And I Must Scream: In the Evil ending, he ends up imprisoned in a demon form, with his arms bound.
  • Biblical Bad Guy: Amraphel is the lesser-known name of Nimrod, the same person who built the Tower of Babel.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He is a damned soul and shares his name with a biblical villain, but is ultimately the hero of the game. Taken even further when the hero becomes the new ruler of Hell.
  • Evil Old Folks: His original form is that of an old king.
  • Expy: Serves as a very twisted one to Dante Alighieri from Dante's Inferno. Both being damned souls who end up in Hell and try desperately to escape. The only difference is that Dante had more sympathetic reasons for entering Hell.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Amraphel goes from a lost soul in Hell to becoming the new ruler of Hell.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Nimrod ruins Babylon with his lust and pride, and releases the Red Goddess and the Beast from Hell to conquer the Earth.

    The Red Goddess

The Red Goddess/Inanna

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Inanna/Ishtar was a benevolent Sumerian goddess of love who also punished the guilty. In Agony, she maintains her Pay Evil unto Evil traits, but is much more sadistic and cruel than her mythological counterpart.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: Inanna was said to be quite beautiful according to the myth while in Agony, she possesses large quantities of Body Horror in her appearance. The only thing that isn’t completely pierced or maimed is her face.
  • Benevolent Boss: Played with. She is usually kind towards her demonic servants despite their deformities, but is cruel towards the damned souls. Not that most of them didn’t deserve it though.
  • Body Horror: Has various nails and rings stuck in her body. Not that this is an issue or causes any sort of pain of course.
  • The Corrupter: She seduced Nimrod to the dark side, making him slaughter his people to sacrifice to her.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: But not exactly the nicest example of this trope. She is the ruler of Hell, but most of the souls she tortured had it coming in some form or another.
  • Expy: Of Lucifer from the Dante’s Inferno game.
    • Appearance wise, she serves as a more malicious one to the female cenobite Deep Throat from the Hellraiser franchise.
  • Jerkass God: A goddess of Hell who rules over the souls of the damned.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She manipulates Amraphel during the course of the game to achieve her own goals.
  • Satanic Archetype: As if her title wasn’t a dead giveaway, The Red Goddess is a ruler of Hell who watches over the souls of the damned and tests their faith through torment.

    Lilith

    Angels

Angels

  • Dark Is Not Evil: They look like monstrous creatures, but are also known for leading human souls to heaven.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Their plans for humanity are unknown, but so far, they seem to be on the side of good.
  • Our Angels Are Different: In contrast with other depictions of angels, these angels look more monstrous in appearance. They look like veiny women with lungs for wings and blindfolds over their eyes.

    The Beast of the Apocalypse

The Beast of the Apocalypse

  • Asshole Victim: He ends up being usurped by the Hero, but its hard to feel sorry for him.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Despite all the major hype he was built up as a force of evil, he was simply a Dumb Muscle who was easy to possess.
  • The Dragon: To Inanna.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In the Evil Ending, he ends up being possessed by Amraphel and causes the portal to the human world to be opened.
