Bait And Switch / MoringMark - TOH Comics

Go To

A lot of MoringMark's humor comes from Bait-and-Switch gags.
  • Thrice Selene does it when Luz and Amity approach her to see the fate of their relationship. It ends up getting on Amity's nerves.
  • After Luz does various dangerous tasks for Malphas to get Amity's job back, he needs her to do one last thing. He describes an act considered evil by many, a heinous deed that will haunt her for the rest of her life... It turns out it's taking a dangerous book from a child and making her cry.
  • When Willow reaches her limit with Boscha's insults, she prepares to get violent with her, with Luz's pleas for her to use her words seemingly falling on deaf ears. Willow draws a spell circle to conjure several vines... which form the words "YOU SUCK", and she somehow manages to intimidate Boscha with it.
  • In one comic, Amity is seemingly begging Luz to stay awake while she's covered in red splotches. Turns out the two were attending La Tomatina in Spain, and Luz was only sleeping because was that she was jet-lagged.
  • A meeting between Alador and Darius seems to be heading in the direction of a duel after they exchange insults, but then they greet each other warmly as it turns out Darius stopped by for a guys' night with Alador while Odalia is stuck watching a sleeping Eberwolf.
  • As the students of Hexside perform love confessions, Boscha waits for someone to approach her. Skara does so...and tells Boscha she sucks.
  • When Luz's Palisman egg starts to hatch, a small pillar of fire in the shape of a phoenix emerges... only for the actual Palisman to be a dodo bird. Luz still thinks it's perfect though.
  • One comic is titled "Amity caught Luz kissing another girl (Emotional)". It's their daughter. The comic was also released on April Fools Day.
  • This comic shows Skara organizing everyone for something they'll only have one chance to accomplish. It's not a mission: it's making sure Eda and Raine's wedding goes off without a hitch.
  • In this comic we see Hunter and Willow seemingly kissing. Turns out she's helping him with makeup to hide the bags under his eyes. This leads to a very annoyed Flapjack when it turns out Clover dragged him all the way over to see for nothing.
  • "Braid" has Willow asking Amity and Hunter if one of them could braid her hair. After four rounds of "Rock, Paper, Scissors", Hunter wins much to Amity's annoyance... then it turns out the winner is the one who would do it.
  • In a comic titled "Raeda Angst", Raine is somberly telling Eda that "They just can't take it anymore" while one panel focuses on their wedding ring, implying their relationship isn't working out. It turns out they were talking about how much their back hurts from sleeping in a nest with Eda, so she builds a combination of her nest and Raine's bed as a compromise.
  • After Jacob injures Masha, Vee seems ready to transform and attack him in her basilisk form. Instead, she tells him to look behind him before hitting him with pepper spray.
  • Luz asks Amity if they could say the "L" word out loud since they haven't said it to each other yet. She agrees, but it's not love; it's "Lumity".
  • Philip and Caleb are arguing while fire surrounds them and Philip's holding a knife. It looks like Philip's about murder his brother, but he's actually just heavily opposed to the idea of serving well-done steak at Evelyn's barbeque.
  • Evelyn is holding her staff and Caleb is holding a pitchfork as if they are about to have a duel, but they ended up making out instead. Caleb explains to his brother that the lipstick marks on his face were bite marks.
  • In a call-back to the first time, Selene shows Luz and Amity the future, and it looks like Luz was about to marry Hunter much to Amity's anger and Luz's confusion. It turns out to be a wedding between Luz and Amity where Hunter was walking Luz down the aisle.
  • When confronted by Odalia in the Archive House, Camila stops Amity from arguing with her ex-mother by saying she'll destroy her with "reason and logic". She then proceeds to beat Odalia up with her bat (reason) and chancla (logic).
Luz: (watching and eating popcorn) My mom gives nicknames to all her stuff.
  • In this comic, Eda asks that the children confronting the Collector cover their ears, as what she's about to say isn't safe for children... and then asks Puppet Raine Belos what her favorite swear word is.
  • When Eda was applying for her own school to run, it seems that Darius along with the ruling council was going to deny her that request due to her criminal records. So Eda grabs the records from him mid-sentence and eats them, saying "What criminal record?". It turns out that Darius was actually going to tell Eda that they were going to be clear all of her records in the first place, prompting a Spit Take from Eda.
  • At the start of their Witch's Duel, Skara questions if Viney can even hurt her given that she's a Healing Track student. Viney proceeds to list all the horrifying ways that healing magic could be used to hurt an opponent... then just has Puddles bodyslam her.
  • After Viney collapses in exhaustion and frustation after being defeated by Skara, Jerbo and Barcus approach her and ask her if she can stand up, not out of concern, but because they don't want to carry her.
  • Vee introduces Hunter to Masha and it seems they instantly hate each other...only to happily comment on each having a tooth gap.
  • Amity would be more than happy to eliminate someone if Luz asks. When it seems like Luz has finally approached her with that request, she's ready to carry it out until...
Luz: Nonono! I just need you to babysit Stringbean tomorrow since Mom, Vee, and I will be going on a day trip.
Amity: [sheepish] Oh, okay, sure. Haha.
  • After Boscha sees Skara make a pinky swear with Viney, she assumes they became friends until Skara explains she agreed to keep the Secret Room of Shortcuts to herself. Boscha seems to forgive her for the misunderstanding, only to assume Skara infiltrated the room so the Banshees could take it for themselves, much to Skara's horror.
  • While Amity is making a home-cooked meal for Camila, the pan catches fire. As Camila finds the fire extinguisher, Amity deals with the fire by hitting it with a blanket, an abomination hammer, and even elbow-dropping it. Once's it's out, Camila says they can try again...only for Amity to lift the blanket and reveal the dish is complete.
  • As Eda shows gratitude for Ayzee temporarily staying with her, she states that the Owl House hasn't been the same since she lost Raine... who then comes in, somewhat offended. What Eda actually meant was that she lost Raine "to their job" as a result them being busy dealing with the political trouble of a potential war with the Titan Trappers.
  • Ayzee tells Eda that she wants to participate in the Fight Coven, just as Eda is sipping from a mug of apple blood. Eda does a Spit Take... because the apple blood is not her usual brand and tastes awful. She then casually gives Ayzee the okay to join in.
