Anguished Declarations of Love in Video Games.

  • AI: The Somnium Files has a particularly sad twist on this. Earlier in the game, Aiba and Date discuss the former's self-destruct command, and the second step is to tell Aiba a lie within a minute of the first command. In the climax of The Resolution Route, Aiba is in the BigBad's eye socket. Said Big Bad has a dear friend of Date's hostage. At Aiba's urging, Date activates the self-destruct to kill the Cyclops Killer, but in order to meet the conditions of Lock 2...
Date: Aiba...I hate you! I hate you, and I never want to see you again!
  • Corpse Party: In the last episode, if you choose to stay in the real world Ayumi will lash out at Yoshiki, leading him to confess his feelings in a loud manner proclaiming "I love you goddammit!"
  • Dragon Age: Origins: Cullen to the female mage. Subverted horribly when he proclaims that he no longer cares that she knows, because the massacre had turned all mages into possible monsters in his eyes. Subsequent games show that part of him does still care.
  • Final Fantasy X: Tidus says "I hate you, dad" in a way that ironically serves this purpose. He just had to fight his father who is now about to die, and he's in absolute tears at the thought of losing the man he once hated so much. In turn, Yuna gives a more conventional love confession to Tidus as he's about to vanish, though this is subverted in the original Japanese as she just says "Thank you."
  • In Fire Emblem: Awakening, Laurent's love declaration to Lucina during their S support has whiffs of this:
Laurent: "You're Chrom's daughter, and in your veins runs the blood of exalts and heroes… So how could a common man such as I ever be worthy of you?"
    • If she's romanced by a male Avatar, Lucina can give him one as well.
  • Knights of the Old Republic:
    • Though the scene occurs before the declaration of love, Bastila's apology for being such a preachy jerk does sound (according to the player character) like she is "pulling teeth".
    • Juhani confessing her love of a female player character has more than an edge of desperation to it.
This may be the last time I will have a chance to talk to you. I just want you to know that I… that I… I… I care for you. I do not know why. I do not know if anything will be possible, or if you even return what I feel, but I do know it is there.
I am sorry if this upsets you. I am so sorry if I am wrong, but I cannot deny what it is that I feel.
    • After The Reveal, Carth's Why Can't I Hate You? speech to the female Player Character turns into one of these. If you take the light side option in the Last-Second Ending Choice before the final battle he reaffirms his feelings for you, but this time it's much less anguished.
  • In one of the many parts cut due to Executive Meddling, Atton Rand in Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords was supposed to face Sion in the end in a player-controlled fight. If he lost, he would die in the Jedi Exile's arms, and if female he'd make one of these.
"Loved you from the moment I first saw you. Thought you were a dream. Meant every word. Tried to play it off as a joke—wasn't funny."
  • The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon: As the world is literally ending around them and the only chance to save it might very well require a Heroic Sacrifice, Cynder chooses to stay with Spyro and admits her love for him as the last words she says in the series. Thankfully, they live to enjoy their Happily Ever After.
  • Life Is Strange: If you choose to Sacrifice Chloe in Episode 5, Max and Chloe will either share an emotional hug, or a passionate kiss depending on whether you kissed Chloe in Episode 3 and how many pro-Chloe choices you've made. Either way, Chloe will say "I'll always love you [...] Max Caulfield — don't you forget about me." Given the context, it could also be considered a Dying Declaration of Love.
  • Persona:
    • In order to romance Naoto in Persona 4, the Protagonist has to perform this.
    • If the player chooses to romance Ann in Persona 5, she makes the deceleration to Joker. Blurting it out as he tries to comforts her after her friend Shiho leaves. While momentarily embarrassed, she quickly declares that she meant it wholeheartedly.
  • In Sands of Destruction, Kyrie makes two to Morte:
    • First, after seeking out Elephas Rex to cure Morte of the curse Serpens Rex put on her, he exclaims how much she means to him while crying Tears of Joy that she survived. Unfortunately, Elephas Rex walks in before she properly responds.
    • Second, in the Valley of Dragons, as he lies dying in her arms from Naja sticking his claws straight through his chest, he tells her again that he loves her. Unfortunately, Morte was once again too preoccupied to properly respond. After resurrecting him, she does accept his feelings.
  • Tales of Berseria: Tragically, Laphicet gives one to Velvet at the end of the game, when she is separated from him. She returns it in a platonic Cool Big Sis sense, but Laphicet's might have meant more than that.
  • Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World: Played with. Marta's love for Emil is well known, even as it changes from infatuation with an idea of him to truly falling for the real Emil. Even so, Marta tearfully shouting while asking if she ever meant anything to Emil in Chapter 8, then burying her head into his chest and telling him she want to be with him might be considered one, even if it's not exactly a confession of love. Emil nervously tells Marta that he loves her, though she cuts him off at the end with a kiss. His confession is not all that anguished, but it does come out during a pretty heartwrenching moment, as it may be the last time the two of them will get a chance to make their feelings for each other known.
  • In Tears to Tiara 2, as her Childhood Friend and slave Daphnis is about to perform a Heroic Sacrifice to give her the chance go escape, Elissa interrupts and throws off her cold-merchant persona with this trope as they prepare to die killing as many slavers as possible.
  • In The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, if Gabe dies in Episode 5, one of the potential ways the conversation could go is Clementine admitting that she thought she would always be alone until she met Gabe, and kisses him. Whether she does so is dependent on whether she went with Jane at the end of Season 2, as the other endings produce different results.
