I love you. - In Chapter 7 of Fallout Equestria: Pink Eyes, Jammed Gun, a guardspony, gives one to a fellow guard Trigger Happy, pleading with her not to throw her life away on finding Puppysmiles. She tells him she's lesbian and departs anyway. However, his declaration won her over, and she returns the sentiment when she survives.
- Hater Good Side Story Swayed Decisions, a Breadwinners and Pickle and Peanut crossover: Sophee admits she mistreated SwaySway because she loves him and she feels left out by him after he meets his new friends.
- Infinity Train: Seeker of Crocus: In the Harvest Moon Car, Goh declares a (platonic) declaration that he always cared for Chloe and everything she did, apologizing for everything he did to hurt her. Take note that he's doing this while he's Talking Down the Suicidal and he's unaware that Chloe is seconds away from getting a dragon demon to cut her head off.
- In Dirty Sympathy, Klavier gives one to Apollo before leaving because he was triggered by Apollo's post-coital talk after Kristoph's arrest.Apollo: If I'm not a one-night stand then stop fucking treating me like one!
Klavier: For a one-night stand, I would not have gone to the Borscht Bowl Club.
- Don't Drink Unlabelled Potions: After stopping Marcy from killing Maddie, Anne apologizes for letting the Love Potion's effects get so severe, blaming herself for not being able to break it.Anne: Marcy, I'm so, so sorry, I should have tried harder. I should have done what I thought I was going to do. I should have said every meaningful thing to you, everything I've ever wanted to say. I failed you. I'm sorry.
Marcy: It’s okay, Anna-banana. I love you, I'm just glad you're here.
Anne: I love you too! I love you so much. I always have. I'm not leaving you. I'm not going to leave you. If you go down, I'm going down with you. I'm here. I always will be.
- In AOT No Requiem, there is a subtle one in Part Two from Historia to Eren. After Eren tells her that it doesn't matter if he dies, Historia slaps him and pleads for him to think of the people who love him.
- Resurrected Memories: In the appropriately titled chapter "The truth is out", Ember accidentally reveals herself to Danny right after sharing a kiss. When he angrily rejects her, feeling betrayed, she begs him not to leave, insisting that she truly has changed, even offering to permanently give up her ghost powers in order to prove herself.
- Tyrantly Ever After:
- When Artina confesses to Valvatorez how his brush with death made her feel, it hews very close to one of these without ever actually stating outright that she loves him. Fenrich clearly interprets it as one.
- Later on, when Artina believes she's about to die at Valvatorez's hands, she finally admits her feelings, but continues to insist that it was never actually possible for them to act upon them.
- The Tamers Forever Series has an unusual example. Unusual in that Takato doesn't actually say it to the object of his affection:Takato: (to Renamon) You can help me protect Rika, and that's the only thing I want...
Renamon: Why?
Takato: What?
Renamon: Why do you want to protect Rika so badly?
Takato: Well, that's... err... well... that's because... ahh... umm...
Renamon: Why do you insist so much in taking care of her, when she only insulted you and humiliated you in the past? Why do you want to be her friend so badly? Why do you smile every time her name is mentioned? Why, Tamer? I don't understand...
Takato: Dammit, Renamon, because I love her!
- Walking in Circles:
- Evelyn confesses to Solas when their Circle’s Annulment happens. She knows that he’ll leave without her, so she just wants to get it out before doing her own part in the rebellion.
- And Solas to Evelyn not much later, when he discovered she has been made Tranquil in an attempt to get her back to him.
- Two years later, Evelyn once again declares her love for Solas after she recovered from the above event out of fear she would relapse again.
- What If Goku Was Female?: Krillin makes one of these to Goku, only for her to completely misunderstand him due to poor wording.
- In Trouble (Rustypaperclip), Butch and Harkness had been tiptoeing and snarking around just what their feelings for each other were. But in Chapter 38, Butch cries over Harkness' seemingly lifeless body, "Babe, wake up. Please."
- i'm giving you a nightcall: Edward was physically and emotionally exhausted from being kidnapped by the new Homunculus Gang, fought his way out and got his automail arm painfully torn off. When Roy asked for an explanation to why he never told him that Edward was Fullmetal, he goes on an angry rant before finally telling Roy that he loves him.
- Son of the Desert: Trisha makes Hohenheim hold her at knife-point, having finally snapped from the pressure caused by her many suitors after she nearly kills one of them on accident. She tells him that she won't let go of the knife unless he admits that he loves her. Otherwise, he must kill her. Hohenheim tearfully admits his feelings.
- In Hunting the Unicorn, Blaine doesn't actually say the magic words for a while, but he does make a huge speech to Kurt in Chapter 9 about getting old together, adopting lots of kids with him, and how having Kurt in his life makes him a better person. The anguished part is that Kurt still wants to go back to McKinley.
- Nick also tells Jeff "I love you" while stoned, drunk, and upset. Thanks to the first two parts, he doesn't remember it until Jeff reminds him a year later.
- With This Ring: After reaching Zamaron and fighting his way to the throne room, Hal Jordan makes a passionate public speech to Carol Ferris to marry him... or at the very least fight off the evil split personality possessing her.Hal Jordan: "Like what you see, Carol? If there's anything of Carol Ferris still left in you, and there has to be, I don't see how you could. Do you remember what you used to see in the mirror, Carol? The face of a compassionate woman? The woman who loved me, and whom I loved in return? I can remember, Carol. I think you can, too. If you can remember her, Carol, I want you to remember how she felt about me. How I felt about her, too. Because I still feel that way, Carol. I want you back. I want to take the real Carol Ferris back home with me, and make her my wife. Failing that... I at least want the real Star Sapphire to take over again. Not the woman I see before me, not somebody who could be a female Hitler, given enough time... but the woman who fought me, at times, but who was never evil. I'm not asking you to do this for me. - In Chapter 35 of Facing Danger, Hermione is still unable to be near anyone male. Everyone but Ron has tried and failed, to be near her. Ron overhears Letha and Danger discussing, and gets rather upset since nobody had talked about it to him. So when (he thinks) she's asleep, he sneaks into her room and starts talking to her.Ron: I'm so sorry. I didn't want you to get hurt. I didn't want anyone to get hurt, but you least of all…
- In If Them's the Rules, Ginny tries to sway Harry into staying by declaring her feelings for him. He rejects hers because he believes himself incapable of romantic love.
- Draco pulls one in My Immortal when confronted by Dumbledore, McGonagall and Snape after getting caught doing it with Ebony in the Forbidden Forest. This somehow results in them getting off scot-free. Later, Hagrid does one as well.
- Gankona, Unnachgiebig, Unità
: Japan gives one after Germany was revealed to be Holy Rome. He thought he didn't have a chance with Italy and fell into despair. Until Italy confessed to him too and they all eventually entered into a polyamorous relationship.
- Much Ado About Shakespeare: Love's Labours Won:
- Declaration of love through Shakespeare's sonnets with much anguish and gayngst. Acting Lieutenant Archie Kennedy gets too enthusiastic and recites poetry to his friend, Lieutenant Horatio Hornblower. They bet that Archie must speak in Shakespeare quotes only for 6 hours and all must be relevant to the situation... He actually checks himself and does not finish the revealing final couplet. Horrified, he runs away and has a panic attack. Archie also thinks he's not good enough for his ace of a friend and he thinks that Horatio still mourns somebody he loved and lost recently. The anguish continues even when he starts to believe that Horatio loves him back because of his troubled past.
- When Horatio finds the sonnet in a book and realizes how it ends [If this be error and upon me proved,/I never writ, nor no man ever loved] and what it means, he wants to confess his love to Archie also. His feelings are anguished as well, mostly because he does not know how to do it properly and how to convince Archie he truly means it. There's also the Navy thing: They will both be court-martialed and hanged if they are ever found out.
- In Some Semblance of Meaning, Kit declares his feelings for Vale's sister Laurel in his interview with Caesar Flickerman, and much later on, Obsidian confesses to Vale after the latter is almost killed by another tribute.
- In It's Not Fair!, Sarah gives one to Jareth after he has transformed into an Unseelie and about to be sentenced to death, in the hopes he will hear her and change back. It works.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
- The Private Diary of Elizabeth Quatermain: When arguing with your love interest about how you knew someone else was faking his affections for her, it's very easy to lose your cool."Because I love you! You think I can't tell the difference?"
- For His Own Sake: Chapter 24 has Motoko confessing to Keitaro how she wishes that he'd look at her the same way he used to look at Naru.
- The Forever Captain series: Howard, declaring that he’s fallen so hard for Maria he’s considering what was previously unthinkable— asking her to marry him.
- kuch adhura sa jo tha (poora ho jayega): Bruno dramatically tells Kamala that he loves her and swears that he didn't become friends with her just because of his attraction to her before she interrupts him and tells him that she reciprocates his love.
- In the first chapter of Bringing Me to Life, Smith does this to Neo who been killed in the real world by a Sentinel. The entire thing, it's quite long, boils down to:Smith: "Neo, Neo, come back. Please, you have to, you can't leave me, I... and I love you!"
- In Le Papillon Rising, Adrien has plenty of these for Marinette.
- Marinette Dupain-Cheng's Spite Playlist: Remix: Adrien makes one right as Marinette is on the verge of being akumatized into Princess Verity, helping pull her back from the Despair Event Horizon. The fact that he pairs it with a Big Damn Kiss certainly helps.
- The One to Make It Stay plays with this during the Oblivio incident. While their memories are erased, Chat Noir realizes that he's in love with his partner, but mistakenly believes that he's never told her, since she seems to be dating somebody else. After Oblivio is defeated, he takes the chance to tell her, though he makes clear that he has no expectation for her to reciprocate, just wanting to get his feelings off his chest. Unfortunately, Alya records the confession and manipulatively edits it to make it appear like a more dramatic confession, with Ladybug seemingly accepting it. This causes all manner of problems.
- Windows of the Soul has a non-romantic example. When Shizuru falls ill with the flu, Natsuki tearfully tells Shizuru that she loves her, and wants her to stop self-harming to punish herself for the things she did during the Carnival."I'm crying," Natsuki said savagely, pulling her head up again. Her face was close to mine, ravaged and angry and sad. "You know that. I've been crying, all this time, on the inside." Another fell. "All for you. So love me, as I love you! At least understand that feeling of mine!"
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
- The Immortal Game: Very strongly implied to have happened between Applejack and Rarity when they thought Titan's mega-storm would wipe them out during the Battle of the Everfree. However, it's hard to say for sure, since the storm made it impossible to actually hear anything, which is rendered in the narrative as them having to lipread, which doesn't really confirm anything for the reader.
- Inner Demons:
- The narration reveals that Rarity does return Spike's feelings for her, but hasn't told him yet because she wants to take things slowly. Then, she ends up having to pull a You Shall Not Pass! on Trixie to give him and Apple Bloom time to escape, and chokes out one of these once he's gone.
Rarity: I love you so much... Spikey... Wikey... (note that she was crying during this)- Rainbow Dash confesses her love to a near-catatonic Pinkie Pie as they're trapped in the burning CMC clubhouse. They survive.
- There's a more straightforward example of the trope when Lezard confesses to having been in love with Apple Bloom since they met.
- Wind Slicer's declaration to Midnight Star in Midnight Star: The Frozen Empire helps her snap out of the spiral she was descending into from utterly defeating the Frozen Empire's leaders.
- Escape From The Hokage's Hat: While trying to comfort Hinata, Naruto accidentally offends her, causing her to snap at him that she cares about him more than he knows. The full meaning of this flies right over his head.
- Played With in OrangeLemon's Sannin Swap. Ino effectively takes Hinata's place during the battle with Pain, revealing her feelings to Sakura in the process. However, she's relatively calm about it, and while she makes a snarky dig about Sakura's failure to respond, when Sakura actually does work her way towards giving her an actual answer, Ino absolutely flips out, panicking over how she's not ready to hear her answer:Sakura: Why are you being all shy? Aren't you the one who was always throwing herself on Sasuke?!
Ino: Because I didn't LOVE HIM! AAAARGHHH STUPID BILLBOARD-BROWED LOSER IDIOT NOT-EVEN-CUTE NERD WHO THINKS SHE'S SOOOO SMART—
- A Crown of Stars: Before the final battle, Shinji tries to talk Asuka into staying behind and safe, but Asuka will have nothing of it:Asuka: "I love you, du verdammt baka! Live or die, you're staying right by my side! Together! You promised!"
- Evangelion 303:
- In Chapter 13 Shinji confessed to Asuka as he was trying to talk her into staying with him. He tried to choose his words carefully because otherwise, she would leave forever.
- In Chapter 14, after months of self-denial, angst, self-recriminations, doubts, fights, separations, and reconciliations, Asuka finally managed to gather her courage and confessing:Asuka: I kinda... love you. ...damn it, I love you!
- Neon Genesis Evangelion R: Asuka does this to Shinji, though he remains unaware due to her speaking in German.
- In The One I Love Is...:
- In Episode 6:Asuka: "It's okay. I can manage on my own. You be happy with Rei… Shinji… I… I love you…"
- In Episode 9:Shinji: "Well, I don't! I don't care! I don't care if you can't pilot those goddamn things again! I love you for who you are, not because you're a pilot!!!"
- In Episode 6:
- In You Are Not At Fault, after Shinji has been nearly killed -again-, Asuka does this:"Quiet, Third!" The redhead brought her hands up to her face, rubbing at her wet eyes with the heels of her hands. The tears refused to stop. "Goddamnit, why is this making me cry? Why do I care so much about you? Why the hell do I love you?!"
Persona Franchise
- Hours 'Verse: When the Phantom Thieves confront Akechi in Mementos, Akira gives him one of these to prove he wasn't lying about caring about him, and it causes Akechi to break down and form the Theatre of Fraud.
- In A Pikachu in Love, Pichi does this at the climax of the fic, though unlike most examples she did rehearse it a little off-screen in hopes if she worded it right, Pikachu would stay with her. Sadly, though Pikachu does admit he loves her too, he already decided his bond with Ash was too strong to break like that...
- In May I Have This Dance?, Weiss has one towards Pyrrha, but it turns out to be for nothing because Pyrrha likes her back.
- In Chapter 16 of Recovery, Weiss lets her feelings for Yang slip when Yang tells her that she shouldn't have bought such an expensive arm prosthetic for a teammate. It backfires when Yang calls Weiss self-centered, especially for her comments against Blake.
- RWBY: Scars: Yang confesses to Weiss after running off after an argument. Weiss tells her she loves her like a sister and that she'll find someone else some day.
- The Greatest of Them All: Silver gives one of these twice in Chapter 15. She makes her first attempt after Peter reveals his Dark Secret, but he interrupts her by revealing that he was 28 when he was sent back and that he's technically married. After seeing Peter's memories, she successfully declares that she loves him, and he reciprocates.(after seeing Peter's memories) "I love you, Peter! You stupid fool! I'll follow you anywhere. To the Ends of the Earth or to a home full of love for you. I love you. I love you. IloveyouIloveyou…"
- The Stargate SG-1 fic "None So Blind" opens with Jack and Sam pursuing a relationship after Jack officially retires, prompting Daniel to make arrangements for a permanent transfer to Atlantis. When Sam comes back from her holiday early and learns about Daniel's planned transfer, she confronts Daniel directly to ask him about his reasons, driving Daniel to admit that he's been in love with her for years and doesn't want to have to deal with seeing her and Jack be happy together when he'd wish it was him every time he saw them.
- The Stargate Atlantis fic "Before and After" sends Elizabeth Weir jumping backwards through time from a time in the future when she was rescued from the Asurans only after suffering serious brain damage, requiring John Sheppard to marry her so that she could stay in Atlantis and receive treatment. As she is travelling back through time, John manages to create a scenario where he can join her even though this puts him at risk of essentially erasing himself from existence if he goes too far back. When Elizabeth initially objects to him putting himself at risk, John declares that he loves her and has always regretted both that he didn't fight harder to get her back and that he didn't have the nerve to tell her how he felt before she was too brain-damaged to understand him, and vows that he won't give up on her this time, leaving Elizabeth overwhelmed at the idea that someone could love her that much.
- And All the Stars Burned Bright gives one to Barbara Havers right before her captain takes off on a suicide mission when he confronts her about why she's been pulling away from him.Barbara: Because I'm in love with you, you bloody idiot!
- Reality Is Fluid: Kanril Eleya has been avoiding getting into a committed relationship with Reshek Gaarra because, despite the fact they've admitted to the attraction privately, it's against Starfleet regulations since she's his direct superior. But at the end of the fic, when they're both in the hospital after his getting half-blown up and her being rather ungently mind-probed by an Undine, she finally has this to say:Eleya: Gaarra, when I heard you were injured, I nearly got myself removed from command trying to come see you.
Gaarra: Well, you’re seeing me now.
Eleya: Yes. Yes, I am. (takes his hand) And I didn’t care. Tess would’ve had me thrown out of the service, and I didn’t care. I had to force myself to care. And now, I don’t have to care anymore. We’re out of danger, and we’re alone and—and I love you, is what I’m trying to say.
- The Heart Trilogy: In the epilogue of Heart of Ashes, Smaug is for the first time in his life feeling remorse and so afraid that Kathryn will deny him her heart because of his evil deeds that he gives a heartfelt speech which he finishes by saying for the first time that he loves her. She agrees to give him a chance after he promises to settle down with her and forget about taking Erebor back.
- In Prayers to Broken Stone, Bilbo delivers one to a gold-sick Thorin when the latter refuses to believe that Bilbo might have a reason to stay with him other than being a spy for Gandalf or wanting Erebor's treasure for himself.Bilbo: Because I love you! I've loved you from the moment you first sang, from the moment I ran out my door after you! I love you, and I almost lost you because of that damned stone, and I am losing you again to this sickness, and I will not be silent and proper a moment longer! It doesn't matter how much I want to leave this place or how frightened I am, because I will never leave you here alone! Do you understand me, Thorin Oakenshield? I will fight for you, and I will stand by your side so long as there is even a shred of hope, and I would stay even if there were none! Not because of a wizard's orders, or for treasure or fame, I am staying for you!
- In The Brilliant Light Of Day: Reimu finally declares that she loves Marisa at the end of the story, right as a brainwashed Marisa is about to fire a Dark Master Spark at her. This results in Marisa snapping out of it and firing it at Seija instead.
- In the AU fic Twist of fate, a blind Jade becomes convinced that Tori (in a wheelchair in this world) has feelings for Beck and runs out of the classroom after listening to Tori and Beck do an emotionally charged scene involving their characters confessing their love for each other. Tori is so determined to correct Jade's assumption that she ends up abandoning her chair and crawling down stairs to catch up to Jade and affirm that she's in love with Jade rather than Beck.
- The main character Attelus Kaltos, in the 40k fanfic Secret War gives one to Elandria during their fight. Although 'love' is never mentioned.Attelus: "Because Elandria. I don't want you to die, it's because I know what you have been through."
I paused trying to swallow back the lump in my throat, "and I know that you never had any choice in the matter, no choice to be what you wanted to be, to do what you wanted to do. That-that any real choice in your life was stolen from you when you were so young a-and you didn't deserve that Elandria, no one does, I-I want you to live so you could one day have your own life to escape this crap, to, to."
My left hand clenched into a tight ball while the right gripped my sword's hilt all the harder, "and that maybe in your new life that I'd be able to be part of it, that I'd like be by your side to help you through I-I."
- Skin (UsagiSquared), Jonouchi's confession scene is considered by some to be so heartfelt that it manages to overshadow the first break in UST for one million four hundred thousand words. The fact that it came directly before his match against Yami no Malik probably didn't help.
- Used during the Walt Disney's Zorro fanfic All the Wasted Time, when Diego reveals his plan to Esperanza to give up the mask so he could marry Anna Maria.Diego de la Vega: (thinking she's in love with a friend of theirs) Go ahead, Esperanza. Say it… Say you love Ricardo and that you understand.
Esperanza Montoya: I don't love him! I love you, Diego… if there's anybody I would spend the rest of my life with, it would be you!
