Anguished Declarations of Love in Comic Books.

  • In ElfQuest, Zhantee very emotionally declares his love for Leetah to Leetah's lifemate Cutter. In the elf culture, love is very free and sex is often shared between friends, and Cutter fails to understand why Zhantee never told them about his feelings. He explains to Zhantee that he'd have been welcome in their relationship all along. Through telepathy, Cutter connects himself and Zhantee to the faraway Leetah, and the three share a powerful romantic and sexual bonding for a few brief moments… until Zhantee dies in Cutter's arms.
  • Something of an unusual case (as they were already having sex) but it's not until he figures he's about to lose her that Mimic confesses his love to Blink in Exiles.
  • In The Legend of Zelda comics, Zelda makes one of these to try to save Link from being hopelessly corrupted by the Triforce of Power in the storyline "The Price". Once he's back to normal, she denies having ever said such a thing.
  • In Mouse Guard: Winter 1152, Saxon finally spits it out during Celanawe's funeral — his experiences in the weasel dungeon made him realize his life of constant battle was meaningless.
  • Paper Girls has a filial love variation where tough girl Mackenzie begs her stepmother Alice not to kill herself, telling her she loves her while calling her "Mom" for what is implied to be the very first time.
  • Pathfinder: Kyra falls fast and hard for Merisiel and works up the courage to make a Love Confession after the elf is wounded by the black dragon in issue 9.
Merisiel: Kyra, why are you crying?
Kyra: I... I feel quite blessed to be part of this group, Merisiel. I was not expecting to travel with others or share their company. But you... your quick wit and your whimsical ways... When I thought you'd been killed by the dragon, I... Something just... broke inside me. I... didn't want to be here without you. In that moment... I couldn't bear it. I needed to save you, to protect you. I couldn't fail you or see you snuffed out from my life... So selfish... The intensity of that scares me. The emotions are too raw. I'm not a young girl who should be infaturated with another in such ways. It isn't fair to you... or fair to me. How would I even—
Merisiel: ("Shut Up" Kiss) Don't cry anymore. These thoughts and feelings are beautiful. I care for you too, Kyra. I want us to be together.
  • Cassidy declares his love with Tulip before and after Jesse dies and after Jesse comes back in Preacher.
  • In the Superman story Superman: Brainiac, Brainiac steals Metropolis and Lois Lane tells Clark she loves him, just in case.
Lois: Clark, if you can hear me... I don't know what's happening, I don't know if this is the end... But if it is... If it is the end — know, please know — how much I lov—
  • Teen Titans:
    • Recently, while Raven was in a coma, Beast Boy confessed that he loved her and always would. Then he went to beat the ever-living crap out of the one who put her in a coma.
    • In Titans (Rebirth) Roy, after years of maintaining his unrequited crush on Donna finally breaks down and declares his feelings for her, despite knowing she is going to turn him down.
  • The Transformers: More than Meets the Eye: After almost sixty issues, Cyclonus rips apart his stoicism in Lost Light #18 to spit it out to Tailgate before he disappears (which he doesn't but still).
Tailgate: You and me, eh? I guess some things were never meant to-
Cyclonus: Shut up. Shut up and let me say this while you're still around to hear it. Because I don't care: real, fake, alive, dead...I love you.
  • Ultimate Marvel:
MJ: Here is what I think… and if I pass out before I finish the sentence it's only because this is the hardest thing I've ever had to say out loud. I don't think he hit on me to hit on me. I don't think that was his master plan. I think he felt how much I love you... and he went for it.
    Peter: Oh.
MJ: We didn't do anything. He tried, but I backed off. I knew—I knew something was off. I knew it was… too good to be true. Now, I would like to go away from you as I am out of embarrassing things to say.
    Peter: Mary…
MJ: Peter, go find your girlfriend.
  • Warlord of Mars had a variation where a villain did this to a heroine when Thurid declared his love to Dejah Thoris and offered her to escape with him, to flee as far away from his other associates. Needless to say, Dejah wasn't impressed by it and slapped him in disgust.
