* AudienceAlienatingEra: Considered to be the nadir of the ''Fallout'' series, at least until ''VideoGame/Fallout76'', due to the glaring contradictions to ''Fallout'' lore and blatant disregard for the series' overall tone and aesthetic.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** If you like metalcore, you're in luck! Fans might enjoy the remixed version of "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wq__tbmdEU My Last Serenade]]" by Music/KillswitchEngage.
** In contrast to [[Music/{{Slipknot}} the rest]] of [[Music/KillswitchEngage the soundtrack]], the main menu theme [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1kEzGs10Zc "A Nuclear Blast"]] is a surprisingly catchy 50's-style swing song, and many fans consider it one of the few good things about the game.
* BizarroEpisode: The ''entire game'' in relation to the ''Fallout'' series - it's more akin to ''[[VideoGame/BaldursGateDarkAlliance Dark Alliance]]'' gameplay wise as opposed to traditional ''Fallout'' [=RPGs=]; the soundtrack, which traditionally consists of [[MisterSandmanSequence 20th century hits]], was replaced with NuMetal and {{Metalcore}}, likely due to wanting to appear more modern; and the iconic Nuka-Cola was replaced with [[ProductPlacement BAWLS Guarana]]. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
* BrokenBase: The game had been near universally despised by fans of the series for years, but after ''VideoGame/Fallout76'' launched in [[ObviousBeta a disastrous state]] and many decisions behind the scenes led to it becoming OvershadowedByControversy, fans have debated whether this game or ''Fallout 76'' is the worse of the two. Some still think this one is worse due to all the changes it made to the series that were largely undone in later entries, but some declared that this one isn't nearly as much of an ObviousBeta as ''Fallout 76''.
* CompleteMonster: [[AxCrazy Jane]], the [[EvilMatriarch Raider Matron]], is [[EvenEvilHasStandards reviled even by the super mutants]] for how much of a violent psychopath she is. Leader of a matriarchal raider gang that virtually controls the town of Carbon, Texas, Jane regularly kidnaps innocent people to [[SlaveryIsASpecialKindOfEvil sell off as slaves]], and lets her men terrorize and murder whomever they want with no restrictions. When the Initiate kills some of her men, Jane orders her men to come upon Carbon and "[[RapePillageAndBurn burn everything that moves, then burn everything that doesn't]]" to teach them a lesson, beginning the slaughter by having an innocent bartender fried to death just for having been a friend to the Initiate.
* CriticalDissonance: Most reviews summarized it as a slightly above-average action game, with most scores reaching 6 or 7. Fans of the ''Fallout'' series, however, hated it due to how far it departed from the franchise.
* FanNickname:
** "Fallout: [=PoS=]" was and is still a somewhat popular one amongst the game's detractors. More recently, "The Burned Game" has gained some popularity.
** Some fans jokingly call this game "The Great Unifier," since virtually every ''Fallout'' fan hates this game, regardless of wherever they otherwise stand within the fanbase's infamously {{Broken Base}}.
* FanonDiscontinuity: The game was disregarded by fans of the ''Fallout'' series well before Creator/{{Bethesda}} [[CanonDiscontinuity made it official]].
* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: This game was not made by Black Isle Studios, the guys behind ''VideoGame/{{Fallout 1}}'' and ''[[VideoGame/{{Fallout 2}} 2]]''. Thus, it was to be expected. The end results came out, only to prove that this was the case. Cancelling ''VideoGame/FalloutVanBuren'' in favor of a sequel to this (which also got cancelled) didn't help its case, either.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The primary criticism leveled against the game is that it didn't fit at all into the established ''Fallout'' style and setting. The Soundtrack in particular has been criticized for switching out the usual Golden Oldies in favor of NuMetal and {{Metalcore}} tracks. Even a fair amount of Fallout fans who happen to be Metalheads themselves disliked this change.
