* SpiritualSuccessor: ''Film/MeanStreets'' was initially conceived as a sequel to this film, and the links between them are obvious. Creator/HarveyKeitel's performances as J.R. here and Charlie in ''Mean Streets'' are nearly identical. The Little Italy milieu is portrayed similarly, with the guys hanging out in dingy clubs and goofing around. And the influence of ''Film/IVitelloni'' is very strong in both films. In fact, it's even stronger here.

You can only cross the Moral Event Horizon once, by definition. It means going from redeemable to irredeemable. There's no such thing as crossing it multiple times.

** J.R. first crosses the line when the Girl reveals her rape backstory only for him to only care about how it affects him. He seems to have a JerkassRealization by the end...only to ultimately cross it again when he states he ''forgives'' her for being raped and then [[KickTheDog cruelly]] states that no one would want her and that she was a whore.

Added DiffLines:

* ValuesResonance: The main male character is shown to be fully and without a doubt in the wrong for SlutShaming a rape victim. And remember, this movie was made in the 1960s.
* TheWoobie: The Girl. She was raped by a previous boyfriend and when she reveals such a hard past to J.R., he only cares about how the rape makes him feel and them crosses the MoralEventHorizon when he states that she'll be DefiledForever. The poor woman needs a hug.

* {{Padding}}: After gaining some good reviews at film festivals in its initial cut under the title ''I Call First'', a distributor offered Creator/MartinScorsese a deal on one condition: he had to add an explicit sex scene. So Scorsese and Creator/HarveyKeitel flew to Amsterdam and shot an artsy fantasy sequence where J.R. and a woman make love, mostly nude, set to "[[Music/TheDoors The End]]". The style and tone clash with the rest of the film, Keitel is obviously a few years older than in the other scenes, and its placement is rather odd, coming in the middle of the scene where J.R. talks about "broads" versus "girls". Versions that circulated in TheEighties and TheNineties didn't include the new scene, but it's in the Scorsese-approved DVD print.
