* MainstreamObscurity: Brainiac was so ubiquitous and popular in the Silver Age that his name became slang for intellectual and introduced a word in the cultural lexicon, but his cross-media appearances has prevented him from being as famous as other villains. He has yet to appear in a single Live-Action film version of Superman (which have had Lex Luthor and General Zod taking turns as the main villain for seven films now) and his most well known appearance, the Franchise/{{DCAU}} take, is different enough from his comics that they make newcomers confused about the two versions.

* SalvagedStory: This arc served to resolve the various contradictory appearances of Brainiac in Post-crisis continuity by by streamlining them into proxies of the real Brainiac, while returning him to his Silver Age roots as a [[PlanetLooters Planet Looter]] who collects bottled cities including Kandor.

Nitpicking. Skulls are a classic horror element due to invoking the Uncanny Valley.

* NightmareRetardant: Space-ships shaped like skulls. Still, skull-shaped ships in a Brainiac story must be due to the GrandfatherClause.

Misuse, describes events that preceded this work.

* HarsherInHindsight:
** All those Post-Crisis stories in where Superman fought Brainiac? They were mere probes. The real, incredibly dangerous thing was looking for him.
** Scenes in which Clark and his mother kept Pa Kent from using the coffeemaker or straining himself used to be funny. Try to laugh after reading any of them now.

!!The character
* AdaptationDisplacement: Most people who know about Brainiac are more familiar with his evil AI incarnation from [[WesternAnimation/SupermanTheAnimatedSeries the cartoon]] than they are with the earlier comic book incarnations. This is most likely the reason it has become a frequent RetCanon.
* CompleteMonster: See [[Sandbox/CMIncarnationsPerCharacter here]].
* CantUnhearIt: Creator/CoreyBurton's voice for Brainiac in the Franchise/{{DCAU}} is what most fans tend to hear in their heads when reading his lines.
* EvilIsCool: Naturally. Brainiac has consistently been a threat to Superman across the decades no matter how strong the Man of Steel becomes.
* FashionVictimVillain: On the cover to "The Super-Duel in Space" he's wearing [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/3a/Action_Comics_242.png/170px-Action_Comics_242.png a pink legless unitard]]. It is not flattering. There's a reason most of his revisions, such as the page image, at least include pants. Because he really does [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r98uVJW7pYk just want a decent pair of pants.]]
* LoveToHate: Comicbook/{{Brainiac}} is one of the few villains who can go toe to toe with the Man of Steel. His cold desire for Knowledge at any cost and status as the thematic EvilCounterpart to Comicbook/{{Superman}} make him one of the most well liked members of the Superman RoguesGallery.

Not a trope, it's a game that should only be on sugar wiki

* AwesomeArt: Gary Frank's art is excellent. It's noteworthy that "his" Franchise/{{Superman}} and ComicBook/LoisLane really look like Creator/ChristopherReeve and Creator/MargotKidder, and "his" Comicbook/{{Supergirl}} like Creator/LauraVandervoort.
* BetterThanItSounds: An old man likes collecting lifelike mockups.
