* AudienceAlienatingEra: The latter half of the Platform/PlayStation3 generation. After the beloved Ratchet & Clank Future saga wrapped up in 2009, the next game in the series was All 4 One in 2011, a top-down four player co-op adventure with a vastly de-emphasized story, followed the next year by Full Frontal Assault, a smaller digital-focused game with third-person tower defense gameplay and even less story. Sales and fan attention dwindled to the point that the next traditional game, 2013's Into the Nexus, was a shorter-length budget title, which didn't make any sort of splash and relegated the franchise as washed-up with far too many releases that nobody asked for. It wouldn't be until the PS4 game based on the movie came out in 2016 that the series saw an uptick: the public were reminded of how great a traditional Ratchet & Clank can play and look despite being a slightly cheaper release, setting the stage for VideoGame/RatchetAndClankRiftApart to knock it out of the park in 2021 at the start of the Platform/PlayStation5's life.

* CharacterPerceptionEvolution:
** When the original Ratchet & Clank came out, Ratchet was seen as too much of a Jerkass prick to be likeable, coming across as UnintentionallyUnsympathetic and a DesignatedHero at the worst of times, with enough complaints that they had a direct impact on his characterization in subsequent games. When the [=PS4=] reimagining and movie were announced, many hoped they would smooth out the arc and execute it better, making Ratchet still kind of a jerk but not so much that his eventual redemption didn't feel unearned. These people ended up disappointed when the duology instead made Ratchet into a dorky NiceGuy who doesn't even resemble the character he became in Going Commando, let alone what he was like in the first game. These days, [=RAC1=] Ratchet is looked upon much more fondly, as a guy with Revenge an obvious character flaw who learns the error of his ways and gets on his way to becoming a real hero by the third act.
** When Mr. Zurkon debuted in Tools of Destruction as a Combat Device, he became an immediate EnsembleDarkhorse due to his hammy nature and dialogue being reminiscient of Website/ChuckNorrisFacts at a point when that meme was in its prime. After sitting out Quest for Booty, he would be in all five of the subsequent games over the course of seven years, which included all of the AudienceAlienatingEra (All 4 One, Full Frontal Assault, and Into the Nexus). As a result of that, his popularity stagnated and he became more of a BaseBreakingCharacter, with some thinking he's worn out his welcome and dialogue and should stop appearing, and others thinking that the attempts to keep him fresh (alternate dialogue when summoned by other characters, introducing his wife and son, introducing Evil Zurkon, etc.) have succeeded and shown he still has life in him.

* ContestedSequel: There is a minority of fans who discount Deadlocked, Going Mobile, Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, Quest for Booty and All 4 One as being "real" Ratchet & Clank games, which can become confusing when they insist on referring to the game by numbers (e.g. "the fourth game" could variously apply to Deadlocked, Size Matters or Tools of Destruction depending on whether you're talking to someone who accepts all the games, only the platformers, or only the main console games). And then we've got [=All-4-One=] and Full Frontal Assault, due to their gaming style.

** The increase in people talking to you during gameplay. In the first two games it was mainly the [=HelpDesk=] and a few unique circumstances (such as the Nebula warship self-destruct sequence or the ship battle against Qwark in the first game, or the AnnouncerChatter in arenas and BossBanter with the Thug Leader in GC). UYA would be the first game where allies near (like the Galactic Ranger bots) and far (like the Starship Phoenix crew and Slim Cognito) would regularly talk with you, while the Future games on [=PS3=] would introduce Ratchet and Clank bantering regularly, but this provided everyone involved with more time to show their characters, while the Rangers were outright Ensemble Darkhorses with lots of humorous dialogue. [=A4O=] would introduce callouts done during gameplay, along with a constant MissionControl, but this was still justifiable in that the chaotic nature of multiplayer made the callouts helpful to keep track of everything, while the change in gameplay structure gave lots of time to give exposition during down beats. [=ItN=] would be the first single-player game to contain the banter of the eponymous duo, the callouts, and multiple people (like Talwyn, the Smuggler and Vendra Prog) in contact with you, but this title was overlooked due to releasing the same day as the [=PS4=]. By the time of RAC 2016, however, all of this came together in the first title to get the series back into the mainstream after its AudienceAlienatingEra. The dialogue had increased to a point where you were unlikely to go even 20 seconds without someone interrupting, while most of the new characters were either Annoying Video Game Helpers, lacked the charm and/or humor of earlier characters, or had bad line readings -- and in the worst cases (such as Cora Verolux), all of these at once.

* TheWoobie: Ratchet can be considered one when you learn the depth of his backstory. In the first game, he's an orphan living in a garage, trying to build a ship to go on an adventure, and admires Captain Qwark . The third game reveals that the galaxy only sees him as a sidekick to Clank due to a TV show they both star in . And in Tools of Destruction, we learn that Ratchet is . And as of A Crack in Time [[spoiler:only Angela. Plus his best friend is missing for most of the game and very nearly abandons him to care for the Great Clock (Luckily he doesn't)]].

** Whether or not the series shifitng its focus away from satire to dramaedy was for the better or not. Supporters love the addtions to lore and character develoment and feel that the satire well was begging to dry. Detractors however find the stories of the [=PS3=] games onward to be Narm-filled and betrays the series' core becoming the kind of franchise earlier games mocked.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: The first game, while still well loved, tends to suffer from this. While it was a groundbreaking platformer for it's day, its graphics are really showing their age now, and the substantial amount of EarlyInstallmentWeirdness compared to the numerous sequels almost make it feel like a game from a completely different series.

** Drek from the first game. Although he's a CorruptCorporateExecutive and an all around scumbag, the fact he proves to be a legitimately threatening and competent villain (with a challenge boss fight to boot) has made him one of the franchise's most fondly remembered villains. His more bumbling take in the 2016 reboot was a sore spot for many fans.

* TheScrappy:
** Helga may count. She is mostly saying she can do better than Ratchet on fitness courses, though we don't see her do anything but yap all the time.
** Ratchet himself was this in the first game, due to his massive Jerkass personality, and his cruel treatment towards Clank, who was only being nice to him. By the game's end he learns the error of his ways, and is much less abrasive in future games.
** The villains of Size Matters, , are considered forgettable villains. The former is a narmy rehash of Chairman Drek with some elements of Gleeman Vox, and the latter is infamous for being ThatOneBoss and a PlotTwist gone wrong.
** The Y.E.T.I.s from Going Commando, due to having enough health that even a lot of the strongest guns in the game take a while to kill them, being absurdly strong, and spawning constantly. Even the developer, Insomniac, admitted they were one of the worst elements of the game, and give a "Snowbeast Award" named after the creature to the person who made the worst feature of a game after release.

Even if one chooses to exclude those, that still leaves eight games to play. And that's not even getting into the movie and the comic series. Basically, someone who wants to get into the series will have their work cut out for them.

Baleful Polymorph was renamed per TRS

** Up Your Arsenal has also vid-comics and five time-related skill points, one for speedrunning each. The first ones aren't that hard, but the limit for the last one is so tight it you might want to use a Quack-O-Ray on whoever set the time requirement on it.

Were Still Relevant Dammit is not a trope anymore

** The series' slide towards the LighterAndSofter and DenserAndWackier, eventually culminating in WereStillRelevantDammit. As early as the second game (Going Commando), Ratchet had gone from a brash headstrong teenager to a professional and well-meaning gun-for-hire well on his way to becoming a ScienceHero, while as early as the third game (Up Your Arsenal) the game's themes of consumerism and corporate cynism were being replaced by a TuxedoAndMartini plot involving a classical MadScientist, and A Crack in Time had alien races explicitly according to a video in the Insomniac Museum based off high school cliques. The thing is... Ratchet's new character in GC felt like a natural extension of his CharacterDevelopment, UYA[='s=] villain became an EnsembleDarkhorse with fans and creators alike, and [=ACiT=] is often considered a high point for the franchise on the basis of its story (and when it's not, UYA or GC often are, in its stead). In short, the problems that eventually manifested as Sequelitis were not only present and not considered problems, but actively applauded in the earlier games, and only started irritating fans later once the games started running out of steam.

* NoRomanticResolution: Arguably with every main female character in the series - Ratchet and Clank are both shown to have numerous love interests who vanish between games and are almost never brought up following titles afterwards. Not only are several of these characters beloved in their own right, but some characters - such as Angela - should have had a larger stake in the plot
