** Oumouri, someone who Lorenzo recognizes from back when the family was in the Comoro Islands, is brought to America by the Odone family to help. It is hinted that Michaela wasn't entirely honest with her description of Lorenzo's condition ("he is very sick and needs a friend"). When Oumouri sees Lorenzo in his current state, he slowly and calmly approaches and starts singing to him, still seeing him as the young boy he met years ago. Maduka Steady's performance is all in his eyes; shock, almost horror, then great grief, then tenderness. (The real Oumouri Hassane did come to help the family, and cared for Lorenzo until his death in 2008.)
** After months of fearing and dreading more bad news about Lorenzo's conditions, it can move someone to tears to see Augusto finally receive good news about Lorenzo from the doctor: their experimental oil proved effective. Just to see everyone in the room rejoice from the news in wonderful.
** After proving that the oil works, Augusto and Michaela give the rest of the oil to Wendy for Jake, partly to see how it works on him as well, but most likely because Wendy has proven to be a true friend to them. When Wendy tried to help cover part of the oil expenses, Augusto humbly declines and merely asks for her produce in return.

When Wendy visits and her son Jake's symptoms are starting to worsen, Wendy confides in Michaela that Jake knows -- "he saw the way Jaybird went" -- and breaks down.
