** Hunters are armed with shotguns and can usually be found in groups. It is all but required to kill them from practically the other side of the screen otherwise they'll make short work of you.
** Naturally, the SWAT teams and US soldiers, due to their armor which makes them harder to take down and their strong assault weapons. It becomes very frustrating when they surround you in open areas.
* HypeBacklash: Many people who were actually looking forward to the game due to the fuss it created early in development might have suffered from this due to the game in itself being [[SoOKItsAverage mostly average in terms of presentation and gameplay.]] For most, the game does not seem any more graphic as your typical violent video game, and as a result does not live up to the hype generated by its "AO" rating and the controversy the whole game created beforehand.

* NoSuchThingAsBadPublicity: The creator's response to the InternetBackdraft above. Seeing as the game's trailer has received much attention from gaming websites and reaction videos on YouTube due to its content. It eventually worked, as despite the mixed reception, the game became one of Steam's topsellers.

** Also, despite the cameras being really far, the close ups and the models are really detailed, bonus point for averting the NoFlowInCGI with Not Important [[BarbarianLongHair hair]] and BadassLongcoat
* TheWoobie: Any and every civilian that Not Important guns down, especially the ones that he execute. It pretty much rubs in the YouBastard aspect of the game.

* DeaderThanDisco: This game was a massive hit, saleswise, at its release... but that was entirely due to the controversy. Once it was clear that the game wasn't that good ''and'' not nearly as brutal as the ads promised, it completely vanished from discussion (save for appearing on a few "Worst of the Year" lists).

* ForbiddenFruit: Many people bought the game not because they were interested in the gameplay or premise, but because they wanted to spite the MoralGuardians trying to get the game banned.

** HisNameReallyIsBarKeep: Some believe his canonical name actually ''is'' "Not Important."

** One gamer on YouTube said that the game is so over the top and the fact that you're unable to take Not Important seriously makes the game's premise less horrible.

* CompleteMonster: [[VillainProtagonist The Crusader]] (aka "[[AscendedFanon Not Important]]") is a rare case of the PlayerCharacter qualifying as an example, due to [[ButThouMust there not being]] an [[CrueltyIsTheOnlyOption alternate path]]. He is a [[AxCrazy psychotic]] everyman whose [[MisanthropeSupreme disgust for the human race]] and [[DeathSeeker desire to die violently]] drive him to commit a "[[OmnicidalManiac genocide crusade]]." Starting off by killing a drugged hostage in his basement, he then goes on a shooting spree and [[KillEmAll kills hundreds of innocent civilians]] and [[CopKiller cops]] while enacting his plan to go to a nuclear power plant and [[NukeEm cause a meltdown]]. After planting some explosives at the power plant, he is shot and mortally wounded by some soldiers. With his dying breath, he detonates the explosives, killing himself and causing a chain reaction which [[TakingYouWithMe destroys the entire city]].

* CrossesTheLineTwice: And stomps on it, breaks it limbs, sets it on fire, eats the ashes, and then makes a nihilistic statement on the futility of the human race.
** One of the harshest [[CriticalDissonance criticisms]] of the game is that the actual ''game''play ironically doesn't cross the line as many times as the trailer did. For example, most of the executions consist of Not Important simply shooting or stabbing the victim once or twice, then the victim rolling over dead with nary a fuss.

One might think a game that's about playing as a brutal mass murderer who is tasked to kill innocent civilians and anyone else in his path would be a pretty hard sell for many people, but that didn't stop the game reaching the #1 spot on Steam within a few hours.

* [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot They Wasted A Perfectly Good Premise]]: After the ad campaigns and controversy focused on going on a rampage, gunning down the innocent... that's basically the first level, and then you fight cops and soldiers for the rest of it. If they were going to do it, they might as well have gone all the way, instead of nosediving straight into territory that stopped being controversial after the first ''GTA'' game came out.

** There are gamers who consider this game to be '''[[EveryoneHasStandards too violent]]''' to play. However, just as many people have been defending the game citing games like ''Franchise/MortalKombat'', ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAuto'', and ''VideoGame/{{Postal}}'' as being just as violent as this.

** The whole debate of whether or not this game is just too ''stupid'' to exist. People say it's perfectly fine to have something to take their frustration out on, while others cite perfectly adequate examples that already exist (''VideoGame/ScientistSlaughterhouse'', for example), and actually being projected as being hilarious rather than how ''Hatred'' plays it pointlessly straight.
