* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: Many of the tropes used in this episode were already done in Twelve's more memorable episodes, such as "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS35E8TheZygonInversion The Zygon Inversion]]", "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS35E10FaceTheRaven Face the Raven]]", and even the immediately-preceding "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS36E9EmpressOfMars Empress of Mars]]". Likely because of that, critical and audience reactions were tepid, with a general consensus of "solidly executed, but nothing special", while overnight viewing figures stand at 2.89 million, the lowest in the show's fifty-year history. (It has been theorized that this episode was originally intended for an earlier point in Series 10 -- most likely between "Knock Knock" and "Oxygen" -- but moved forward to allow more downtime between the angsty Monks Trilogy and the devastating SeasonFinale two-parter than just "Empress of Mars" would have provided.)

* SoOkayItsAverage: While the episode isn't considered the worst of Series 10, it is far from the best. What doesn't help is that not much stands out about it.

What doesn't help is that not much stands out about it.it ''and'' it comes right after the similarly-themed "Empress of Mars". Fans of the Classic Series tend to like it more than New Series-only fans do -- not surprising given that Rona Munro actually wrote a Classic Series script, "Survival".

Whoops, forgot that the trope isn't actually YMMV. Moving to the main page.

* SciFiWritersHaveNoSenseOfScale: The exact time dilation caused by the portal is unclear, but it's unlikely that the soldiers would be able to hold the gate for long. It's estimated that it would take anywhere from three hours to a week to bring them up to the present day. Assuming they don't get instantly swarmed and can still face the monsters one at a time, that would still be a difficult task. And they plan to hold the gate until the sun dies, which is simply impossible—even in the best case scenario, they would need to last over nine and a half thousand years in order to reach the year five billion (which is the estimated time the sun will burn out).

TV makes it hard to judge time, so we have to go by what the Doctor said: A few minutes of fighting gives the outside world sixty to seventy years. To keep the math simple, let's say one minute inside equals ten years outside. That means to last 1800 years to the present day, they'd only need to last three hours. Still doubtful they'd make it to the sun burning out, though.

* SoOkayItsAverage: While the episode isn't considered the worst of Series 10, it is far from the best. What doesn't help is that not much stands out about it.
* SciFiWritersHaveNoSenseOfScale: Assuming the remnants of the Ninth Legion aren't swarmed by more than one Beast once they're in the portal, the time-dilation doesn't help that much. If a few seconds of time are equivalent to a few days, the small number of troops need to survive in a hostile environment for about 6 minutes per year of time they give the Earth. They'd have to last up to a week to have the Earth survive to the present day... which doesn't seem likely, given their effectivness.

* ItsTheSameSoItSucks: Stop us if you've heard this one before: the Doctor traipses off to a historical period where a famous real-life event happened, finds an alien monster causing havoc, splits up with his companion so they can each find the two halves of the plot, and are then reunited so the Doctor can give a grand speech goading the guest stars into putting aside their petty differences and saving the day. Both critical and audience reactions were tepid, with a general consensus of "solidly executed, but nothing special"; overnight viewing figures stand at 2.89 million, the absolute worst of the show's fifty-year history (yes, including the Colin Baker era); and in an age when ''Doctor Who'' episodes have [=YMMV=] pages pop up immediately after airing--if not weeks in advance--so fans can gush or vent about the episode, this Recap lacked a [=YMMV=] page until four days after its airdate, and even then the [=YMMV=] page was created for an ItsTheSameSoItSucks entry pointing out the Recap had no [=YMMV=] page.
