* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: Their first album, which (despite being their best-selling release) is frequently written off by modern critics as a standard nu-metal album that borrows elements from other more popular bands. In reality, Coal Chamber's sound on that album is one they had maintained since their formation, and many of the songs appearing on that album were originally featured in early live performances and on demo tapes which predate almost all of the bands to which they've been compared.
** This is unfortunately not helped by the fact that TroubledProduction played a large role in their debut full-length not releasing until 1997, by which point other early [[TropeCodifier codifiers]] of the genre had already begun their rise.

* {{Narm}}: The lyrics were always a bit melodramatic and occasionally underwritten, but "Tyler's Song" is the apex. It's well-intentioned - it's about the ideals Dez wanted for his son after a divorce - but the lyrics are so dorky and preachy it's hard to take the song seriously.

* BrokenBase: Is ''Dark Days'' their most uninspired album, after which their breakup was unsurprising? Or is it their [[DarkerAndEdgier hardest]] and most underrated album?
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Despite having long retired from music as a whole, Rayna Foss is the most remembered bass player of the three that passed through their ranks, and the second most recognized member overall after, obviously, Dez. She was so iconic to the band that when she was reported missing at the beginning of 2022, old nu-metal fans went into a panic before it was [[https://metalinsider.net/updates/update-rayna-foss-daughter-issues-statement-assuring-her-mothers-not-missing clarified]] the next day that Foss was alive and well.
