Since he shows up in Gary's other stories, and Mary Beth and Weeds do not, it's not hard to imagine that he found a way to escape and left them to be trapped forever.
* ItWasHisSled: This episode is famous for its DownerEnding, where the protagonists fail to prevent the invasion and end up trapped in a crystal ball forever.
