Maybe [[ParentalObliviousness they didn't know]], but it seemed far too obvious to be held out for so long. Also, after watching the movie, and knowing the sad truth of how much [[BreakTheCutie crap he had to go through]], [[TearJerker/EdEddNEddy it can be hard to watch earlier episodes]], where he was awfully humiliated ("To Sir With Ed" comes to mind...). If he hadn't had Ed and Edd as his friends all this time, Eddy would be one of the biggest, and saddest, mental wrecks in the history of animation, enough to give [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Shinji Ikari]] a run for his money.]]

** In fact, all three of them [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation could]] fall into the Jerkass Woobie category. Yes, they are temperamental, possessive, rude and unhygienic, but there have been moments that show they DO care for each other. They have barely any physical traits in common and it's heavily implied their mother ReallyGetsAround and they have three different dads who aren't around anymore, so as such they latched on to the Eds because that's all they know how to do. Notably, after spending most of the series violently pursuing them, the Movie shows them actually doing their best to protect the Eds from the wrath of the rest of the cul-de-sac; it can be inferred that dubious ways of going about it, they do genuinely have feelings for the Eds. Ironically enough, their first appearance ("Nagged to Ed") didn't portray them very negatively, as while they did scare the hell out of the Eds and exchanged their clothes with their dads' robes, they at least showed genuine care and kindness towards the Eds, without trying to make them ''too'' uncomfortable (NOTHING compared to [[ItAmusedMe what they do later on]] in the series).

* Ed has to put up with his little sister's crap. He also has to deal with a father who doesn't give a care about him, and a [[AbusiveParents mother]] who spoils said little sister rotten while treating Ed like crap. Not only that, but despite Ed being clearly too dumb to tell the difference between right and wrong, his mother still punishes him just for being too loyal a friend to not go along with Eddy's scams. Meanwhile, she lets [[JerkAss Sarah]], who routinely beats up other kids, including Ed himself, get off [[KarmaHoudini scot free]].
* Edd, compared to the other two Eds, is polite, meek and sensitive, but [[NoRespectGuy usually suffers no less]]. Although his parents seem to be relatively normal, they're never there for him, communicating exclusively through sticky notes and leaving him to do all the houserwork while they're off doing their jobs, presumably. He is also often given penalties along with Ed and Eddy, even if he hasn't done a damn thing to deserve it!
