Based on a genie-in-a-bottle story retelling by Chris Appelhans (who also directed the film). Din (Creator/JimmyWong), a working-class college student with big dreams but small means, and Long (Creator/JohnCho), a cynical but all-powerful dragon capable of granting wishes, set off on a hilarious adventure through modern-day Shanghai so Din can reconnect with his now-famous, childhood friend, Li Na (Creator/NatashaLiuBordizzo). Their journey forces them to answer some of life’s biggest questions – because when you can wish for anything, you have to decide what really matters.

The trope is for when parents are full on abusive and fail to be the protectors of their child. That's not what's shown in the film where Mrs Song, Din's mother, is shown to be comically frenzied when she learns that Din has been skipping school and acting weird because of Long. However, it's shown that she acts this way because she fears he's throwing away his chance to get out of their old, rundown shikumen by going to college. Slapping her son with rolled up homework papers is not abusive, it causes no trauma to Din, and there are numerous times in the film where Mrs. Song makes her intentions clear that she cares for Din and is worried about him. This trope is not in play.

* AbusiveParents: Din's mom beats him for not doing well in his classes and for acting increasingly weird after discovering Long.

This entry is such a good example of symbolism that it's a shame to keep it behind spoiler tags. Revising the example to focus on the symbolism of the son's death without providing the spoiler details that Long and his son were human.

* {{Symbolism}}: As a child, Li-Na used to wear her hair in a ponytail, reflecting her child-like innocence as well as her adventurous tomboy attitude. Later, when she and Din are running from the bad guys, Li-Na putting her hair up to psych herself for a fight shows [[HesBack she never quite lost her tomboyish spirit]].
