This really isn't a background event if a character from the foreground interacts with someone in the background to create the funny event.

* FunnyBackgroundEvent: During the traffic jam scene, Long grabs a nearby motorist's hand and angrily forces him to honk the horn several times. The poor guy spends the next 15 seconds staring at his hand in confusion.

** Din's mother has shades of this. She's strict, assumes the worst on why Din is being secretive, and overbearing about how he needs to focus on his studies. But for the most part, she's also a caring mother whose strictness is actually a mixture of AngerBornOfWorry and ToughLove.

There's definitely a thread running between the two "peasant boy" comments that shows character growth in Long. However, Book Ends is a visual trope where there are two very similar scenes that occur at the beginning and end to show that things have changed (or that nothing changed). There's no visual element here, it's more of a affectionate callback.

* BookEnds: When Long and Din first meet, the former derisively acknowledges the latter as a "peasant boy". The very last time they encounter each other, Long facetiously jokes "Oh look, a peasant boy."

I think this falls under Fridge Brilliance

*** Building on that, Din has a difficult time coming up with something to say to Li-Na after all this time without coming off as disingenuine or creepy. It's only once Din's suit falls apart that he's able to form a genuine speech for Li-Na about how he misses her and still cherishes their childhood bond. Based on a genie-in-a-bottle story retelling by Chris Appelhans (who also directed the film). Din, a working-class college student with big dreams but small means, and Long, a cynical but all-powerful dragon capable of granting wishes, set off on a hilarious adventure through modern-day Shanghai so Din can reconnect with his now-famous, childhood friend, Li Na. Their journey forces them to answer some of life’s biggest questions – because when you can wish for anything, you have to decide what really matters.
