** The reason you respawn when you GameOver is that Tama has multiple lives, and she sacrifices one of them to rewind time a little to before the battle and bring you back to safety. However, the process tires her out and she mentions she may need to rest a bit afterwards. Getting a Game Over never has any effect on Tama's performance in battle even if you immediately jump back through the gate and battle the boss that just killed you.
