* LimitBreak: After filling his Ubercharge meter, the Medic can unleash a devastating attack where he and one teammate are invincible (or, with the Kritzkrieg, have unlimited {{Critical Hit}}s) for ten seconds. The soldier's backpack-type weapons work in a similiar fashions: the Buff Banner fills as he does damage and gives all nearby allies guaranteed mini-crits (+ 35% damage); the Battalion's Backup allows him to protect nearby allies from critical hits and severe injuries (-35% to damage taken) -- but is charged by ''taking'' damage, rather than giving it;. the Concheror fills rage both ways. * LimitBreak: After filling his Ubercharge [=ÜberCharge=] meter, the Medic can unleash a devastating attack where he and one teammate are invincible (or, with the Kritzkrieg, have unlimited {{Critical Hit}}s) for ten seconds. Upon activation, it negates crits like the Battalion's Backup and everyone affected by it receives 20% of the damage they deal as healing.
** ShootingSuperman: Even when Ubercharge the Medic's [=ÜberCharge=] is activated, many people keep firing out of desperation. It makes more sense with rockets and grenades, though -- Ubercharge [=ÜberCharge=] does not protect from being thrown around. (In fact, a properly aimed explosive or a Pyro airblast can essentially ruin an Ubercharge [=ÜberCharge=] rush; even if the two aren't separated, they won't get their momentum back before the charge ends.)

The ExcusePlot, in its entirety, is "The other side is the enemy. Shoot their asses off." It really doesn't get any more complicated than that, and while there's absolutely no doubt that each character class has a distinct personality and can be easily recognized just by their silhouette, thanks to the "Meet The Class" movies there's also no doubt that they're all completely insane.

* BreakingTheFourthWall: The Scout has a few lines that only make sense in the context of a computer game:
--> ''"Yeah, I dare ya. {{Ragequit}}! Come on, make us both happy."''

* CargoShip: InUniverse, according to the Director update comic, as it shows the Heavy as having ''bought a bed'' for his mini-gun, and he sleeps next to it. In game, a dominating enemy Scout will taunt the Heavy about taking Sasha out for a nice steak dinner.
* CarnivalOfKillers
* CastOfSnowflakes: It's uncommon to see a FirstPersonShooter with ''five'' classes distinguished by anything more than different weapon loadout, let alone ''nine, viable, completely distinct classes''. The amount of work this took to balance could (''literally'') be summed up as "1 year for each class." According to the game's commentary, the characters were deliberately designed so that they could distinguished from one another simply by their silhouettes.

* ConvenientColorChange: This is part of the Spy's infiltration.

* CrazyPrepared: Those panels in the beginning of the Meet the Spy trailer? They all say random things. Some even say things like 'Has evil twin' and 'Found Dracula'. You can see them all [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyjCMZ6CyHc&feature=related here]].

* EvolvingWeapon: The Engineer's Sentry Gun (and since December 2008, the Dispenser and Teleporter as well).
** What makes the weapon evolution unique is that it's facilitated by [[ExpospeakGag force-fully delivering arm and wrench together in a repetitive swinging motion.]] [[http://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/7/7b/Sentry_Gun_Manual.jpg The in-game manual for sentry operation]] is full of imaginative ways to describe "Whack it with your wrench".
* ExplosiveInstrumentation: The Engineer's Buildings. Since the Engineer is equipped with a detonator remote, it's safe to assume the buildings are quite literally fitted with C4 (or some equivalent thereof).

* FacePalm: The Spy on any given losing team is seen doing this (unless he's in disguise) during Humiliation.

* FrenchJerk: The Spy is a very good example of this trope.

* GoombaStomp: The Mantreads allow the Soldier to inflict triple the damage he takes from fall damage on whatever poor sap he lands on.
* GrandTheftMe: While not literal, Your Eternal Reward specifically takes away a Spy's normal disguise kit, but whenever he backstabs an enemy, he immediately takes on that enemy's class and name as a disguise. As the enemy is silently killed and the body disappears almost immediately, unobservant foes won't notice that their friend is now playing for the other team. That said, you can still use voice-chat to announce that a spy had stolen your identity to your team and hope that they can hear you.

* MercyKill: What one of the Scout's domination lines for the Sniper claims, the reasoning being that he lives in a camper van...
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: As the Soldier says, "Pain is weakness leaving the body!" Also applies to his Equalizer, which makes him go faster and hit harder the more hurt he is.

* PsychoForHire: The team of mercenaries is apparently this. The Soldier and Pyro appear to be truly insane, the Demoman is very fond of explosions, the Heavy [[ICallItVera talks to his guns and Sanviches]] [[CompanionCube like they're real people]], and the Medic's bio states he has no qualifications for his job and considers healing to be an unintended side-effect of what he does.
** As of the Replay update, it's confirmed that Heavy has an unhealthy obsession with his minigun, going as far as buying a bed for it (and commenting how embarrassing it is, not the act, but that the bed is not ''big enough'') and the Soldier is completely insane, with a collection of heads that he keeps apparently being a hobby of his. In the same update it inverts it with the Sniper: While The Director continually tries to paint him as insane, even going as far as calling him a deranged psychopath. However the Sniper is later shown with a fairly average family, with his dad's disapproval apparently being because he refused to help out on the farm.
** According to "Meet The Medic", the Medic did indeed graduate from medical school. Unsurprisingly, his license was revoked.
