* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/PhilLordAndChrisMiller were asked to direct, but declined.
** Creator/EmmaStone was approached for an unspecified role in the film, but turned it down due to her reluctance to commit to another franchise after ''Film/TheAmazingSpiderManSeries''.
** Creator/AnneHathaway, Creator/JenniferLawrence, Creator/ElizaDushku, Creator/AlyssaMilano, Creator/AnnaFaris, and Creator/RebelWilson were also considered for undisclosed parts in the movie. Hathaway's character was supposedly going to be a doctor named "Anna".
** Feig originally envisioned an opening involving "an old guy getting electrocuted" but says they "mercifully" threw it out in favor of Katie Dippold's suggestion for a more iconic, old-NY feel.
** Creator/RickMoranis declined to make a cameo, stating that he didn't want to "spend one day of shooting making a cameo for something I did thirty years ago".
** Originally, the film was going to have practical effects in addition to the final CGI work, much like the original film as [[http://character-shop.com/tcsgbslimers.html according to effects artist]] Rick Lazzarini (who was personally chosen by Fieg). While this didn't happen, Lazzarini would contribute, [[UncreditedRole uncredited]], two stand-in puppets for Slimer and his mate.

** More than 20 years of false starts, rejected pitches and casting announcements went nowhere after the release of the second film, with attempts by Columbia (and later, Sony Pictures) to push development forward stalling out due to Creator/BillMurray, Creator/DanAykroyd and Creator/HaroldRamis having long-standing veto contracts, which were put in place during the meeting with Ovitz in Los Angeles in 1989. As chronicled by [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPAklIlov-A Midnight's Edge]], Ramis' death caused the power balance between the original trio of himself, Reitman and Murray to shift completely, and as detailed in leaked emails from the Sony hack, the studio film chief Amy Pascal essentially pushed Reitman out of the production process by courting Paul Feig in secret. Feig gave Pascal a pitch focusing on an all-female Ghostbusters team in a new "founding the Ghostbusters" story, and Pascal agreed to start development.

Especially now after the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it's pretty clear that this is simply not in continuity with the other films. The "30 years ago" in the marketing was just being done from a nostalgia/franchise standpoint.

* FlipFlopOfGod: Is the movie a ContinuityReboot, or does it actually have some connection to the [[Film/{{Ghostbusters 1984}} prior]] [[Film/GhostbustersII two]] films? Paul Feig claims the former, but the trailers mention the events of the first movie 30 years prior, and other promotional materials have (possibly unintentionally) connected the two universes in some way.

Rather tellingly, ''Film/GhostbustersAfterlife'' ignores this film in favor of being an {{Unreboot}}, being a DistantSequel to ''Film/GhostbustersII'' instead.
