** In ''A Realm Reborn'', Alphinaud was widely hated by fans. He doesn't do anything but talk your ears off, and always in a condescending manner. He bosses everyone around without doing anything remotely productive. His "quests" generally involve going back and forth between locations watching him do things, with your presence there largely unnecessary. Alphinaud is even condescending to his sister Alisaie, talking about how her plans to uncover the truth of the past are silly, when what Alisaie's doing is clearly more important than Alphinaud's space-wasting. Subsequent expansions [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap redeemed Alphinaud heavily for the majority of players]], though he still has some detractors who want to see him turn evil just so they can kill him.

Even so, Alphinaud still has some detractors who want to see him turn evil just so they can kill him.

** Asahi Brutus from ''Stormblood'' appears at first to be the kind-hearted, affable ReasonableAuthorityFigure [[TheEmpire Garlean]] diplomat to the occupied nation of Doma that the Warrior of Light is trying to free. He even helps protect a Doman village from an attack, seeming to reinforce it. However, he quickly reveals himself as a BitchInSheepsClothing par excellence, as he ''utterly despises'' Doma and especially the Warrior of Light due to a bizarre, creepy, thoroughly one-sided LoveTriangle with BigBad Zenos. He goes on to undermine the player's actions repeatedly, culminating in hijacking Yotsuyu's (who, it should be mentioned, turned out to be his adopted sister) redemption arc and forcing a HeelFaceDoorSlam - one that, thankfully, results in his death. His actions, Gonk appearance and uncomfortable obsession with Zenos make him this mark widely despied by much of the fandom.

*** In fact, Asahi's Scrappydom was so notable that [[spoiler: major antagonist of Endwalker, the Ascian Fandaniel, takes his body as his host for the expansion's course, specifically to make the WoL and Scions (and by extension the player) hate him even more.) And as if to rub it in one last time, at the end of the Aitiascope dungeon, in the midst of Fandaniel's HeelRealization, Asahi's spirit shows up one last time to perform ''yet another'' HeelFaceDoorSlam, before thankfully dissapearing for good. In Alphinaud's own words, 'I pray we do not meet again.']]

** Minfilia has a pleasant demeanor, but she never shuts up and doesn't do anything to save Eorzea from threats besides telling [[PlayerCharacter the Warrior of Light]] to solve the problem for her. The item text on her "minion" item reads "unlike her 'real' counterpart, this doll actually accompanies you on your adventures." Minfilia's "Pray return to the Waking Sands" became a meme among players due to how much she says it and how you always have to make a long trek to said Waking Sands whenever she wants to talk to you. English players developed a particular dislike for Minfilia due to a spotty English dub performance -- her VA attempted [[WhatTheHellIsThatAccent an untraceable accent]] and had [[DullSurprise the emotional range of a dead fish]], meaning that a resident MsExposition became painful to listen to. The developers took notice by naming one of the [=FATEs=] in ''Shadowbringers'' "Pray Destroy the Waking Sands", and later had Minfilia leaving the story for good in ''Heavensward''. Ironically, that quest-chain had a much better vocal performance due to a new voice actress from the mass cast change for the ''Heavensward'' expansion. This made anglophone fans even more angry, as there was a rallying cry of "why couldn't we have gotten that actress in the first place?" towards Square Enix.

** Vaan. [[SupportingProtagonist He has little involvement in the story]]; outside of his moments of being a MoralityPet for Ashe, Vaan is a TagalongKig. Even GuestStarPartyMember characters like Reddas and Larsa contribute more to the plot than Vaan does. Also, Vaan falls right into the cliche of "pretty-boy RPG hero", which had already started getting old at the time of the game's release and has become even more derided with time. Vaan's only redeeming factor is becoming [[MasterOfAll the fastest and hardest hitter from your party]] once he gets to Level 100. ** In ''A Realm Reborn'', Alphinaud wasn't very popular at all, and was widely hated and criticized by fans. He doesn't do anything but talk, and talk, and goddamn talk, always in a smug and condescending manner. He bosses everyone around, never actually ''does'' anything remotely productive, and is generally a completely useless, insufferable git that ''everyone'' wants to see turn evil just so they can kill the little shit. His "quests" generally involve going back and forth repeatedly between locations watching him do things, with your presence there stupendously unnecessary. Making matters worse is that he first appears condescending to his much more likeable sister about how her plans to uncover the truth of the past are unproductive and stupid. It turns out that what she's doing is clearly more important than Alphinaud's space wasting. Subsequent expansions [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap redeemed him heavily for the majority of players]], though he still has some detractors.

** Vaan. While he is the main character of the game, he has little involvement in the story, and becomes nothing more than a TagalongKid shortly into the game, outside of his moments of being a MoralityPet for Ashe as the game goes on. His very existence means that the more popular Ashe/Basch/Balthier cannot be the main character (especially irritating when one learns that Basch WAS originally intended to be the main character before the team decided [[PanderingToTheBase that young kids would appeal more to the game's teenage demographic]]). Imagine having your favorite character thrown out of the spotlight by somebody completely pointless? Also if you're tired of the usual pretty-boy RPG hero, Vaan falls right into that cliche ''hard''. Or even worse, realizing that not only are the previously mentioned important players tossed aside, but there are GuestStarPartyMember characters like Reddas and Larsa who contribute more to the plot than Vaan. His only redeeming factor is, simply, his stats. Once he hits level 100, he becomes, bar none, the fastest and hardest hitter from your party. Spinoffs managed to redeem him a bit for fans, but within his home game, Vaan is immensely unpopular.
** Similarly, Penelo. Like Vaan, she has almost zero stake or contribution in the plot, outside of some moments of ShipTease with Vaan and Larsa, serves as a DamselInDistress for much of the early parts of the game, and never really does anything of significance once rescued. Furthermore, while Vaan was somewhat rescued from this in spinoff titles, Penelo remains disliked because she barely does anything noteworthy in them, or hardly appears at all.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII'' has Jihl Nabaat. She's a cold-hearted {{Jerkass}} that repeatedly stops to be petty to Sazh by torturing him about his son. She seems to be set up as a HateSink, but the game is perhaps a bit ''too'' successful on that score; she seems mostly kept around just to randomly KickTheDog when other villains are still trying to be secretive. And perhaps worst of all, [[TheUnfought another villain kills her before you've had a chance to fight her]], meaning the player never gets a cathartic beatdown on her. All that buildup of hatred, and the player is never given proper outlet for it (well, until [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII2 the sequel]], but only as DownloadableContent).

** Slightly less aggravating but still widely hated is Minfilia, leader of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, an organization dedicated to saving Eorzea from threat ranging from foreign invasion to angry gods given form. While she has a much more pleasant demeanor than the smug Alphinaud, she ''never'' shuts up, shoehorns "must needs" into every sentence, and generally doesn't do anything to actively save Eorzea from any threat besides telling the player to go solve the problem. So much so that the item text on her "minion" item reads "unlike her 'real' counterpart, this doll actually accompanies you on your adventures. Minfilia's "Pray return to the Waking Sands" became a meme among the fans due to how much she says it and how you always had to make a long trek to said Waking Sands whenever she wanted to talk to you. The developers took notice by naming one of the [=FATEs=] in ''Shadowbringers'' "Pray Destroy the Waking Sands", and later had a resolution with her character that involved her ultimately leaving the story for good.

*** Was RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap in ''VideoGame/Dissidia012FinalFantasy'', where his character model was a lot less grating (compared to the [=PS2=] version, at least), his character was a lot more likable, his voice actor showed marked improvement, and he had a kit of techniques that many players enjoyed. Not to mention, his story arc featured [[EnsembleDarkHorse Kefka]] as its ArcVillain, which gave way to Creator/DaveWittenberg's glorious goofy [[LargeHam ham]] as everyone's favorite monster clown.
** Similarly, Penelo. Like Vaan, she has almost zero stake or contribution in the plot, outside of some moments of ShipTease with Vaan and Larsa, serves as a DamselInDistress for much of the early parts of the game, and never really does anything of significance once rescued.

** Alphinaud doesn't do anything but talk, and talk, and goddamn talk, always in a smug and condescending manner. However, this is (somewhat) fixed in the ''Heavensward'' expansion, which has Alphinaud take a more active role in the story - including fighting alongside you.
*** By later expansions, the hatred has died down entirely and currently he is in fact is one of the [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap more well received characters]]. That said, many people will always bring up the topic of how much he has come and developed since the days of his first appearance whenever they talk about him, as if highlighting how far he has come since his first appearance.

*** One of the major problems players have with Alphinaud and Minfilia stems from the fact that they're diplomats in a combat-centered MMORPG. Since what they do doesn't have any effect other than giving exposition to the player or pointing them in the right direction, it's easy to tag them as "useless." However, this is really more an excuse for Minfilia, who is explicitly stated to be more akin to a politician or diplomat than an adventurer or scholar like the other Scions. She even holds the distinction of being the only Scion not carrying a weapon.

Misuse. A scrappy has to be hated for narrative reasons. Umaro is only hated for being bad in combat, so he is a Tier Induced Scrappy (Low Tier).

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI'':
** Umaro the Yeti is widely hated for being a Berserker, a job class from the series where the character has no control over and does nothing but attack. Also supported by the fact that Umaro speaks [[TheUnintelligible complete gibberish]].
** '''EVERYBODY''' hates the [[BrattyHalfPint spoiled rich kid]] at the Jidoor auction house for making you waste time with him making his father buy him useless items like a scale model ship or a robot imp. Sometimes ''up to ten times in a row''. Especially aggravating if you're playing the [[UpdatedRerelease Advance version]] and just want to get the goddamn Excalipoor.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV'':
** Edward/Gilbert, a bard (the [[TropeNamer original]] SpoonyBard) has a major HeroicBSOD after his fiancee and parents are killed and not reacting in a way fans approved (apparently it's ridiculous to be shattered after the sudden death of your loved ones). He does happen to be very useful at one point [[spoiler:playing the Twin Harp to enable you to use metal weapons against the Dark Elf]], but that's not enough for the fanbase. The DS re-release did tweak his abilities, making him much more useful.
** [[GlassCannon Tellah]] also has quite a hatedom for having an extremely low mana pool [[spoiler:which prevents him from casting Meteo before the plot-appropriate moment]] and stats that at worst, could go all the way down to zero.
** [[TheChick Rosa]] has [[NeverLiveItDown never lived down]] her two moments of being a DamselInDistress, and they have painted her in that mold despite her being freed about a third of the way into the game. She also suffers backlash from [[HoYay Kain/Cecil shippers]], and being OvershadowedByAwesome with Rydia, who is seen as a far more interesting character with a deeper backstory and more impressive abilities (namely SummonMagic). At best among most fans, Rosa isn't hated, she's simply seen as a bland and boring character compared to the rest of the cast.

** There's also [[CrutchCharacter Cyan]], a {{Samurai}} spends most of the game moping (though it's justified; his ENTIRE NATION and his FAMILY was killed early on), speaks in YeOldeButcheredeEnglishe (that other characters openly mock), has rather low magic stats in battle, and his special ability, [=SwdTech=]/Bushido, takes forever to charge up. This was sort of fixed in the IOS version, where you can select your [=SwdTech=] before you charge it.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' and the ''Compilation'':
** Cait Sith is a very silly [[TeamPet puppet]] that forces his way into the party, his attacks are somewhat luck-based. His betrayal is shockingly EasilyForgiven. His "HeroicSacrifice" seems cool at first, but a few seconds later is proven rather... overdramatic in execution. Possibly RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap by virtue of [[spoiler: actually being Reeve]] and helping lighten up the dreary ''VideoGame/DirgeOfCerberus''.
** Genesis. As if [[AuthorAppeal being Tetsuya Nomura's gushy love letter to]] Creator/{{Gackt}} wasn't enough, in every game he's shoehorned into, he comes across as a bad poetry-spouting, obsessive-compulsive VillainSue who can't take a hint every time someone beats him senseless. He literally drops into ''the'' iconic scene of the infamous "Nibelheim flashback" from ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' just to crap it up with more horrible meaningless poetry and douchiness. The scene is saved by dint of Sephiroth practically telling him to screw off.
** Angeal, who's from the same game as Genesis. He ''constantly'' talks about honor, dreams, heroism, etc. He uses the word "honor" is almost every other line of dialogue, even if it doesn't make sense in the context he uses it, to the point you wonder if he knows the meaning of the word. Even ''Sephiroth'' mocks him for it. Toss in also his perceived {{Wangst}} over his condition that leads to a HeelFaceRevolvingDoor, and you wonder why so much of SOLDIER idolizes him.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX'':
** Two characters are regularly dismissed as Scrappies: Quina, who was supposed to be the comic relief but came off as useless because s/he was essentially a [[PowerCopying Blue Mage]] with a gimmicky way of learning spells and a borderline useless [[LimitBreak Trance]] that only contributed toward it instead of making him/her more useful in combat and being repulsive due to looking like a clown with a gigantic tongue and acting like Jar Jar, and Eiko, who was much more useful but even more annoying due to her clingy personality as well as being a BrattyHalfPint. Quina is an interesting case, in that s/he could learn [[MagikarpPower some of the best offensive and defensive abilities]] in the game ([[GuideDangIt provided you know where to look]]), to the point many vets consider him/her the best character in the game. Thus, you have a lot of players who love the hellraiser who can double the party's defenses, heal like a White Mage, and dish out 9999 damage for a measly 8 MP. - but hate the ugly fat thing that contributes nothing to the plot and won't shut up about eating things.
** On the villains' side, Zorn and Thorn, Queen Brahne's MonsterClown CreepyTwins henchmen, also annoy a lot of players for their bizarre mannerisms and their tendency to repeat each other constantly. On the plus side, they end up {{Not So Harmless Villain}}s and provide a good boss battle. On the other hand, they keep giving a status effect that won't let you gain AP from them, which is vital for permanently learning skills.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'': Seymour also tends to be one of the least favorite villains among fans. Largely because [[RecurringBoss no matter how many times you hand him his ass, he JUST WON'T DIE.]]
** Tidus likely echoes the feelings of many players after beating Seymour yet again:

Noel for getting bucketloads of screentime in the trailers, and Serah for referring to Snow (her ''fiance'') as a "friend" in the trailer, and because fans see her as a replacement of the main protagonist, Lightning (the fact that Serah is, in fact, Lightning's sister; the fact that she seems to have the exact same paradigm roles (Commando, Ravager, and Medic); The fact that her mission is described as being exactly the same as Lightning's ("Save her sister"...though really, what could Serah do to help a supposed Warrior Goddess?); the fact that she seems to have a suspiciously similar weapon to Lightning (instead of a gunblade, it's a swordbow); etc...probably doesn't help very much. It also probably didn't help that they described Lightning as the main protagonist for the first six months and then suddenly show Serah for 98% of the trailers and announced that Lightning would only make brief playable appearances). Noel...well...he just has the misfortune of being described as the replacement for the original main cast.

* ''Videogame/FinalFantasyXV'': Many of the game's examples below are scrappies due to [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter spending less time in the limelight than they should have.]]
** Lunafreya Nox Fluret; before the game was released, she was hated for [[ReplacementScrappy being the rewritten version of Stella Nox Fleuret]], a supposed AntiVillain with powers similar to Noctis back when the game was still ''Versus XIII''. After the game is released, she then became mainly hated for only having [[AdvertisedExtra a few important scenes of screen time despite advertisements pointing out that she is a main character.]] Her [[StrangledByTheRedString romance with Noctis is considered to be very underdeveloped due to not spending much time together on screen]] and her death at the hands of Ardyn has failed to make fans sympathize with her and made her look like a cheap expy of Aerith.
** Iedolus Adelcarpt is also another scrappy as he as also failed to live up to his character role through lack of screen time. He is supposed to be a major antagonist and the chancellor of Niflheim yet he only get a couple of important scenes that only last a few minutes. In addition, the player doesn't even get to fight him while he is human but instead fights him in chapter 13, which is seen as the game's worst level while he has been transformed into a demonic monster called Foras.
** Versitael Besithia was also supposed to be an antagonist in the game yet his time on screen was extremely minimal and he came across as a very bland character as he was only present in one very brief scene in the game. Many fans who played the game have even forgotten that he existed in the game by the time they got to the last chapter. The fact that he was [[spoiler:Prompto's father]] was not even revealed on screen and had to be revealed via WordOfGod as this revelation would have fleshed out Versitael a bit more. The episode Prompto DLC has him RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap though by not only giving him more screen time and making him the main antagonist of the DLC but also acknowledging [[spoiler:his fatherly relationship with Prompto]] and making that an important plot point in the episode.
** The game's version of Bahamut. First off, he is king of the Astrals but he basically causes the events of the game to happen by having Ardyn become a messiah like figure against Ifrit and the Starscourge and then repays him by having him demonized simply because Ardyn absorbed the evils in the world. Then Bahamut came up with a massive plan to end the starscourge when he should have had the power to eradicate it himself. That plan involves having Noctis absorbed into the crystal and stay there for 10 years, then releasing him back out and having him sacrifice himself not taking into consideration all of the horrible things Noctis went through such as losing his father and Lunafreya. Bahamut is also a summonable character but players disliked the fact that they could only summon Bahamut in only one point of the game, with it being the boss fight against Ifrit and that summon does not defeat Ifrit but rather moves the whole boss fight into the second phase, leaving Shiva and Noctis to clean up the whole mess.

Barret a scrappy? What? He's a beloved character.

** Barret, whose profanity and tough guy slang caused many to label him a [[EthnicScrappy racist stereotype]] and an example of the tendency of Japanese games to apply such dialogue to characters based on skin color.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII'': Vaan. While he is the main character of the game, he has little involvement in the story, and becomes nothing more than a TagalongKid shortly into the game.

*** Was RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap in ''VideoGame/Dissidia012FinalFantasy'', where his character model was a lot less grating (compared to the PS2 version, at least), his character was a lot more likable, his voice actor showed marked improvement, and he had a kit of techniques that many players enjoyed.

** Genesis. As if [[AuthorAppeal being Tetsuya Nomura's gushy love letter to]] {{Gackt}} wasn't enough, in every game he's shoehorned into, he comes across as a bad poetry-spouting, obsessive-compulsive VillainSue who can't take a hint every time someone beats him senseless.

The Final Fantasy X WMMV page lists Tidus as a Base Breaking Character and this entry claims that the Japanese players like him, meaning that the Americans Hate Tingle trope suits him best. Rapha and Marack are only hated for being bad in combat, meaning that they are Tier Induced Scrappy (Low Tiers).

** Although he was well-received at the time of the game's release, many who look back on the series consider Tidus one of the more annoying of the Final Fantasy protagonists due to his whiny voice and childish personality, both in English and in Japanese. He's intended to be a more lighthearted, happier protagonist compared with the moodier characters in 7 and 8, but fans who tend to think this way usually say Zidane from 9 did it first and did it better. Due to ValuesDissonance regarding the stricter social pressure in upholding your family, however, Japanese players seem to look on him more kindly.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyTactics'':
** The [[MagikarpPower Rapha]] / [[SpoonyBard Marack]] sibling duo is so absolutely ''useless'' in battle, they've earned nothing but scorn from game players. This is exacerbated by the presence of [[GameBreaker game-breaking]] characters like T.G. Cid, Agrias, and Meliadoul, as well as Rapha's [[LeeroyJenkins suicidal rush towards Assassin-type foes]] in the missions where the player is supposed to [[EscortMission protect her from getting killed]].
