Noel for getting bucketloads of screentime in the trailers, and Serah for referring to Snow (her ''fiance'') as a "friend" in the trailer, and because fans see her as a replacement of the main protagonist, Lightning (the fact that Serah is, in fact, Lightning's sister; the fact that she seems to have the exact same paradigm roles (Commando, Ravager, and Medic); The fact that her mission is described as being exactly the same as Lightning's ("Save her sister"...though really, what could Serah do to help a supposed Warrior Goddess?); the fact that she seems to have a suspiciously similar weapon to Lightning (instead of a gunblade, it's a swordbow); etc...probably doesn't help very much. It also probably didn't help that they described Lightning as the main protagonist for the first six months and then suddenly show Serah for 98% of the trailers and announced that Lightning would only make brief playable appearances). Noel...well...he just has the misfortune of being described as the replacement for the original main cast.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyV'' has an odd example: in the [[FanTranslation RPGe]] and GBA translations, Faris is considered to be a fun, entertaining character. In the [=PS1=] port, they gave her a [[TalkLikeAPirate pirate accent]] that was completely awful and overdone in every scene, making her ''incredibly'' obnoxious. ** Ardyn Izunia, despite being the main antagonist and was supposed to be hated for murdering Lunafreya, is hated for entirely different reasons. First off, [[SpotlightStealingSquad he hogged up a lot of the game's screen time at the expense of the other antagonists such as Iedolus and Versitael]] and he also came across as very annoying and irritating. The final boss against him left fans to feel less cathartic about beating him due to how the battle was laid out and ended with a quick time event.

Mind you, the BB was actually ''stronger'' than the Fighter ([[Webcomic/EightBitTheater who likes swords]]), but its defenses were negligible, as equipping armor reduced its attack power. After becoming Master, while the class becomes even ''more'' powerful, it lacks the ability to use magic when both rival classes, Knight and Ninja, can.

** Lunafreya Nox Fluret; before the game was released, she was hated for [[ReplacementScrappy being the rewritten version of Stella Nox Fleuret]], a supposed AntiVillain with powers similar to Noctis back when the game was still ''Versus XIII''. After the game is released, she then became mainly hated for only having [[AdvertisedExtra a few important scenes of screen time despite advertisements pointing out that she is a main character.]] Her [[StrangledByTheRedString romance with Noctis is considered to be very underdeveloped due to not spending much time together on screen]] and her death at the hands of Ardyn has failed to make fans sympathize with her and made her look like a cheap Aerith expy through this.
** Iedolus Adelcarpt is also another scrappy as he as also failed to live up to his character role through lack of screen time. He is supposed to be a major antagonist and the chancellor of Niflheim yet he only get a couple of important scenes that only last a few minutes.
** Versitael Besithia was also supposed to be an antagonist in the game yet his time on screen was extremely minimal and he came across as a very bland character as he was only present in one very brief scene in the game. Many fans who played the game have even forgotten that he existed in the game by the time they got to the last chapter. The fact that he was [[spoiler:Prompto's father]] was not even revealed on screen and had to be revealed via WordOfGod as this revelation would have fleshed out Versitael a bit more.

** The game's version of Bahamut. First off, he is king of the Astral but he basically causes the events of the game to happen by having Ardyn be a messiah like figure against Ifrit and the Starscourge and then repays him by having him demonized simply because Ardyn absorbed the evils in the world. Then Bahamut came up with a massive plan to end the starscourge when he should have has the power to eradicate it himself. That plan involves having Noctis absorbed into the crystal and stay there for 10 years, then releasing him back out and having him sacrifice himself not taking into consideration all of the things Noctis went through. Bahamut is also a summonable character but players disliked the fact that they could only summon Bahamut in only one point of the game, with it being the boss fight against Ifrit and that summon does not defeat Ifrit but rather moves the whole boss fight into the second phase, leaving Shiva and Noctis to clean up the whole mess

** Versitael Besithia was also supposed to be an antagonist in the game yet his time on screen was extremely minimal and he came across as a very bland character. He also failed to protect King Regis from death in the Insomnia invasion.

He is hated so much that he is almost guaranteed to appear in any "Most hated video game characters" poll, especially since he is from a ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' title. The PSP version of the game includes an extra stage in which Argath comes BackFromTheDead just so the player can have the pleasure of killing him a second time.

** Barret, whose profanity and tough guy slang caused many to label him as a [[EthnicScrappy racist stereotype]] and an example of the tendency of Japanese translators to apply such dialogue to characters based on skin color.

* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'' has so many characters on the player's side that are almost universally hated, one wonders if it was intentional. Chief among them is Alphinaud, who doesn't do anything but talk, and talk, and goddamn talk, always in a smug and condescending manner. He bosses everyone around, never actually ''does'' anything remotely productive, and is generally a completely useless, insufferable git that ''everyone'' wants to see turn evil just so they can kill the little shit. Making matters worse is that he first appears condescending to his much more likeable sister about how her plans to uncover the truth of the past are unproductive and stupid. It turns out that what she's doing is clearly more important than Alphinaud's space wasting. However, this is (somewhat) fixed in the ''Heavensward'' expansion, which has Alphinaud take a more active role in the story - including fighting alongside you.

** Although he was well-received at the time of the game's release, many who look back on the series consider Tidus one of the more annoying of the Final Fantasy protagonists due to his whiny voice and childish personality, both in English and in Japanese. Also if you're tired of the usual pretty-boy RPG hero, Vaan falls right into that cliche ''hard''. Or even worse, realizing that not only are the previously mentioned important players tossed aside, but there are GuestStarPartyMember characters like Reddas and Larsa who contribute more to the plot than Vaan.

** Cait Sith is a very silly [[TeamPet puppet]] that forces his way into the party, his attacks are somewhat luck-based. His betrayal is shockingly EasilyForgiven. His "HeroicSacrifice" seems cool at first, but a few seconds later is proven rather... overdramatic in execution. Possibly RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap by virtue of [[spoiler: actually being Reeve]] and helping lighten up the dreary ''DirgeOfCerberus''.
