It\'s not whitewahsing, it\'s the trope, nothing to do with the actual character but with his final scenes. Nuance. You may dislike the character, but you can\'t really deny Johnny Sack is given an empathic death scene with lot of build-up played for empathy, even in-universe he\'s mourned. It\'s not your hated asshole mobster dying, but a human being right there, a husband and a father. The human angle is explictly evoked, they make him interact with another cancer patients and all. A Death In The Limelight not even subtle or ambiguous by the show standards. Not even Death Of The Author is in play because it\'s intentional, I could quote DVD commentaries from many writers, not only David Chase, if needed. This was slighty touched discussion, no problem with the actual conversation but you should not Edit war.

** As discussed above, this show opened the door for a lot of shows that tried to show "gritty" depictions of crime families. Most of those shows only copied the shocking violence, and not the great dialogue, wicked sense of humor, complex themes and excellent acting that made this show a success, which is why they're all gone. The show itself isn't subtle in its attempts to pick up where ''{{Goodfellas}}'' left off in its demythologising of the Mafia. A truly impressive amount of the cast of this show had parts of varying significance in that film. In case it wasn't obvious enough, their first choice to play Tony Soprano was Ray Liotta.

** Nancy Marchand (Livia Soprano) died between seasons. The writers gave her a final scene with Tony, cut from her previous work with him. It was terrible. Is there an issue? Send a MessageReason:
They do not, Butt Monkey is a very specific trope about things always going south for a character \"it must be a regular occurrence.\", and here most of the characters are bullies or/and rich and successful, with up and downs or sudden (as in not sustained) downfalls. As an aside tip If i may, broad generalizations make for bad examples, like in Zero Context Example regardless of the wording.

** Most of the cast themselves counts too, due to the fact that they bought their miseries upon themselves. Whoever's acting as the most assholish character one scene after another is likely to be the episode's key AssholeVictim.

Added DiffLines:

* SliceOfLife: The show is a character study rather than a thesis-oriented work.
